William Kenworthy (Bill) Lorimer enlisted on 1 Dec 1914 when he was a 20 year odl farmer. SERN 1568. He was a Private with the 5th Battalion, 3rd Reinforcement, and his unit embarked from Melbourne on 19 Feb 1915 on board HMAT A54 Runic. The man who planted the late Ted Hamilton's orchard was Mr. R. H. BUNT, not HUNT as stated. He did it at weekends after putting in a 48 hour week at Toomuc Valley orchard, then owned by one of the Kitchen Brothers, of whom there were three.
Between them they held a chain of properties from Toomuc Valley to Berglund Road. One planted the orchard (280 acres originally), another who loved the bush untouched built "Caversham Heights" and the third built "The Towers" and established the marvellous garden which used to surround it. They also made soap.
One of the Bunt's daughters married E. W. (Bill) Harris who lived in "Gwenelg" later owned by the late Don Sutherland and worked the orchard which was there. Another married Bill Lorimer who had an orchard, in Leppitt's Road. I think their son still lives there.10

Harold Michael Mervyn Horan had been with the 29th Australian Light Horse before he enlisted on 5 Feb 1916. He was promoted to Lieutenant straight away and embarked with the 8th Light Horse, 15th Reinforcement from Melbourne on 7 Apr 1916 on board HMAT A43 Barunga. He was promoted to temporary Captain on 12 Jun 1917 and returned to Australia on 15 Jun 1919. He continued serving in the army until 10 Jul 1945.
He is listed on the Honour Board at the Upper Beaconsfield RSL.1

    A picturesque military wedding was celebrated on Saturday, November 20, at St. Philip's Church of England, Hoddle-street, Abbotsford, when Lieut. Harold M. M. Horan, eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Horan, of Abbotsford, was united to Miss Violet C. Berglund, only daughter of Mr. C. A. Berglund, J.P., and Mrs. Berglund, of Collingwood and Upper Beaconsfield. The church was decorated for the occasion and the Rev. H. B. Hewitt officiated. There was a fully choral service. The choir preceded the bridal party from the church, and during the signing of the register Miss Taylor rendered a solo.
    The bride, who was given away by her father, wore a gown of ivory crepe de chine, the bodice being of Limerick lace. The long court train hung from the shoulders and was finished with true lovers' knots, sprays of tulle roses and a horseshoe. The veil of Limerick lace was the gift of Miss E. Mitchener, friend of the bride. A sheaf of Madonna lilies, orange blossom and asparagus fern tied with tulle streamers was carried, which, with a gold pendant locket, were the gifts of the bridegroom. The bride's present to the. bridegroom was a travelling bag.
    Miss M. Horan (sister of bridegroom), Miss May Ireson and Miss Nellie Geraghty were the bridesmaids, and wore dainty white voile frocks with collars of shell-pink ninon and head-dresses of pink chiffon aeroplane bows. Master Hector Bennett acted as page and wore a white satin suit and large satin hat with lancer plume. Miss Elsie Falletta (cousin of bride), in a quaint long satin frock and bonnet of satin finished with plume, was trainbearer, and little Violet Beisley carried the satin cushion on which the bride knelt. Each maid carried a posy of pale pink Cecil Brunner roses, carnations and asparagus fern, tied with satin streamers. To the first and second maids the bridegroom gave silver bags, and to the third maid a gold bar brooch set with aquamarines; to the page gold sleeve-links, and the two little girls gold brooches. On leaving the church the bride was handed several horseshoes. The bridegroom was attended by Mr. George Clawes (his cousin) as best man, and the groomsmen were Mr. W. A. Berglund (brother of bride) and Mr. P. Horan (brother of bridegroom).
    A reception and wedding breakfast followed in the Collingwood Town Hall, which was decorated with pink and white blooms, the bride's table ... white. ... usual toast were honored ... for the bride's brother who has left for the front, was proposed by Mr. Harvey Smith of Upper Beaconsfield. The honeymoon was spent at meyer's Fall and Marysville. The bride travelled in navy blue with hat in ..., the bride's mother wore blue crepe the chine, the bodice draped with ninon and ... silk ... hat to match with full lancer ....   • 1 Feb 1947: STRANDED AND FAR FROM HOME, BUT 5-YEAR-OLD KEEPS CALM. Five-year-old Christopher Glur, recently acquired and much-travelled South African immigrant, was the only one who remained completely calm when the Taroona sailed for Tasmania without him last night.
    Found standing on the wharf watching the Taroona depart, he blaridly explained to perturbed by-standers that he should have been on the ship with his aunts, but he had gone ashore to look after the luggage and the ship had sailed without him. He was taken hurriedly to Victoria Dock police station, where the police gradually extracted his story.
    Christopher had come to Australia from Johannesburg on the Nestor "not very long ago." He had arrived in Melbourne yesterday morning from Sydney, and had slept on the train. When the train reached Melbourne he had gone straight to the Taroona with his two aunts-Aunt Edith (he didn't know her other name) and Aunt Dorothy Schultz.
    He had left the ship with Aunt Dorothy to look for the luggage. His aunt told him to watch for it while she checked at the office. Then the Taroona had sailed. Meanwhile D24 had received a cable message from the Taroona asking that the child be given to Mr Harold Horan, of Kent st, Kew, to mind. A mobile patrol was sent to the dock to collect Christopher and take him to Russell st, pending Mr Horan's arrival.
    So Christopher went to the city watchhouse and spent an hour explaining the mysteries of the Afrikaans language to the matron and two constables on duty at the desk. Mr Horan arrived completely mystified. He had never heard of Christopher. However, he did have a vague recollection of his wife, at present away on holidays, saying that she was expecting some relatives to arrive from South Africa. So into Mr Horan's care the police sent Christopher, the boy, quite happy and Mr Horan still very mystified.11

