  • 6 May 1915: Police against Berglund, and Police against Lalor.—Informations for using fire at Upper Beaconsfield contrary to the provisions of the Police Offences Act.
    Sergeant Parkin prosecuted for the Police and Mr Macpherson appeared for both defendants.
    As a preliminary objection, Mr Macpherson asked the Bench to say that no offence appeared on the proceedings. He pointed out that the defendant were responsible people, landowners and their manager, and as the penalty of Section 8 of the Act was a very severe one, being a fine of £100 or imprisonment for six months, it was a matter of the greatest importance to have the alleged offence clearly and explicitly defined. This was not done in the form in which it appeared before the Court.
    Mr Harris agreed with the contention of counsel, and said it was clear that the information should be amended. He would amend the information and grant an adjournment if desired.
    Sergeant Parkin then said that the allegation was that defendants on the 8th February last did leave a fire which they had used in the open air before the same was completely extinguished.
    Mr Macpherson said defendants denied the charge, and were prepared to go on.
    Constable Maher, William Bird, and Messrs McMahon and Pearson gave evidence in support of the affirmative, and were cross examined by Mr Macpherson. This closed the case for the police. Mr Macpherson then asked the Bench to dismiss the cases on the ground that there was no evidenced be fore the court to show that defendants had left the fire which they had used before it was completely extinguished.

  • 21 Jan 1932: One of the worst bush fires in the memory of the oldest residents occurred here on Friday and Saturday, when a devastating fire swept over the district. On Friday, a fire, which had been burning in the scrub, fanned by a strong north wind, menaced the residence of Mr. McMillan, and in response to a call for help, about 50 men were soon engaged in a fierce fight to save the house and outbuildings. This they managed to do, and the fire then jumped the main road and threatened the residence of the Misses McLean; a break was burned, and the house was safe. On Saturday morning another fire commenced near Miss McLean’s boundary fence, and soon the residences of Messrs. Blair, Boker and Gilpin, and a number of others were in danger. A large band of willing workers managed to save the houses, but unfortunately they could not save the fine lemon orchard of Mr. McMillan, which was destroyed, also a week-end residence of Mr. Harkins. The heat was so great when the place got alight that it was im possible to get near it. In the after noon a sudden change of wind to the south caused the township to be menaced, and a desperate call for help was sent out, and in reply volunteers from Berwick, Narre Warren and Dandenong came to augment the local Bush Fire Brigade, until there were over 200 men, under the direction of Constable Barrett, and other leaders, engaged in the desperate effort to save the homes of Madame Montigue, Messrs. McBride, McDonald, Harvey-Smith, Rev. T. Greenwood, Robinson, J. Campbell, Major Campbell, Miss Elliott, J. Deville, C. Ellis, Claydon, Wright, Binding and Brown. The worst fight was at “Kyogle,” Mr. McDonald’s house; at one time it was felt that this fine residence would go, but the determined fight put up by the willing workers saved it. Here it was that anxiety was felt for one band who had become surrounded by flames, but they managed to get clear, although some of them succumbed to heat and smoke after getting out. The fine garden and plantation of Major Campbell was swept by the fire, despite the efforts of the workers, and hundreds of pounds worth of valuable plants and trees were destroyed, and the fine house was only saved by the superhuman efforts of the fire fighters. Miss Elliott’s house got alight, and part of the roof had to be stripped off before the fire could be put out. Mr. Ellis had the fence and pavilion attached to his tennis court destroyed, and the fire swept through his orchard, only being stopped within a few feet of the house. The house of Mr. Wright was saved by burning a break, as was Mr. Brown’s house and lemon orchard.
    On Sunday afternoon a small fire developed in Salisbury Gully, but it was soon got under control; whilst this was being put out an urgent call for help came from “The Towers,” Mr. Berglund’s property. A large body of men were rushed out, and the fire was got under control before very much damage was done. On Sunday a fire, which had started on the Saturday in Cordner’s Gully, crossed the Officer rd., and threatened the orchard of Mr. F. Love, but it was kept out, and, with the exception of the loss of some fencing, not very much damage was done.   • 9 Mar 1933: Mr. D. McDonald, the mail carrier from here to Emerald, had a narrow escape from very serious injuries one day last week. He was making the return trip from Emerald on his motor bike, when on turning a sharp corner oh the road he collided with a large motor truck used in hauling pine logs.
    Mr. McDonald had some of his ribs broken, and the lung was ruptured. The motor bike and side car was completely rolled over with the impact, and the side car was smashed up.28

The main road to the farther heights beyond runs right past the allotments into which the reserve has been subdivided, and by means of passing coaches it is an easy matter to get to and from the station.
The allotments are being rapidly disposed of to those anxious to obtain at small expense a spot in the bush among the hills, whereon to pitch a holiday tent and enjoy a restful and unconventional vacation.
Fresh water is available, and facilities for preparing meals are provided in a centrally erected building.19

Place in Upper Beac*31 Oct 1979 Luke Place. In 1979 the Shire of Pakenham sought comments as to any early settlers, or history, pertaining to an unnamed road in Guys Hill from the Upper Beaconsfield Association and the Berwick-Pakenham Historical Society. Together they suggested that the road should bear the name of Luke. Council adopted the suggestion and conveyed their thanks to the UBA on 31 October 1979.70

