Village Bell*Oct 2000 The shire has erected a new flagpole at the cenotaph. The old flagpole was showing signs of wear, it was rusting in places. The old flagpole was donated to the RSL and the township by Mr Charles Roy Walker, then of Fassifern, in memory of his son Roy who was killed in 1943. Roy Walker's sister, Mrs Audrey Ridgeway of Berwick, was pleased to know that the old flagpole has been "recycled". Keith Ewenson and his son saw the council workers who were demolishing the flagpole, and saved it. They have removed all of the rusty and dangerous parts and it will proudly fly the flag in the garden of 1 McBride Road, adjacent to the Cenotaph. Charles Roy 'Roy' Walker, Keith Ewenson6

Originally pegged 40 acres on 9 Oct 1876, but before he was granted a lease the new land act came into force which allowed only 20 acres per selector. Adams could either take it or leave it. Later on 1/3 to 1/2 chain was taken off his land to provide access to Ford. Adams was upset as this was where he wanted to build his house. He did build a log hut measuring 10x15 of sawn logs and stuff and bark, named Holyrood.3,4

Land-Note6 May 1878 PAK-125. Berwick 6 May 1878. Sir, I saw by the Gazette of 19th ulto that the licence for my selection in the Parish of Pakenham was ready for issue the amount being £1 18/. Accordingly, Mr Brisbane here sent a cheque for the amount on the 25th to the receiver which was returned to me cancelled as the amount ought to have been £2 - 6 including I suppose 2/6 for license which was not stated in the Gazette as the total carried out was £1.18/- and as I have had no notice from the Land Office of the amount payable that was the reason of the mistake. I took the cheque back to Brisbane to get it rectified, but whether he was done so or not I do not know as I have had no receipt from the receiver. Will you kindly let me know when ... time for payment. I have the honor to remain your most obedient servant William Adams.8

Village Bell*Oct 2000 The school was well placed for the orchardist families whose holdings were scattered along the creek. After petitions from local families, the Stoney Creek site was notified in the Government Gazette February 1883. Contractor Mr W. H. Dale erected the portable weatherboard building by November 1883. State School 2560, North Beaconsfield opened on the 11th December 1883 under Head Teacher Marthe Lawton with an enrolment of 22 children.28

  • 28 Sep 1887: A fire occured at Beaconsfield on Wednesday last by which the residence of Mr. W. H. Dale was reduced to ashes. Nothing was saved except one box, his loss being estimated at about £600. We believe that Mr. Dale's place was insured for £200 which will not half cover his loss.34
  • 3 Mar 1894: THIS DAY. At Half-past Three O'Clock. At Kirwin's Produce Store Opposite Railway Station, Beaconsfield, 20-acre ALLOTMENT on which are erected Two W.B. Houses, now occupied by Mr. W H Dale. By Order of the Mortgagee.

