Regimental number 105 - Church of England - Carpenter - Private - 3rd Pioneer Battalion, Machine Gun Section - Unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A62 Wandilla on 6 June 1916 - Returned to Australia 31 March 1919
Military Medal: 'At 4.45 a.m. on the morning of the 8th August, 1918, immediately east of HAMEL, No. 105 R. HAYBALL was in charge of the first party to go forward along the main HAMEL CERISY Road to make repairs necessary to enable guns and traffic to get along at as early an hour as possible, in order to successfully carry on the advance. Sergeant HAYBALL got his party onto the section of the road for which he was responsible, shortly after the Infantry had advanced, although working quite out in the open with no shelter from heavy machine gun fire and hostile shelling. He showed great coolness and courage under most trying circumstances, and so encouraged his men by his personal energy and example that he had the roads in a fit state for all traffic, well up to schedule time, and was to a large extent, responsible for the successful completion of the works.'

Note1888 "Hayball Bros. North Brighton. This firm of builders, timber merchants, sawmill owner and co. consists of Messrs Edwin, Robert & William Hayball, all of Victorian birth, and conducts its business in New St. Brighton. The business of builders was initiated by the late Mr Robert Hayball Snr., from whom it descended to the above-mentioned sons. Some years ago, owing to their enormous consumption of timber, it was deemed necessary to open a timber yard, the business of which has increased to such an extent that there are few if any to equal it in the city of Melbourne. A great number of men are employed in the joiners shop, sawmills, timber yards and upon the numerous buildings in course of erection by this firm. It also does a large business in ironmongery, and owns the Brighton steam saw, moulding and planing mills, also being interested in some of the most extensive up-country sawmills. The office of this firm is connected to the Melbourne exchange by telephone."2

  • 19 Mar 1927: Brighton's Keeper. Hayball's Long Association With District
It is appropriate that the name of Hayball should figure in the successes of the Brighton Cricket Club. The Hayball family have been resident in Brighton since 1842, when the grandfather of Roy Hayball, who at present is the wicket-keeper of the Brighton first eleven, settled in the district. Harry Hayball, an uncle of Roy, and a barrister practising in Melbourne, at an earlier date also kept for the seasiders.
Roy Hayball first played cricket with the Brighton Congregational Church, in the Brighton District Cricket Association. The advent of the war broke up this team, and after service with the A.I.F. Hayball took up residence in Beaconsfield, Gippsland. By a strange coincidence it was while a resident of this district that Brighton "discovered" him. Roy was captain of the Dandenong-Berwick country cricket week team, and during the course of the programme Dandenong-Berwick played on the Brighton ground. The officials of Brighton then discovered Hayball. He returned from the country to take up a partnership with his uncle, the late William Hayball, in the timber business so well known in and around Brighton.
Joining Brighton he became the wicketkeeper for the first eleven, and with one slight break has occupied the position since. Hayball is not regarded seriously as a batsman, but is a very safe keeper. He has two very awkward bowlers to take in Truman and Lisle Nagel, and the success of these men is a testimony to the methods of the keeper.
Apart from cricket, Hayball is fond of billiards, and often invites members of the Brighton eleven to his home to play. It is in little outings of this type that a feeling of good fellowship is formed between the members of the team.
The gun also holds a fascination for Hayball, and he is never happier than when roaming the countryside in search of game.