In 1906 Edmund Luke, the first "artist and photographer" employed by "The Age" bought 55 acres of land between Emerald road and Cardinia Creek. He farmed this land, and on the top of the hill built his home "Montuna", which he named after his two older children, Montague and Una. This land is now part of the "Montuna Golf Course."
A few years later he bought 18 acres of land to the north of his farm and subdivided it into 25 lots of varying size, some 1 to 2 acres. The smallest ones were 10 house blocks along Emerald Road; all are shown on the Plan of the "E.T. Luke" Subdivision, dated March 1917. Two streets are shown on the plan, Montuna Grove, and Victor Avenue, the latter being named after his son who was serving in the armed forces.
The allotment on the corner of the reserve and facing Emerald Road, Luke gave to his daughter Lilly, who promptly built a skillion shed on the site, and became the first storekeeper of a convenience store. Australia Post used the store as a mail drop centre, where local residents could retrieve their mail, without having to go all the way to post offices at Beaconsfield or Upper Beaconsfield.
When Lilly married, her sister Una became the storekeeper.
In 1936 the storekeeper was a Mrs Guy, whose husband Herb, a builder, added to the building, making it a habitable dwelling, and turning the skillion into the present gable roof.
In 1942, Australia Post was approached with the request that the store become a licensed post office, which would enable Mrs. Guy to issue local residents with the food and petrol ration tickets that were needed during wartime. The request was granted, the post office being named "Guys Hill."
The store thus became a post office, convenience store, petrol station, news agency, and dwelling, and managed to trade profitably for many years. In February 1997, Pamela Trounsen and Steve Rimmer became the store proprietors. Their enthusiasm and friendly approach soon gained them much local respect and support, but the level of trading was not what they expected, and it was soon apparent there were difficulties.
Added to this, within a few months Pam developed a health problem which put most of the load on Steve. Pam says she was most grateful for the wonderful support they received from local people during this very stressful period. Sadly, since that time a series of adverse events, all outside their control, have resulted in the business being no longer viable and with great reluctance they were forced to close the store on May 11th.
Steve, an experienced chef, is now working at the Montuna Golf Club; several people have said that if you are lucky enough to be free at lunchtime, a visit there will be a very enjoyable experience. Pam is now in much better health, and facing the future with courage. Despite everything she still retains her delightful friendly smile.
On May 9th, Australia Post advertised for tenders for a Community Postal Agent/Licensed Post Office. Tenders closed on 18th May-the results are no yet known.71