Each house has a tank capable of holding 2000 gallons. The land is situated in the most picturesque part of Beaconsfield, that far-famed locality for health. The houses are fitted with every convenience suitable for a country life. The garden is well stocked with fruit-bearing trees, surrounded by a creek affording excellent fishing.   • 4 Dec 1926: MAKING OF MEN. THE BOYS' BRIGADE. GENERAL FOOTT'S TRIBUTE.
    "Fellows physically fit were also mentally fit, for no fool would be a gymnast," said, Brigadier-General C. H. Foott, after inspecting the 1st Brisbane Company of the Boys' Brigade in their hall at Enoggera-terrace last night.
    The occasion was the 14th annual inspection of the company, which is under the command of Captain G. Orr, aided by Lieutenants R. Tait, L. Milliner, C. Leaver, J. Wilkie, E. Milliner, F. Cherry, and Staff-Sergeant G. Horsburgh.
    The company gave the general salute, performed rifle exercises and drill, and physical drill with arms, and gave ambulance, signalling, and vaulting horse displays, winding up with a march round led by its bugle band. After which the prizes won during the year were presented by Mrs. Hubert Robertson.
    Brigadier-General Foott opened his re marks by saying that he had a confession to make. He had arrived very tiled and expecting to be bored, but he had been interested every moment he had been there. - He had worn the Queen's and King's uniform for over 38 years, and he had been very much struck with the discipline he had seen that night, and was proud to sec the excellent physical training of the boys. He hoped that next year their commanding officer would let him know in time, so that he could put the Victoria Barracks drill ground at their disposal. There they would have more room to manoeuvre and more room for visitors.
    The Mayor of Brisbane (Alderman W. A. Jolly) said that he had supposed that he had discovered all the worth-while institutions in Brisbane since he had been in office, but the Boys' Brigade was a "new one on him." There was nothing wrong with Australia while they could produce such boys. When he arrived he thought his old friend, Mr. Tait, had got an army together "to defend the hills of Ithaca, Captain Orr was tendering a very special service to the community. He was engaged in the greatest of all work—that of making men.
    Lieutenant-Colonol F. W. G. Annand commented on the "nip" about the work of the boys that made all the difference in an inspecting officer's eyes, and Captain Orr, replying, sketched generally the work of the brigade.28
  • 1 Jul 1931: BASE COMMANDANT Brigardier-General Foott Retires.
    In accordance with a decision reached only within the last few days, Brigadier-General C. H. Foott, base commandant of the 3rd Military District and commander of the 4th Division, retired yesterday, after 42 years' service with the Australian military forces. The announcement was a surprise to many. Though not entirely unconnected with the retrenchments now being made in the defence services. General Foott's retirement was voluntary. He explained yesterday that, in view of the fact that he was within a few years of the retiring age, and that he was in a position to retire now, he had elected to do so, as it was evident that he would thus be helping in the economy plans.
    Brigadier-General Foott expressed regret yesterday at severing his connection with the military forces after such long service. Since he had first held a command he had never been "let down," he said, which was a very great thing for a senior officer to be able to say. His appreciation of the work done by members of the military forces is strikingly expressed in the following special order issued by him on his retirement:—
    In relinquishing command of the 3rd District Base and 4th Division, after having held them for 18 months and 12 months respectively, I desire to thank all the officers, warrant, and non-commissioned officers, and men of the military forces, and the civilian staffs of those formations for very loyal and unselfish service.
    The period through which we have just passed has called for great energy and sacrifice on the part of every member of the military forces. That you have answered the call so well is shown by the healthy and vigourous condition of the forces I feel sure that the future, whatever it may bring forth, will show a continuance of those fine qualities by the exercise of which you have made the force what it is.
    I only wish that the extent and nature of the work you do, the time and energy you spend in and on the military forces, were better known and better appreciated by all the people. Again, I thank you for your assistance and I wish you all the best of fortune.
    Of the 42 years spent by Brigadier-general Foott in the service 39 were spent in the militia and permanent forces. He enlisted in the Brisbane volunteer engineeers, as a sapper, and in 1892 he joined the permanent forces. He holds the distinction of having passed the examination for captaincy in both engineers and artillery under British regulations. During the Great War he gave distinguished service on Gallipolli, in Egypt and France, for which he was six times mentioned in despatches. He was promoted from major to lieutenant-colonel at Anzac, and in March, 1917, he went to France as chief engineer of the Australian Corps with the rank of Brigadier-general. After the armistice he was appointed deputy director-general of repatriation and demobilisation, and he was honoured with a C.M.G. After his return to Australia he held a number of important posts, including that of base commandant in Queensland. in December, 1929, he was appointed base commandant in Victoria, and on August 1, 1930, commander of the 4th Division.
    It was learned yesterday that the position of base commandant is not likely to be filled immediately.29
  • 5 Mar 1934: BEACONSFIELD UPPER.—Owing to the death of Mr W J Harvey-Smith and the resignations of Mr Francis and Mr Glismann three vacancies occurred on the trusteeship of the public hall and children's playground.     To popularise Beaconsfield Upper as a health and holiday resort, a series of reunion entertainments has been arranged for the Australia Day week-end, January 26 to 28. Beaconsfield Upper now has an excellent main road approach, an electricity supply from Yallourn, and a modern guest house. Former residents and visitors have been invited to attend, and the organisers and members of the organisations which will participate hope for a large attendance. Tennis tournaments will be held on the Saturday and Monday, and on Saturday night the local branch of the Country Women's Association will hold a social gathering, at which Lieut.-Colonel Knox, M.L.A., will officially open the celebrations. There will be special Church services on Sunday, and on Monday a burlesque cricket match on the recreation ground, followed by a ball in the evening.   • 29 Jun 1942: DEATH OF BRIG-GEN C. H. FOOTT. Distinguished Military Career
    Brig-Gen Cecil Henry Foott, CB, CMG, died on Saturday at his home at Upper Beaconsfield. He was 66, and had served for 42 years with the Australian Military Forces, 39 of them as a member of the permanent forces. When he retired on June 30, 1931, he was Base Commandant of the 3rd (Victoria) Military District and commander of tile 4th Division.
    In September, 1940, he was co-opted by Army Headquarters, given command of the VDC. He retired from this position this year.
    Born at Bourke, NSW, on January 16, 1876, he was a son of the late Mr T. W. Foott, or Dundoo Station, Q. His mother was the late Mrs Mary Hannay Foott, a well-known poet and author.
    Brig-Gen Foott joined the Queensland Permanent Artillery as a lieutenant, and in 1901 was posted to the Royal Australian Engineers. At the Staff College, Camberley, England, he underwent a course of instruction in 1912-13 and passed with honours. He then went to Royal Naval College, Portsmouth, and was there when war broke out in 1914. He was appointed DAQMG of the 2nd London Division (Territorial Forces). In January, 1915, he joined Australian Divisional Headquarters in Egypt as major. He served at Gallipoli and was promoted lieut-colonel at Anzac In June, 1915. He was In France until the Armistice, and was then appointed deputy director-general of repatriation and demobilisation.
    Returning to Australia in 1919, he subsequently held a number of important military posts, and was ADC to the Governor-General from 1921 to 1924. In 1927 he was made an additional ADC to His Majesty the King.
    His decorations included the 1914/15 star; the British war medal; the Victory Medal: the Order of the While Eagle (Serbian) with swords. During his active service he was mentioned in despatches 6 times.
    He married in 1901 Miss Isabel Agnes, only daughter of Mr G. T. McDonald, of Rocklea, Q. He leaves one son, Capt T. H. B. Foott, and 2 daughters.
    The funeral will take place today at 10am at Berwick Cemetery from Christ Church of England, Berwick. The service will be conducted by Rev E. Panelli. Funeral arrangements were made by Messrs W. J. Garner and Son, Berwick.32

