    The musical history of early Melbourne is recalled by the death on Friday evening at her residence in Deepdene road, Deepdene of Mrs R S Smythe, formerly Miss Amelia Bailey. Mrs Smythe would have reached the age of 90 on November 5 of this year. She was a native of London and arrived in Melbourne with her parents at a very early age. She was attending St James's Sunday school when her singing attracted the notice of Mr Allan, the founder of the music firm of Allan and Sons. He obtained her admittance to the Philharmonic Society at the age of 13 years and before she was 16 she had been appointed principal soprano. That was in 1858. She was the leading soprano of Victoria for a number of years until she lost her voice owing to a throat affection.
    One of her early performances was in "The Messiah" in Geelong. Mr H Byron Moore was conductor. He used to tell that if the ages of the five principals had been added the total would not have been 100 years. They included Miss Bailey, Mr Armes Beaumont the noted Melbourne tenor, and himself. Miss Bailey was married in 1863 to Mr R S Smythe, who conducted concert tours and presented celebrities for many years. Under his management, with the celebrated Miss Anabell Goddard, the English pianist, as "star" she toured the East and South Africa. Mr Smythe died in 1917. Mrs Smythe has three children, two of whom survive her. Mrs Edgar Bell and Miss Adelaide Smythe. Her son Mr Carlyle Smythe died while on a Continental tour with his wife six or seven years ago. He had earned a high reputation in Melbourne journalism, particularly in musical criticism and his early death was much regretted.10

  • 18 Dec 1925: MR. CARLYLE SMYTHE - Death in France.
    It will be learnt with regret that news was received yesterday by cable message of the death of Mr Carlyle Smythe at Nice, in the south of France. Mr Smythe had been an invalid for a considerable time, and he bore his suffering with remarkable fortitude. Some years ago he was the victim of a distressing accident, both his hands being so severely burned that he could use them only with extreme difficulty. He left Melbourne in April to seek advice in Europe. He spent some time in Germany, Switzerland, and France, but, unfortunately, the illness did not yield to treatment. Finally, he was advised to undergo an operation, which was performed in Nice, but he never rallied.
    Mr Carlyle Smythe was the son of the late Mr R. S. Smythe and Mrs Smythe, who lives at Highgate, Burke road, Camberwell. Mr Smythe sen, was, as is well remembered, an entrepreneur for eminent lecturers, and also for some years a concert manager. Mrs R. S. Smythe (who was Miss Amelia Bailey) was a soprano singer on one of the tours con ducted by Mr Smythe, and it was while they were on a tour in the East that Mr Carlyle Smythe was born at Umbana, at the foot of the Himalaya Mountains. His childhood and boyhood were spent in Melbourne, and he was educated at Hawthorn Grammar School, under Professor Irving. At this school he took the Shakespeare scholarship. He became a student of the University, where he gained the degree of bachelor of arts. While there Mr Carlyle Smythe was resident at Trinity College. He was chiefly distinguished for studies in literature and the classics, in which he reached a very high level of proficiency.
    After leaving the university Mr Carlyle Smythe assisted in managing some of the more notable tours which his father arranged. Subsequently, he spent some time in Europe, during which he engaged in journalism in Brussels, where he was for four years editor of the "Belgian Times," a journal published in English and French. He also published a history of Belgium.
    Upon his return to Australia he took up the interests that his father had made practically a family possession. In this connection Mr Carlyle Smythe almost rivalled his father as a traveller, and among the more interesting tours which he made were those with Mark Twain through South Africa and India, and with Max O'Rell. After his father had retired Mr Carlyle Smythe made engagements on his own account, and among other notable persons who came to Australia under his auspices were Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Mr Alexander Watson, Captain Amundsen and Annie Besant.
    The promise of Mr Carlyle Smythe's early life in literature and art was thoroughly fulfilled during his connection with journalism in the intervals between his other engagements which involved travel ling. He was for a considerable time a valued contributor to these columns, both as art and musical critic and as a writer on the broad questions of international policy, with which he had a remarkable familiarity. He was a man of varied tastes, and his ability in the several interests that he took up as a journalist was quite remarkable.
    Mr Smythe was married, and his wife was with him at the time of his death.3
  • 11 Jun 1940: MRS. CARLYLE SMYTHE
    Mrs Elsa Carlyle Smythe, widow of the late Carlyle Greenwood Smythe, died yesterday morning at her South Yarra home Aged 61, she was the elder daughter of Dr E F. Johansen, of Motueka (NZ), and sister of Mrs W Thomson. Corea, Dunkeld. She had many activities in Melbourne, being a member of the Red Cross central executive which she represented as unofficial delegate at the Japan, Geneva, and Copenhagen confer ences, patroness of the Kooroora Club and a member of the International Club.
    A fluent linguist, she made a special study of Japanese. B Matthews Pty Ltd. have charge of the funeral, which will take place to-day.4

