Alan Elmy Knapton enlisted towards the end of the war on 3 Dec 1917, when he was 19 years old and worked as a compositor. He embarked from Sydney on 30 Apr 1918 on the SS Port Darwin for Suez. He was part of the 8th Light Horse Regiment, and returned to Australia on 3 July 1919. He was a Private. SERN 4649.
His family were long time residents of Upper Beaconsfield and Alan's name is listed on the Honour Board at the Upper Beaconsfield RSL.1,2

  • 20 Sep 1899: POLICE NEWS. BERWICK POLICE COURT. WEDNESDAY, SEPT. 13. Before Messrs. J. Wilson, W. Fuller, and A. S. Robertson, J's.P.
    Martin Olsen, a foreigner, was charged with having broken into the house of George Christie on the 2nd inst., and stolen a tent and a pruning scissors, of the value of 10/. George Christie stated that he left his house at Upper Beaconsfield on the date mentioned at 7.15 a.m., securely locking the door. When he returned, between 10 and 11 the same evening, he found one of the windows broken in, and the articles mentioned missing; the tent produced was his ; he knew it by the patchwork, ropes, and string upon it ; he had had it in his possession for seven years; the scissors were on his table when he left home ; they belonged to a man named Lewis, who lent them to another person, and they were left with him until the owner called for them : he found a peculiar button on the floor of his house, which he handed to Constable Steele.
    John George Lewis, of Upper Beaconsfield, organbuilder, identified the scissors as his property; he identified them by a peculiarity in the manufacture of the blades, and valued them at 5/ or 6/.
    Henri Ernest Martin, contractor, Beaconsfield, said that the prisoner called at his place at 10.20 a.m. on the the 2nd, and asked for work : he came to witness from the eastern end of the paddock and left again by the western : at that time prisoner was carrying nothing but a walking stick ; at 4.30 on the same day he saw the prisoner carrying a bundle which looked like calico tied up loosely or a tent ; prisoner was about 100 yards away at that time; prisoner told him that he had been working at Backhouse's place. Alfred Schlipalius stated that he saw prisoner near his father's place at about 2 o'clock on the 2nd; he was then going towards Christie's place, and was not carrying a swag; he saw no one else travelling on the road.
    Terence Kirwin, laborer, saw prisoner about noon on the 2nd inst; witness offered him a couple of day's work, but it was not accepted; asked prisoner where his swag was, and be replied that he did not have one; went with prisoner to Sykes' Hotel to have a drink, and returned to cricket ground, where prisoner asked for 1/ which was given him; witness noticed particularly the coat which prisoner was wearing and the buttons upon it; they had a peculiar fastening; the button produced by Christie was very similar to those on prisoner coat ; he never saw buttons like them before.
    Constable Steele, of Berwick, said that he had examined Christie's place, and found that the kitchen window which had six panes of glass in it had had five of the number broken; one of the crossbars was also broken; it must have been broken from the outside ; the hole made was large enough to admit a man; saw the prisoner in a paddock at Gembrook where he was working, and asked him where he was on the 2nd inst, and he replied "down the road at Beaconsfeld;" searched prisoner's camp and found the tent produced by Christie; asked where he got the tent, prisoner said he bought it from a Frenchman but he had no receipt; he then arrested prisoner ; on the way to the watchhouse, whilst crossing Stony Creek bridge, prisoner said that that was the place where he bought the tent from the Frenchman; on the 5th inst. Christie gave him a button; he compared it with those on prisoner's coat, and found that it was identical with them; there were three buttons missing from prisoner's coat.
    John Tyler also gave evidence that he saw the prisoner at Beaconsfield between 3 and 4 o'clock on the date mentioned, carrying a bundle which looked like a tent; prisoner dropped the bundle and came on and had a conversation with him about work.
    Prisoner was committed for trial.