FOOTT, CECIL HENRY (1876-1942), regular army officer, was born on 16 January 1876 at Bourke, New South Wales, son of Irish-born Thomas Wade Foott, stock inspector and station-owner, and his Scottish-born wife, Mary Hannay Foott, née Black, teacher, poet and journalist. After his father's death in 1884 he was educated at Toowoomba and Brisbane Grammar schools and later qualified as a mechanical engineer.
Foott was commissioned second lieutenant in the Queensland Militia Garrison Artillery in March 1895 but joined the Queensland Permanent Artillery in September 1896 as a lieutenant. In March 1901 the military forces of the Australian States were transferred to Federal control and in July Foott was promoted captain in the Royal Australian Artillery; that year, on 15 October, he married Isobel Agnes McDonald at Moorooka, Queensland.
In 1902 Foott transferred to the Royal Australian Engineers but remained in Queensland as staff officer, engineer services. He went to England for technical training in 1908 and on returning was staff officer and commander, R.A.E., in Victoria in 1909-10. Promoted major in August 1909, his next posting was to Army Headquarters, Melbourne, where in 1910-11 he was director of works and in 1911-12 director of engineers. He attended the staff college at Camberley, England, in 1912-13 and in 1914 was attached to the British Army in England for further training.
In January 1915, in the rank of major, Foott joined Major General (Sir) William Bridges's 1st Division, Australian Imperial Force, as deputy adjutant and quartermaster general. After the Gallipoli landing Bridges was mortally wounded in May and in August Foott, who had been promoted lieutenant-colonel in June, was re-posted within the division as assistant adjutant and quartermaster general, an appointment he held for the next two years. During this time the division withdrew from Gallipoli, reorganized in Egypt and then served on the Western Front, Foott was appointed C.M.G. and awarded the Serbian Order of the White Eagle (4th class) in 1916.
He was transferred to A.I.F. depots in Britain as deputy adjutant and quartermaster general in July 1917, and in March 1918 was posted to Lieutenant-General Sir William Birdwood's Australian Corps in France as chief engineer. Although Foott was an engineer officer this was his first appointment as such during the war and he retained it after Lieutenant-General Sir John Monash took command of the Corps on 1 June. After the Armistice, when the A.I.F.'s Department of Repatriation and Demobilization was established in London, Foott became its deputy director general with Monash as director general. For his war service he was mentioned in dispatches seven times and in 1919 was appointed C.B. His only brother, Private Arthur Patrick Foott, was killed in action at Passchendaele.
Foott returned to Australia in November 1919 after an eight-year absence and his A.I.F. appointment ended in February 1920. The post-war era which he faced as a regular officer in the Australian Military Forces was one of economy in defence, with few prospects of promotion. In October 1920, as a colonel and honorary brigadier general, he joined the newly formed Australian Staff Corps, then in 1922-25 served as a colonel in various posts at Army Headquarters in the quartermaster general's branch. In 1926 he was posted to Queensland where he was given, concurrently and temporarily, for the next four years three command appointments including that of base commandant, 1st Military District. By late 1929 the Depression had forced further cuts in military spending. In August 1930 Foott was transferred from Queensland to Victoria to be temporary commander of the 4th Australian Division as well as temporary commandant and base commandant of the 3rd Military District. In these circumstances, at the age of 55, he was transferred to the reserve of officers in July 1931; his army career ended then although it was not until February 1936 that he was officially placed on the retired list as an honorary brigadier general.
Foott's wife had died in 1926 and on 6 September 1934 he married Agnita Regnier Cogan at St James Anglican Church, Pakenham, Victoria. Survived by his wife and the son and two daughters of his first marriage, he died of a coronary occlusion on 27 June 1942 at Upper Beaconsfield, and was buried in Berwick cemetery with Anglican rites. His estate was valued for probate at £975. Charles Bean described him as 'a man of educated tastes and fine intellect' and 'an officer of great ability' who became 'one of the notable figures in the Australian Imperial Force'. His portrait, by George Coates is in the Australian War Memorial.9