  • 30 Mar 1899: WEDDINGS. MR. SYDNEY CASEY TO MISS VIOLET REID. A CHARMING wedding was celebrated on 22nd March at All Saints' Church, St. Kilda, when Mr. Sydney Casey, youngest son of the late Dr. Casey, of Brighton, was married to Miss Violet Reid, youngest daughter of the late Mr. J. Reid and Mrs. Reid, of Tabratong, N.S.W. The decorations were very handsome, consisting of palms, ferns and white flowers, forming arches and festoons everywhere. The bride and bridegroom stood under a beautiful string of wedding bells. The bride was given away by her brother, and wore a beautiful gown of rich pearl satin, deeply flounced with chiffon, and embroidered with pearls and ivory applique; court train, ruched chiffon. A spray of bridal blossom and heather draped the front of the skirt; the bodice was richly trimmed with chiffon and lace applique; sleeves of tucked chiffon. The tulle veil was caught with orange blossoms. The beautiful posey was composed of tiger lilies, azaleas and soft ferns. The two bridesmaids, Miss Violet Brodribb and Miss Evelyn Douglas, were smartly gowned in white muslin over white glace silk slips. The skirts were trimmed with flounces of muslin, edged with lace. The bodices were finished with deep lace collars of satin duchesse, tucked and edged with point lace. Fichus of muslin and lace were knotted, and the ends tucked into a satin belt at the side. Pretty toques of vieux rose velvet and black plumes were worn. They carried ebony canes, decorated with La France roses and autumn leaves. Gold chain bracelets, studded with turquoise and crystal, and blue enamelled hearts depending, were presented by the bridegroom. Mr. H. B. Paterson, of "Boorara," Queensland, acted as best man, and Mr. Gay Clark as groomsman.
A reception and wedding tea were afterwards held at "Shipley House," the home of Mr. and Mrs. R. Casey. The decorations were most artistic, consisting of white marguerites, pale pink Tecoma, grasses, ferns and palms. Mrs. Reid (the bride's mother) wore a handsome gown of black brocade and peach satin facings; dainty bonnet of black and silver. Mrs. Alan Mackay (the bride's sister) wore royal blue and white shot silk, dark velvet trimmings; black chip hat, with crimson velvet and plumes. Mr. and Mrs. Casey left later on for Heidelberg, spending the race week in Sydney, then on to their station home, "Newstead," Queensland. The bride travelled in a gown of fawn voile over buttercup silk, trimmings of chenille and cream ...

The contracting parties were Mr. Robert Wilson Burns, youngest son of the late Captain Burns, of Glasgow, Scotland, and Miss Inez Fisher, eldest daughter of Mr. T. C. Fisher, of "Goodrest," Upper Beaconsfield. The bride entered the church on the arm of her father, who subsequently gave her away, the organ playing "The voice that breathed o'er Eden." The celebrant was the Rev. George Tait. The bridesmaids were the Misses Litton and Fisher, the latter sister of the bride, the former, a daughter of Major Litton, of Brighton. The groomsmen were Mr. Stanley Fisher and Mr. Cecil Mathews The dresses were all pretty and effective, especially that of bride, who wore a travelling dress and hat en suite. The flowers carried by the bride and bridesmaids were of a especial feature, they being exquisite shower bouquets, the work of Mr Ireland, florist. The bride's cake was from the well- known caterer, Mr Vine. On leaving the church, Mendolsohn's Wedding March was played. Later on Mr. and Mrs. Burns left for their honeymoon. The presents were numerous and very handsome.7

The whole contrivance adds but 1lb. to the weight of the machine, and has been proved by actual experience to be effective and simple by a host of famous riders, including T. A. Edge of 1,000 mile fame, and such local experts as Geo. R. Broadbent, T. Clement Fisher, J. R. Cathie, and E. H. Lenne. The universal verdict is that it gives no trouble and does not get out of order, while many declare its invention to be second in importance only to that of the pneumatic tyre itself.

  • 28 Nov 1896: THE WORLD ON WHEELS. There was a big crowd at the St. Kilda meeting last Saturday, and though the racing was very fair in quality far too much "stiff" riding prevailed. The heats, too, were most uncomfortably crowded, which resulted in falls more or less dangerous. Indeed, in the last race of the day—the Five Miles International—eight or ten of the competitors came to grief and presented a tangled mess of men and machines. Clem Fisher, the most unlucky rider (next to Dave Kirk), had a very bad fall along with several others, and appeared to be suffering from his arm. It was at first given out that a fracture had been sustained, but all were pleased to learn that it was nothing more serious than a dislocation of the thumb.35