  • 7 Nov 1956: Dewhurst Progress Secretary Resigns After 27 Years Service - The Man They Honored
    At the last annual meeting of the Dewhurst Progress Association Mr. J. George Lewis resigned his position as secretary—an office he has held continuously since the formation of the Association 27 years ago.
    Mr Lewis is now over eighty years of age, is still an active man and enjoys very good health.
    His kindly manner and sincerity has made him many friends in the district.
    Some years ago a wallet of notes was presented to him by the members as an act of appreciation for his services to the Association.
    At the next quarterly meeting Mr Lewis will receive a present from the members as a further token of their esteem.
    Mr Lewis has also been made a Life Member of the Association.
    Office-bearers elected for the ensuing year were: President E. C. Holt; Vice President, Mrs Wilson, W. Wade; Secretary-Treasurer, G. A. Beattie.
    The above picture of mr Lewis was taken 56 years ago when he first came to live in the Upper Beaconsfield district — before Dewhurst had its name.37

Note* In 1894, Charles LADD, engraver, obtained a lease for a 59 acre Agricultural Allotment under Section 44 of the Land Act 1891. It was in two parts, allotment 48C and Section 3E of E, Parish of Gembrook. In the 1899-1900 rate book he is registered as a farmer, but returns to engraving in 1902.
An instruction from the Crown Land Department dated 16 June 1909 endorsed the lease as having matured into a Freehold Estate on 28 June 1909.
In 1928 Charles' son, farmer, acquired Allotment 3F of 40 acres next to his father.
Ladd Road & Ladd Square carry the family name.1

Place in Upper Beac* Ladd Road / Ladd Square. Ladd Road, or Ladd's Road was named after early settler Charles Henry Salter Ladd and his family. A newspaper article on 26 Nov 1958 reports that Cr Claud Harris reverted the road name to an earlier name 'Stockyard Hill Road'. The residents who lived on the road were quite upset and petitioned council to revert the name to Ladd's Road. They were unsuccessful at that time. It appears that by Aug 1959 the road was again known as Ladd's Road.
Originally this road would have been extending to Ladd's property, but after the building of Cardinia Reservoir, the roads are only on the eastern side of Beaconsfield-Emerald Road.

Land-Note23 May 1893 In his declaration of improvements on 23 May 1893 C H S Ladd stated that he had erected 47 chains of post and wire fencing at 15/- per chain (£56.5.), that he had built a 18x11 ft hut, weatherboard and iron, value £40; and a building in course of erection which will cost £150, current value £100. He had also cleared 7 (or 2?) acres value £9.8

Land-Note10 Sep 1894 In the next declaration on 10 Sep 1894 C H S Ladd stated that Mr F Holyoak, M Ladd and his own were enclosed as one block. On his own block he had 66 chains of fencing valued at £47.17; he had repaired the fence adjoining Lyne (18 chains at 1/6, value £1.7.) He had arranged with his adjoining occupiers Messrs Holyoak, Webb, Ladd, Lyne, Sanderson and Miss Seeley, and had received £15 for it.
By now he had finished his weatherboard cottage with iron roof and 2 brick chimneys, which he valued at £150. It contained 4 rooms and a passage. The rooms measured 15ft 6 x 15ft 6; 14ft x 11ft; 13ft x 11ft; 11ft x 10ft 6; and the passage 14ft x 4ft. The outside materials were WB and a galv iron roof, inside there was tongue and groove lining and canvas and paper.
He declared that he was a farmer and photographer, and that he was residing on his selection with his family. He also reiterated that as yet there were no dividing fences between Mr Holyoak, M Ladd and his selection.8 
Land-Note25 Sep 1894 I, Charles Henry Salter Ladd of Upper Beaconsfield in the Colony of Victoria, do solemnly and sincerely declare that since the third day of May 1893 I have resided continuously on the selection held by me in Upper Beaconsfield in the parish of Gembrook. I have frequently spent from a few days to a fortnight on the land since I have held it but I could not be certain about dates, having selected as a non-resident I did not know I should be asked for dates referring to the different periods I have resided on it.
The iron tanks are connected to the house and are fixtures.
I have had sickness in the house, have the doctor's account to settle £6.6. and at present cannot get work, if you would kindly give me time to pay my last rent £3 I would be greatly obliged.

