Anecdote*James HOPKINS was a mean man, tight with money, and the family never went anywhere. They had no car. He was very religious, so much so that cooking was not allowed on a Sunday, and the Sunday meal had to be prepared on the Saturday.1

(Mentioned) News-Council23 Aug 1917 23 Aug 1917: Berwick Shire Elections. On Thursday night last Mr C. P. R. Hurditch, who is standing for the seat vacated by Mr Martin, addressed the ratepayers in the hall, Upper Beaconsfield. Mr James Anderson occupied the chair. Mr W. J. Harvey Smith, J.P., and Mr James Hopkins, postmaster, Upper Beaconsfield, spoke highly of the candidate, and his fitness for the seat at the council, which they trusted would be effected on the polling day. Mr Hurditch, who referred to the need of a councillor, being resident in the district, which he sought to represent, gave as his experience, that on his tour in this election cam paign, he found that one thing might be said in proof of local residence, viz., "that you were always sure to have a good road leading at least to the home of the councillor. Confidence was seemingly held by those assembled, that Mr Hurditch, would head the poll, although it might not be "just a walk over." Mr G. W. Martin, the retiring councillor, addressed; the ratepayers in the Upper Beaconsfield Hall on Monday evening. Mr Percy Anderson presided and in asking Mr Martin to give some account of his stewardship during his past term of office, he thought the ratepayers would continue to support him in the coming contest on Thursday, and he trusted that Mr Martin would again be returned. Mr Martin in the course of his remarks, referred to great improvements that had been made on the roads within the last few years and but for the great war crisis further work would have been done. Those assembled seemed to be pleased with Mr Martin's work in the past and they trusted that the result of the ballot on Thursday, would reinstal him as the district's representative.   • 21 Jan 1915: Berwick Shire Council. Correspondence. From C. Hopkins, Upper Beaconsfield, offering to provide a lamp outside the post office, and asking that the council would allow him for attending to same—Left in the hands of clerk of works.26
  • 24 Mar 1915: At this morning's police court, before Mr W. Harris, P.M., and Messrs W. J. Harvey Smith, G. L. Wilson, W. G. a'Beckett and T. McLennan, Js.P., a man named Smith was charged with stealing potatoes valued at 20s, the property of Mrs Goff, of Beaconsfield Upper. Senior constable Hehir prosecuted and stated the facts of the case. He said Mrs Goff had been missing potates from her plot and she obtained the services of the trackers to try and detect the offender. Defendant admitted taking the potatoes. Mr Jones, who is employed by Mrs Goff, said he valued the potatoes at 20s. Mr James Hopkins said he had known the defendant for 3 years. He had employed him on several occasions and found him honest and a good worker. Senior-constable Hehir said he had also known him for some time, and knew nothing against him. Defendant was fined 5s and ordered to pay 20s, the value of the potatoes. The fine was paid. Helen Rosa Goff27
  • 24 Mar 1915: Some time ago Mr. Hopkins offered to provide an acetylene lamp outside the post office at Upper Beaconsfield providing a satifactory arrangement could be made with the council. This has been completed and the lamp erected. It is much appreciated by local residents.27
  • 26 May 1915: From James Hopkins, Upper Beaconsfield, drawing attention to the bad state of the road in front of the store, and asking that something be done to it. Mr Ramage said that the council some time ago decided to do the work referred to, but the rate payers favored the money being spent on the other side of the road and this was done. It was decided, on the motion of Cr Henty, to notify Mr Hopkins of this fact.28
  • 16 Nov 1916: BEACONSFIELD UPPER.— Dr. W. E. Drake and Mr. J. Hopkins have been appointed trustees of the local assembly hall. Dr William Elliot Drake29
  • 23 Nov 1916: BEACONSFIELD UPPER. A concert given free to the residents was held on the evening of Saturday, in the Assembly Hall, the occasion being the appointment of two trusteee to fill the vacancies on the board of management. The gentlemen appointed were Dr W. E. Drake and Mr James Hopkins.   • 21 Feb 1918: BEACONSFIELD UPPER. On Saturday evening a social meeting assembled in the hall, the object of which was to bid farewell to Mr James Hopkin and family, who have for the past few years conducted the post office here. Owing to family considerations Mr Hopkins is going back to town during this week. Miss Hopkins, who has been post-mistress during these years, has from her obliging disposition become a great favorite. The Rev. James Wilson presided, and after a few very pointed references to the lively interests Mr Hopkins has taken in all matters pertaining to the affairs of the district expressed the general regret of the residents. He then presented Miss Hopkins with an elegant gold wristlet watch as a token of esteem, expressing regret at her departure. Miss Hopkins, in a few very well appointed remarks, returned thanks. Mr Hopkins was then presented with a case of pipes and pouch. In returning thanks for such an unlooked for testimony of esteem, he through family reasons had decided on the change, but his mind would often revert to the pleasant associations of Upper Beaconsfield. Song, sentiment, and a social cup of tea brought the evening to a close. Mr Peterson, a former resident here but lately of Dandenong has bought Mr Hopkin's property, and Miss Peterson, a young lady of attractive bearing and manners, will act as post-mistress. World War I

