  • 7 Sep 1904: Upper Beaconsfield. The large paddock known as "Walkers" has just changed hands, Mr Harkins, of South Melbourne, being the purchaser. He has already made a start to improve it, having let a contract for grubbing to Messrs Shorthouse and Cameron, and the other day McLellan Bros' team of horses brought a house up from Melbourne, and deposited it on its new site. I have been informed that it is Mr Harkins intention to clear the greater portion of the six hundred and forty acres which the paddock contains. Joseph Henry Walker20

  • 21 Jan 1932: One of the worst bush fires in the memory of the oldest residents occurred here on Friday and Saturday, when a devastating fire swept over the district. On Friday, a fire, which had been burning in the scrub, fanned by a strong north wind, menaced the residence of Mr. McMillan, and in response to a call for help, about 50 men were soon engaged in a fierce fight to save the house and outbuildings. This they managed to do, and the fire then jumped the main road and threatened the residence of the Misses McLean; a break was burned, and the house was safe. On Saturday morning another fire commenced near Miss McLean’s boundary fence, and soon the residences of Messrs. Blair, Boker and Gilpin, and a number of others were in danger. A large band of willing workers managed to save the houses, but unfortunately they could not save the fine lemon orchard of Mr. McMillan, which was destroyed, also a week-end residence of Mr. Harkins. The heat was so great when the place got alight that it was im possible to get near it. In the after noon a sudden change of wind to the south caused the township to be menaced, and a desperate call for help was sent out, and in reply volunteers from Berwick, Narre Warren and Dandenong came to augment the local Bush Fire Brigade, until there were over 200 men, under the direction of Constable Barrett, and other leaders, engaged in the desperate effort to save the homes of Madame Montigue, Messrs. McBride, McDonald, Harvey-Smith, Rev. T. Greenwood, Robinson, J. Campbell, Major Campbell, Miss Elliott, J. Deville, C. Ellis, Claydon, Wright, Binding and Brown. The worst fight was at “Kyogle,” Mr. McDonald’s house; at one time it was felt that this fine residence would go, but the determined fight put up by the willing workers saved it. Here it was that anxiety was felt for one band who had become surrounded by flames, but they managed to get clear, although some of them succumbed to heat and smoke after getting out. The fine garden and plantation of Major Campbell was swept by the fire, despite the efforts of the workers, and hundreds of pounds worth of valuable plants and trees were destroyed, and the fine house was only saved by the superhuman efforts of the fire fighters. Miss Elliott’s house got alight, and part of the roof had to be stripped off before the fire could be put out. Mr. Ellis had the fence and pavilion attached to his tennis court destroyed, and the fire swept through his orchard, only being stopped within a few feet of the house. The house of Mr. Wright was saved by burning a break, as was Mr. Brown’s house and lemon orchard.
    On Sunday afternoon a small fire developed in Salisbury Gully, but it was soon got under control; whilst this was being put out an urgent call for help came from “The Towers,” Mr. Berglund’s property. A large body of men were rushed out, and the fire was got under control before very much damage was done. On Sunday a fire, which had started on the Saturday in Cordner’s Gully, crossed the Officer rd., and threatened the orchard of Mr. F. Love, but it was kept out, and, with the exception of the loss of some fencing, not very much damage was done.   • 3 Dec 1934: DEATH AND DISTRESS IN GIPPSLAND - WATER SUBMERGES HOMES - Many Refugees at Garfield
    A report from Garfield last night stated that hundreds of people are homeless there and were taking refuge In the Mechanics' institute and the hotel.
    Rescues were effected by police from barns and isolated houses. Mr. Patrick Breenan a resident of the town has been missing since Friday night, and as his horse and jinker have been found fears are felt for his safety.
    Reports of devastation, distress, and heroic rescues came from many parts of Gippsland yesterday. Lives were lost. Incalculable damage was done, and the homes of hundreds or persons were invaded by the flood waters. A man was drowned, and two children also, it is believed, were drowned near Lang Lang.
    Residents along the Latrobe Valley in the vicinity of Traralgon, and those in the low-lying portions of the town, passed through a nightmare on Friday. When dawn broke on Saturday the town for half a mile was submerged, and the Latrobe River had broken its banks, flooding the valley for miles. Toward midnight the creek came across the flat near the butter factory like a sea. People were trapped in their homes and were rescued with difficulty. Many sprang out of bed into two feet of water, while others awoke to see their furniture floating The ringing of the firebell gave the first warning. With torches the police waded into the flood, sometimes up to their armpits. First-constable J. L .Lowe slipped and dislocated his arm, but, pulling it in again, he continued the rescue work throughout the night. Some of the houses had four feet of water in them by daybreak. All the hotels and boarding-houses were filled with refugees.
    About 2 o'clock Mr Tom Maskrey, a share farmer, heard the pigs squealing. Jumping out of bed he found the house full of water. As the water rose rapidly. Mr Maskrey, his wife and three children and a farm hand, took refuge in the ceiling with the house rocking in the waves, and all but the roof submerged They remained in the ceiling until rescued by a crew in a boat from Lakes Entrance after 4pm on Saturday. The water rose to within a foot of the celling. The boat crew got into difficulties shortly after they had stoved in the side of the house and taken the stranded people aboard. Despite the frantic efforts of the crew the rushing current washed the boat toward the railway bridge, which was just projecting above the flood waters. Dr. Rees one of the crew, threw a rope around a telegraph-post enabling the boat to be anchored .After a rest the crew rowed the boat to a clump of trees alongside the railway line where a lifeline was thrown out. The boat was pulled in and the children were carrled to safety along the partially submerged railway track. Hundreds of people who witnessed the rescue cheered loudly as the marooned people came to land. .....7