  • 11 Mar 1897: That good specimen of a racing cyclist, Clem. Fisher, has made up his mind to retire from the track owing to repeated accidents. Clem was at one time champion of New Zealand, and has been a man to reckon with in his Australian career on the path. Ill luck, however, has dogged him for the past two years, and during that time, whenever a catastrophe occurred, he has been in it. Always riding well, and generally securing a place, he has not won anything of consequence. "Now," says Clem, "I intend to give it best and reduce my medical expenses." He retires with a most creditable record and the good opinion of all his contemporaries of the wheel.37
  • 24 Jun 1897: CYCLING NOTES. The professional cyclists turned up in force at St. Kilda on Saturday to battle for tinpot trophies (says an Australian exchange). The meeting was a benefit for Dave Kirk, whose spine was dislocated while training last November . . . Kirk, who nets about £30 from the affair, was a most unlucky cyclist. A rider of top rank, he never won a decent race, for he fell every time he started, and took several weeks getting over his injuries each time. And he fell once too often—his tire suddenly slipped from the rim and down he came. After six months in hospital, he comes out on crutches possibly a cripple for life. Also, as his accident took place on the training track, he was robbed of the generous response from the public that a big dramatic smash during a race would have elicited. Clem Fisher, the long Maorilander, was another man who used to fall in nearly every start, but Kirk's misfortune came as a warning, and Fisher now looks on.38
  • 24 Jun 1897: Mr. T. C. Fisher, better knovn among cyclists as "Clem," has concluded his engagement with the Victorian Sports Co., and accepted a position as traveller for the Austral Cycle Agency.39
  • 6 Jan 1898: Mr. Clem. Fisher, late of the Austral Cycle Agency and Victorian Sports Co., took his departure from these shores on Monday last per s.s Omi Maru. He goes to the East on important business in connection with the cycling trade. From what is known at present it may be stated that his errand is likely to be very profitable, and by-and-bye we may have further information to communicate in regard to the possibilities of trade in regions "contagious," as the Irishman said, to our own shores. Mr. Fisher came to Victoria with the reputation of a first-class rider— a reputation which be worthily upheld on the Victorian cycle tracks. But, last season, he was the most unlucky racing man in the list. He figured in nearly every big smash; when he survived he was always fourth. Finally he secceeded in hurting himself so seriously in a race at Sydney that he was compelled to withdraw from the path. As a racing cyclist he was popular among his confreres and, as a business man, highly esteemed by his employers and the public. We wish him every succees in his new career.40
  • 28 May 1898: CYCLING. Mr. T. Clement Fisher, a representative of the Austral Cycle Agency, Ltd., who has just completed a long tour by bicycle and otherwise in China and Japan on business, was at Mount Gambier yesterday. He returned to Melbourne from Japan on May 6, and came by train here on Thursday night. He leaves this morning.41
  • 2 Jun 1898: Mr. Clem Fisher has just returned from a successful trip through China and Japan on behalf of the A.C.A. He leaves again shortly on another round, when he may visit India.42
  • 25 Aug 1898: In the current issue of the Austral Wheel is a fullpage picture of Messrs. Fraser, Lunn and Lowe, the three cyclists sent out by "Travel" for a trip round the world. The photos was taken in Japan and brought to Melbourne by Mr. Clem. Fisher, of the Austral Cycle Agency, who met the three Englishmen in the land of the Mousmee.43
  • 12 May 1899: CYCLING. Mr Clem Fisher, well known here as a champion in the days of the old ordinary is over from Melbourne just now, arranging the transfer of the business of the Austral Cycle Agency to Mr D. Haynes. He leaves for Christchurch and Wellington to-morrow to complete the sale.44
  • 18 Jul 1900: Mr. Clement Fisher will oppose Cr. James in the Beaconsfield riding of Berwick shire, council, and Mr. G. Kraft, of Bunyip, will contest the seat for Pakenham riding against Cr. a'Beckett.45
  • 1 Aug 1900: I would draw attention to Mr. Fisher's letter which was read last council day. It did not charge councillors with being too slow for a funeral, but quite the reverse, in fact the inference was that in some instances councillors had been quite smart in getting off the mark—too smart. As "Spectator" instances the Loans Extension Act, I wonder could he tell me how the voting went upon the occasions when the measure was put to the test at the council table. I think he will find that the voting wavered considerably—one time against, another time for. Eh! Rumours of the approaching municipal battle are very conflicting, especially as regards Beaconsfield. A week ago Mr. Fisher announced his retirement in favor of Mr. Martin (who opposed Cr. Ure at last election), and now the rumor is flying that Mr. Martin is to go in unopposed. This of course, is only possible in the event of Mr. James retiring and no opposition coming forward, but Cr. James has not yet announced his intention of retiring—in fact, he made it pretty plain on council day that he would stand again and in the absence of such announcement it would be very unfair to Cr. James to publish the rumour as a fact.46