Joseph Surrey Thomas Hopkins enlisted at Holdsworthy, NSW, on 5 Oct 1915. He was assigned to the 1st Divisional Signal Company, Section 2, and his unit embarked from Melbouorne on 5 Jan 1916 on board HMAT Afric. SERN 5209.
He served in France, and due to a bad foot was sick in hospital for nearly three months in early 1917. He had later admissions for sychosis (inflammation of hair follicles), cellulitis, furunculosis, debility, and also was ill with influenza.
He returned to Australia on 22 Dec 1918.
Before the war he was the storekeeper at Upper Beaconsfield, which his sister was the postmistress.1,2

  • 2 Nov 1911: Hill Cycling Mishap.—As Mr Surrey Hopkins, storekeeper, was riding down the steep hill leading to Stony Creek on Monday he found that a cyclist had met with an accident. The victim was a young woman, "Lieutenant" West, an officer of the Salvation Army. She was lying in the scrub, near the roadway. Her face was swollen and bleeding; she appeared to be dazed.
    Mr Hopkins sought assistance, and the Misses Day and Campbell did all they could to make the sufferer comfortable. Miss West was conveyed to the Pine Grove Hotel, and Dr Langmuir ascertained that she was suffering from shock and a broken collarbone. Evidently Miss West lost control of her machine and coming to a dangerous corner of the road went straight up the embankment and crashed into the scrub.12
  • 18 Mar 1919: A message received from Mungindi last week conveved the news that Surrey Hopkins, who prior to enlisting was on the staff of the Mungindi Post Office, was returning and had arrived in Victoria.13
  • 19 Jul 1924: HOPKINS.-July 2, at their residence, Kyoming, Armidale, to Mr. and Mrs. J. Surrey Hopkins-a son (Keith James).14

  • 6 Jan 1915: FIRST AID Some time ago a ladies' class was formed at Beaconsfield Upper for instruction in first aid, and the usual course of lectures was delivered by Dr Langmore. An examination has since been conducted by Dr Griffith with satisfactory results. Six candidates presented themselves for examination, and five passed.   • 18 Oct 1916: From G. M. Hopkins, postmistress, Beaconsfield Upper, asking the council to sanction the closing of the office on Wednesday afternoons. To meet public convenience the office, was being kept open till 8 o'clock every evening.—Cr Martin moved that the sanction of the council be given, as the postmistress was acting generously in keeping the office open till 8 every evening. Cr Henty seconded the motion, which was carried.11
  • 21 Feb 1918: BEACONSFIELD UPPER. On Saturday evening a social meeting assembled in the hall, the object of which was to bid farewell to Mr James Hopkin and family, who have for the past few years conducted the post office here. Owing to family considerations Mr Hopkins is going back to town during this week. Miss Hopkins, who has been post-mistress during these years, has from her obliging disposition become a great favorite. The Rev. James Wilson presided, and after a few very pointed references to the lively interests Mr Hopkins has taken in all matters pertaining to the affairs of the district expressed the general regret of the residents. He then presented Miss Hopkins with an elegant gold wristlet watch as a token of esteem, expressing regret at her departure. Miss Hopkins, in a few very well appointed remarks, returned thanks. Mr Hopkins was then presented with a case of pipes and pouch. In returning thanks for such an unlooked for testimony of esteem, he through family reasons had decided on the change, but his mind would often revert to the pleasant associations of Upper Beaconsfield. Song, sentiment, and a social cup of tea brought the evening to a close. Mr Peterson, a former resident here but lately of Dandenong has bought Mr Hopkin's property, and Miss Peterson, a young lady of attractive bearing and manners, will act as post-mistress.   • 20 Jan 1915: From the Chief Inspector of Factories re an application by Mr Lee, of Beaconsfield Upper, for an exemption from the Saturday half-holiday provisions of the Act, and asking for particulars as to the number of shop keepers that would be affected. Mr Lee asked that he be permitted to close his shop on Wednesday instead of Saturday.--Cr Close said he understood there was only one shop at Beaconsfield Upper, and as many weekenders visited this district it would be a convenience to the public to have the shop open on a Saturday afternoon. - The President said the public were inconvenienced by the closing of the shops on one day in the week and many of the post-offices on another. He considered there should be more uniformity in the matter. - The secretary said it would be more convenient to the public if all post offices were closed on the same days and hours. The present arrangements caused a good deal of inconvenience at times.-The President agreed with the secretary.-In regard to Mr Lee's application, it was decided to inform the department that the petition sent was signed by a majority of the shopkeepers affected.19

