    A writ has been issued on behalf of Elizabeth Jessie Kittle, of Shepparton, claiming £500 as damages for alleged breach of promise of marriage from Thomas Deeley, police-constable, of Beaufort.8
  • 16 Feb 1944: Two Homes Destroyed At Upper Beaconsfield
    AT about 4 p.m. on Monday two houses in the Dewhurst-Upper Beaconsfield area were destroyed by fire. They were owned by Mr. Deeley a former superintendent of the CIB., and Mr. T. Turner, but neither owner was in residence at the time. Chief damage was caused in scrub country, and the Emerald and Upper Beaconsfield fire brigades had the fire under control at 7.30 p.m.9

  • 29 Oct 1903: DIVORCE. A pending divorce suit by Mabel Beatrice Maud Rickerby against Arthur Burns Rickerby formed the subject of proceedings, before Mr. Justice Hood, to-day. The respondent, who is now described as a collector, was at the date of the marriage, 17th June, 1897, a probationer and lay reader at the Primitive Methodist Church, North Melbourne. The application to-day was for the pay ment of £20 to cover the wife's costs, and also of a weekly sum for alimony. The petitioner made an affidavit, in which she stated that she was at present residing at Ballarat, and had no means of support. To the best of her belief her husband is in receipt of £3/5/- per week, besides commission. The husband made an affidavit to the effect that he only received £3 per week, out of which, after paying for board and lodging, he had only 15/- a week for himself. Mrs. Rickerby stated in another affidavit that her husband, in a letter to her, boasted of having made £14/10/- in one week, and of having £40 in the Savings Bank. In another letter he threatened, if an order were obtained against him, to go to gaol rather than pay it. The respondent was called, and said that, in 1901 his solo income was £2/15/- per week, whilst in 1902 it was £3, and he also made £6 in commission. He denied that he made £14/10/ in one week by betting, or any thing at all, and excused himself for telling fancy tales in his letters by saying that it was a husband's privilege to write anything he chose to his wife. Counsel inquired, "Is it a husband's privilege to tell lies to his wife?" and the witness replied with another query, "Never mind. Do you always tell the truth to your wife?" Respondent, in reply, said he only spent 10/- a week in expenses, which went in repairs for his bicycle, pocket money and drinks. His Honor ordered the respondent to pay £20 for his wife's costs, and alimony at the rate of 15/- per week, with £3/3/- costs. Robert Arthur Burns Rickerby7
  • 5 Nov 1903: In the second case, Mabel Rickerby, of Ballarat East, asked that her marriage with Robert A. Rickerby might be annulled. The parties were married on 17th June, 1897, according to the rites of the Church of Christ, respondent then residing at West Melbourne. Petitioner complained of infidelity and cruelty on the part of respondent in January, 1901. Owing to the nature of the evidence, his Honor ordered that it should not be reported at length. Respondent denied the charges brought against him. His Honor granted a decree nisi for dissolution of the marriage, and ordered that petitioner should have the custody of a child of the marriage, respondent to be allowed to see it once a month. Davidson performed the ceremony. The bride is the only child of Mr and Mrs T. W. C. Deeley, of Manchester Street, Hawthorn, and the bridegroom is the elder son of Mr and Mrs J. H. K. Greening, of Eddington. A clinging gown of supple ivory satin was worn by the graceful bride, who was given away by her father. Long, tight-fitting sleeves formed points over the hands, and the skirt extended at the back to form a train. From a diadem of real orange blossom fell a billowy veil of tulle, and lilies, white sweet peas and azaleas mingled in the sheaf bouquet. A retinue of three bridesmaids, Miss P. Kellaway, Miss M. Greening (sister of bridegroom), and Miss V Kennon, and a matron of honor, Mrs F. G. Smith, attended the bride. They were dressed alike in pretty hydrangea blue georgette frocks, which had decollete bodices, and two small frills on the long skirts, defining the hip line. Their attractively-swathed head bands of bois-de-rose French tulle were wreathed with tiny pink and blue rosebuds, and their shower bouquets were also in pink and blue tonings.   • 11 Jul 1924: An old and respected resident of the district, Mr William McLean, passed away at his residence, "Ardgour", Upper Beaconsfield, on Saturday, 5th inst. Before retiring to this district some years ago, Mr McLean was for some years an accountant of the Education Department, and was later appointed Government Statist, and retired from that position in 1905. Since then he has lived a retired life at his country home. He leaves a son and two daughters. His son, Dr J. B. McLean, is general Superintendent of Hospitals, Brisbane. The funeral took place on Monday at the Berwick Cemetery. Rev. James Wilson conducted the burial service.25