painter and craftworker, was born in Castlemaine, Victoria, eldest of the five children of George Thomas McDonald, a surveyor, and Amelia Margaret, née Mitchell. She moved to Queensland in childhood when her father took up a property, Cluden, outside Gladstone. Educated at home, she was quite intimidated by the sophistication of her four younger cousins (the daughters of Edward Mitchell), but her aunt Letita was a painter and a possible role model.
Before attending the National Gallery School, Melbourne, in 1888-89, where she studied under Frederick McCubbin, Isabel exhibited drawings at the 1887 Queensland National Agricultural and Industrial Association (QNAIA) Exhibition in Brisbane. In 1892 she was a student of Godfrey Rivers at the Brisbane Technical College; she also attended Miss Baily's embroidery classes. She travelled between Brisbane and Sydney and Melbourne quite frequently, re-enrolling at the National Gallery School in 1895. She is also thought to have taken lessons from Tom Roberts and, indeed, was painted by him in 1895: Profile Portrait of a Young Girl (NGV). She exhibited oil paintings with the Queensland Art Society in 1892-1901; in 1898 she showed a carved screen and chair as well.
At Brisbane in 1901 Isabel McDonald married Cecil Henry Foott (1876-1942), an army officer who retired with the rank of brigadier general. They had one daughter, Celia Mary Lumsden (b.1902), and two sons (b.1904 and 1908). Her photograph with her two eldest children was taken by the professional Brisbane photographer Ada Driver (1868-1954), known for employing largely women staff in her Queen Street studio (and playing the violin to them during the lunch breaks).
Isabel's painting career seems to have ceased with her marriage but craftwork did not suffer the same strictures. She included a bookplate, carved box and copper jug in the 1907 Women's Work Exhibition together with a painting, Golden August, executed eight years earlier. At the 1908 QNAIA Exhibition she was awarded a first prize for a silky-oak sideboard carved in early Jacobean style.
The birth of her third child probably put paid to Isabel's craft activities too. She travelled to England with her husband in 1912-19 and apparently had a busy public life. Nothing more is known of her until July 1926 (just before her death) when she became an executive member of the Red Cross in Brisbane.1

    The death of Mrs. C.H. Foott. which took place at her residence, Victoria Barracks, Brisbane, on December 29, will be a source of deep regret to very many friends in Brisbane and on the Darling Downs, as well as in Victoria, where General and Mrs. Foott resided for several years. The late Mrs. Foott was the only daughter of the late Mr. G. T. M'Donald (a well-known Queensland surveyor) and Mrs. M'Donald, and was born in Victoria, but spent most of her girlhood in Queensland, her parents having made their home at Lirmeah, Rocklea. Her marriage with General Foott took place in 1902, and when war was declared General and Mrs. Foott and their family were in England. Mrs. Foott returned to Queensland, and while her husband was on active service she lived at Wynnum, throwing herself with enthusiasm into war work, especially such activities as the Red Cross and the Engineers' Comforts Fund. After the Armistice, when General Foott undertook demobilisation work, Mrs. Foott rejoined him in England in 1919. On returning to Australia her husband was appointed to Melbourne, where they lived until they came to Brisbane last year, arriving on December 28, 1925. During the period of her residence in Melbourne Mrs. Foott took an active interest in child welfare work, was a member of the committee of the Benevolent Society, and an enthusiastic member of the Melbourne Arts and Crafts Society. Since her arrival in Brisbane Mrs. Foott's health has caused considerable anxiety to her friends, and her illness took a serious form some months ago. In spite of never being robust, however, the deceased lady maintained her interest in art and handicrafts, and was also an enthusiastic supporter of the Queensland Bush Book Club. As a member of the old Brisbane Sketching Club examples from her brush adorn the homes of many of her friends. The late Mrs. Foott it survived by two daughters, the Misses Celia and Sydney Foott, and one son, Mr. Alan Foott. Her brothers include Dr. J. E. Fancourt M'Donald (of Willowburn) and Dr. S. F. M'Donald. of Brisbane.15