    A picturesque military wedding was celebrated on Saturday, November 20, at St. Philip's Church of England, Hoddle-street, Abbotsford, when Lieut. Harold M. M. Horan, eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Horan, of Abbotsford, was united to Miss Violet C. Berglund, only daughter of Mr. C. A. Berglund, J.P., and Mrs. Berglund, of Collingwood and Upper Beaconsfield. The church was decorated for the occasion and the Rev. H. B. Hewitt officiated. There was a fully choral service. The choir preceded the bridal party from the church, and during the signing of the register Miss Taylor rendered a solo.
    The bride, who was given away by her father, wore a gown of ivory crepe de chine, the bodice being of Limerick lace. The long court train hung from the shoulders and was finished with true lovers' knots, sprays of tulle roses and a horseshoe. The veil of Limerick lace was the gift of Miss E. Mitchener, friend of the bride. A sheaf of Madonna lilies, orange blossom and asparagus fern tied with tulle streamers was carried, which, with a gold pendant locket, were the gifts of the bridegroom. The bride's present to the. bridegroom was a travelling bag.
    Miss M. Horan (sister of bridegroom), Miss May Ireson and Miss Nellie Geraghty were the bridesmaids, and wore dainty white voile frocks with collars of shell-pink ninon and head-dresses of pink chiffon aeroplane bows. Master Hector Bennett acted as page and wore a white satin suit and large satin hat with lancer plume. Miss Elsie Falletta (cousin of bride), in a quaint long satin frock and bonnet of satin finished with plume, was trainbearer, and little Violet Beisley carried the satin cushion on which the bride knelt. Each maid carried a posy of pale pink Cecil Brunner roses, carnations and asparagus fern, tied with satin streamers. To the first and second maids the bridegroom gave silver bags, and to the third maid a gold bar brooch set with aquamarines; to the page gold sleeve-links, and the two little girls gold brooches. On leaving the church the bride was handed several horseshoes. The bridegroom was attended by Mr. George Clawes (his cousin) as best man, and the groomsmen were Mr. W. A. Berglund (brother of bride) and Mr. P. Horan (brother of bridegroom).
    A reception and wedding breakfast followed in the Collingwood Town Hall, which was decorated with pink and white blooms, the bride's table ... white. ... usual toast were honored ... for the bride's brother who has left for the front, was proposed by Mr. Harvey Smith of Upper Beaconsfield. The honeymoon was spent at meyer's Fall and Marysville. The bride travelled in navy blue with hat in ..., the bride's mother wore blue crepe the chine, the bodice draped with ninon and ... silk ... hat to match with full lancer .... Murchison, Wednesday -While driving along the Shepparton road, near Murchison, this afternoon Councillor C A Berglund, of the Collingwood City Council, who was accompanied by his wife and married daughter, Mrs Horan, of Kent street, Kew lost control of his car in the loose metal on the side of the road and the vehicle went over the embankment and overturned.   • 29 Dec 1909: BEACONSFIELD. Mr. C. A. Berglund, who has a holding of 200 acres here, which he is converting into an orchard, has left the civil service after an experience of 22 years, and has accepted an important position in the Melbourne Total Abstinence Society. Out of 122 applicants Mr. Berglund was selected to manage the book depot and lantern department, and takes up his duties at the beginning of the year. He was elected a member of the executive committee of the Melbourne Total Abstinence Society in 1906, and vice-president in 1909, resigning that position to become an applicant for the secretaryship and secured the position at the December meeting the same year. Mr. Berglund takes keen interest in Friendly Society matters, and is a Past District Chief Ranger of the Foresters.42