Australian Dictionary of Biography

The son Carlyle Greenwood Smythe (1865-1925), journalist and manager, was born on 16 September 1865 at Ambala, India, while his parents were in the Punjab. He grew up in Melbourne where he was educated at Hawthorn Grammar School and Trinity College, University of Melbourne (B.A., 1888). During a brief journalistic career, he was for three years editor of the Belgian Times in Brussels and author of a history of Belgium. From the Twain tour of 1895 he became Robert's partner in lecture management. When his father retired, Carlyle conducted Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Mrs Besant, 'Max O'Rell' and Captain Amundsen, and wrote several magazine pieces about his experiences. On 11 November 1903 he married Elsa Dorette Bode at St Barnabas's Anglican Church, Balwyn. After suffering serious burns to his hands, he went to live at Deepdene; he became a music and drama critic as well as a writer on international policy for the Argus and other papers. Survived by his wife, he died on 15 December 1925 at Nice, France, where he had undergone surgery. His estate was sworn for probate at £19,825.5

    The wedding of Mr. John Alexander Ballantyne, third son of Mr. James Ballantyne, of "Myamyn," Glenferrie-road, Malvern, and Miss Edith Lilian Stephens, youngest daughter of Mr. Westmore G. Stephens, of "Wolverton," Malvern-road, Toorak, was celebrated on 2nd June at the Armadale Baptist Church by the Rev. Alexander Gordon, M.A.
    The church was decorated by the friends of the bride with white poppies, fern, and palms, and Mr. H. Sumner Martin, LL.B., played suitable hymeneal music. The bride, who was given away by her father, wore an Empire dress of white Oriental satin, trimmed with handsome Brussels lace, and carried a bouquet of choice white blooms.
    The bridesmaids were the Misses Margaret Salter, Ruby Rees, and Elsie Reid. They wore Empire gowns of heliotrope cloth and lace, and carried shower bouquets of heliotrope chrysanthemums.
    As the bridal party left the church the Misses Mairs, Luke, and Ruth Stephens (bride's nieces) scattered rose-leaves in their path. The bridegroom's presents to the bridesmaids were amethyst necklets. Mr. James Ballantyne (brother) was best man. The bride's mother wore an Empire gown of handsome grey brocade, trimmed with old lace ; becoming pink and grey bonnet; and carried a bouquet of pink roses. The bride's sister came in an Empire gown of grey cloth, relieved with mandarin velvet and lace ; hat of Ottoman silk and mandarin.
    After the ceremony a reception was held at the residence of the bride's parents, and wedding tea was served in a marquee on the lawn. The bride travelled in a tweed coat and skirt, small, smart hat, and a handsome set of white fox furs. On their return they will reside at "Koomba," Spring-road, Malvern. John Alexander was born October 21st 1874 at North Melbourne and died at Malvern May 3rd 1949. John, or Uncle Jack as we knew him, was a small energetic man, keen on sport; played cricket and baseball in his youth and in later years became a keen bowler. He had a good tenor voice and sang for many years in the choir of the Armadale Baptist Church. The following is taken from the Cyclopedia of Victoria, page 465
“ John Alexander Ballantyne, Dental Surgeon, M.A.C.D. High St., Malvern is a native of Victoria, having been born in North Melbourne in the year 1875, and is the third son of Mr. James Ballantyne, of Malvern. He was educated at the Wesley College, Melbourne, and on the completion of his scholastic career entered into mercantile pursuits, which he followed for some time, and then decided to study for the dental profession. He was with Mr. E. E. Haworth, dentist, of Collins Street, while pursuing his studies at the Dental College, where he obtained the degree of M.A.C.D. in 1900. In the following year he passed the necessary examination before the Dental Board, and commenced the practice of his profession at his present address, high Street, Malvern. He is an enthusiastic cricketer and plays for Malvern in the League contests”.
About 1908 he married Edith Stephens, a wealthy woman, whose family had a drapers shop in Bourke Stret Melbourne. For many years they lived in a large attic house in Spring Road, Malvern, designed and built by my father, George.
After the children grew up, Jack and Edith moved to a smaller house in Wilks Avenue, Malvern. They also owned a small orange grove at Curlwaa NSW on the Murray River. They also had a holiday house called “Glen Leith” at Upper Beaconsfield (in A’Beckett Road.)1