  • 28 May 1931: WEDDINGS. FOOTT-ANDERSON. SYDNEY, May 27.
    Great interest was displayed in the marriage of Mr Thomas Harry Brudenell Foott (Australian Staff Corps) and Miss Bethia Anderson, which took place in St James' Church to-day. The bride is the daughter of Brigadier-General Anderson, late Royal Artillery, and private secretary to the Governor, and of Mrs A T Anderson, Ball Green, Turramurra. The bridegroom is the son of Brigadier General C H Foott, Base Commandant Victoria, and the late Mrs Foott. The Rev P A Micklem, assisted by the Rev Ronald Cameron, officiated at the ceremony. The bride wore a gown of pearl coloured satin shot with faint pink. It was made in a modified empire style, and leaves of pearl and diamante embroidery ran from each shoulder. The train was lined with gold and silver brocade patterned with tulips, and was attached to the shoulders with diamante bretelles. Her veil of needle run tulle had been worn by her mother and grandmother, and she carried a bouquet of lilies of the valley and tropical lilies. The bridesmaids were the Misses Clarice Faithfull Anderson, Sydney Foott, Gwen Ramsay, Jean Ramsay, Betty Chisholm, Sadie Budge, and Margaret Vernon. Miss Rosemary Game, daughter of the Governor (Sir Philip Game) and Lady Game, was train-bearer. The bridegroom was attended by brother officers of the Australian Staff Corps who were Messrs Ronald M Nicoll, Evan Jenkins JEM Calder, Rowan Reeves, Frank Hussey, Kenna, and Gamlin. The reception was held at Government House, where about 350 guests were received first by the Governor and Lady Game, and then by Brigadier General and Mrs. Anderson. Mr. and Mrs. Foott left for Melbourne after the reception. The bride's travelling ensemble comprised a frock of pale pink wool georgette worn under a pastel pink coat, with collar and cuffs of grey fur. Her hat was of pink velour and ermine, and she carried a grey muff decorated with pink camellias.9
  • 3 Jun 1931: A WOMAN’S LETTER
    Weddings are usually dull affairs, but the only dull thing about Betliia Anderson’s wedding to her upstanding lieutenant was the weather. Inside St. James’s the gold epaulets of the Navy jutted impressively from broad shoulders, the Men of Mons blazed with medals, and sparkling-eyed little Girl Guides stood at ease: in the Guide interpretation of the term. Guests were taken to their places with military alacrity by young soldiers, who afterwards merged into groomsmen or part of the general atmosphere.
    Many-comers were stirred by spurts of excitement as the important people trod the aisle. The bride’s mother, Mrs. Anderson, squired by ’groom’s father, Brigadier-General Foott, caused nearly as much of a flutter as the bride. She carried' a cluster of roseate blooms against very correct frocking, beige gold in tone. The Governor’s lady also favored pale gold tones in her velvet wrap with its rich fur collar and cuffs. All Government House was there: the Governor, Commander Gifford in his Air Force blue, and the popular Miss Crowdy.
    There was no waltz or jazz step up the aisle about this bridal procession; in fact the principal and her seven attendants had rather the air of counting their paces to the altar. And this might have been the case, for the day previous a most careful rehearsal had been gone ; though, with Lady Game acting as the “bride.” Wattle, together with the rich, strong hues of marigold burned upon the altar, with, of course, a serving of time-honored white lilies. Rosemary Game, a nice mixture of innocence and primroses, was trainbearer, and this Letter liked the way in which the bridesmaids’ dresses fell in stiff folds, as though they had been sculped. Press photographers had a regular field-day; and one presumes that the patient crowds on the pavements in the streaming rain had their reward when swords glittered into an arch on St. James's steps, and the soldier and his lass passed to their car.
    At Government House you positively tripped over the photographers. Before the guests had arrived from the church they had their batteries trained on the staircase, they were settled on the terrace as closely as the poached egg on its toast, and they took flying shots at the ballroom, where a mile or so of table sparkled like the Aurora Australis with wedding presents. Only an auctioneer’s catalogue could find space for the details, but some family silver brought to Australia by Captain Neilley, of the 40th Regiment, in the days when it was a colony of his more or less ungracious Majesty George IV., and some spoons and forks which had served a forebear, William Mather, in 1760 and an Anderson grandsire in the same century called for note. Yet the real magnificence was the claret jug given by General and Mrs. Anderson to their daughter. It was solid silver, exquisitely chased and gold-lined; it had been a gift from the people of Mauritius to the General’s father. There was a silver salver from the Men of Mons and one from the groomsmen; there were cheques from the State Excellencies and from the Chief Justice Streets (and a dozen Or so more) ; there were phonograph records from Myrtle Meggy, including “The Song of the Nightingale,” books from poetess Ruth Bedford and a painting from the Roland Wakelins. Indeed there were so many pictures that Bethia should have enough to furnish the walls of the flat in Melbourne which is to be her new home. Clarice Faithfull Anderson, Sadie Budge, Betty Chisholm, Gwen and Jean Ramsay, Margaret Vernon and Sydney Foott were the shimmering golden girls who surrounded the parchment satin and Honiton lace of the bride.   • 25 Dec 1952: COL. A. FOOTT DIES. SYDNEY, Wednesday. The death occurred to-day at the Repatriation General Hospital, Concord, of Colonel Allan Foott, honorary area commissioner for New South Wales.
    He is survived by his widow. Col. Foott (48) was member of Sydney Diocesan Synod of the Anglican Church, Member of World Council of Churches and member of the Board of Barker College. He also was a member of planning committee in New South Wales in connection with the Call to the Nation.12

