Village Bell* | Oct 1983 | "STONYCROFT" stood on the north-east corner of the intersection of Split Rock and Berglund Roads. We are indebted for information to Mrs. Susan Pitman, the recent resident, and to Mr. Larry Osborn of Nar Nar Goon North, who has photographs taken when the house and garden were looking their best. The house was built by Mr. Walford (not to be confused with Professor Halford, another early resident), about 1880, as a house for his coachman. At the same time he built his own residence, "The Fernery", on the opposite side of Split Rock Road, 100 yards towards the Split Rock. That house was later moved to its present position at the corner of Salisbury and Sugar Loaf Roads. The two houses were generally similar, Mr. Walford's being on a larger scale with an additional pair of rooms at the back. A central passage went from front to back, with living rooms on one side and bedrooms on the other. At one side of the front door was a bay window, at the other a verandah. The weatherboard construction was rather rough, as one would expect in the early 1880's in what was then a remote place. Dwelling for a moment on "The Fernery", the journalist "Vagabond" referred to "Mr Walford's capital spring of fresh water" in an "Argus" article in 1885. The "Illustrated Guide to Upper Beaconsfield" published in 1899 had a picture of "The Fernery", and showed the position of "Walford's Fernery" on a map (reproduced in the recent publication "In the Wake of the Pack Tracks). However in the text, the "Guide" referred to "Robertson's Fernery", so presumably he had followed Walford. A later owner of "Stonycroft" was Mr. Simmons, who sold to Mr. H.J. Osborn in 1919. At that time there was an orchard of 8 or 9 acres, and a still for distilling eucalyptus oil, situated near the creek for its supply of cooling water. The Osborn family resided until 1970, when they sold to Dr. Bailey. Mr. and Mrs. Osborn were keen gardeners, and established a properly laid out garden. To care for it, run-off water was led in from the roadside to a lily pool, and from there piped to a large concrete tank; it was probably this tank that subsequently gave rise to speculation about a cellar. Later a dam was formed by the creek, and water pumped up from there. Dr. Bailey used the place as a holiday house, but did not live there. He converted the old coach stable into a garage by adding side walls, but otherwise the buildings were little changed, and became overhung with trees. The garden, once cared for, went back to nature. Susan and Tom Pitman purchased the property in 1981, with a view to restoring it. They found walls of rough sawn boards, originally covered with hessian, which had later been covered with caneite. In places there were traces of old wallpaper, and in the passage a stencilled border made by Mrs. Osborn. Tidying the garden and restoring the house were well advanced when the bushfire destroyed it all beyond the possibility of repair. When rebuilding, a site was chosen further from the road, and the style of construction was modern, mud brick and pine., Harold James Matheson Osborn50 |

Village Bell* | Dec 2008 | Historic Salisbury House (Kincraik) 120th anniversary In 1888 the South Bourke and Mornington Journal reported that “the well known carrier Mr George Craik was building a 32-roomed guest house in Upper Beaconsfield”. In August that year, a second report confirmed that Craik’s elegant new building, which he named “Kincraik”, was well on its way to completion. The builder, who also built the Hall, was David Seymour McCulloch. Whilst working in Upper Beaconsfield McCulloch fell in love with Janet, Craik’s very attractive eldest daughter. They married at Christ Church Berwick in August 1890, the wedding reception being held at Kincraik. Kincraik was no ordinary guesthouse. Beautifully sited with extensive views to the south, it was very comfortable and could accommodate 60 people. It boasted a tennis court, a croquet lawn, full sized billiard table with glassed lantern roof — still present, good stabling — very important before the arrival of the motor car, and the surrounding bushland made it a desirable place to stay. In 1890 Craik was honoured for his considerable contributions to the community by having Craik Road named after him. Kincraik was the second large guesthouse to be built in Upper Beaconsfield. The first, “Beaconsfield House”, was built by William Brisbane in 1877. George Crabtree Craik, known as “Geordie”, was born in Forfar, Scotland. He was aged 11 when he arrived in Port Phillip Bay aboard S. S. Charles with his parents and siblings in 1853. Soon after arriving, the family decided to live in Berwick. Having finished his schooling, Geordie became a labourer, then a railway repairer, a rather tedious task for this ambitious, and able young man. In 1868 Geordie married Emma Annie Maria Lundy of Portsmouth, England, whom he met in Australia. The couple eventually had six children. In 1869 “Geordie” achieved local fame when he