Work is scarce and I find it difficult to live from week to week with the money I earn, however, I hope to forward £1 during this week and another within a week or two. I can assure you I am as anxious to pay this rent and be done with it as the Government are to receive it.

On 9 Nov 1895 Mounted Constable R Roberts, in the role as Crown lands bailiff, was sent to inspect the property and report on the improvements. Apart from the fencing previously reported he stated that there was an acre of oats growing. The buildings were described as a four-roomed house 28 x 20 (softwood and iron roof and tw brick chimneys valued £120) and a fowl house and barn 20 x 12 (slabs and iron roof valued £14). There were 10 chains of posts only erected around a small paddock and holes had been bored for wire value £3.10.0. Total value of improvements were £181.2.0.8 
Land-Note12 Feb 1896 C H S Ladd saw the secretary and decided to allow the licence to remain as at present. He would pay the £2 owing at once. By 7 Mar 1896 the Lands Dept still had not received the money.8

Dr L. L. Smith. Dear Sir, In July 1888 I selected (under the Non-Residence section of the Land Act) the sixty acres of land on which I am now living and until three years ago I kept my rent paid, since then I am sorry to say what work I have had has not been sufficient to keep the storekepeper paid.
I have been living here since the end of March 1893, between 1888 and 1893 I resided at least six months on the land. I have now I think £2 rent and the fee to pay before I can get my lease a... (holding the land as I do under the Non-Resident section I have £8? .. rent to pay before I can call it my own.
The bailiff's valuation £181 odd for my improvements is not as much as I have spent on the land, but taking his estimate and adding the £84 rent makes a total of £265 for 60 acres of poor land.
What I would like if it be possible is to have the selection brought under the residence Section and dated 1891 instead of 1888, the time I have resided on the ground would then I think be sufficient and it would save me half the rent that I would have to pay otherwise.
I have been told that under the previous Secretary for Lands a Selector had this favour that I am now asking granted I give names, there may be possibly some note of it.
I was at the Lands (Dept) and saw Mr Morkham last month and I think if he knew of a similar case as a precedent I might have a better chance.

The Lands Department refused his request and on 29 Jun 1896 there was a note that his licence had expired and that he had to pay his arrears within 21 days. It appears that he managed to pay some, as a note on 4 Aug 1896 states that there were now 12 rents paid up.8

Land-Note16 Oct 1896 In an application for lease or crown grant C H S Ladd had to declare his improvements again. They were the same as in previous years except that the orchard was now enclosed with paling fence and outhouses valued at £16.10.0. He also stated that he had paid £36, being all fees due on the said licence. This, however, covers only the time up to 1 Jul 1894.
The Non-Residence licence was converted to a new lease for 14 years was finally approved on 30 Nov 1896. The half yearly rent was £3, including the fees the total due now was £17.8

Land was sold last week, two miles nearer the station than mine, with road frontage and fenced at thirty shillings an acre and mine has cost me already over £4.
I have a job now cutting ferns at 1/6 an acre, what can one save out of that pay with a wife and five children to look after?
If I could get my lease I would try and sell so that i could pay the Governmment what I owe them and then find a home elsewhere.

Land-Note*2 Dec 1913 William Duncan Henderson To the Secretary for Lands. Dear Sir, I have allotment 3E Parish Gembrook Shire Berwick, for which I have been paying rates for upwards of 30 years. There is no practicable road out at present. The plan of that parish shows a surveyed road but it has never been opened as there is about 12 chain of swamp to negotiate and in other places there is a grade of at least 1 in 6.
I have written to the Shire Council many times during the last 10 or 12 years but nothing has been done. By following the surveyed road part of the way and then making a deviation through adjoining block/Henderson's Allotment 48D) it would make a road accessable to the Emerald Railway Station and if taken through my land and that of my son H. M. Ladd it would make a through road from the Beaconsfield and Gembrook road to the Emerald road which I venture to say would be a convenience to the residents and a benefit to the district generally.
At present I am absolutely shut in without a road of any sort, and I would like you to do what you could for yours respectfully C.H.S. Ladd.14