  • 23 Oct 1913: Mr C.A. Berglund, J.P., who is secretary of the Melbourne Total Abstinence Society, has on account of his health, been on extended leave of absence, most of which he has been spending at his home (View House) at Upper Beaconsfield. He has been greatly benefited by the holiday in the Ranges and has now resumed duty in the City.44
  • 6 May 1915: Police against Berglund, and Police against Lalor.—Informations for using fire at Upper Beaconsfield contrary to the provisions of the Police Offences Act.
    Sergeant Parkin prosecuted for the Police and Mr Macpherson appeared for both defendants.
    As a preliminary objection, Mr Macpherson asked the Bench to say that no offence appeared on the proceedings. He pointed out that the defendant were responsible people, landowners and their manager, and as the penalty of Section 8 of the Act was a very severe one, being a fine of £100 or imprisonment for six months, it was a matter of the greatest importance to have the alleged offence clearly and explicitly defined. This was not done in the form in which it appeared before the Court.
    Mr Harris agreed with the contention of counsel, and said it was clear that the information should be amended. He would amend the information and grant an adjournment if desired.
    Sergeant Parkin then said that the allegation was that defendants on the 8th February last did leave a fire which they had used in the open air before the same was completely extinguished.
    Mr Macpherson said defendants denied the charge, and were prepared to go on.
    Constable Maher, William Bird, and Messrs McMahon and Pearson gave evidence in support of the affirmative, and were cross examined by Mr Macpherson. This closed the case for the police. Mr Macpherson then asked the Bench to dismiss the cases on the ground that there was no evidenced be fore the court to show that defendants had left the fire which they had used before it was completely extinguished.

