  • 20 Oct 1910: Damaging Roads. DANDENONG, THURSDAY, OCTOBER 20.
About a month ago the Berwick Shire Council appointed a special officer to keep a lookout for persons who caused damages to the shire roads, and that the appointment was justified was proved by the fact that at the Pakenham Police Court on Saturday, before Mr. Harris, P.M., the Council proceeded against Alfred Simmons and his son Leslie for having dragged a log, fastened to the axle of a dray, along the road at West Gembrook, and thereby damaging the road to a considerable extent: Simmons was fined £1 and 2/6 costs, and the son, who, way, working for his father, was fined 2/6 and 2/6 costs. • 17 May 1923: TOO WEAK TO WORK. Horse Driver Fined £5
For having treated a horse in circumstances involving cruelty, Alfred J. Simmons, 191 Ferrars street, South Melbourne, was fined £5, with £2/2/ costs at the South Melbourne Court today.
Evidence was given that on April 19 Simmonds was driving the horse when it had a large exposed sore under its collar. The horse was too old and weak for use.
Simmonds's defence was that he in tended to purchase a motor car, and was going to do away with the horse.
He admitted the horse was weak, but he had taken it to many veterinary doctors, who had pronounced the horse as incurable.9
  • 18 May 1923: PATCHING UP THE OLD MARE. "DOSED HER WITH MEDICINE FOR YEARS."
Alfred James Simmons was charged at South Melbourne yesterday, with having driven a mare in circumstances involving cruelty.
Evidence was given that on 10th April Mr. Latham, secretary ot the Society for the Protection of Animals, stopped Simmons and examined the mare. He found a painful sore 1½ inch in diameter under her collar. When Mr. Latham remonstrated with defendant for working the mare, he produced a bottle of medicine, from which he said he gave her doses at intervals. Simmons was a man in good circumstances.
Defendant said he had decided to give up working the old mare. Having dosed her witn medicine for several years to no purpose, he was convinced that she was incurably ill.
Mr. Smith, P.M., indignantly observed that Simmons had no feeling for suffering dumb animals. He would be fined £5, with 42/ costs.10
