  • 7 Oct 1942: Death of Old Officer Resident. OFFICER lost another of its grand old residents on October 2, when the death took place, after an illness of some months, of Mrs. Eliza Catherine Tivendale, just one year short of her 90th year. The late Mrs. Tivendale has resided in the Officer district for many years and the family is well and favorably known throughout the district. She was pre-deceased by her husband and is survived by three sons and one daughter - George, Matilda, William and Ernest. Her remains were interred in the Church of England portion of the St. Kilda cemetery on Saturday. W.J. Garnar and Son conducting the funeral.9

  • 6 Oct 1910: UPPER BEACONSFIELD TENNIS DANCE.
    The members of the Upper Beaconsfield Tennis Club gave their annual dance on Saturday evening, 17th September. The Assembly Hall was beautifully and artistically decorated by Mrs. Harvey Smith, assisted by the lady members of the club, with garlands of shaded yellow poppies, interspersed with ivy and ferns. The supper tables were done in masses of peach blossom and maidenhair fern, with festoons of pink ribbons. The excellent supper provided by the lady members was partaken of after the company had unmasked with great merriment at 10 o'clock. The dance, which took the form of a Masque and Fancy Dress Ball, proved the most enjoyable and successful the club has yet given. The president (Mr. W. Harvey Smith) gave two handsome prizes for the best sustained characters. These were won by Miss D. Thomson (Folly) and Mr. Roy Tyler (Simplicitas).

Place in Upper Beac* Knapton Avenue. Originally the Beaconsfield-Emerald Road end of Sugarloaf Road was known as Knapton Road, as the Knapton family owned (and subdivided) land there. Then the Sugarloaf Roaf name was adopted for the whole road. When the Brennan Estate was subdivided one of the roads off St Georges Road was called Knapton Avenue. Frank Knapton, a contractor, cleared the land for Brennan.

Note*Apr 1972 Frank Knapton was a contractor who was killed by a front end loader. His daughter was going to England, and accompanied by her mother she went to see her father to say goodbye, at a job he was doing in Berwick. When her father saw them he said "just a moment" and he jumped off the loader and walked underneath the bucket of the loader, and the bucket fell down on his head.31

  • 2 Oct 1931: BEACONSFIELD UPPER - While carting prunings in his father's orchard Frank Knapton, elder son of Mr and Mrs L W Knapton, of Kooringal, North Beaconsfield, fell from the top of a load to the ground fracturing a bone in his left arm and splintering a bone in his right wrist.37
  • 23 Apr 1938: BERWICK - Frank Leslie Knapton was charged at the Berwick Police Court with having aided and abetted a youth to ignite inflammable material. Evidence was given that the fire caused a serious bush fire at Beaconsfield Upper on February 3. Knapton was fined £10. The youth was aged less than 17 years.38
  • 23 Apr 1938: UPPER BEACONSFIELD FIRE. "Good Day for Burning Off." Police Court-Sequel.
    DANDENONG, Friday.— An outbreak of fire, which started in scrub country at Beaconsfield Upper in February last, and swept through several properties, was responsible for the appearance of Frank Leslie Knopton in the Berwick court of petty sessions to-day before Mr. Addison, P.M.
    Knopton was charged with aiding and abetting Con George Horrigan, of Upper Beaconsfield, to ignite inflammable material. Horrigan had said to Knopton, according to evidence given, that "it was a good day for burning off that block." Knopton replied that it was, but did not give orders for this to be done.
    John Richardson, of Berwick, a member of the Beaconsfield Upper Bush Fire Brigade, stated that a large number of volunteers had to be called out, and a "break"' had to be burned to prevent the fire from jumping across the main Emerald road.
    Knopton pleaded guilty. The police magistrate, in inflicting a fine of £10, said he regarded the offence as a serious one. George Cornelius Horrigan39
  • 27 Apr 1938: FIRE SEQUEL. YOUNG MAN FINED £10.
    Frank Leslie Knapton, a young horticulturist, of Upper Beaconsfield, appeared before Mr. Addison, P.M., and honorary justices, at the Berwick Court, on Friday, to answer a charge of aiding and abetting another person to ignite inflamable material. He pleaded guilty.
    John Richardson, dairy farmer, of Upper Beaconsfield, said he was a lieutenant, of the local Bush Fire Brigade, and on the afternoon of February 3, while at work, he saw a cloud of smoke. Upon investigation he found a scrub fire, and found it necessary to burn a break and then call volunteer firemen, who made an effort to prevent the flames from crossing the main Emerald road.
    Evidence by First-constable Bryant disclosed that on February 8 he went to Knapton’s home where he told defendant and a lad named Harrigan that he was investigating circumstances concerning the fire. After questioning, an admission was made by Harrigan. It was alleged that Knapton had stated to Harrigan, on the day of the fire, “that it would be a good day to get the bush burnt.”
    No statement was made by defendant in court, and he was fined £10, in default one month’s imprisonment:
    The magistrate remarked that the offence was a serious one.40