  • 21 Jan 1932: One of the worst bush fires in the memory of the oldest residents occurred here on Friday and Saturday, when a devastating fire swept over the district. On Friday, a fire, which had been burning in the scrub, fanned by a strong north wind, menaced the residence of Mr. McMillan, and in response to a call for help, about 50 men were soon engaged in a fierce fight to save the house and outbuildings. This they managed to do, and the fire then jumped the main road and threatened the residence of the Misses McLean; a break was burned, and the house was safe. On Saturday morning another fire commenced near Miss McLean’s boundary fence, and soon the residences of Messrs. Blair, Boker and Gilpin, and a number of others were in danger. A large band of willing workers managed to save the houses, but unfortunately they could not save the fine lemon orchard of Mr. McMillan, which was destroyed, also a week-end residence of Mr. Harkins. The heat was so great when the place got alight that it was im possible to get near it. In the after noon a sudden change of wind to the south caused the township to be menaced, and a desperate call for help was sent out, and in reply volunteers from Berwick, Narre Warren and Dandenong came to augment the local Bush Fire Brigade, until there were over 200 men, under the direction of Constable Barrett, and other leaders, engaged in the desperate effort to save the homes of Madame Montigue, Messrs. McBride, McDonald, Harvey-Smith, Rev. T. Greenwood, Robinson, J. Campbell, Major Campbell, Miss Elliott, J. Deville, C. Ellis, Claydon, Wright, Binding and Brown. The worst fight was at “Kyogle,” Mr. McDonald’s house; at one time it was felt that this fine residence would go, but the determined fight put up by the willing workers saved it. Here it was that anxiety was felt for one band who had become surrounded by flames, but they managed to get clear, although some of them succumbed to heat and smoke after getting out. The fine garden and plantation of Major Campbell was swept by the fire, despite the efforts of the workers, and hundreds of pounds worth of valuable plants and trees were destroyed, and the fine house was only saved by the superhuman efforts of the fire fighters. Miss Elliott’s house got alight, and part of the roof had to be stripped off before the fire could be put out. Mr. Ellis had the fence and pavilion attached to his tennis court destroyed, and the fire swept through his orchard, only being stopped within a few feet of the house. The house of Mr. Wright was saved by burning a break, as was Mr. Brown’s house and lemon orchard.
    On Sunday afternoon a small fire developed in Salisbury Gully, but it was soon got under control; whilst this was being put out an urgent call for help came from “The Towers,” Mr. Berglund’s property. A large body of men were rushed out, and the fire was got under control before very much damage was done. On Sunday a fire, which had started on the Saturday in Cordner’s Gully, crossed the Officer rd., and threatened the orchard of Mr. F. Love, but it was kept out, and, with the exception of the loss of some fencing, not very much damage was done.   • 12 Mar 1936: FLAMES RISE 60 FEET. Homes Were in Danger.
    UPPER BEACONSFIELD, Wednesday. A roaring inferno of fire, in which flames readied a height of 60ft., confronted fire-fighters at a break between the properties of Mrs. I. S. Norbury and the Rev. T. Howard Smith at Upper Beaconsfield to-day.
    The whole Upper Beaconsfield ridge was ablaze, but, after an exhausting fight, 60 members of the Upper Beaconsfield bush fire brigade saved the properties which were in danger.
    Fanned by a northerly wind, the fire, which had been under control on Tuesday night, broke out afresh this morning, and within a few hours huge clouds of smoke reduced the range of visibility in some parts of the district to 10 yards.
    The properties which were in the greatest danger were those of Mrs. Norbury, Messrs. C. A. Berglund, E. Wintle, H. Albers, and Vickers. Messrs. Murchison, Wednesday -While driving along the Shepparton road, near Murchison, this afternoon Councillor C A Berglund, of the Collingwood City Council, who was accompanied by his wife and married daughter, Mrs Horan, of Kent street, Kew lost control of his car in the loose metal on the side of the road and the vehicle went over the embankment and overturned.     Mrs Kate Berglund, 80, of Upper Beaconsfield, received severe lacerations when a car driven by her husband skidded and hit an electric light pole in Cotham-rd. Kew, last night.
    She was admitted to St. Vincent’s Hospital.