I am not particular where the road is made so long as it gives me a way in to my place. I have marked on the accompanying plan what I consider the easiest and least expensive route to take, at present I have positively no way in or out except through my adjoining neighbours properites. The existing road provision along the north of allots 142P, 3D, 3E, and 3F is quite impracticable, the road itself has never been used and is enclosed with the adjoining blocks.
A cross-country connection would no doubt be very useful but to be of any service it would require to be taken through freehold blocks 3D, 3E, a good deal to the south of the exixting survey as indicated by red dotted lines on attached litho plan. This is rendered necessary by an extensive swamp on that portion of the road between allots 3D and 48D, and the uneven character of the country further east which is broken by gullies crossing the road along allots 3E and 3F.
Allot 3E is owned by Mr Ladd who has a home on it and as he has everything to gain by a deviation of the present road he would not offer any objection to the opening of a new one through his property as the distance to Emerald R.S. would be shortened to some extent.
I am however informed that Mr Henderson who holds allot 48D, the lease of which is due and ready for execution but is being withheld on account of this application, is the owner of allot 3D and I understand that he does not view with favour the proposal to deviate the road even through allot 48D. It may therefore be a difficult matter to obtain his consent to allow the road to be taken through his freehold land. Before anything further can be done by this Dept. regarding the survey, the Shire Council will require to make arrangements to acquire the necessary land out of the freehold blocks. Provision can however be made for a road through allot 48D leaving the question of the continuation through allots 3D and 3E to be settled by the Shire Council and the parties interested; allot 3F being held under licence by a son of the applicant there will be no difficulty in establishing a through connection if Henderson can be induced to his portion.
The road itself even when selected in the best possible position will only be a cross country connection suitable for light traffic but I think the Dept is bound to make the best provision that circumstances permit and on that account I recommend that the survey through allot 48D be carried out at once.
It will be seen by reference to the plan that the deviation through this allot runs for some distance close to an existing road; which is alos formed and used constantly for traffic. The configuration of the country renders this unavoidable.
With this deviation effected the road north of allot 142P could be closed. P Campbell.14

  • 28 Apr 1890: PROPOSED RAILWAY FROM DANDENONG TO GEMBROOK AND BEENAK. The adjourned meetting of the Emerald Railway League was held at the Victoria hotel, Bourke street, on Thursday last. There was a very large attendance, representatives from Dandenong, Lysterfield, Narree Warren, Beaconsfield, Gembrook, &c., being present. In the absence of Colonel Hutton Mr. S. Strettle was appointed chairman. Mr. Bradshaw was called on to explain the object of the meeting, and said the cause of their being assembled was owing to the fact that a number of new lines of railway in the Narree Warren and Gembrook districts were being advocated by interested persons, and were being prominiently brought under the notice of the Minister of Railways. They would be asked that day to express a decided opinion in favor of any one line. After a good deal of discussion Mr. J. Winter moved and Mr. W. Moysey seconded a resolution to the effect that the meeting support the line of railway as surveyed from Dandenong via Narree Warren to Emerald and Gembrook, as being the cheapest to construct and accommodating the greatest number of people. This was carried by a very large majority, although an amendment was moved by Messrs. Nixon and Schlipalius in favor of the Glen Iris extension, and a further amendment by Messrs. Brisbane and Ladd, advocating the old survey from Beaconsfield railway station, both of which were lost. Messrs. Strettle and Bradshaw undertook to lay the views of the league before the Minister at an early date. The meeting then closed. William Brisbane42

  • 28 Jan 1904: An interesting exhibit, bearing on the question, "Do snakes swallow their young?" was brought to Melbourne on Tuesday by Mr C. Ladd, of Flinders-lane. It was a copperhead snake, about 4ft. long, killed at Upper Beaconsfield while in the act of swallowing another snake of the same species about 18in. long. When placed in a box to bring to Melbourne the tail of the victim was still wriggling in a lively way outside the other snake's mouth. Yet when withdrawn from the other snake yesterday the head and some of the body were partly digested."44