McLean, general medical superintendent, had left for Melbourne owing to the illness of his father, and that word since had been received by the board that Dr. McLean's father had died.
    A motion of condolence was carried, members of the board standing; and the secretary was instructed to convey to Dr. McLean the sincere sympathy of all members in his loss.9
  • 22 Feb 1931: WHAT PROMPTED BRISBANE HOSPITAL , SUPERINTENDENT'S RESIGNATION? Dr. J. B. McLean Leaves Highly Paid Post
    A sensation was caused in the City on Thursday when, it was announced that Dr. J. B. McLean, General Medical Superintendent of the Brisbane and South Coast Hospitals Board, had resigned his elevated post. No reasons were given for the sudden step. Why the resignation? RECENT disclosures of happenings within the Brisbane General Hospital have caused unrest and a considerable feeling of uncertainty, and though Dr. McLean has not been personally impugned, his administration has certainly been the subject of criticism. It has been shown that on more than one occasion untoward happenings have either been not reported to the Hospitals Board or only meagre details furnished. If, as has been suggested, Medical Super intendent McLean has endeavored to assist his professional brethren by a strict observance of the ethics of the profession it may have led to a clash of opinions, and Dr. McLean has taken this step as a protest against interference. Recently, it is staled, certain comment was made respecting his administration by mem bers of the Medical Advisory Board. It has been only too evident ; that certain of the honorary staff at the General Hospital have been dissatisfied with the control exer cised. The Hospitals Board, though it has not asked for on ex planation from the Superintendent has had reason to find fault with methods in vogue, particularly those relating to the reportings of deaths under unusual circum stances. "Truth" has on more than one occa sion criticised the methods of Medical Superintendent Mc Lean, and drawn at tention to the neces sity of the placing of the public interest before medical ethics, In a recent issue, in which there was made a disclosure of two deaths in the hospital following injections of vaccine, "Truth stated:— "A medical superintendent who takes up the attitude that he need report to the board only such happenings as he he chooses, who declines to make any statements to the press—which represents the people— and who chooses to clothe in secrecy vital information which the public is en-titled to know about its own hospital is not serving the community as he should . . . ."
    No Explanation Offered To The Public
    Whatever view of his duty Dr. McLean took, and whatever may have been the reasons upon which he felt impelled to so act, this newspaper is unable to divine, but he has now seen fit to tender his resignation For what reason? The safety of the position per annum is in the four figures class, it is an honored and coveted office, it carries with it a large measure of authority, and the Board has shown an inclination to further increase the responsibilities — and the salary. It is not so long since the annual re muneration was lifted to £2000 p.a. Some technicality compelled a reduction to the amount formerly paid. Why has the Superintendent vacated such a position? Is it because he found growing discon tent with his administration not only among his fellow members of the profession but among a section of the public, and the press and possibly within the rooms of the Hospitals Board or for en tirely personal reasons? The Board desired that its General Medical Superintendent should be the supreme medical authority in the hospitals and would — if it could, under its by-laws — have invested him with the highest possible power. A RoyaI Commission recommended greater power for the General Superintendent, it proposed his being relieved of all respon sibilities other than administrative ... and now on the eve of attainment to a pinnacle the Superintendent resigns. Why? The Chairmen of the Board (Mr. G. Rees) doesn't know. He told "Truth" so on Thursday, and, so far as can be gathered, no one knows. There still remains the fact that there have been only footling and futile inquiries into the deaths of a man on an operating table in which a wrongly adjusted ether machine tube figured, the deaths of two men due to vaccine injection, and other happenings for which Dr. J. B. McLean, as General Medical Superintendent of the Brisbane and South Coast Hospitals Board, though not personally involved, is certainly the person looked to for fuller explanations. The Government has failed in its duty to the public in these matters, and inasmuch as it has not issued any statement or taken any action; but that is no reason why Dr. Mc Lean should not have pursued them and ascertained if any of his staff were guilty of negligence, and taken appropriate action. The community engaged the Superin tendent to the community he has now tendered his resignation.
    RESIGNED— Dr. J. B. McLEAN, Superintendent of the Brisbane General Hospital, whose resignation, submitted on Thursday has caused a sensation.10
  • 9 Sep 1943: DR. J. B. McLEAN DEAD
    Dr. Jonn Barr McLean, who for many years was superintendent of Brisbane General Hospital, died yesterday.
    A graduate of Melbourne University, he came to Brisbane in 1900, and became a resident at the General Hospital. He was in private practice for a short period in 1904, later taking up the position of superintendent at the hospital, where he remained until his retirement about 10 years ago. Dr. McLean served as a surgeon in the last war with the First Australian General Hospital. He has left a widow.11