David Russell, whose untimely death is reported elsewhere, worked most of his life with the Berwick owned business of Loveridge's, and succeeded his father as Manager of the B. U. store on Bill’s retirement shortly after his 70th birthday.
Bill Russell recalls the scene at Charing Cross around the outbreak of World War 1:
The Milk Bar (presently leased by Tom Van der Dolder, previously by Allens and Cooks, and owned retrospectively by Beckwith, Stuckett, Pingo, Colles and Mrs G. Thompson) was a confectionery and fruitmongery conducted by Horner and Funnell. Immediately adjacent (now Mick O’Riley and Anne McKay's art/craft enterprise) was a grocery conducted by Bill Berglund, whose father created “The Towers” on the road after his own name.
Across Halford Road was Tom “Sport” Brady’s hire coach shed (now still exhibiting well-weathered petroleum advertisements). A former garage owner in Melbourne, Tom retired to B. U. and lived in a small in-built section of the building which was formerly the co-operative fruit packing shed at Beaconsfield railway station. Across the Emerald Road, now Jack Stephen’s butcher's shop, was “Boss” Shorthouse’s headquarters for a Royal Mail and passenger horse coach/bus service. (Later Bill Berglund’s grocery moved to this site).
Alongside it, now Loveridges, was John Nathan’s general store. (Nathan’s first store opposite the Cenotaph, now Cr Keith Ewenson’s, was burnt down. He set up next door to the Salisbury Road Hall, then moved to the Loveridge’s site in 1929. Here John Glissman had constructed the present building, employing some of the timber from the Village's first school.)
Bill Russell, who lived with his family in Berwick, came into Loveridge’s employment as counter hand and delivery man in the early 1930’s when Loveridges bought the business from Nathan.
Trading at that time continued to 10 pm. on Saturday nights to cater for the influx of weekend holiday-makers. Wednesdays were closed days. Bill slept in the store for a month then brought his family to rent "Rosemont" in A’Beckett Road (now Mrs Atkinson's).
When Bill Noblet managed Loveridge’s (succeeding Syd Dean), Bill Russell moved into the Berglund shop and cottage at the rear, and subsequently purchased it. When Mrs. Russell died about 18 years ago, the former grocery shop (then acting as a bed-sitting room) was leased to Jack Stephens. Prior to this Jack was a taxi cab operator in Emerald.
Among Bill Russell’s regular chores some 40 years ago was the delivery of 44 gallon drums of lime-sulphur to the many orchards, by horse and dray. Later it was in the comfort of a 13 model Ford motor truck.
Bill ultimately took over the management of Loveridge’s for 4 years, before son David was to give him a well earned rest. Like the publicity he received when phasing out of a long association with the store, Bill's mother Celia came very much into the limelight when she celebrated her 100th birthday at the Pine Grove Hotel.

Charles Bertram Berglund was a Corporal in the Light Horse, Citizen Military Forces of the Beaconsfield District when he enlisted on 10 Nov 1915, aged 26. His father wrote that Bert 'was Staff Sergeant-Major in various camps in Victoria and could not get to the Front, as he was either kidnapped or bolted with (then) Colonel Tivey's Brigade as staff officers were barred from going'. He embarked from Melbourne on board HMAT A11 Ascanius on 10 Nov 1915 as a warrant Officer with the 8th Infantry Brigade Train. He served in Egypt and on the Western Front. He was mentioned in despatches. SERN 8077.
He died in France from influenza on 4 Nov 1918, just a week before the war finished.
His name is listed on the Upper Beaconsfield War Memorial and on the Honour Board at the Upper Beaconsfield RSL.1,2

Son of Charles Alexander Berglund and Sarah Kate Berglund, worked as an orchardist at The Towers on Berglund Rd where he lived before he enlisted. The Towers is still occupied by his niece. He embarked on the HMAT Ascanius, ship A11, on 10/11/1915 from Melbourne.4