    The death occurred on Wednesday of Col. Thomas Brudenell ("Allan") Fooott, aged 48.
    Col. Foott was a son of the late Brig.-Gen. C. H. Foott, who was Chief Engineer of the Australian Corps in the First World War.
    Col. Foott, who was born in Brisbane, attended schools in England. Queensland and Scotch College, Melbourne. He entered Duntroon 1922, passing out in 1925 as Head Cadet and receiving the Sword of Honour and the King's Medal.
    Specialising in engineering. Col. Foott completed his training at Sydney University, receiving thé degree of Bachelor of Civil Engineering in 1927. He won a University College blue for shooting, rowing and football.
    In 1931 he married Bethia Anderson, daughter of the late Brig.-General A. T. Anderson and Mrs. Anderson, of Ball Green, Turramurra.
    As a member of the staff corps and an engineer, he served with various militia units and at army headquarters until the outbreak of war in 1939.
    He failed, for medical reasons, in his attempt to serve in the Middle East during the last war. At the outbreak of war with Japan he was on the staff of 1st Aust. Army.
    RETIRED IN 1945
    After his retirement from the Army in 1945, Colonel Foott devoted ( himself to the service of) various organisations. They included Toe H, of which he was honorary area commissioner for N.S.W., the Turramurra branch of the R.S.L., and the Prisoners' Aid Society. He was a member of the Sydney Church of England Diocesan Synod, a member of the World Council of Churches, a church warden of St. James Church, Turramurra, and a member of the board of Barker College. He was on the committee of The Call as the representative of the Archbishop and was also a committeeman of the New Settlers' League.
    Mrs. Foott survives him.
    The funeral service will be held to-day at St. James Church, Turramurra, starting at 11 a.m. Cremation will take place at the Northern Suburbs Crematorium.13

He is continuing the voyage to Melbourne in the ship but will later return to Perth.
    ... The team disbanded last April, when its contract expired, he said. However, several of the women members had stayed behind. Miss Fif Krios, of Melbourne, who was the pathologist, was one of these. Miss A. Penglazi, of Sydney, was now on the statistical staff of UM.R.R.A. in Athens, and Miss Sidney Foott, of Sydney, stayed as a welfare officer on the island of Samos. Miss Lesley Gorman, of Melbourne, a trained nurse, was now In Italy. The only other West Australian in the party, Miss Erna Grimm, was head of the office staff. She has now returned to this State.

  • 12 Feb 1948: BRISBANE GIRL CHOSEN FOR PRINCESS' STAFF. MISS SYDNEY FOOTT, formerly of Brisbane, has been annotated to the staff of Princess Elizabeth in a secretarial position. One of 10 Girl Guides who were asked to assist with the correspondence at the time of the Royal wedding, Miss Foott was asked to remain on as secretary to the Princess' private secretary. Miss Foott who is in her late 30's, is a daughter of the late Brigadier-General C. H. Foott. Her father was Base Commandant of 1st District Base, Brisbane, from 1926 to 1929. She completed her education at Somerville House. During the war, Miss Foott worked in the Defence Department in Melbourne. In 1945 she left for Greece, where she served for two years with the International Guide Service in reconstruction work.16