  • 5 Jul 1923: Dance at Upper Beaconsfield.
    At the invitation of Lt.-Col. and Mrs. G. H. Knox, a number of their friends from Upper Beaconsfield and the surrounding districts, and also Melbourne were present at the delightful dance held in the Assembly Hall, Upper Beaconsfield, on Friday evening, June 22. The guest of the evening was Miss K. Bird, cousin of the hostess, who is on a visit from England, and the dance was given in honor of her twenty-first birthday. The supper room of the hall was converted into a cosy lounge, with easy chairs, carpets, and a glowing fire. Bridge tables were provided for non-dancers. On a large table in the supper-room was arranged a buffet supper.
    The hall was gaily decked with cerise and violet streamers festooned from a centrepiece arranged with hoops of paper flowers of the same color and greenery. Tall oriental lamps and festoons of greenery, with cerise flowers, made a very effective screen round the dias, on which the musicians were seated. Mr. K. R. Pinkerton (of Berwick) was responsible for the artistic decorations of the hall. At 10 p.m. the guests retired to Salisbury House, opposite the hall, to partake of a sit-down supper.
    After midnight a large birthday cake, with twenty-one candles burning brightly on it, was carried into the hall, and cut by Miss Bird. The hostess (Mrs. G. H. Knox) wore a gracefully draped frock of apricot changeable taffeta, caught at the side with monkey fur: she carried an Early Victorian posy of autumn tints. Miss K. Bird was dressed in dainty mauve taffeta, with panels of Valenciennes lace, and a deep collar of georgette edged with similar lace.
    Among the guests present were.—Messrs. R. Knox (Melbourne), Dare (Melbourne), Lester, Beauchamp, Capt. Tate, Messrs. J. F. Sturken, Bunt, Day, K. R. Pinkerton, J. Swords, R.   • 21 Jan 1932: One of the worst bush fires in the memory of the oldest residents occurred here on Friday and Saturday, when a devastating fire swept over the district. On Friday, a fire, which had been burning in the scrub, fanned by a strong north wind, menaced the residence of Mr. McMillan, and in response to a call for help, about 50 men were soon engaged in a fierce fight to save the house and outbuildings. This they managed to do, and the fire then jumped the main road and threatened the residence of the Misses McLean; a break was burned, and the house was safe. On Saturday morning another fire commenced near Miss McLean’s boundary fence, and soon the residences of Messrs. Blair, Boker and Gilpin, and a number of others were in danger. A large band of willing workers managed to save the houses, but unfortunately they could not save the fine lemon orchard of Mr. McMillan, which was destroyed, also a week-end residence of Mr. Harkins. The heat was so great when the place got alight that it was im possible to get near it. In the after noon a sudden change of wind to the south caused the township to be menaced, and a desperate call for help was sent out, and in reply volunteers from Berwick, Narre Warren and Dandenong came to augment the local Bush Fire Brigade, until there were over 200 men, under the direction of Constable Barrett, and other leaders, engaged in the desperate effort to save the homes of Madame Montigue, Messrs. McBride, McDonald, Harvey-Smith, Rev. T. Greenwood, Robinson, J. Campbell, Major Campbell, Miss Elliott, J. Deville, C. Ellis, Claydon, Wright, Binding and Brown. The worst fight was at “Kyogle,” Mr. McDonald’s house; at one time it was felt that this fine residence would go, but the determined fight put up by the willing workers saved it. Here it was that anxiety was felt for one band who had become surrounded by flames, but they managed to get clear, although some of them succumbed to heat and smoke after getting out. The fine garden and plantation of Major Campbell was swept by the fire, despite the efforts of the workers, and hundreds of pounds worth of valuable plants and trees were destroyed, and the fine house was only saved by the superhuman efforts of the fire fighters. Miss Elliott’s house got alight, and part of the roof had to be stripped off before the fire could be put out. Mr. Ellis had the fence and pavilion attached to his tennis court destroyed, and the fire swept through his orchard, only being stopped within a few feet of the house. The house of Mr. Wright was saved by burning a break, as was Mr. Brown’s house and lemon orchard.
    On Sunday afternoon a small fire developed in Salisbury Gully, but it was soon got under control; whilst this was being put out an urgent call for help came from “The Towers,” Mr. Berglund’s property. A large body of men were rushed out, and the fire was got under control before very much damage was done. On Sunday a fire, which had started on the Saturday in Cordner’s Gully, crossed the Officer rd., and threatened the orchard of Mr. F. Love, but it was kept out, and, with the exception of the loss of some fencing, not very much damage was done.   • 6 Jul 1916: UPPER BEACONSFIELD. The members of the Dramatic Club met together in a social capacity, in the hall on Saturday afternoon last. The object was that the voluntary services rendered by Miss McLean, of "Ardgour," in taking charge of the library of the club for past years should be recognised. The article presented by the Rev James Wilson, was a handsome suit case, and in doing so he referred to the good services she had rendered, and hoped, that when she travelled as they all desired, she would long be spared to do, she might find this little token of esteem very handy.27
  • 4 Mar 1922: Dr. William Beattie Smith, of Tasma, Gisborne-street, East Melbourne, who died on the 12th of December last, by a will dated the 15th of July, 1920, left personal estate valued at £19,718 to Misses Mabel and Agnes M'Lean, Ardgour, Upper Beaconsfield, and Dr. J. B. M'Lean, of the Brisbane General Hospital, the children of 'my oldest friend in Australia since 1882,' subject to the payment of a number of legacies to friends and bequests 'to public institutions. He left £1000 to the Melbourne University and directed that the annual interest on this sum be used "to establish a few annual lectures on the early treatment of insanity, as I consider the practitioner and the public are in need of much education in regard to that subject."   • 5 Jul 1923: Dance at Upper Beaconsfield.