and twelve other men organised a very successful kangaroo hunt on Miller’s Flat in Haunted Gully for Queen Victoria’s second son Prince Alfred, Duke of Edinburgh. Whilst the Prince was on holidays he stayed at Bowman’s Inn in Beaconsfield. In the early 1870s Geordie bought a horse and dray fulfilling his next ambition, to become a local carter. Before the arrival of the motor car, carrying was a very important, quite lucrative and respected occupation. All goods, building materials, human and stock food, liquids, produce, animals and humans had to be moved by horses, the only source of power for transport. In 1876 Geordie selected 45 acres of land, opposite present day Montuna Golf Course, where he built a family home. As her family grew up, Emma, finding she had some free time, began inviting paying guests to stay with them at weekends and holidays, an additional source of income. The house had a pleasant outlook across the valley. Mrs Craik proved to be an excellent hostess and her home soon became a popular guest house. Geordie, now realising guesthouses were a very sound commercial proposition, bought 31 acres of Commins ridge top land. Mortgaging the property enabled Geordie to obtain sufficient finance from the Southern Insurance Company to build Kincraik, and also a small general store on the corner of present day McBride and Salisbury Roads. The store opened 1891, but was destroyed by fire in 1918. Kincraik was an instant success, and remained so until the onset of the great depression of the 1890s. Soon after the family moved to Kincraik, their old guesthouse was rented, then a few years later became a government “temporary inebriate retreat”. The locals called the area “Nibs Hill”. In 1893, many banks including the Commercial Bank in Berwick failed, as did many land companies. Guest house visitors were few, Geordie was unable to cope with the mortgage payments, and sadly by the end of 1895 Kincraik was taken over by the Southern Insurance Company. Mrs Craik returned to Portsmouth to care for her dying mother, and did not return to Australia.9 |
(Mentioned) History | At Inebriates Asylum, Beaconsfield, VIC, Australia, The Inebriates Asylum at Beaconsfield On September 30, 1889 the Governor in Council ordered that the buildings and premises situate at Beaconsfield and hitherto known as Craik’s Boarding House shall be an Asylum for Inebriates. Thomas Elmes was appointed the Superintendent of the Asylum on October 1, 1889. On November 4, 1889 the Governor in Council ordered that The buildings and premises belonging to Mrs M. H. Blair, situate at Beaconsfield, and known as Walnut Gove, shall be an Asylum for Inebriates, to be used for the care and treatment of female patients only. Inebriates were defined as a person who habitually used alcoholic liquors and could be committed to an Inebriate Asylum for detention and curative treatment for up to three months. Inebriate Asylums were established in 1888, previously inebriates were committed to the Lunatic Asylum. Beaconsfield was the first Asylum to be established, and one was also established at Northcote in 1890. The Victoria Government Gazette of December 20, 1899 lists the Regulations for the Management, Supervision and Regulation of Asylums for Inebriates. The Regulations covered the amount of food allowed to each inmate; intoxicating liquor was banned; inmates were banned from having money or stamps and all letters were opened before being handed to inmates. Regulations also covered what to do if an inmate became insane (they were sent to a Lunatic Asylum) or died (a letter was sent to the local Coroner and to the ‘person who shall have made the last payment on account of such patient). The Fees were also set out - £2 per week for patients on the ‘lower scale’ and £5 per week for those on the ‘higher scale” On May 15, 1891, the Victoria Government Gazette reported that Thomas Bissell, a patient was missing. The Argus of July 21, of the same year, reports that his skeleton was found in the Gembrook ranges, about 12 miles from the Asylum. On January, 6 1892 The Argus reported that an inmate, Francis Key had committed suicide, by shooting himself, after being admitted to the Asylum suffering from alcoholism and in weak state. Apparently his wife was aware that he had a gun in his room, and she wrote to the Asylum expressing her concern and telling them of her husband’s suicidal tendency. In spite of this it appears the gun remained in his room and as the Inquest noted ‘sufficient precaution was not exercised by the Officials’. Both Beaconsfield and Northcote were closed in 1892, Beaconsfield in September 1892 (see news report below) Another report in The Argus of September 4, 1894 says that the Asylum buildings were destroyed by fire. The owner, Mr Craik of Kincraik Boarding House, had the buildings insured for £700. The Asylum gave its name to the surrounding area and even as late as 1925 a report in The Argus called the area Inebriates Hill. It is now known as Guys Hill.10 |