  • 2 Feb 1904: A NARROW ESCAPE. A telegraph boy named Charles Berglund met with an accident in Collins-street yesterday which might easily have proved fatal. In running for a Port Melbourne tram he was struck by another coming in the opposite direction, and was dragged along for several yards. Constable Prest took the boy to the Melbourne Hospital, where he was found to have received severe cuts and abrasions on the head and back. After treatment the boy, who is 15 years of age, was taken to his home in Rupert-street, Collingwood.12
  • 28 Oct 1914: BEACONFIELD UPPER. Mr C. B. Berglund had the misfortune to lose his military horse last week. The animal received an injury to his hock joint and had to be destroyed. As the horse was well trained in military work Mr Berglund's loss is rather a severe one.13

  • 15 Mar 1916: NEWS FROM EGYPT. Warrant Officer B. Berglund, of Upper Beaconsfield, who is now in Egypt, sends us the following letter: We had a very good trip over, but it was very rough from the time we passed through the Heads until we left Australian waters. I was sick on the second day only, but some were sick for the whole trip. Jim Adamson, of the Beaconsfield boys, had a rather bad trip, Hugo Avard had a fairly good trip, but generally speaking most men were ill for a week. After a week it was both a common and amusing sight to see some of the boys come to light after their lapse of sea-sickness, for in most cases they were unshaven, and had not had a wash for days. We were 20 days on the water without seeing either ships or land, but on the 21st day land was sighted, and there was great excitement. On the following day we passed Aden, and on the next we saw the flash lighthouses of Perim. Our trip was from this onward getting more interesting. Up to then it was monotonous as the space on ship-board was too limited for about 2000 soldiers to do any drill, though we did a little drill that did not need moving off the ground, or rather, the deck we stood on. The only excitement during these times was when we had false alarms for "collision" or "fire" drill, when every man had to go below and put on his life belt as quickly and silently as possible. We had one burial at sea—Private Gurr, who died of pneumonia. It was a most impressive service, and was held in the stern of the ship. The boat was stopped for half an-hour during the service. He was buried with the good old Union Jack wrapped around his body. We were told that when we reached the Red Sea it would be very warm, but we were agreeably surprised, as it turned out cool until we reached our des tination, Port Suez. We held our crossing the line sports on Nov. 27. They were a great success, as far as the audience was concerned. I was one of the victims, but was let off as I had no spare clothes: There were 8 officers and 20 N.C.O's. and 3 privates ducked and pasted over. It was greatly enjoyed by all, from the Brigadier down to the Private. After we reached Suez we were anchored in the bay before we pulled in to the wharf. I shall never forget the sight I saw as we came alongside the wharf at Suez. The place looked very dirty and the dress and habits of the natives are more than I can describe, in fact, now I never pass a native any closer than I can help, and I hold my breath when passing them. There are a few who wash themselves. On the whole they are a mixed lot. The Egyptians are a bit better. We left the vessel on Dec. 17 and went by train to Heliopolis camp, where there is a large number of horses and men. When I arrived there I met many who knew me. All the railways here are practically level, as the country is a sandy desert. The railways are worked entirely by Egyptians ard the engines are the size of our suburban engines, and they pull about 40 carriages, 1st, 2nd and 3rd class. The carriages are about the size of our old "dog box" type, but have a passage from one end of the train to the other. The 1st is as good as our old 2nd class carriage. The trains travel from 15 to 20 miles an hour. The drivers are