    OBJECTS.     No better opportunity than the present is likely to present itself for entering into this business. The demand for films exceeds the supply. Picture theatres are paying well, and many of them are returning extremely handsome profits. The whole field of educative cinematography is practically unexplored. When one remembers the avidity with which either frankly scenic films of foreign countries or films showing dramatic subjects with a background of foreign countries are received by picture audiences here, it is fair to assume that films produced in this country under similar conditions will receive a similar reception to other countries. The picture film production business in Victoria is in its absolute infancy, and the promoters of the Vendors Syndicate felt so confident that there was a splendid opening to establish such a business that they inaugurated a syndicate and commenced to establish the business. One of the Vendors has a large farm of 60 acres at Beaconsfield available for the acting of dramatic subjects. The only matter that hampered the Syndicate was want of capital, and that is the only reason that the Syndicate has for proposing to form a Company and inviting the subscriptions of the public. That large capital is required and can be fearlessly invested in film production, and that the proposal of the promoters are based on sound business principles can be best illustrated by reference to undertakings and methods in other parts of the world.
    One company in the United States has a ranch located in wild mountainous country where wild west mountainous films are produced by quite an army of cow-boy actors. In one immense glass studio theatre in Italy a film was recently produced in which 400 persons appeared on the stage at one time.
    In battle scenes it is not an unusual thing to see hundreds of soldiers in full uniform and equipped in every detail acting some historical episode amidst natural surroundings.
    The Vistagraph company of America owns a fleet of vessels in constant use, conveying artists to and fro on the Hudson and St Lawrence Rivers.
    The sum of £2000 was paid out before the film known as "The Life of Christ" was completed, and the owners realised the handsome profit of £30,000 on that film alone. A large sized town has sprung up; with a still growing population of over 6000 employees solely engaged on Pathe Freres splendid productions on the Continent.
    In England nearly £400,000 is spent weekly in film production, and in America over £30,000,000 is invested solely in the moving picture business. The customers for these films are the picture theatres and shows. Although theatrical ventures by the score have failed, no picture theatre but is paying handsome dividends. The reasons are not far to seek, for there is no limit to the nature of the subjects dealt with. The services of the best artists can be employed, and the whole world can be levied upon to produce a night's amusement.
    The Commonwealth of Australia and Dominion of New Zealand are the happy hunting ground of wealthy tourists. Their unsurpassed beauty spots are unknown even to many of our own people. As subjects of cinematography they contain scenic treasures, practically untouched. The Promotors are convinced that with the development of the production of films of Australian scenes, a new era will be opened in cinematography, and that just at a time when perfection of these scenes can be reached, by the wonders of color cinematography. Pathe Freres have expressed their willingness not only to act as distributors for films on usual business terms, but to purchase outright films where they are subjects suitable for export. One of the syndicate has been for years preparing and collecting ideas for the profitable development of the moving picture business. His association with The Age Office, where he has been illustrating The Leader for the last eighteen years, is a guarantee of his ability in obtaining, selecting and making pictures, and of his enthusiasm and artistic ability. He has travelled throughout Australasia many times, and no one is better equipped with the valuable knowledge of how, when and where to obtain the typical and romantic scenes and incidents of Australian life, which are only waiting to be produced in moving picture form to find an outlet in an assured market for oversea as well as Australian rights. The staging of dramas and all details connected therewith will be in the able hands of Mr. Chas. Wheeler, who for seventeen years was the right-hand man in those masterly productions which made Mr. Bland Holt's name a household word throughout Australasia, assisted by capable actors who have for months been training themselves for the special requirements of picture work. A combination of expert workers is thus available for immediate work. These gentlemen have, during the last twelve mouths, expended much time in pioneering and thoroughly mastering every detail of the film producing business. They have opened up relations with the leading film producing firm above mentioned, and their proposals to produce distinctively Australian films have been received with eager welcome and an assurance that there is an unlimited market for such films. With the pioneering work done the company will take over the business, which is a going concern.
    What has been accomplished can be judged by the following extract from Pathes Weekly, under date 30th November, 1911:-
    "The Photo Vista Company have just produced the first Australian Comedy produced in Australia. The story is indescribably funny, and the situations original and unique. The whole work is Australian throughout, and is now in the hands of Pathe Freres for inspection. The same company have also completed a fine drama, entitled 'A Miner's Luck,' to be released in due course. Progress with the new venture has been so satisfactory that arrangements are now being made to release at least one drama of comedy weekly. Mr. "Chas. Wheeler (seventeen years with Bland Holt) will be the producer, and some fine stories are being put in hand."
    The rights of Mr. Ambrose Pratt's "Outlaws of Weddin Range" have been acquired from that, gentleman by the syndicate in consideration of 100 shares and 7½ per cent royalty.
    The vendors will accept deferred shares, to which these conditions are attached:-
    1. In the event of the company being wound up the deferred shares will not participate in any distribution of assets until subscribing members of the company have been paid 20/ in the pound in respect of the capital paid up by them.
    2. These shares will carry no dividend until subscribing members have been paid six pounds per centum on the amount of capital paid up by them from time to time. Thereafter deferred shareholders shall receive six pounds per centum if the profits allow. Any profits in excess of these amounts paid by way of dividend shall be paid to subscribing and deferred shareholders pari passu.
    The Manager of the Syndicate will enter into a long engagement with the Company as Manager, and will undertake to devote his whole time and attention to the business of the company, and also will make suitable portion of his property above mentioned at Beaconsfield available to the company for film production on a long lease at a merely nominal rental.
    Mr. Wheeler will take charge of the stage production, and generally act as Stage Manager. The Vendors only ask for so much as will purchase the assets in hand at a valuation. For their work, expenditure and losses in founding the concern, training the staff of artists and assistants, and obtaining the expert experience they now have, they are prepared to accept shares on the fore going conditions.
    In accordance with the Companies Act 1910 of Victoria the following information is embodied in the Prospectus:-
    (a) The draft Memorandum of Association showing the names, descriptions, and addresses of such persons as have up to the present signed such Memorandum and the number of shares up to the present subscribed for by them appear at the end hereof and form part of this Prospectus. The only founders or management on deferred shares are the abovementioned 3500 shares to be issued to the Vendors.
    (b) The number of shares to be fixed by the Articles as the qualification of a Director shall be 100, and the remuneration of the directors shall be determined by the company in General Meeting.
    (c) The names, descriptions and addresses of the Proposed Directors are:- The Hon. THOMAS LANGDON. M.L.A., Kerferd-road, Albert Park. FRANK BUCKHURST, Esq., Flinders-street, Melbourne, Chemist.
    (d) The minimum subscription on which the Directors may proceed to allotment is 4000 shares. and the amount payable on application and allotment respectively is 2/6.
    (e) The number and amount of shares which it has been agreed shall be issued as fully paid up otherwise than in cash is the abovementioned 3500 shares only.
    (f) The Vendors are the Photo Vista Film Production Syndicate, of Cromwell-buildings, Bourke-street, Melbourne, and the names and addresses of the members of that Syndicate can be obtained on application to Messrs. Ford, Aspinwall and De Guchy, solicitors, 128 Queen-street, Melbourne. The amount payable in cash to the Vendors shall be £500 and the aforesaid 3500 shares shall be issued to them.
    (g) The amount payable as purchase money in cash and shares for the aforesaid property is as aforesaid, no part of which is payable for goodwill.
    (h) No amount is payable as commission for subscribing or agreeing to subscribe or procuring or agreeing to procure subscriptions for any shares of the Company, except a commission of 2½ per cent, as brokerage in respect of shares actually issued.
    (i) The amount or estimated amount of preliminary expenses, including, such brokerage, cost of advertising, legal expenses incidental to the promotion, prospectus and registration of the Company, is £400.
    (j) Other than as set out in (i) above no amount has been paid or is intended to be paid by the Company to any Promoter.
    (k) Except a verbal arrangement made with Mr. Ambrose Pratt for the cinematograph rights of "The Outlaws of Weddin Range" as above, no contract has been entered into on behalf of the Company.
    (l) No Auditors have been appointed.
    Dated this 22th day of December, 1911. The above Abridged Prospectus does not fully comply with all the provisions of the Companies Act 1910, but printed Prospectus and Memorandum of Association can be received on application to the Secretary, or the Solicitors to the Company.93