    At the invitation of Lt.-Col. and Mrs. G. H. Knox, a number of their friends from Upper Beaconsfield and the surrounding districts, and also Melbourne were present at the delightful dance held in the Assembly Hall, Upper Beaconsfield, on Friday evening, June 22. The guest of the evening was Miss K. Bird, cousin of the hostess, who is on a visit from England, and the dance was given in honor of her twenty-first birthday. The supper room of the hall was converted into a cosy lounge, with easy chairs, carpets, and a glowing fire. Bridge tables were provided for non-dancers. On a large table in the supper-room was arranged a buffet supper.
    The hall was gaily decked with cerise and violet streamers festooned from a centrepiece arranged with hoops of paper flowers of the same color and greenery. Tall oriental lamps and festoons of greenery, with cerise flowers, made a very effective screen round the dias, on which the musicians were seated. Mr. K. R. Pinkerton (of Berwick) was responsible for the artistic decorations of the hall. At 10 p.m. the guests retired to Salisbury House, opposite the hall, to partake of a sit-down supper.
    After midnight a large birthday cake, with twenty-one candles burning brightly on it, was carried into the hall, and cut by Miss Bird. The hostess (Mrs. G. H. Knox) wore a gracefully draped frock of apricot changeable taffeta, caught at the side with monkey fur: she carried an Early Victorian posy of autumn tints. Miss K. Bird was dressed in dainty mauve taffeta, with panels of Valenciennes lace, and a deep collar of georgette edged with similar lace.
    Among the guests present were.—Messrs. R. Knox (Melbourne), Dare (Melbourne), Lester, Beauchamp, Capt. Tate, Messrs. J. F. Sturken, Bunt, Day, K. R. Pinkerton, J. Swords, R. Glover, Berglund, Carsewell, Lorimer, Brown, McBride, E. Blain, Seely, Harvey Smith, Cant, Reed, Lester, Miss Margaret Clarke (Melbourne), flame-colored crepe de chine, with tulle pointed overskirt. Mrs. E. W. Harris, blue marocain, with flowing ninon sleeves, blue wreath. Miss Margaret Crossley, mauve crepe de chine, satin waist-line caught with cabachon of violets. Mrs. Beecham (Scoresby), blue shot taffeta, draped skirt, caught at sicie with handsome cabachon of feathers. Mrs. Lister (Scoresby), black crepe de chine, with jet trimmings. Mrs. R. P.   • 21 Jan 1932: One of the worst bush fires in the memory of the oldest residents occurred here on Friday and Saturday, when a devastating fire swept over the district. On Friday, a fire, which had been burning in the scrub, fanned by a strong north wind, menaced the residence of Mr. McMillan, and in response to a call for help, about 50 men were soon engaged in a fierce fight to save the house and outbuildings. This they managed to do, and the fire then jumped the main road and threatened the residence of the Misses McLean; a break was burned, and the house was safe. On Saturday morning another fire commenced near Miss McLean’s boundary fence, and soon the residences of Messrs. Blair, Boker and Gilpin, and a number of others were in danger. A large band of willing workers managed to save the houses, but unfortunately they could not save the fine lemon orchard of Mr. McMillan, which was destroyed, also a week-end residence of Mr. Harkins. The heat was so great when the place got alight that it was im possible to get near it. In the after noon a sudden change of wind to the south caused the township to be menaced, and a desperate call for help was sent out, and in reply volunteers from Berwick, Narre Warren and Dandenong came to augment the local Bush Fire Brigade, until there were over 200 men, under the direction of Constable Barrett, and other leaders, engaged in the desperate effort to save the homes of Madame Montigue, Messrs. McBride, McDonald, Harvey-Smith, Rev. T. Greenwood, Robinson, J. Campbell, Major Campbell, Miss Elliott, J. Deville, C. Ellis, Claydon, Wright, Binding and Brown. The worst fight was at “Kyogle,” Mr. McDonald’s house; at one time it was felt that this fine residence would go, but the determined fight put up by the willing workers saved it. Here it was that anxiety was felt for one band who had become surrounded by flames, but they managed to get clear, although some of them succumbed to heat and smoke after getting out. The fine garden and plantation of Major Campbell was swept by the fire, despite the efforts of the workers, and hundreds of pounds worth of valuable plants and trees were destroyed, and the fine house was only saved by the superhuman efforts of the fire fighters. Miss Elliott’s house got alight, and part of the roof had to be stripped off before the fire could be put out. Mr. Ellis had the fence and pavilion attached to his tennis court destroyed, and the fire swept through his orchard, only being stopped within a few feet of the house. The house of Mr. Wright was saved by burning a break, as was Mr. Brown’s house and lemon orchard.
    On Sunday afternoon a small fire developed in Salisbury Gully, but it was soon got under control; whilst this was being put out an urgent call for help came from “The Towers,” Mr. Berglund’s property. A large body of men were rushed out, and the fire was got under control before very much damage was done. On Sunday a fire, which had started on the Saturday in Cordner’s Gully, crossed the Officer rd., and threatened the orchard of Mr. F. Love, but it was kept out, and, with the exception of the loss of some fencing, not very much damage was done.     Miss McLean, of Beaconsfield Upper, gave a most instructive and enjoyable demonstration of floral work, and spoke on pioneer women and their gardens at Cardinia.     BEACONSFIELD UPPER. Saturday.— On Friday night a cottage, owned by Mrs Larkin, and built on the Quamby settlement at Beaconsfield Upper, was destroyed by fire. Mr Barnett, a son-in-law, and two youths were staying at the cottage, and retired to bed early. On 23 Apr 1912, when he was 17 years old and working as a carpenter, William John Larkin enlisted with the Navy for a period of 7 years. In 1914 took part in the landing for the capture and occupation of German New Guinea. He was awarded Chevrons.
His family were long time residents of Upper Beaconsfield and Willie's name is listed on the Honour Board at the Upper Beaconsfield RSL.1

