  • 13 Dec 1921: COLLAPSE IN BATHROOM. Collins Street Doctor's Death.
Dr W. Beattie Smith, a well known Melbourne physician, collapsed in a bathroom at his residence at Tasma, Parliament place, East Melbourne, last night, and died almost immediately.
About 10 o'clock Mr Thomas Gurney, a city architect, whose rooms are near a bathroom, heard the sound of a heavy fall in the bathroom, and found the door of the bathroom closed. He stood on a chair, and looking through the fanlight, saw Dr Smith lying on the floor. With the help of Dr G Horne, also an inmate of the house, he burst the door open, but when Dr Horne examined him, Dr Smith was dead. Earlier in the day Dr Smith had seemed in good health and had seen patients.
Dr Beattie Smith was one of the best known Australian experts on mental diseases. For many years he was in the State service in the Victorian asylums for the insane, and acted as super-intendent at Ararat and Kew. He lectured at the Melbourne University on mental diseases, and occupied important positions at successive medical congresses.
After having left the State service he became a consultant in Collins street. Dr. Beattie Smith was a Scottish graduate. He was aged about 68 years.4