My two brothers and my sister have bicycles, and I learnt to ride on them. I have a little kitten, and I call it Tabby. The mother cat goes out in the bush and brings home rabbits for the kitten. One day she brought home a live rabbit, but the kitten let it go, and my brother chased it, and caught it and killed it for the kitten. We are all going to the beach for a holiday, I am eight years old, and I am going up to the fourth grade at school this year. We have a Girl Guide company and a Brownie Pack in Upper Beaconsfield. We went for a picnic to the waterfalls on New Years Day at North Beaconsfield. We walked through a lot of bush and tracks along the creek, and we had our afternoon tea there With love, from Nancy." — For eight years of age this is a very nicely written letter, Nancy, and I hope you will send me many more, as, of course, I have put your name on my roll as you ask. Your home is in a very pretty part of Victoria, and I should think that the Guides and Brownies have lovely times making excursions to all the pretty spots near Beaconsfield.14

A blue angora frock with matching muff to which was fastened a bunch of violets with matching tulle hat trimmed with violets, was worn by Nancy Brita Knapton for her marriage to Neil Stirling Burrows at St. James Old Cathedral, West Melbourne. Rev. R J Rowell officiated. The bride who is the younger daughter of Mr and Mrs L W Knapton, Kooringal, Beaconsfield Upper, was given away by her father. She was unattended.
    The bridegroom, who is the second son of Mr and Mrs S A Burrows, Haldane st., Beaumaris, had Mr Frank L Knapton as best man. A reception was held at the home of Mr J W Knapton, the bride's grandfather, Cole st., Elwood.16

  • 6 Dec 1889: William Knapton, late of Alexander-street, East St. Kilda, contractor, by his will dated August 2, 1887, appointed James Flett Neville, architect, of Kerford-road, South Melbourne, and John Knapton, printer, of Little Collins-street, Melbourne, executors. He bequeathed all his estate, both real and personal, unto his wife, Ellen Knapton, for life. After her death he directs that his estate should be disposed of as follows : To each of his two sons, Samuel and John, £100 ; to each of his daughters, Emily Watson and Ellen Knapton, £100 ; to each of his step-sons, William and Flett Neville, £100 ; to his step-daughter, Alice Hater, £100 ; and if any surplus remains over this it is to be equally divided amongst the above named and his step-son, George Neville.   • 3 Mar 1903: BEACONSFIELD. — When Mr. Knapton was being driven to his home at Beaconsfield North, the horse in the jinker ran away down the steep hill leading to the Stony Creek-bridge, near the State school. Swerving suddenly, it snapped off the shafts, upsetting the trap, and throwing the driver, Mr. Trinham, and Mr. Knapton on the roadway. Mr. Trinham was only severely shaken, but hid companion had his left leg broken in three places, and other injuries. John George Trinham27
  • 4 Mar 1903: At Upper Beaconsfield on Saturday evening a serious accident happened to Mr. Knapton, who recently purchased a property in that locality. In company with his son, he was being driven by a friend in a gig from the Railway Station. When nearing his home the horse bolted down a hill, overturning the vehicle and throwing the occupants to the ground. Mr. Knapton's leg was broken in five places below the knee.28
  • 18 May 1906: BRITISH PRINTERS' PRIZE COMPETITION. MELBOURNE PRINTER SUCCESSFUL.
    Melbourne. 17th May. A Melbourne printer had been successful in gaining the gold medal given in connection with the British Printers' Prize Competion. This competition has been carried out for the past nine years, and this is the first occasion on which the medal has been won by a printer outside the United Kingdom. The successful gentleman is Mr. A. Carson, foreman printer to Messrs. Knapton and Co., of Little Collins-street. The prize which he has won is a gold medal presented by Messrs. Raithly. Lawrence and Co., of Leicester. There was a large num ber of competitors, each one being given certain printing matter, which he was asked to set up in artistic style. Out of the numerous specimens seat in, Mr. Carson's design was regarded as the most artistic, and he was awarded the medal, together with a certificate.29
  • 25 Mar 1914: Mr and Mrs Knapton and family, who are leaving Upper Beaconsfield to take up their residence in Melbourne were entertained at a well attended social on Monday night last. The Rev. J. Wilson, on behalf of those present expressed regret at their departure and referred to the good work done by them. Mr Knapton suitably responded. World War I