  • 30 Aug 1917: Montuna Poultry Farm Beaconsfield. The efficacy of expert advice is well illustrated in the progress of two youths at the Montana Poultry Farm, Beaconsfield, where, with very limited capital, in the space of three years, a well-equipped and successful egg-producing business has been established. Acting entirely under the advice of Mr A. Hart, the Government Poultry Expert, they commenced operations with a 240-eggs in cubator, twice filled with selected eggs from Mr Perry's well-known Murrumbeena pens of pure Padmon W.L. stock. For the first effort the remarkable result of nearly 90 per cent. was achieved. The second year was a repetition, with similar results. The third year some Moritz stud males were obtained from Mr Walter Bayles, and, with three more incubators at work, equal success was obtained. The soundness of Mr Hart's advice is demonstrated by running fourth in the current winter test at Burnley, six other birds under similar conditions doing equally well at Beaconsfield. From about 370 birds they are obtaining up to 300 eggs daily, for which highest market rates are obtained privately. It is worthy of note that all buildings have been erected by themselves from timber cut on the property, which is also equipped with a small saw-milling plant. There is also a home-made water wheel, which distributes fresh running creek water where required. Water-heated brooder houses and roomy pens from plans supplied by Mr Hart are set amid most picturesque surroundings, well worthy of a visit. An electric lighting plant has just been installed, and for next season some 200 single pens are to be erected, to test out under Burnley con ditions. When one sees what has been accomplished with the combination of energy and sound advice it is self-evident that success in poultry farming is within reach of all who care to make an honest effort in this direction.98
  • 9 Nov 1918: Messrs. Luke Bros., of the Montuna Poultry Farm, Beaconsfield, are doing exceptionally well wtih their White Leghorns in the Burnley and Colac egg laying competitions. The Montuna strain was founded from the yards of Mr. W. Perry, of Murrumbeena, and an infusion of blood from Mr. W. Bayles. This year the Montuna farm has introduced fresh blood from the Hazledean yards of Mr. E. A. Underwood, of Williamstown.99

  • 14 Mar 1938: Mr. Edmund Thomas Luke, who died at his home at Beaconsfield on Saturday, aged 74 years, was the first photographer and artist on the staff of the "Age" and the "Leader." He had been an employee for 43 years when he retired three years ago. About 30 years ago he designed an issue of stamps which was accepted by the New Zealand Government. He was official photographer with the party which inspected sites for the Federal Capital. He has left five sons and three daughters. The funeral will leave his home at 3 p.m. to-day for the Berwick Cemetery.101
  • 15 Mar 1938: MR. E. T. LUKE. The remains of E T. Luke the first artist and photographer associated with "The Age" and "The Leader" staff, who died at his home, Beaconsfield, on Saturday, were interred at Berwick Cemetery yesterday, following a short service at the home. The pall bearers included five sons, a son-in-law and Messrs. A. Harbor and J. Adamson. Mr C. E. Savers (editor of "The Leader"), represented Messrs. David Syme and Co. Messrs. H. Alston (horticultural editor), C. E. Cork (engineering department) and J. W. Hosking (pictorial) represented "The Age" and "The Leader" staffs, of which Mr. Luke had been a member for 43 years. Mr. E. Rouse, of Kodak Pty. Ltd., was also present. The service at the graveside was conducted by Rev. E. L. Panelli. Mr. J. Grant, of Berwick, had charge of the funeral arrangements.102
  • 8 Apr 1938: Administration is being applied for in the estate of Edmund Thomas Luke, of Montuna, Upper Beaconsfield, retired artist and photographer, who died on March 12 leaving estate valued at £2,042. The widow and eight children are the next of kin.103