He had the misfortune to be laid aside with appendicitis when at Aden. On arrival at Melbourne he was sent to Mont Park Rest Home and there remained for eight weeks. He is now spending ten weeks furlough at the Grampians. On his return he will receive his discharge and once more take his place as a worthy citizen of this district.5

  • 5 May 1927: WALKING AND TALKING DOLL - Gift to Baby Princess.
    A beautiful doll was given by Mr. and Mrs. Nathan for the fete which was held at Upper Beaconsfield at Easter. With such skill and ingenuity was this doll made that it could both walk and talk. It was thought by the members of the fete committee that the children of the Upper Beaconsfield district might like to buy the doll and have it sent to Her Royal Highness the Duchess of York as a birthday present from them to the baby Princess. Mrs Harvey Smith offered to dress the doll, and this was done with most artistic taste. The doll was sent to Government House with a letter asking Her Royal Highness if she would graciously accept the gift from the children of Upper Beaconsfield as a token of their loyalty and affection. A reply has been received that Her Royal Highness gratefully thanked the children of Upper Beaconsfield for the gift.   • 4 Oct 1928: MASONIC. At the Soldiers’ Memorial Hall, Berwick, on Wednesday, September 26, Wor. Bro. John Nathan was installed as W.M. of the Berwick Lodge, in the presence of a large attendance of visiting brethren and lodge members. The ceremony was performed by Grand Lodge officers, and the annual banquet followed, both of which passed off successfully and proved enjoyable.39