William John Knapton, aged 22 and working as an orchardist enlisted on 26 Feb 1915. He enlisted at the same time as two other soldiers from Upper Beaconsfield, John Berry and George Gibbs and they all embarked from Melbourne on board HMAT A14 Euripides on 10 May 1915 with the 23rd Battalion. Colonel George Knox was also on board the same ship. SERN 579.
He served in Egypt, Gallipoli and the Western Front, and was a Corporal at the time of his death. He died of wounds on 11 Jan 1917, and is buried at Heilly Station Cemetery (Plot V, Row F, Grave No. 41), Mericourt-L'Abbe, France.
His family were long time residents of Upper Beaconsfield and his name is listed on the Upper Beaconsfield War Memorial and on the Honour Board at the Upper Beaconsfield RSL.1,2

Australian Infantry 23rd Battalion. He was the son of William and Eliza Knapton, and worked as an orchardist before he enlisted. Eliza Knapton’s family, the Trinhams, were the first orchardists in Upper Beaconsfield. Corporal Knapton’s brother, Leslie Knapton, operated an orchard in Stoney Creek Road for many years, and it then passed to his eldest son, Bill Knapton, until Bill Knapton sold it after the Ash Wednesday bushfires. Corporal Knapton embarked on HMAT Euripides, A14, on 10/5/1915, from Melbourne, survived Gallipoli then went on to France. He died on 11/1/1917, in France, aged 23.6

  • 30 Jan 1917: OUR SOLDIERS. DEATH OF CPL W. J. KNAPTON. Much regret was expressed by all who knew him, when it became known that Corporal William J. Knapton, late of Tresco, had died of wounds. The sad event took place on 11th January, at the 38th Casualty Clearing Station, France. Cpl. Knapton at the time of his death, was in his 24th year. His parents, Mr and Mrs J. W. Knapton, live in Elsternwick. The deceased young soldier came to the Mystic Park district about five years ago, and was in the employ of Mr H. Angus for two or three years for the purpose of getting general farming experience. He afterwards took up land on the Tresco Estate, which he worked up to the time of enlisting. He felt it his duty to obey his country's call and joined the ranks about 18 months ago. He was a very fine, steady, energetic and intelligent young man, loved and respected by all his acquaintances. He was wounded in the battle of Pozieres, in July last. Having recovered sufficiently, he returned to the front, where he was again wounded, this time, unfortunately, fatally. Corporal Knapton, was a nephew of the Rev. T. P. Trinham, who was for many years Baptist minister in Kerang.8