Anecdote*1909Charles Kelvey PEARSON (b.c.1827; christened 4 Jul 1827 at Thorne, Yorkshire, England; d.28 Mar 1909 (#523) at Berwick, Victoria, Australia, of old age, heart failure, aged 83). Buried: 30 Mar 1909, Geelong New General Cemetery. (parents: Thomas PEARSON & Rebecca KELVEY). Had been in Victoria 58 years at the time of his death. In his obiturary, Berwick paper, 1909, it is suggested that he was: “.. an officer in the military party which stormed the famous Eureka Stockade”, Ballarat, December 1854, over strife in the Goldfields. Was visited by two distinguished visitors in 1881, Charles KELVEY and T.W. BROOKES. Catherine Lee HOARE gave birth to a boy at about this time and the child is named Kelvey Brookes Herbert PEARSON, in honour of the guests, who later sent the works of Sir Walter Scott in commemoration of their visit and the honour of having a child take their names. Was sent a gift of The New Revised Version of the New Testament from Ann Rebecca BAUER, his sister, then living in Cromwell, London, at age 78; dated 17 April 1907. Inventor of a Lever Escarpment, used successfully to clear Lake Wendoree at Ballarat, Victoria, to dredge, lift and load the bullrushes that threatened to prevent the use of boating on the lake, for which he won a prize. Prize was 5,000 pounds. Apparently left his second wife and children around this time. Occupation: Watchmaker and Jeweller, Avoca, by 1856. Apprenticed in watchmaking for seven years, in England. Foreman at Rothams, London, England, a Watch factory, run by his uncle, Charles Grant KELVEY and his partener, Mr. BROOKES, who handled jewellery and gems and dealt with India and the Raja of Sarawak, Borneo. A nephew of Mr. BROOKES went to the aid of the Rajas in quelling a rebellion and pirateering, fighting the pirates who stole from the gold trade between India and England, for which he was awarded land and became the White Raj of Sarawak.

Arrived at Hobson’s Bay, Victoria, Australia, Dec 1852, ship “SYRIA”, at the age of 28, accompanied by Eliza, 28, Selina MASON, aged 16, Eliza’s sister, Frederick, 3, Charles, 2, and Fanny, a baby. Cost of the voyage: 126 Pounds. Selina married Valentine Nott MOGG, a close associate of Charles Kelvey Pearson. Mogg was a Squatter and owned a number of pastoral lisences in North-Eastern and Central Victoria. Acted as a Gold-buyer during the Victorian Gold Rush for the Miners. Armed himself with two pistols and two horses, running the guntlet of robbers along the road to Melbourne having purchased the gold from the Miners as such a price as to allow for a good profit. Twice he was shot off his horse and left for dead; robbed many times. Colonel of a Regiment of soldiers from England. His son Kelvey Brooks Herbert (Frank) writes that his father is a cousin of Lord Charles William De La Poer BERESFORD (b. 10 Feb 1846 at Philipstown, Glebe, Louth, Ireland; d. ?), Admiral of the British Navy, served in the Antipodes, amongst many other places. C.K.P. and his family moved from Geelong to Avoca, Victoria between the birth of Maud , 1855 and Edward, 1856. Charles Kelvey Pearson is shown on the first Town Plan of Avoca, 1856 as holding two blocks of land in the main street, adjacent to V.N. Mogg. CKP also owned the Avoca Hotel in High Street. He was elected to the Municiple Council of Avoca, 1859-1866. Shareholder,Avoca Gold Mining Association which operated on the DeepLead Avoca. He purchased 78 shares sold at Ten pounds each. Returned to Geelong to settle in 1868. Shortly after the move, Elizabeth died, June 1869. He set up a Watchmaking business on Moorabool St., Geelong and won Gold Medals at Melbourne Exhibitions and abroad. His sons, Frederick, Edward, Valentine and Albert were also Watchmakers. Frederick was a Music Teacher as well as a Watchmaker.Charles Kelvey Pearson is known as a prolific writer. He wrote for, and corresponded with, The Geelong Advertiser. By the early 1900’s, he and his second wife, Catherine were living in Fitzroy, Melbourne. After Catherine’s death in 1906, Charles Kelvey moved to “Montuna”, Beaconsfield, 50 Km S-E of Melbourne to live with his daughter, Ida Florence LUKE. Ida lived on this property until her death in 1960, aged 98. In the last years of his life, C.K.P. dedicated himself to his favorite hobby, gardening.----Exerps from a text by John Harrowfield.4

    It is with deep regret that we record the death or Mrs. Ida Florence Luke, which occurred suddenly at her home, Montuna, Beaconsfield, last Sunday. Mrs. Luke had been ill for only a short time. She was 98 years of age.
    Her husband, the late Mr. E. T. Luke, predeceased her 23 years ago. Mrs. Luke had lived at Beaconsfleld for the past 48 years. She had eight children. She is survived by Victor, Monte, Una, Bert and Vera.
    The funeral to Berwick Cemetery took place last Tuesday.31