  • 31 Jan 1939: BLAZE NEAR BERWICK. Homes in Danger.
    BERWICK, Monday. - A week-end home was destroyed and several other properties were endangered by a fire, which broke out shortly after 2 p.m. today near the reservoir, between Beaconsfield and Beaconsfield Upper.
    The fire ran up Walker's Gully toward Upper Beaconsfield. When the wind changed from the north to the west it headed toward Tumuc Valley and valuable orcharding districts. A change to the south about 7 pm helped to quell the intensity of the fire and aided the fighters in bringing it under control.
    The weekend home of Miss D. Rogers and its contents were destroyed, and a shed and a garage on the property of Mr. J. Ballantyne, and a shed on Mr. Ken Hudson's property were also destroyed.
    Strenuous efforts on the part of the fire-fighters saved the homes of Mr. Ballantyne, Dr. Day, Miss O. Bennie, and Mr. K. Hudson. Other houses which were in danger were those of Judge Bevan (the hedge of which caught fire), Mr. V. a'Beckett, Mrs. Renfrey, Mr. Hudson, sen., and Mr. C. R. Walker. Mr. Walker was delivering a lecture in Berwick in aid of the bush-fire appeal when he was called to his home.
    At 10.30 pm the fire was still burning in the timber country east of Beaconsfield Upper, but it is believed that no houses are in immediate danger. The fire was fought by approximately 300 volunteers from Beaconsfield, Upper Beaconsfield, Berwick, Dandenong, and surrounding districts.

    His has been a varied and exciting experience over since be left his native shores, and has been in ten stunts in France. He is evidently "winning his spurs" in a practical manner, for he qualified as an officer before leaving Australia, and is now successfully climbing the ladder.8

Land-Note1 Oct 1885 PAK-117. Application for purchase lists the improvements on the property. At the time the occupiers of the adjoining lands were Dr Torrance and Miss Christian. Richards had built a 2 roomed weatherboard house (22ftx12ft) valued £100, a cow shed, a dairy and a fowl house. There was a 12ftx6ftx6ft dam, and one acre of cultivated land with fruit and vegetables. He had paid for all his fencing, consisting of 22 chains of post and two-rail split stuff, 16 chains of slab fencing, 2 chains of post nail and picket fence and 2 chains of log and brush fencing. The land was not fully enclosed. The value of the improvements was £220.8.0.5 
Land-Note19 Nov 1885 PAK-117. Six weeks later the crown lands bailiff visited the property and he assessed the total value of improvements at £87.3.0. He valued the house at £20 rather than the £100 Richards had valued them. In his remarks he notes that he was informed that Mr Richards and family resided on the land for the best part of the time. He also mentions that there may have been some grass seed thrown amongst the undergrowth but no trace of it could be seen now.6 
Land-Note5 Jan 1886 PAK-117. On 5 Jan 1886 the Office of Lands and Survey writes to Wm Richards that his application for the crown grant could not be granted at present as the Railway Department objected to the alienation from the crown at that time.6 
Land-Note25 Jun 1887 PAK-117. Richards fills in another application to purchase in June 1887, where Wim Brisbane writes a supporting letter. In this application Richards values the improvements at £128.15.0.6

Stodart, formerly owner of Mooramong Station, near Skipton, will regret to hear of his death, which occurred at his residence, St. George's road, Toorak, on Sunday, Mr. Stodart, who was the son of the late Dr. Stodart, was educated at the Geelong College, which he entered on the opening day in 1861. In those days Geelong College was conducted at Knowle House, in Skene street. Mr. Stodart had a great deal of experience in pastoral matters, especially in the Western district and at Mansfield. He retired from station life some time ago, and has since resided in Melbourne. Three of Mr. Stodart's sons have seen active service in the present war.12

    Provision for the possibility of grandchildren yet unborn was made in a settlement of a will case approved in the First Civil Court today by Mr Justice Lowe.
    The settlement also made provision for minors now interested in the estate of the late Mrs Emily Clare Frith, of Finch Street, East Malvern.
    Mrs Frith died on May 20, aged 82, leaving an estate valued at £7800. Objection to granting of probate was taken by Lilian Jean Frith, of Balcombe Road, Black Rock, a grand-daughter.
    By the settlement, Miss Frith withdrew the caveat against probate. Miss Frith and her brother, John Frederick Frith, a minor, will receive about £1650 each from the residue of the estate.
    The balance of the residue will be divided into six parts, of which four parts are to be divided between the children of Mrs Ethel Gowan, 60, a daughter of the testatrix.
    Mr Eugene Gorman. K.C., (for Miss Frith) said that Mrs Gowan's four children would share £1333 in equal parts.
    Mrs Gowan had agreed to forgo £1000 out of a legacy bequeathed to her, which would be divided in equal shares among Thomas Dean Frith, 56, Percival Flinders Frith, 57, John Frederick Frith, and Lilian Jean Frith.
    Right Disclaimed
    Mrs Gowan and her children disclaimed any right to receive income during the life of Thomas or Percival. On their deaths any future grandchildren of testatrix would share equally in the residue to which they were entitled under the will.
    Mr Justice Lowe granted probate and directed that all costs should be paid out of the estate.
    Mr Eugene Gorman, K.C.. and Mr H. A. Winneke (instructed by Messrs Madden, Butler, Elder and Graham) appeared for Miss Frith; and Dr. E. G. Coppel and Mr R. M. Eggleston (by Messrs Eggleston, Eggleston, and Lee) for the Equity Trustees.