  • 3 Mar 1903: BEACONSFIELD. — When Mr. Knapton was being driven to his home at Beaconsfield North, the horse in the jinker ran away down the steep hill leading to the Stony Creek-bridge, near the State school. Swerving suddenly, it snapped off the shafts, upsetting the trap, and throwing the driver, Mr. Trinham, and Mr. Knapton on the roadway. Mr. Trinham was only severely shaken, but hid companion had his left leg broken in three places, and other injuries. John William Knapton35
  • 30 Jun 1906: Beaconsfield, Tuesday.—Only in a few orchards has the apple crop been good, and even there it has not been general, but confined to a few varieties. Taken as a whole, the crop is short. Mr. T. P. Trinham, Fairfield Orchard, had an excellent crop. In Messrs. T. H. Grant and Co.'s orchard (Toomuc Valley), the total output this year was about 20,000 cases. The "Yates" crop was exceptionally fine, approximating 6,000 cases, worth about £3,000. Some other varieties also yielded well, and as prices are high the present year, in spite of the great general shortage, promises to be the most profitable which the " Valley" growers have had.
    Mr. Trinham has decided to give up growing stone fruits, except for home consumption. He says that the apple-growing industry will prove most valuable when thoroughly established, and confined to a limited number of varieties in general favour. Experience shows that whilst almost any apple will grow in the Beaconsfield ranges, only a few kinds are likely to pay, and the beginner who wishes to live by his orchard must plant such sorts as can be produced in quantity and quality. This applies to other localities as well as Beaconsfield.
    The demand for good export apples is good, and the prices obtainable from the buyers in Melbourne are sufficient to encourage anyone to plant apples. The chief reason why so many shipments turn out badly is that the buyers, anxious to catch the early markets, ship unripe fruit.
    In order to carry well, the apple must reach a certain stage of ripeness on the tree. Then, for obvious reasons, the shipper should endeavour to keep as near as possible to the regulation-size, viz., 2¼in. But in order to make the European trade a complete success, the grower will have to send direct. When putting up stuff for his own shipments, a man who knows his business will put up only such fruit as will be most likely to reach the consumer in sound condition. As it is now, Melbourne buyers often buy a whole crop for export, and failure for which the grower is not to blame often results. The buyer, eager to get space filled early, worries the grower to go through the orchard, and pick out the most forward fruit. This practice is not infrequently the direct cause of loss, in the case of early shipments. A competent grower ought to know by experience just when the apple is fit for export, and then, if space were available, could put on board an apple produced in Beaconsfield that could not be beaten anywhere else. At the present time Mr. Trinham is preparing a shipment for South Africa.36
  • 1 May 1913: The Beaconsfield District. Early Days and Present Doings.
    "Apples and health" are the two things that the Beaconsfield of today claims to specialise in. But it was for neither of these that the firstcomers invaded the solitude of the hills: What is now known as Upper Beaconsfield, was at one time a sheep run, but neither the shepherds nor their flocks, nor the occasional hunters after kangaroo, left any lasting impression or disturbed in any way the condition of the primeval forest. The first "improvements" were made by parties of diggers, who in 1870 uprooted some of the peaceful gullies in search of gold. The finds were not sufficiently rich to compete with the attractions of Bendigo, which started a couple of years later, and the miners moved on. It is still believed by many, however, that payable gold exists in the district in considerable quantities.
    The Earliest Settlers.
    Indirectly the mining led to more permanent settlement, for it was an amendment of the mining clauses of the 1869 Land Act, enabling persons to select 20 acres of land without being obliged to comply with the residence clause, that induced a number of city men in 1878 79 to take up blocks and carry out the necessary improvements. It was at this time that the first cottages were built, and gardens and orchards planted on the hillsides. The belts and clumps of dark pine trees attached to these earlier residences now stand out conspicuously against the prevailing colour of the surrounding gum trees, and show the visitor that he is not approaching an altogether new settlement. A nearer inspection discloses the fruit trees, still healthy and productive, and the gardens, luxuriant with all the plants, shrubs and bushes of a temperate climate. The peculiar health-giving character of the air was soon discovered, and in itself was sufficient to ensure the permanence of the settlement. Several doctors built themselves houses, to which they came to recuperate, and many invalids who came as visitors remained as residents. The salubrity of the climate is thought to be due, first to the altitude (from 800 to 1000 feet), which is sufficient to make it light and bracing, without being so high as to be severe; and, secondly, to the fact that the sea breezes reach the ranges after passing over 14 to 20 miles of forest country, the exhalations of the eucalyptus increasing the virtues of the ozone from the ocean.