LUKE. — The Funeral of the late MONTE LUKE, of Clifton Gardens, will leave St. Clements Church of England, corner Raglan and Canrobert streets, Mosman, Sydney, TOMORROW, after a service commencing at noon. At the conclusion of the service a cremation will take place at the Northern Suburbs Crematorium.5 
Note* Monte by Bruce KELVEY: Edmund Thomas Luke and Ida Florence Pearson had 8 children. The eldest son Monte Luke like his father became a photographer spending most of his life in Sydney (Monte Luke Studios in Castlereagh Street). He was rather well known and the name of the studio is still used. As far as my father is aware, he did not emigrate to NZ and most likely is buried in Sydney.
Monte only had one child … a son Peter who was also reasonably well known given that he was the co-founder of the Cruising Yacht Club of Sydney and one of the original competitors in the first Sydney to Hobart yacht race in 1945.4 
Anecdote*Monte Luke, the Man & the Studio
He was a bit of a dasher, and apparently quite a charmer, but Monte Luke will always be remembered as the man who captured the people of his city, their life and times, through a camera lens.
From the early 1920s to the Great Depression, World War Two and into the nineteen-fifties, Monte led from the front as the Sydney photographic studio that carried his name focused on the famous and not-so-famous, the rich and poor, sportsmen and business chiefs, artists and actors.
Charles Robert Montague Luke, who would become known to one and all as Monte, was born in Geelong, Victoria, in 1885. His father, Edmund Thomas Luke, was a pioneer newspaper photographer in Melbourne and passed the skills of the trade on to his son. Monte’s first job was as a messenger and mixer of chemical compounds for the well known suppliers of photographic equipment, Baker & Rouse.
Tall, handsome and out-going, the younger Luke was initially more interested in a career on the stage. At nineteen he joined a travelling dramatic company and spent the next decade touring Australia and overseas, often playing romantic or heroic roles. Throughout this nomadic part of his life, he always had a camera handy and took numerous portraits of his fellow thespians.
He married a Ballarat girl, Elsie Speed, who would later take over management of his studio. After being appointed official photographer for then theatrical kings J.C. Williamson Ltd, he made three silent movies for them; For Australia (1915), Within the Law (1916) and Seven Keys to Baldpate (1916).
In 1919 Monte went into partnership with the Falk Studio, which was located within the historic Strand Arcade in Sydney. The Falk Studio was then well-established as one of Sydney’s most renowned photographic studios, having been commissioned to take the official portraits of the Duke and Duchess of York when the royal couple came to Australia for the Federation celebrations of 1901.
Soon Monte set up his own business, also situated in the Strand, in the old studios of another well-known Sydney photographer L W Appleby. He specialised in social portraits and weddings, and also gained recognition for his work in advertising.
Monte was invited to join the influential ‘Sydney Camera Circle’ in 1921 and many meetings of this elite group of photographers, which had been formed in 1916 with the objective of promoting a distinctive Australian style of pictorial photography, were held in his Studio. Two of the most prominent founding members of the Circle were Harold Cazneaux – often described as the father of modern Australian photography – and Cecil Bostock, later the tutor of Max Dupain, who would go on to international acclaim for his black and white Sydney beach scenes, landscapes and architectural studies.
The Camera Circle moved local photography beyond the low-toned British style of print that was then the norm by introducing, as the visionary Cazneaux put it, ‘truly Australian sunshine effects’. Monte embraced this new direction and his light-filled landscapes took their place alongside his striking portraits as his signature. A lavish book of these landscapes, Under Sunny Skies, was published in the 1930s and the photographs were exhibited in the United States and Europe, winning a string of prizes.
But it was Monte’s portraits – principally weddings and corporate, coupled with those from the arts, politics and sport – that paid the bills. While his good friend Cazneaux chronicled the changing face of Sydney, Monte recorded the faces of its people. He also accompanied another friend, Walter Burley Griffin, on the acclaimed architect’s journey to survey the site which is today Canberra, the national capital. Monte recorded that historic mission with what was even then regarded as an ‘old’ movie camera.
In a way, he was following his father’s footsteps, for in 1902 Edmund Luke had accompanied the Senate delegation that toured various sites in New South Wales and Victoria, trying to determine where Australia’s new capital should be situated. A number of Edmund’s photographs of that expedition are held by the National Library in Canberra, including photographs of the senators at various sites around what is the ACT, from Lake George in the north to Dalgety in the south.
Back in Sydney, the Monte Luke Studio built its popularity and reputation for excellence largely on its portrait work. Over many decades, Monte and his long-time associate Frank Froud recorded a fascinating range of subjects, from royalty to famous locals and international theatrical sporting and political personalities.
Among these were the Duke and Duchess of York who came to Australia for the official opening of Parliament House in Canberra in 1927, and the Queen and Prince Philip when they toured Australia in 1954. Prominent political figures include Governors-General Lord Donrossil and Sir William Slim.
There were celebrities such as Gladys Moncrieff, known to her public as ‘our Glad’ and described by J C Williamson as ‘Australia’s queen of musical comedy’, Anna Pavlova, considered to be the greatest ballerina of her time, another local star Nellie Stewart, and the prominent artist William Dobell. Many debutantes, businessmen, brides and families also flocked to the Studio.
Over the decades the studio relocated several times, to Castlereagh Street and later York Street, before settling on its current location in Barrack Street, not far from Circular Quay.
Into the 1950s Monte turned the running of the business over to his ‘right hand man’ Frank Froud, who had been with him since 1924. After Monte’s death in 1962, Froud stayed with the studio until 1989 – sixty-four years of service – when the present owner and operator Keith Friendship took over.
Keith brought great photographic skills and a perceptive eye to enhance the already enviable traditions of the Monte Luke Studio. He also brought a similar passion for personal attention to each client’s session. As did Monte and Frank before him, Keith treats each assignment as a totally unique experience – from the point of view of both subject and photographer.
Almost a century after the studio’s foundation, Keith continues to make the Monte Luke name and history, along with its wide array of photographic work, an integral part of the Sydney scene.
‘Monte Luke was one of Sydney’s great characters from what was a great era of Australian photography, and should be remembered as such’.