  • 5 Jan 1933: Master Dug Nathan, eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. J. Nathan. He was, on Christmas Eve, conducting some chemical experiments, when one of the test tubes burst and cut his face rather badly. Unfortunately some of the flying glass entered his eye. He was hurried away to the doctor, who ordered his removal to the Eye and Ear Hospital, where an examination revealed that the sight of the right eye had been destroyed.   • 20 Apr 1933: BEACONSFIELD UPPER. Before his departure from the district, the members of the cricket club tendered a farewell social to Mr. M. J. Burnett, their vice-president. There was a good attendance and a most enjoyable evening was spent. During an interval the president of the club (Mr. J. Nathan) presented the guest of the evening with an enlarged photo of the members of the team, and in doing so referred to the good work that their guest had done in helping to build up the club, and he was certain that Mr. Burnett’s departure would leave a nitche that would be hard to fill; he, on behalf of the club, wished him health, happiness and prosperity in his new sphere of labor. The remarks were endorsed by Col. Campbell and others, who all stressed the fact that their guest had always proved himself to be a good sport and one who was always ready to give of his best in the interests of the club.   • 24 Jul 1933: BEACONSFIELD UPPER.—Mr. J. Nathan is making good progress after the operation which he underwent at the beginning of last week.46
  • 19 Oct 1933: BEACONSFIELD UPPER. On Wednesday evening a concert in aid of the local cricket club, was held in the hall, and was an unqualified success. The programme, was supplied by the Emerald Dramatic Club, who gave that amusing three act comedy, “Charley’s Aunt.” The performers, who were all well trained and thoroughly understood their parts made the most of the many amusing sketches of this entertaining comedy, and earned the hearty plaudits of the audience. At the conclusion, the president of the cricket club (Mr. J. Nathan), in a happy little speech, on behalf of the cricket club thanked the performers for the splendid entertainment they had given; this was seconded by Mr. Marsh, and carried with acclamation.47
  • 27 Mar 1935: STATIONS MAY BE CLOSED. RAILWAYS AND MOTORS GIPPSLAND LICENCES DEFEREED
    Transport Board's Inquiries
    Appearing for the Railways Department to oppose applications for licences for motor goods vehicles operating from Beaconsfield Upper, Bunyip, and Cora Lynn, in Gippsland, Mr. Burt Kelly intimated to the Transport Regulation Board yesterday that in view of competition by motor transport the department might be forced to close many stations. The chairman of the board (Mr. P. D. Phillips), who, with Mr. W. H. Kendall and Mr. J. Jeffrey, heard the cases, said that before giving its decisions the board might visit the districts in question.
    Mr. Hector Pringle, of Beaconsfield Upper, applied for a licence for one vehicle for the carriage of orchard materials and other goods from Beaconsfield Upper to Melbourne and from Melbourne to Beaconsfield Upper and district. He said that he carried to Melbourne once a week. His rate was £1 a ton. Last year he carried 15,000 cases of fruit to cool stores and to the railhead.
    To Mr. Kelly.-The primary producer wants us to run to Melbourne.
    Mr. Kelly.-You carry more fruit to the station than to Melbourne?
    Witness.-Yes.

    Talk of Pilfering
    Mr. John Nathan, storekeeper, of Beaconsfield Upper, supporting Mr. Pringle's application, said that by motor transport the goods could be brought in one handling from warehouse to store. Railway transport involved four handlings.

    To Mr. Kelly.-We got our groceries in cardboard containers.
    The Chairman.-Why could they not come in cardboard containers by the railway?
    Mr. Nathan.-I could not say without hurting Mr. Kelly's feelings; but they might be pilfered.
    When they came by rail was there any pilfering?-Very little; they were cased up.
    Mr. Kelly quoted figures to show that the railway rates were substantially lower than those of the road operator. He suggested that the district could be served by the railways in conjunction with local carriers.