    Present Day Developments.
    The distance from the railway station to Upper Beaconsfield post office is five miles. For the first three miles the road is level, straight and tree bordered, with cleared and cultivated land on each side. Here Mr Payne has a large farm, and has recently cut up about 400 acres into blocks for orchard purposes, and Messrs Bunting Bros. have a dairy, where they are milking 40 cows. Soon after commencing the assent, Mr Luke's 60-acre farm is seen, with the house pleasantly situated on a hill, and cultivated fields in the foreground. Besides farming, Mr Luke is giving some attention to floriculture. On the opposite side of the road is the homestead of Mr Neville, who specialises in passion fruit, which he finds a very remunerative crop. Further along Mr M'Lean has a nice block of lemon trees in full bearing, and remarkably healthy. On the strength of the success of this plantation Mr Ward has planted a lemon grove near by, the trees being now in their second year. Mr Ward is also a grower of strawberries. Another lemon grove belongs to Mr Fisher. We are now fairly amongst the hills, with the road zigzagging along the ridges, and cottages with their gardens met with every turn. Besides the big pines and other ornamental trees, there are chestnuts, walnuts, loquaats, and a large variety of fruit trees, which add to the attractions of the mountain homes. The commercial orchards are somewhat scattered, some being 7 or 8 miles from the railway station, but there are sufficient of them, old and new, to show that fruit growing is the industry peculiar to the district. The oldest, as well as the a great orchard, belonging to Mr J. G. Trinham is 40 acres in extent, and was planted sixteen years ago. This is a highly improved property, being underdrained throughout, and laid out on thoroughly up-to-date lines, with only the best varieties of apples-mainly Jonathans, Yates, Rokewood and Statesman. The trees, though not remarkably large for their age, are very uniform in size, well shaped and thoroughly healthy. This season's crop is estimated at between 6000 and 7000 cases. The next orchard in point of size is that of Captain Jones, 35 acres; then come Mr Marsh, with 25 acres ; Mr Bunt, 20 acres; and Mr J. Tyler, 16 acres. Messrs Glissmann and Albers were amongst the earliest of the planters. Other orchards worthy of note belong to Messrs Knapton, Kirkwood, Stenhouse, M'Lean, Crook, Berglund and Miss Day. All these plantations are well established and profitable, producing an aggregate of from 10,000 to 12,000 cases per annum. There are several younger places coming on, the largest of which is 25 acres of three-year old trees, belonging to Dr N. M'Arthur. The planting projected for the coming season amounts to about 100 acres. The present activity in the export trade, together with the superior quality of the apples grown in the district, is directing attention to Beaconsfield as a promising field for extending the industry. Business Methods. No orchard is complete without some means for dealing with waste and surplus fruit. Too often fruit is sent to market which should never have left the orchard; it is a nuisance to the salesman and no credit to the grower. In many cases, the prices realised are so small that it would have, paid better to bury it in the ground. But there are other ways of disposing of inferior apples, providing they are sufficiently ripe-one of these is pigs, and another cider. Pig fattening does not find much favour amongst orchardists, because fruit in itself is not a complete food ; because the business cannot be suddenly expanded to cope with the result of a wind storm or a fall in market values, and because it is easier to buy pigs and feed them for a few months than it is to sell them at a profit. Cider making is an industry as yet in its infancy in this country. Mr J. T. Trinham has a crushing mill and cider press installed in his orchard, and all the windfalls and undersized or defective apples are put through these, the newly expressed juice, or must, being put into 36-gallon casks and sent to a Melbourne cider factory. A bushel of apples yields about 2½ gallons of juice, which, if it comes up t0 the required standard when tested by the saccharometer, is worth 8½d a gallon at the factory. This is equal to 1/9 a case, or, reckoning a bushel as weighing 40 lbs, £3 18/ a too. Some cider factories give £310/ a ton for the apples in bulk, which, taking into con sideration cost of plant, casks, labour and freight, is about equal to the price given for the must. It would not pay to grow apples for this purpose, but it is far better that they should be used so than left on the ground or sent to the market to spoil the sale of good fruit. Mr J. Tyler, a neighbour of Mr Trinham, makes vinegar of some of his waste apples, which he is able to sell locally at remunerative prices. The alternative of drying does not seem to have occurred to the apple growers of this part of the State. Sun drying is, of course, out of the question ; but artificial evaporation produces an excellent sample of fruit, and for dried apples there is always a ready sale. It might net pay individual growers to dry their surplus fruit any more than it would to turn it into cider, but an evaporating factory in an apple-growing district should be a paying proposition.37