Luke Bros., of the Montuna Poultry Farm, Beaconsfield, who are running in the front rank in several Victorian egg-laying competitions with White Leghorns, have secured a special stud cockerel from Mr. E. His name is listed on the Honour Board at the Upper Beaconsfield RSL.1

  • 3 Jun 1916: GERMANS "A BIT OF A NUISANCE."
    Lance-Corporal Victor Luke, in a letter to his mother at Beaconsfield, gives an account of his doings in France. He states that the unit to which he is attached was given a nice position, and was getting settled down, when the Germans shelled them out. It was most exciting, and, fortunately, no one was hurt. The Germans were "a bit of a nuisance," as snipers played round the Australian position night and day, and the machine guns were active. The enemy on one occasion burnt their hut down, and then bombarded them with shrapnel in a hope of getting them as they ran for shelter, but they all "hopped" safely into a dug out. In the scramble he lost all he possessed, including his watch and curios.12
  • 25 Aug 1917: Illustrated: MODEL OF PRINCE KARL'S AEROPLANE. (Brought Down by An Australian at Bapaume During the British Offensive.) Planes and tail made from actual parts of the engine case, and the body is a cartridge from one of the machine guns with which the wrecked aeroplane was equipped. Made and sent by Lance Corporal Victor Luke, formerly of Beaconsfield.13
  • 10 Jul 1919: Beaconsfield. -o- A social was held in the Public hall on Friday night to welcome home several "diggers" who had recently returned. The hall was tastefully decorated with gum leaves and flags of the Allies. Almost 200 people were present, and everyone thoroughly enjoyed the evening. Cr Martin officiated as chairman and welcomed the boys home on behalf of the residents of Beaconsfield. Cr Anderson also welcomed them back, and said the council would stand by the soldiers and see that they got a fair deal. A short musical programme arranged by the secretary (Mr Williams) was greatly appreciated, the following contributing:-Mrs F. Richardson, Miss G. May, Miss E. Anderson, Messrs Kerr, Paxton, and Meekin. Mrs Cliff and Miss Williams played the accompaniments. The boys got a very warm reception when they were asked to come on the platform to receive a gold medal each, given by the residents. Cr Groves, M.L.A., made the presentations, and in a stirring speech, roused great enthusiasm. Following are the names of those who received medals: -Sgt G. Grant, Cpls C. Whiteside and Barnett, Ptes Luke, Bryant, R. Adamson, Jack Adamson, J. B. Adamson, M.M., Warmbrunn, Brown, R. Williams, F. F. Williams, Pettit, Sweeney, and M. McNaughton. Cpl Whiteside responded on behalf of the"diggers." Supper was then handed round, after which dancing was indulged in until the wee sma' hours.   • 25 Mar 1911: A peculiar accident at Upper Beaconsfield resulted in a youth named Herbert Luke having his leg broken on 17th, inst. Whilst on the road with his own dog another animal made a sudden attack on it, and a fierce fight ensued. A horse ridden by a lady shied at the fighting dogs, and with its hind foot struck the youth, who was endeavoring to separate the combatants, on the calf of the leg, and, besides making a large flesh wound, snapped the shin bone.23
  • 9 Mar 1933: BEACONSFIELD UPPER. The local Bush Fire Brigade got their first call last Monday afternoon, when they were summoned to “Pine Lodge,” Mr. J. Coucher’s property at Quamby. When they arrived, they found that Mr. Bert Luke, one of the brigade officers, had organised the local residents, and had held the fire in check. After half an hour’s work the fire was put out, and not much damage was done. About five o’clock the brigade was out again, a fire having started in Mrs. Brown’s property, and threatened to wipe out the township. For about an hour over forty men fought hard to prevent the fire from crossing the main road. Their efforts were successful, although the fire had crossed the road in two or three places it was put out before it had time to get a good start. Fortunately the wind changed, and then the danger was past. The brigade kept a man on watch during the night to give the alarm if the fire started again. A quantity of fencing was destroyed, and all the sheds belonging, to Mrs. Brown were burned, and her house had a narrow escape. James Joseph Cowcher24

My grandfather was the third son to take up photography. My grandmother worked as a colourist at Monty Luke Studios and my dad assumes they must have met when his father was visiting his older brother Monty in Sydney. They were married in Sydney and subsequently moved to Mount Gambier and then to Warrnambool before moving back to settle in Bentleigh (south eastern suburbs of Melbourne). It was around this time that my dad arrived on the scene in 1936.
Unfortunately I never knew either of my paternal grandparents. My grandfather died whilst they were en route to Sydney. They were visiting my grandmother’s relatives in Wollongong when he suffered an acute asthma attack. He was only 58 at the time. My dad said that his mother never fully recovered from the shock of this loss and due to an existing heart condition, her health slowly deteriorated. She passed away in 1969 a year before I was born.1 
Note How Ana Kelvey LUKE got his name by Bruce Kelvey LUKE
My dad informs me that his father “Ana Kelvey Luke” also used his second name. The Ana came about courtesy of the fact that he was born on 26 January which the Australian Natives’ Association (ANA) was promoting as a national holiday in the pre Federation era. The ANA was initially formed as a friendly society to provide medical, sickness and funeral benefits to Australians born of European descent. It subsequently became a keen advocate from the 1880s of federation of the Australian colonies and of celebrating a national holiday on 26 January. I gather Edmund and Ida were strong supporters of federation for them to name their son “Ana”.1

