    Still more did my indignation rise at the trivial punishment awarded to this man by the authorities who investigated the case.
    Surely, sir, this case will be further investigated.16
  • 23 Oct 1915: CHILDREN AND PICTURE THEATRES. TO THE EDITOR OF THE ARGUS.
    Sir,—I was glad to observe by this morning's paper that the question of demoralising picture shows is receiving attention at last. I am not the least bit inclined to prudery—I believe that children should not be kept altogether in glass cases, but I am shocked beyond expression at the pictures which are now shown with quite disturbing regularity at pretty well every picture theatre in Melbourne. Some time ago in a certain suburb, which I should like to name, but had better not, a picture theatre was opened. This particular theatre made a point of providing matinees every Saturday afternoon for children. I, in common with many of my friends, were only too glad to send our children there during the winter, when outdoor sports were impossible. At first everything was perfectly correct. But gradually a change crept in. The pictures were just a trifle venturesome occasionally. This has increased steadily, till now all self-respecting mothers keep their daughters away. At first interesting films representing foreign countries were shown, the humour was humorous, and it was quite clean. The cowboy films, though blood thirsty, were quite wholesome, the topical subjects entirely interesting. But now there is very little foreign country shown, the humour is the lowest comedy, the cowboy has given place to the rascal who loves everyone else's wife but his own, and the pictures of the women, who deserve to be whipped for misbehaviour, instead of being pitied by young, impressionable schoolgirls, are enough to make the healthiest person sick. This is having a disastrous effect on our young people. It is encouraging feelings that should not be experienced till quite mature years. It is forcing knowledge on young minds that should be protected scrupulously from such nastiness.—Yours, &c.,

Occupation*1889 His luck turned, however: in 1889 he was appointed Secretary to the Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital. He was to remain there until his retirement in 1913. In early 1891 he appointed a young Irishwoman called Ethel Stevenson as Matron to the VEEH; later in the year he married her, and they had a daughter, Gertrude, in 1892. Unusually for the time, in spite of being a mother, Ethel continued to work at the VEEH until 1908.

  • 25 Mar 1886: THE DOURO CASE. PROSECUTION OF CAPTAIN SORENSEN.
    (By TELEGRAPH FROM OUR CORRESPONDENT.) BRISBANE, WEDNESDAY.
    At the police court to-day, Captain Sorensen, of the Douro, was charged on remand with violently assaulting Charles Leslie on the high seas. Among the witnesses called was Thos Godfrey Leslie, who deposed that Sorensen was in his employ as master of the Douro , that he (witness) was a British subject, and the sole owner of the Douro. Counsel for the prisoner objected that the ship's papers before the Court showed that she was Portuguese, and that the ownership of a British vessel must be proved by the production of a certificate of registry. The witness further gave evidence concerning the registry of the Douro under the Portuguese flag, and the manner in which this was done. At the conclusion of Leslie's evidence a further charge against Sorensen of feloniously assaulting and robbing certain natives of Carpenter Island was proceeded with. The question of jurisdiction, which depends on whether the vessel is British or foreign, was again raised by the prisoner's counsel. Evidence in support of the charge was taken at considerable length, the principal witness being Charles Leslie, the cook of the Douro. Eventually the prisoner was remanded on both charges until to-morrow.11
  • 31 Oct 1906: Beaconsfield Upper. Quite a gloom was cast over the district on Wednesday morning when, it became known that the dead body of one of the old identities of the district, Mr J Wade was found on the Gembrook road, about half a mile from the post office. For many years he had worked fossicking in the various gullies, but old age had compelled him to give it up, and for some time back he had acted as caretaker for Mr Leslie. (See Thomas Godfrey Leslie) He had gone for a walk on Tuesday afternoon with a friend, and after parting, was returning when death over took him. A magisterial enquiry was held at the Pine Grove Hotel on Friday morning before Mr. Wilson, J.P., when Drs Muir and Bennie, who had held a post mortum examination on the previous day, certified what the cause of death was Brights disease of the kidneys and heart failure.   • 7 Apr 1909: Berwick Shire Council. Cr. Martin moved that tenders be called for fencing in side cuttings from Leslie's gate to the far corner of McLean's orchard, Upper Beaconsfield. Recently two accidents had occurred through horses becoming frightened at motor cars coming silently around curves, and it was to prevent this that he moved in the matter. Agreed to.     Many Geelong people will be interested to learn of the wedding of John Bernard, only son of Mr and Mrs B. L. Hickie, Belmont, Clarendon Street, East Melbourne, and until recently, of Geelong, and Eileen, second daughter of Mr S. H. Worrall, Koonangurt, Lismore. The ceremony was quietly performed at All Saints, St. Kilda, on December 19th, by the Rev. J. Jones. The bride was given away by her father, and wore a frock of palest pink georgette, having a draped skirt, with long side panels. Soft tulle of the same shade, arranged cap fashion, formed the veil and train. She carried a beautiful bouquet of pink roses. A dinner was held afterwards at the George Hotel, St. Kilda, and Mrs Worall received the guests in a frock of black crepe de chene embroidered in gold, and hat to match. Her flowers were pink carnations. Mrs Hickie wore a frock of black ninon and black hat, and carried some deep pink waterilies. The bridegroom's grandmother, Mrs A. J.     Many Geelong people will be interested to learn of the wedding of John Bernard, only son of Mr and Mrs B. L. Hickie, Belmont, Clarendon Street, East Melbourne, and until recently, of Geelong, and Eileen, second daughter of Mr S. H. Worrall, Koonangurt, Lismore. The ceremony was quietly performed at All Saints, St. Kilda, on December 19th, by the Rev. J. Jones. The bride was given away by her father, and wore a frock of palest pink georgette, having a draped skirt, with long side panels. Soft tulle of the same shade, arranged cap fashion, formed the veil and train. She carried a beautiful bouquet of pink roses. A dinner was held afterwards at the George Hotel, St. Kilda, and Mrs Worall received the guests in a frock of black crepe de chene embroidered in gold, and hat to match. Her flowers were pink carnations. Mrs Hickie wore a frock of black ninon and black hat, and carried some deep pink waterilies. The bridegroom's grandmother, Mrs A. J. Cripps, was present in a frock of black mariette and lace with a flat velvet bow on her white hair. She held a posy of cerise sweet peas. Bernard Louis Hickie, John Bernard Hickie11