  • 22 Jul 1916: A NICE DAY Dorothy M. Wilson, who lives at Upper Beaconsfield writes: —Dear Aunt Connie,— This is the first time I have written to you. I would like to be numbered among your nieces. We have been living at Upper Beaconsfield since Christmas, and we like it very much.
    I saw in "The Weekly Times" a letter from one of my friends, and so I thought I would like to write, too. She and I go to the same school, which is about three-quarters of a mile away. I am in the seventh grade at school, and I am 12 years old. We have three horses. We have just had a new school and shelter-shed built here. We had a nice day last Empire Day. We had a half-holiday from school; and I enjoyed it very much. I wish the Young Folks' page every success. Please may I write again?

  • 29 Jul 1916: HE PARADISE OF CHILDREN. Dorothy Wilson, who lives at Upper Beaconsfield, writes:—Dear Aunt Connie,—Seeing that you were offering a prize for the best letter on any subject, I thought I would tell you a story called "The Paradise of Children." Long ago there lived a boy whose name was Epimetheus. He was an orphan. So that he would not be lonely, another child (an orphan), whose name was Pandora, was sent to be a playmate for him. When Pandora went into the house where Epimetheus lived, she saw a big box and she asked him what was in it. "My dear little, child," said he, "you must not ask me; because that is a secret, and, besides, I do not know myself." Pandora would keep on asking until Epimetheus was quite tired of her. At last he said, "A man with such an odd looking cap, which seemed to be partly of wings, brought it here. "Oh, I know him," cried Pandora. "It was Quicksilver." One day, as Pandora was looking at the box, a tiny voice cried out, "Let us out, dear Pandora, let us out." So she opened the box and just at that moment Epimetheus came into the room. "Oh, I am stung!" cried both children together. Both had been stung grievously. Pandora sobbed bitterly. Just then there was a gentle tap on the lid of the box. They opened the box and a tiny fairy stepped out. "My name is Hope," said she. "Will you stay with us for ever?" said they. "Yep," she said, and she did. Pandora and Epimetheus are dead now, but Hope and those naughty things that stung them are still alive.7
  • 12 Jun 1941: PERSONAL NEWS. The wedding is reported of Mr. J. Gildart and Miss Dorothy Wilson, both of whom were formerly attached to the staff of the local branch of the Western Stores & Edgleys Ltd. They were married at Port Moresby, where they will take up residence. They have the best wishes of a large circle of friends.8

In August 1920 the storekeeping business and the land were for sale and bought by Frances Pringle, whose son-in-law, John Nathan, continued the storekeeping business.

  • 4 Mar 1920: Bush Fires
    During Thursday, of last week, the township of Beaconsfield was surrounded by bush fires, but, through the energy displayed by local residents, in beating out the flames, none of the dwelling houses were destroyed by fire.
    However, on Friday morning the flames burst forth once more, and the store of Mr Krüss caught fire, and was totally destroyed, notwithstanding the efforts put forward by many willing helpers.
    Bush fires, which had been raging near Monbulk, Olinda, and between Ferntree Gully and Bayswater, for the past couple of week, were extinguished by th welcome rains which fell during Thursday and Friday. The fires, however, destroyed large tracts of timber, and a large quantity of fencing.14