The "Kath Roberts Reserve" in Beaconsfield was so named by the Pakenham Shire as a compliment to an old and well respected resident of the town. Mrs Roberts who now lives in Berwick, is a charming, vibrant lady who has very good recall, and who has kindly provided the following information:
After she married her husband Herman in 1924, she assisted him in running a General Store which was on the corner of Wood Street and Beaconsfield Avenue. Soon after war broke out in 1939, the Roberts left the store and took over the Post Office at Beaconsfield.
In the early 40's, several pensioners from the area now known as Guy's Hill, asked if they could collect their pensions from the store there, rather than go all the way to Beaconsfield. This was arranged by the Roberts.
A little later when petrol rationing was introduced, a further request was made that the tickets for petrol also be made available at the store. This however, was only possible if the store was made a branch post office. Letters were written by local people to the Postmaster General's Department requesting this and about 1941, the request was granted.
The Department then wrote to Mrs Roberts asking her to submit suitable names for the new Post Office.
Mrs Roberts recalls "the storekeepers were a delightfully odd couple named Herb and Eadie Guy and the only name I could think of which would be suitable was Guy's Hill".
Mrs Roberts submitted only the one name and it was accepted by the Department. She admits "the Lukes were rather upset and wrote to the Department". The Luke family had built and run the original store in 1930, as well as making the Montuna Golf Course which opened in 1927. At the time there were also some letters to the papers and local controversy.
In 1981 the name Guy's Hill was officially recognised by the Shire following a motion put by Councillor Keith Ewenson, who on behalf of the Council made enquiries locally and received the impression that the name was generally acceptable. He noted a local opinion that "it would cost money to change it". Older names for the area are Inebriates Hill, Middle Beaconsfield and Lukes Hill.
A mystery remains - who were the Guys. There appears little known about them apart from the fact they had the store, possibly less than two years - and that Mrs Guy ran the store and he may have been a builder. If anyone can add to this, please contact the Editor.15

  • 27 Apr 1928: BOTHER ABOUT A CAR - PLAINTIFF PAYS COSTS TOOK COMPLAINT TO RUSSELL STREET Herbert Stanley Guy of Wells road, Carrum proceeded against F. Taylor, of Bay street, Frankston, for the payment of 35/ at the Frankston Police Court on Tuesday. The claim was for a milk can owned by plain tiff, which, plaintiff contended defen dant would not return. Plaintiff said he bought four cans at a clearing sale at "Yamala," Frankston, on March 30. When he went for the cans he found one mis sing and was informed that Taylor had taken it. He went to defendant's place and was told defendant was away. A week later he wrote and asked that the can be returned to his address. He saw the police at Frankston and was told to go out and see Taylor about the can. He gave 15/ for the four cans, but the one taken was the best one. He claimed 35/ as that was the price he would have to pay for a new one. Taylor had given him a shower of abuse. He doubted if he could get the can if he went for it. Senior Constable Elliott said he rang Taylor when plaintiff came to him and was told the can was there and that plaintiff could get it if he called. Defendant had borrowed the can to bring home some milk. The can was now two miles nearer plaintiff's home than when he bought it. Plaintiff admitted that he had been to the police at Russell street about the matter. The bench dismissed the case with £1/1// costs against complainant.21
  • 19 Jul 1930: DEATH OF COW DAMAGES AWARDED. At Frankston Police Court on Tuesday before Mr. W. C. Wilson, P.M., Herbert Stanley Guy, of Carrum Downs, dairyman farmer, claimed £20 damages from Arthur Nelson, of Wonthaggi, sanitary contractor. The claim was for loss sustained by Guy through the death of a cow which was injured by a car driven by Nelson on Frankston-Dandenong road on May 2 and had to be destroyed. Mr. F. B. Barlow appeared for claimant and Mr Prendergast for defendant. Edith Elizabeth Guy, wife of plaintiff, said she was driving a herd of cows from her home to a paddock on the other side of the road. Defendant approached at a high speed and one cow was struck by the car. It was pushed for some distance along the road in front of the car, which passed over its hind legs. The car did not stop although she called out to the driver, several times. She took the number of the car and her husband informed the police. Nelson said the cows left the road as he approached and made a passage for him. He slowed down to two or three miles an hour. One cow ran in front of the car, which stopped immediately. The cow got up and walked away. He stopped for a short time but could see no one in charge of the cows. As the cow did not appear to be injured he drove on. Mr. Wilson said he did not believe the evidence for the defence. A verdict was given for complainant for £14, with £5/19/6 costs. Edith Elizabeth Guy22