    Sydney Foott, daughter of the late Brig. Gen. C. H. Foott , Military Commandant in Brisbane from 1926 to 1929, has been appointed to the staff of H.R.H. Princess Elizabeth.
    Sydney was one of 10 Girl Guides who assisted with the correspondence at the time of the Royal Wedding.
    She is now secretary to the Princess' private secretary.17
  • 4 Mar 1948: ON QUEEN'S STAFF. MISS SYDNEY FOOTT, who assisted the clerical staff at Buckingham Palace during the week preceding the wedding of Princess Elizabeth, is now attached to Queen Elizabeth's staff at the Palace. Daughter of the late Brigadier General C. H. Foott, who was military Commandant in Brisbane from 1926-29 and the late Mrs. Foott, and sister of Colonel Allan Foott, of Turramurra. Miss Foott did confidential work at R.A.A.F. Headquarters in Melbourne during the war and in 1945 went to Greece with UNRRA. Before leaving for England she was given the freedom of the city of Kozani and the bronze decoration of the Greek Red Cross.18

  • 13 Dec 1944: MRS. G. F. TIVENDALE. THE DEATH at the Mercy Hospital on November 29, of Mrs. Ethel Georgeann Tivendale, wife of Mr. George Frederick Tivendale, of Officer, robs that district of one of its most respected citizens.
    Among other activities the late Mrs. Tivendale was a faithful member of the ACF, and that organisation will miss her greatly. Deceased, who was only 58, had been ill for some weeks before she passed away.
    Born at Canterbury, she was the daughter of the late Solomon and Rosetta Harris, of Beaconsfield Upper. Mr. Claud Harris, of Upper Beaconsfield, is a brother.
    Mrs. Tivendale endeared herself to all by her pleasant manner and friendly nature, and many friends join with her husband, three daughters and three sons in their grief at her death. Two of her boys are in the AIF, and the other in the RAAF.
    The funeral last Saturday was very largely attended, and there, ware a host of beautiful floral tributes. Before the lengthy cortege left for the Berwick cemetery, Mr. Alan T. Linnett, of the Congregational Church conducted a solemn-service at the home. He also officiated at the graveside. The coffin-bearers were Messrs. W. and E. Tivendale, C. Harris and J. Porter. The pall was carried by by Crs. C. Greaves and T. C. Whiteside; Messrs. G. Wakley, G. Crook, J. Hicks, G. Brunt, J. Reid, P. Brown, J. Adamson and A. Rix. W. J. Garnar and Son conducted the funeral.12

