Note* | 30 Apr 1896 | James Kerwin, sworn and examined. 387, To the Chairman.—I am a storekeeper in Beaconsfield, quite near here. I was born here. I have 2 acres of land in connexion with the store. I am about 5 miles from the Beaconsfield station. There is a lot of difficulty in getting the goods up, because it is all uphill. I send a good lot of wood from the Beaconsfield railway station. I spend about £100 a year in railway freight for the goods I receive. I do not cart the firewood myself; the men who cut the wood and the wood merchants cart it. I would favour a line from Oakleigh as it seems likely to be the easiest to build. There are aoout 30 men in the gullies at present getting gold; about 280 ozs. went from this district last year ; they are working in Haunted Gully, Welcome Gully, Flannigan's Gully, and others; and therr is every prospect of a payable reef turning up. I am not particular which route it is as long as it comes to Beaconsfield ; it would be a great difference for me to cart my goods 1 1/2 miles instead of 7 all uphill. If I had a railway as near as that I would probably sell tea at a penny a pound less. The witness withdrew.5 |