World War I

Edward Wildes Holyoak (Ted) Ladd enlisted on 9 Nov 1914 when he was working as an engraver aged 25. SERN 5094.
He was assigned to the 3rd Light Horse Brigade Train and embarked from Melbourne on 2 Feb 1915 on board HMAT A51 Chilka.
He was promoted to Sergeant and served with the 12th Field Artillery Brigade. He was killed in action on 7 Apr 1917.
His name is listed on the Upper Beaconsfield War Memorial and on the Honour Board at the Upper Beaconsfield RSL. He is also commemorated at the Emerald RSL.1

Village Bell*2005 Sergeant Edward Wildes Ladd died 7/4/1917, in France at Pozières, age 25. Australian Field Artillery, 12th Brigade. Son of Emily Ladd, and worked as an Engraver. He embarked on the HMAT Chilka, ship A51, on 2/2/1915 from Melbourne. His brother Harry Matthew Ladd also served and survived the War.5

World War I

Harry Matthew Ladd enlisted on 25 Dec 1916. He was a labourer and 25 years old. SERN 320. He was assigned to the 37th Battalion A Company and his unit embarked from Melbourne on 3 Jun 1916 on board HMAT A34 Persic.
He was wounded in 1917. He was promoted to Corporal in the 12th Field Artillery Brigade. He returned to Australia on 19 Feb 1919. He was awarded a Military Medal (Comm Gaz. No. 219 20 Dec 1917)
He is listed on the Honour Board at the Upper Beaconsfield RSL.
His older brother was killed at Pozières.1

I reside with my parents at Upper Beaconsfield. 1st application for any land. I have never selected nor do I own any land. Land applied for adjoins my parents' freehold. Parents own about 60 acres. No other land in the family. The only improvements consist of fencing which is dilapidated and of no use or value to an incoming selector. Will pay survey fee. I will fence and use land for orchard purposes. Will comply with residence condition. Father will assist me with means. No objectors. There is a hut built about 30 years ago which is of no value except a little bit for the iron on the roof. Land board - recommended subject to payments of valuation for improvements.7

I do not reside on the above mentioned allotment as since I returned from Active Service over sea I have been in Melbourne.
I am on it once a fortnight as I go to my people's place adjoining it. When I received your previous communication concerning it I understood that it was necessary for me to make fresh application for the Block and would have to attend a Land Board.
I am unable to do so as I could not get away. When I selected the land I erected a good fence on 3 sides (the fourth was already fenced) and cleared about 4 or 5 acres. 1 1/2 acres of which I planted with apple trees. In Feb 1916 I enlisted and a little later went on active service overseas and did not return till last year. I would like to retain the land if I can do so without having to reside on it. if I am not asking too much of you would you kindly let me know if I can do so and if so what money I owe on the land &c.
This district is well suited for fruit growing but the state of the roads is a big drawback to the residents. If we had a few live men on the Berwick Shire Council if would help matters considerably,

If you will kindly do so, I would like you to let me know if it is possible for me to pay this by instalments instead of within 30 days as stated in your letter. My reason for asking this concession is this. I have just started in business for myself (Pawnbroker & Jeweller) and have put all my own money and about £350 borrowed money into it. As nearly all this is in stock, I have very little to work on.
I am paying a big rent for a small shop £2-15-0 per week for 2nd or 3rd years. I have stated this that you may see for yourself that I have a genuine reason for asking this concession. If you would kindly advise me if this can be arranged I will deem it a great favour. Yours sincerely, Harry M Ladd"
17 Nov 1921. Sir, In reply to your letter of 11th inst. relative to Allotment 3F, Section E, Parish of Gembrook, I have to inform you that the balance of the purchase money cannot be accepted in instalments, but you may if you so desire obtain a lease for the balance of the term instead of a crown grant. Rent paid under the lease would be credited towards the purchase money and the Crown Grant could be obtained at any time on payment of the balance of the purchase money and fees. H. O. It would have been a very great help to me if the same could have been done again this year.
Will you kindly let me know how long the arrears have been owing, if there are any further arrears and also how much is now owing on the land.