    Pictured on the left is Mr. George Frederick Tivendale, one of Officer's most highly esteemed residents.
    "Eighty-four years young", best describes this springhtly, alert man, who came to Officer as a boy 10 years of age — 74 years ago.
    Mr. Tivendale has been persuaded to set down on paper something of the early days of the district and here it is for the benefit of our readers.
    My parents lived at Embling Road, Malvern, where I was born on January 11th, 1878. At the age of five years I went to the Spring Road State School and continued on there until 1888, when we came to live at Officer.
    In that year the great land boom was on in Victoria, and father sold his home and bought a block of ground at the corner of Bay View road and the Prince's Highway, Officer, and built a house on it (now owned by Mr. K. Curran), and started a brick yard with the object of sending bricks to Melbourne, where there was a great demand for them owing to the building boom.
    There were four other yards starting at that time with the same objective, namely A. Fry's in Starling road, Holt's down near the Railway Station, H. Morey's where the Officer Tile Works are now, Recce's where Whiteside's now have an orchard, and my father's just next to Jack Hick's Pipe Works. At that time Mr. Jack Hicks, Snr., was making the bricks for Morey's.
    Burst of the Boom
    The boom did not last long, and when it finished all the brick yards closed down. Thousands of people in the City and elsewhere were out of work, and there was very little money about. Most of the Banks had closed their doors, and business generally was almost at a standstill.
    Father had laid out his money in the brick yard, and all he had left was 10 acres of ground with a home on it, and besides that he had a dray and two horses, which had been used for carting the bricks to the railway station. He also had two cows, two pigs, and a few fowls. We used to cure our own bacon, so we were not so badly off as some other folk, but money was very scarce.
    Officer School
    I attended the Officer State School for one year after we came to Officer. The school building was at that time on a half acre block, where the Officer Store now is, and was later rebuilt on its present site. There was no playground, and we used to play football and cricket on the main Highway. We weve not worried by passers-by, as there was very little traffic on the road then. The school building stood in the centre of the block and there was a row of big pine trees all around the boundary. The building was of one room, about 30 feet by 18 feet, with a lean-to along one site, which was used as a residence for the school master, his wife and two daughters, it being divided into two rooms. The school masters name was Lougier. He was moved to Gippsland after a couple of years, and a Mr. Stubbo took over; after him came Mr. J. Denholm.
    Wages 15/- a Week
    When I was about 14 I got a job with an English family, who lived in a fairly big weatherboard house they had built, where Mr. Reg. Barlee now lives. The family's name was Gower and Mr. Gower had a business in the City, and went in by train each day. His daughters kept a good many fowls, mostly show birds, and I helped to feed them and look after them, and did odd jobs. The land had not then been cleared, and was covered with scrub and trees. One night the house was burned down, and the brick house that Mr. Barlee now lives in was erected in its place. I was paid fifteen shillings per week and lived at home with my parents.
    I left this job after a while and went to help my father, who cut wood and carted it to the Railway Station to he sent to Melbourne. I had a few years at that, as there was nothing else to do. Most of the wood we cut was on the land now owned by Mr George Wakley. The trees were very thick and had been ringbarked for several years, so were all dry wood. We got 27/6 for a railway truck load of six ton — 60 feet to the ton.
    Laborers paid 4/- a day
    When I was 19 years of age I went over to Mt. Lyell, Tasmania, with Mr Jas. Adamson, of Beaconsfield. He was a carpenter on the Mine, and I got a job trucking underground, and later worked in the blacksmith's shop; we were paid 8/- per day there. The wages in Victoria were then 4/- per day for labourers. When I came home I worked for Mr. Adamson, and also Mr. Alex Miller, of Berwick, as builder's laborer, and got 5/- per day. After that I took on fencing jobs and have also split many thousands of posts. We sold these for 30/- per hundred, and used to pay 2/6 royalty to the owners of the land.
    In the early days there was always a bit of harvesting to be done around the district. One of our neighbours used to grow about 40 acres of oats every year, and I used to go and help him carting in, and he taught me how to build a hay stack. For a good many years I used to stack the hay for farmers around, the district. Sometimes we would get a job mowing, with a scythe.
    Hand Binding of Crops
    Later Mr. Julius Hilbrick, from Narre Warren, used to come around with his pair of horses and a back-delivery mower, and the crop was hand-bound. It took about five men to keep up with him, tying—and they would be moving too!
    Probably, some of the young farmers in these days would not know how a back delivery worked. The mower was much the same as now, only pulled by horses, and had a hinged board at the back of the blade with a trip attached, which you worked with your foot.
    Two men sat on the mower, one the driver and one the "putter-off." He had a rake and kept the hay coming straight onto the board until there was enough for a sheaf. He then released the trip and slid the hay off in a nice straight bundle, ready to be bound with a handful of the hay.
    Chaffcutters and Threshing Machines
    Mr Manks, from Clyde, used to travel around the district with his travelling chaff cutter, worked by steam engine, and he alao had a threshing machine. It was a busy day for the farmer when it arrived. It took 12 or more men to work it. The old man always fed the sheaves into the machine, and around our district I used to sometimes put up the straw stacks. He put through a 60 ton stack one day, working from 7 o'clock in the morning till 8 at night, and did the farmer put on some meals!
    The girls brought out the lunches in a clothes basket, and buckets of tea. The temperature that day was over 100 degrees. They liked it that way, because the grain came out easier when the weather was hot. We were paid 7/- per day and meals. One day we were stacking hay at Mr. Haw's place, who lived at the "Meadows," on the opposite side of the Cardinia Creek to where Mr. Dodson now lives, and while we were in having dinner one of the draught horses walked over an underground well. The covering gave way, and the horse fell into the well, which had 7 feet of water in it. Someone secured its head and kept it above water, while others ran over to Mr. Lecky's, who had some blocks and tackle, and after rigging it up with shear legs, we were able to get it out.
    Cardinia Park
    Mr. James Lucky was a very fine old gentleman who I believe was born at "Cardinia Park," an estate of 1150 acres, bounded on the west side by Cardinia Creek and extending eastward to where Mr. T. Mather lives now. I used to do odd jobs for Mr. Lecky, and had some very interesting talks with him about his early days there — how his father used to grow wheat on the flats along the Creek, and, after it was harvested, a load of the grain would be taken by bullock team to Brighton, to be ground into flour. His father and his man would camp at Brighton for a week, and just put some bells on the bullocks and let them roam to feed. Then, he would go into Melbourne, and purchase provisions; bags of sugar, a chest of tea and various other goods for the household, after which they would pick up as much flour, bran and pollard as they required and come back home. Mr. Lecky said it was a great treat if he was allowed to go on these trips.
    He also told me how at certain times of the year tribes of blackfellows would come down from the hills and camp in a bush paddock near the homestead. They had to lock up the dairy, as the blacks would go for the milk and cream.
    Game such as wild duck and fish were very plentiful along the Creek.
    That must have been over 100 years ago, as it is nearly sixty years since he told me this, and he wasn't a young man then.
    He lost his two sons —Jim and Merv.—in the First World War. Many a happy day I had out with the two lads, fishing, with Tom Kernot or Gill Egerton. Alex (Jim) Henry very often accompanied us on these trips.2