    Economics of Short Hauls
    The Chairman.-With regard to these close-in goods hauls, there might be something said for leaving them for a while and accumulating more evidence. It is a question whether the radius fixed by the Legislature (25 miles) should be an unvarying one, or might be extended to 35 miles. There might be something said for leaving these temporary licences for a time until we know more about the economics of short hauls.
    Mr. Claude Alfred Harris, of Upper Beaconsfield, applied for a licence to operate from Beaconsfield Upper to the city and return, He said that he operated four days a week, and sometimes five, from Upper Beaconsfield, and sometimes he served Berwick en route. He took primary produce to Melbourne, and he carried back "every conceivable thing that was made." He carried liquor to three hotels.

  • 16 Aug 1935: Upper Beaconsfield. The annual meeting of the Upper Beaconsfield C.C. was held at the Assembly Hall recently. The balance-sheet showed a credit of £6 6/7 and was a tribute to the work of the retiring office-bearers. Officers elected for the coming season were:—President, Mr. J. Nathan; vice-presidents, Messrs. G. Marsh and J. Glismann secretary, Mr. G. N. Holmes; treasurer, Mr. G. M. Renfree.49

  • 5 May 1927: WALKING AND TALKING DOLL - Gift to Baby Princess.
    A beautiful doll was given by Mr. and Mrs. Nathan for the fete which was held at Upper Beaconsfield at Easter. With such skill and ingenuity was this doll made that it could both walk and talk. It was thought by the members of the fete committee that the children of the Upper Beaconsfield district might like to buy the doll and have it sent to Her Royal Highness the Duchess of York as a birthday present from them to the baby Princess. Mrs Harvey Smith offered to dress the doll, and this was done with most artistic taste. The doll was sent to Government House with a letter asking Her Royal Highness if she would graciously accept the gift from the children of Upper Beaconsfield as a token of their loyalty and affection. A reply has been received that Her Royal Highness gratefully thanked the children of Upper Beaconsfield for the gift.   • 28 Dec 1932: EXPLOSION IN EXPERIMENT. Glass Enters Man's Eye.
    BEACONSFIELD UPPER. Tuesday.— While he was carrying out an experiment with chemicals, Mr Douglas Nathan, the elder son of Mr. and Mrs J. Nathan was seriously injured. Observing that the chemicals with which he was working were about to explode, he reached for his face mask, but he was too late, and he received the full force of the explosion in his face. Several pieces of glass entered the right eye, and he was hurried to the Eye and Ear Hospital, where an operation was performed. It is believed that the prompt attention he received will prevent his losing the sight of the eye.7
  • 5 Jan 1933: Master Dug Nathan, eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. J. Nathan. He was, on Christmas Eve, conducting some chemical experiments, when one of the test tubes burst and cut his face rather badly. Unfortunately some of the flying glass entered his eye. He was hurried away to the doctor, who ordered his removal to the Eye and Ear Hospital, where an examination revealed that the sight of the right eye had been destroyed. Very much sympathy is felt for Mr. and Mrs. Nathan, who have been residents of the district for a number of years. John Nathan8

Nathan, who met with a severe accident on Christmas eve, through the bursting of a test tube, is home again, after having, spent five weeks in the Eye and Ear Hospital, but it will be some time yet before the doctors will be able to tell whether his sight will be affected or not.9

  • 9 Jun 1933: Beaconsfield Upper. On Saturday evening last a new scheme of electric light for the Assembly Hall was opened. An entertainment was given to mark the occasion, and flag bridge and ping-pong tournaments were played. After honoring the toast of the King, Mr. Harvey-Smith, chairman of the trustees of the hall, briefly explained the attitude with regard to the lighting, and, after the old lights had been turned off, Mrs. Harvey-Smith switched on the current. The new lighting is excellent, and all present expressed great satisfaction with what had been done. The new lighting scheme is due to the enterprise of Mr. Douglas Nathan, who has installed a generating plant in the old store next to the hall. This marks another stage in the improvement of the hall
    property, and should be an incentive to the public, whose property it is, to do just a little more to support it.11

(Witness) Notea 4 Mar 1920 Thomas Peter Krüss. It appears that after his store burnt down T P Krüss built his new store on land belonging to Mrs Lucie Dupont on Salisbury Road. Perhaps he intended to buy it, though the title was never transferred into his name. In August 1920 the storekeeping business and the land were for sale and bought by Frances Pringle, whose son-in-law, John Nathan, continued the storekeeping business.