World War I

George Charles Robert Shanks enlisted on 27 Dec 1915 when he was 21 years old and working on his parents' orchard at Dewhurst. SERN 5091. He was with the 22nd Battalion, 13th Reinforcement and embarked on from Melbourne on 3 Jul 1916 on board HMAT A33 Ayrshire. He was killed at Bullecourt on 3 May 1917, and has no known grave.
His name is listed on the Upper Beaconsfield War Memorial and on the Honour Board at the Upper Beaconsfield RSL.
He is also commemorated at the Emerald RSL.1,2

Note*1917 Reginald Corder. Reginald wrote a letter to his aunt in Upper Beaconsfield re the missing George Shanks, asking her to give his sympathies to George's mother.
"France, 21st June 1917.
Since I have been back I have been trying to find out what I could about George Shanks. As I suppose you know he has been reported "Missing", and I am afraid there is very little hope, though it is just faintly possible that he has been made prisoner.
As you know he was in my platoon, and he was one of the best men we had. He was singled out for early promotion, and had he got through this stunt would certainly have been now carrying stripes. George's Section Commander was wounded just as the attack commenced, and George took charge of the Machine-Gun, as was of course, his duty, and he was last seen leading his section through the heavy fire towards the enemy lines.
If he is dead, he died doing his job, which I suppose is the best that can be said of any man.
Our platoon altogether was knocked about pretty severely, but I feel the loss of George Shanks more than any of the others.
I would like you, if you would, to let Mrs Shanks know what a very high opinion we all had of her son, and what a splendid soldier he was, and convey to her my personal sympathy with her in her loss."4

  • 7 Sep 1904: The residents of North Beaconsfield opened their newly erected Mission Hall on Sunday. There was a good congregation present. The service was conducted by the Rev. James Wilson and Mr. Hewison. Mr Wilson preached the sermon, taking for his text—Levit 19 part of the 30th verse—"Reverence my sanctuary;" he gave a most eloquent address and impressed upon his congregation, especially the younger portion, the necessity of due reverence to God's sanctuary, and particuiarly the building they were opening for divine worship that day. Mr Hewison gave a short address after Mr. Wilson's sermon. The building, which has been erected by the residents on a piece of land donated by Mr. Shanks, is practically free from debt; the committee worked matters in such a way that when the building was ready for opening everything had been paid for. It still requires some little internal fitting, and the committee are hopeful of being able to have it completely finished in a few months at most. Rev James Wilson39

  • 7 Mar 2012: Town icon is 100 - DEWHURST'S leading lady will celebrate her 100th birthday this Friday.
    Frances Bishop, who resides at the View Hills Manor in Endeavour Hills, is celebrating her special day with a party at the retirement village.
    Her son-in-law Alex Burgess says Frances is a particularly well-known woman for her part in naming the town of Dewhurst between Beaconsfield Upper and Emerald.
    “Frances was involved in the original selection of the name,” Alex said.
    “At the progress meeting they gave her the casting vote,” he said.
    In 1923, the town was still known as North Beaconsfield. Suggestions for the new name included Keepas, Aerial and Dewhurst.
    Residents formed a progress association to help shape the identity of the town and to decide on a name that didn't sound like a Beaconsfield appendage.
    Residents had cast an equal number of votes for the town to be named Keepas or Dewhurst.
    The chairman of the meeting, Mr Wayne, asked 12-year-old Frances to make the choice. “She chose Dewhurst,” Alex said.
    Frances married her neighbour Alex Bishop some years later and they moved to Berwick.
    Most of the original district is covered by the Cardinia Dam, but Dewhurst's leading lady is still an impressive homeage to the town.20