At the age of thirteen Ray Phillip left school and took a job building packing cases. He continued to work in a variety of occupations including, building contracting, welding, drafting, farming, and finally setting up a small nursery business for “pin money”, when he retired. Everything he did was well done and the nursery venture now has 14 plastic igloos, two glass houses, and an enormous shade area.
Ray and Helen had their house and part of the nursery destroyed on Ash Wednesday - Ray wasted no time and in less than three months they were living in a new house.
Despite his ability and success, Ray remained a “private” man, whose love for his family and all young people, was well known, as was his generosity. He enjoyed giving his plants to local charities, and any child who wanted a plant for Mother’s day could be sure of success if they had two cents to “pay” for it.
A delightful, mischievous sense of humour, a ready smile and a sane outlook, made it a pleasure to meet Ray on the relatively few occasions he came into the village. We will all miss him.12

The Upper Beaconsfield Branch of C.W.A. are happy to announce the 60th Anniversary of their branch. It is one of five branches formed and founded on July 15, 1926 and known as Victoria League Women's Institute.

Long time resident of the area, Mrs. Alice Gibbs, died recently aged 94. She is survived by her two sons, one of whom Lou, lives in Albers Road. Mrs. Gibbs came originally from Surrey Hills where she was actively involved in St. Barnaby's Church and the Red Cross. The family moved to Dewhurst where Mrs. Gibbs continued her church involvement as a member of the Ladies Guild of the Dewhurst Church. When the creation of Cardinia Dam necessitated a move to Upper Beaconsfield, Mrs. Gibbs positive attitude to “progress” stood her in good stead. She was a fine needlewoman and despite poor eyesight was still crocheting at 90. She had an impressive button collection of around 9,000 buttons, ranging from very early items such as painted china buttons, Crimean war buttons and large coat buttons up to modern plastic ones. The collection was left to another fine Upper Beaconsfield needlewoman and friend, Helen Phillips.11

    The October meeting of Berwick - Beaconsfield Upper branch of the Save the Children Fund was hostessed by Mrs Barbara Rodd, 9 Brown Road, Officer, assisted by Mrs Margaret Rogers and Mrs Helen Phillips. The morning coffee eats as usual were much too "moreish" to resist, so there was much eating and chatter before getting down to the tasks at hand.
    This meeting had a number of absentees through illness and all hope everyone recovers very quickly.
    Many functions were discussed and it has been decided to have a film luncheon at the Gala Theatre, Dandenong, on November 1st, "Goodbye, Mr Chips".
    Mrs Barbara Rodd has kindly offered her home for a function to be held on Sunday, December 7. It will probably be in the form of a "Hill Billy" type barbecue at 6 p.m.
    The street stall will be in operation all day in Berwick Main Street on Friday, November 8, and the branch will have loads of marvellous cakes, biscuits and jams for sale.
    Funds are swelling very favourably and the branch was able to forward a cheque for $450 to Headquarters, to be sent to the Kensington Welfare S.C.F. Project, which is for the care of children of working mothers. This service is in operation from 7.30 a.m. to 5 p.m. It is a very worthwhile project and deserves much support.
    The November meeting will be held at the home of Mrs Elzink, St. Georges Road, Upper Beaconsfield. Anne Maria Elzink21