terrors at blow ing their shrill whistle, in fact I think they have one man pulling at the whistle nearly all the time. It is very amusing to see the natives unloading the trains and boats. "They gabble at the top of their voices all the time, and about hal-a-dozen lift the goods and put them on one nigger's back. They carry up to 6 cwt. in this way. You could not credit it, but I can vouch for it, as they carried a range which weighed 6 cwt. They want to be watched, but they are useful to do the rough and dirty work about the camps. Though it is winter here the days are like our nice Spring days at home. But the nights are very cold and the early mornings damp and foggy, and the sand is also as cold as ice. It is a very bad place to live for any person who suffers from rheumatism. So far I have not had a day's illness. We have not a single civilian here—all are soldiers. There are no shops at which to buy any thing, and it is no use going out as there is nothing to see. When I was at Heliopolis I went through the Australian General Hospital. It is a fine building with over 800 rooms. It was the famous Palace Hotel, built by a Belgian syndicate for a Casino, but was refused a licence. Everything in it is of marble, and it cost over 2½ million pounds, I am told. There were over 2,000 patients in it when I was there. This city, excepting the native quarter, is only six years old. I was in Cairo for two days and went up to the pyramids and climbed up one of them. The view from the top is most extensive. You can see Cairo, about 7 or 8 miles off. It costs 1½d in our money to go by tram from Heliopolis to Cairo, about seven miles, and takes only 13 minutes. The trams are simi lar to those in Melbourrne. Cairo is a wonderful place, and I could have spent a week there. "Shepherd's" and the Continental Hotel are mansions and it costs about 17s 6d a day to live there. I went through the famous Cita del and saw the holes made by the cannon balls ; one ball is still in the wall. I saw the museum, and there I saw bread and meat over 200 years old, mummies 2000 years old, and many other wonderful things too numerous to mention here. The natives on the land are great workers, not hard workers, but they keep at it constantly. The fertility of the soil is wonderful. This is due to water. It is a great feat of engineering to bring the water by canals and channels from the famous Nile river, which is over 100 miles from here. Some parts of the land are a few feet higher than these channels, and in such cases the natives have a crude sort of water-wheel worked by a bullock, horseworks fashion, to lift the water on to their land. It is a very slow prccess, but never theless they obtain the desired result. They grow almost every thing - cabbages, cauliflowers, beans, peas, lettuce, tomatoes, rice, lucerne, maize, oranges, lemons, etc. The resources and mode of living of these natives is wonderful. We brought over a very fine lot of horses with us, and I have a good one, which is very necessary for my work. I was surprised to see the number of horses here. They are all look ing exceedingly well. They are under a reed-covered roof and most of them have feed boxes. A most peculiar thing here is that the horses must have tether chains as they all have the habit of chewing the ropes. A common trouble amongst the horses is sand colic, and nearly every day some have to be doctored for it. They are fond of licking up the sand and gnawing rope, wood, etc. A large number of camels are used by the military authorities. The Indians are mostly camel and mule drivers, and the camels are mostly Indian bred.15
  • 24 May 1916: Charles Bertram Berglund, of Beaconsfield Upper, who enlisted in the Expeditionary Forces as a private has been promoted to the rank of 2nd lieutenant. After enlisting he passed through a school of instruction and was appointed at staff sergeant-major and was for some months en gaged in drilling troops at the various camps. He left Australia as a warrant officer in Colonel Tivey's brigade.16