  • 23 Jun 1906: BEACONSFIELD ORCHARDS. THE APPLE CROP.
    BEACONSFIELD. Tuesday. - Only in a few orchards has the apple crop been good, and even there it has not been general, but confined to a few varieties. Taken as a whole, the crop is short. Mr T. P. Trinham, Fairfield Orchard, had an excellent crop. In Messrs. T. H. Grant and Co's orchard (Toomuc Valley), the total output this year was about 20,000 cases. The "Yates" crop was exceptionally fine, approximating 6,000 cases, worth about £3,000. Some other varieties also yielded well, and as prices are high the present year, in spite of the great general shortage, promises to be the most profitable which the "Valley" growers have had. Mr Trinham has decided to give up growing stone fruits, except for home concumption. He says that the apple-growing industry will prove most valuable when thoroughly established and confined to a limited number of varieties in general favour. Experience shows that whilst almost any apple will grow in the Beaconsfield ranges, only a few kinds are likely to pay, and the beginner who wishes to live by his orchard must plant such sorts as can be produced in quantity and quality. This applies to other localities as well as Beaconsfield.
    The demand for good export apples is good, and the prices obtainable from the buyers in Melbourne are sufficient to encourage anyone to plant apples. The chief reason why so many shipments turn out badly is that the buyers, anxious to catch the early markets, ship unripe fruit. In order to carry well, the apple must reach a certain stage of ripeness on the tree. Them, for obvious reasons, the shipper should en deavour to keep as near as possible to the regulation size, vis., 2½ in. But in order to make the European trade a complete success, the grower will have to send direcit. When putting up stuff for his own shipments, a man who known his business will put up only such fruit as will be most likely to reach the consumer in sound condition. As it is now, Melbourne buyers often buy a whole crop for export, and failure for which the grower is not to blame often results. The buyer, eager to get spare filled early, worries the grower to go through the orchard and pick out the most forward fruit. This practice is not infrequently the direct cause of loss, in the case of early shipments. A grower ought to know by experience just when the apple is fit for ex port, and then, if space were available, could put on board an apple produced in Beaconsfield that could not be beaten anywhere else. At the present time Mr. Trinham is preparing a shipment for South Africa.17

    In the course of the Referendum campaign the Rev. Thomas P Trinham, pastor of the Baptist Church, West Melbourne, preached a series of sermons, one titled "National Perils," declared that, although he was a married man, 44 years of age, with six children and a Minister of religion, if people recorded a No majority he should offer his services to the military authorities to go to the Front ... capacity.
    On Monday Mr Trinham kept his promise and volunteered at the Town Recruiting Depot for active service but was rejected by the medical officer.
    For two years Mr Trinham has been pastor at West Melbourne Baptist and prior to that occupied the Baptist Church at Kerang for five years. Since the war began he been an active recruiting ... and has induced a number of young men of his flock to take up and he has a striking personality, and is a forceful preacher.19
  • 14 Nov 1924: BEACONSFIELD UPPER.-The 21st anniversary of the Baptist Church at North Beaconsfield was held on November 9 and 10. The Rev. T. P. Trinham, of Ivanhoe, preached in the afternoon and evening on Sunday, and on Monday evening the Rev. James Wilson presided at the social gathering. An interesting report by the aged president (Mr. Ricketts) was read by the secretary, followed by the treasurer's statement with a balance to credit. , Rev James Wilson Charles Richard Ricketts20