Anecdote*bt 1875 - 1880Schlipalius, Charles Leopold (1848 - 1927). Born in Victoria, probably at Heidelberg, a suburb of Melbourne, on 14 December 1848, and died at Melbourne on 10 February 1927.
Family information is that both he and his father, Charles Gustave Schlipalius (1823/24-1897), worked for F. Mueller at the Melbourne Botanic Gardens around the period 1875-80. The specimen of Eucalyptus bosistoana simply states the collector was ‘Schlipalius’ but it appears highly probable that Charles Leopold was the collector of the lectotype, since he is understood ‘to have collected specimens of eucalypts for classification’. Additional support comes from the family record that he had a personal knowledge of Gippsland, an area of south-eastern Victoria in which E. bosistoana occurs. His father, Charles Gustave Schlipalius, migrated from Saxony, Germany, in 1845.

Crown grant to C L SCHLIPALIUS on 11 May 1887.4 
Land-Note8 Apr 1885 GEM-D-50. C L Schlipalius on 8 Apr 1885 declared that he had erected about 160 chains of fencing, and that he had arranged with his neighbours Albers and Deeley to build them. In the years since selection he had cultivated six acres at a value of £12 per acre with potatoes, hay and vegetables. He had built a wetherboard house of 4 rooms slab, with iron chimney and roof, also slab stables (one two stalled stable, one cart shed and harness room, of slabs and wattle and daub), valued at £120. He also planted an orchard of one acre containing about 200 fruit trees, valued at £30. He dug a well 16 feet deep, seven by three feet wide, value £10.
C L Schlipalius stated that he had resided there for five years with his family, and that he did not own any other property. The land was not fit for cropping, as it did not pay a return for labour invested.5 
Land-Note*15 Jul 1887 GEM-D-50: Mortgagee: Isaac Boynton and Edward Brooks - discharged 19 Sep 1888. This affected only the western side of the property (109 a), adjoining GEM-D-49. Mortgagor was Charles Leopold Schlipalius.6

380. To the Chairman.—I am a gardener, residing in Upper Beaconsfield. I have lived here seventeen years. I hold 310 acres, and have about 14 acres under cultivation—5 acres orchard, and the rest used for cropping. My nearest railway station is Beaconsfield, 6 1/2 miles away. There is a very fair road, only the hills are the drawback. I have produced nothing for a railway as yet, because the cost of sending to the railway station would eat up all the profit; the haulage comes very expensive. The proposed Oakleigh to Gembrook line, which we advocate, would go within half-a-mile of me; it does not go over my land. From within 4 or 5 miles of Oakleigh to where I am it will open up country. I cannot say how many acres are under cultivation. There is a great deal of production there that does not go by either railway, but by drays from Black Flats and Mulgrave. If there were a narrow-gauge line to Oakleigh people within 6 miles would do as they do now, and would not send to Oakleigh. From Oakleigh to my place is about 18 miles. I would guarantee to send a certain number of tons if there were a narrow-gauge line from my place to Oakleigh ; I could guarantee 2,000 tons of firewood. I have the timber there, but it does not pay to deal in firewood now, because of the cost of sending to a railway station. It costs 10s. a ton to take it the 6 miles from here to the railway station ; it used to cost 15s and £1 to within the last eighteen months.
381. To Mr. J. S. White.—If all other parts of the colony send in firewood, I cannot say whether we could all find consumption of it in Melbourne, if there were no consumption of course I would not send it.
382. To Mr. Harris.—There are abont 150 residents within a circle of a mile. People take only about 8 or 10 cwt. to the station by horse. I think we could place all that firewood; I have not made any inquiries about it. I think we could place it in Melbourne because it is the quality that is wanted. It is peppermint, which will make its way against messmate and stringybark. In advocating a line from Oakleigh to Gembrook, I reckoned that a line to start from Beaconsfield would never pay in itself, whereas starting from Oakleigh we should support it from start to finish, and it would pay on the construction fully 5 per cent. if it costs £2,500 a mile. If there were a deficit I would be willing to have my land taxed to make it up, because I have every confidence that it will pay.

  • 20 Jun 1888: The land fever has managed to reach this sylvan retreat, and some very high prices have been obtained for some of the blocks which have been sold. I am informed that a Melbourne syndicate have purchased a block known a Shorthouse's corner for something like £75 per acre, and the same syndicate have also bought Mr. Schlipalius' farm of 320 acres for £16 per acre. A few years ago the same land could have been bought for half that sum, which would have been considered a good price. I have been told that the purchasee of these two blocks intend cutting them up into small allotments and reselling, when they hope to reap good profit. I have not the least doubt but that they will sell a large number if not all of the allotments, as enquiries are constantly being made by would be purchasers, who would buy a small but not a large piece of land.37

SCHLIPALIUS.-The Friends of the late Mrs. JESSIE ANN SCHLIPALIUS are informed that her remains will be interred in the St. Kilda Cemetery.
The funeral will leave her residence, 9 William street. Malvern, THIS DAY (Monday, the 4th May) at 3.30 p.m.8