  • 31 Jan 1920: Father's OBITUARY. MR T. R. FISHER.
The death occurred at his residence, St. Clair, yesterday morning of Mr Thomas Richard Fisher, who for many years occupied with conspicuous success tho position of general manager of tho Standard Fire and Marine Insurance Company. The late Mr Fisher was born in the year 1857 at Waltham Abbey, in the county of Essex, England, being the eldest son of the Rev. T. R. Fisher, and was educated at the Old Kingswood School. On leaving this institution he engaged in mercantile life, but in 1854 left the Old Country for Melbourne. Here he remained for a few months, coming to New Zealand, where he was soon after joined by his father and the rest of the family, the home being made in Christchurch. In the year 1861 he came to Dunedin, and carried on business as a merchant and auctioneer, but later, for health reasons, established himself at Nelson, relinquishing the business there at the decline of the West Coast boom. In the year 1877 he joined the Standard Insurance Company as manager at Christchureh, and three years later was appointed general manager, a position he held for over 32 years. He was a prominent figure in insurance affairs, and was the first president of the Fire Underwriters' Association, a post to which he was reelected on a number of subsequent occasions. Though his main energies were devoted to the success of the insurance business, the late Mr Fisher was identified with other concerns, being a director of the Milburn Lime and Cement Company and other institutions. He also interested himself in the work of the Amenities Society, any scheme for the adornment of the city finding in him an enthusiastic supporter.
Mr Fisher was twice married. His first wife presented him with two children, of whom Mr T. Clement Fisher, of Melbourne, survives. The present Mrs Fisher is the daughter of the late Mr F. B. Hadfield, of Nelson, and there survive him nine sons and two daughters. These are Mr A. H. Fisher, general manager of the Standard Insurance Company; Mr H. H. Fisher, of " Shenley," Albury; Dr W. E. Fisher, of London; Mr N. R. Fisher.general manager of the Jacobs Asbestos Mining Company, Quebec; Mr R. L. Fisher, runholder, North Canterbury; Captain W. W. Fisher, Canadian Highlanders; Mr R. R. Fisher, of the firm Fisher and Gilfillan, Auckland; the Rev. F. V. Fisher, All Saints', Dunedin; Dr G. I. T. C. Fisher, at present in London; Mrs Instone, wife of Captain R. Instone. of the Melbourne pilot service and Miss Florence Fisher, of St. Clair. Mr B. Hill Fisher, the well-known Christchurch accountant and sharebroker, is the only surviving brother of the late Mr Fisher. Mrs Perry, wife of the Rev. Mr Perry, of Onehunga, is his only sister.49

  • 7 Oct 1949: Three Hundred Sheep Disappear
Sheep stealing has become prevalent in the Dadswell's Bridge area, for in recent months 300 weaners have been "spirited away" from one property.
The man who owns the sheep is Mr. H. J. Stapledon, grazier, of Warra Warra Station, Dadswell's Bridge. His sheep were merino-Corriedale cross weaners, all branded with a three inch: diameter "S" and ear-marked "W" for Warra.
Mr. Bruce Stapledon, the sheep owner's son, said that their property which covered 5000 acres, ran 3000 fully grown sheep with a fair percentage of lambs.
This year they had crutched 900 weaners but they had only rounded up 600 for shearing. The others were missing.
Mr. Stapledon said that no definite figures could be given as a count had not yet been taken but he was sure that at least 200 of the weaners had been stolen.
He estimated that about 70 had died from lack of feed due to the bad season.
He added that the missing sheep were mostly weaners. There were no ewes in the paddocks near the road Mr Stapledon said it was common for good rams to be stolen and worked and returned to the paddocks again.
There are 14 paddocks on Warra.
Warra. but the sheep had been taken from only three adjacent to the lane which led from the main Western Highway about two miles away.
Mr. Stapledon was sure that it was organised sheep stealing, probably at night although he said it was possible that some could be removed during the day because the paddocks were a long way from the homestead.
The sheep stealing has been going on for just on eight years, and probably by the same organisation, but Mr Stapledon was certain that it was someone who knew the property well.
It has become worse over the past three years when 70 to 100 sheep have been missed.
First Constable McKinley, of Glenorchy, said yesterday that the loss of the sheep had not been officially reported to him.
He said it was possible that some of the sheep would be found as the mustering of the different paddocks was completed.30

Village Bell*Apr 1985 VALE FRANK ROYNON
We offer sympathy to his wife Winifred and members of the family at the death of Frank Roynon, aged 80 years, who died suddenly on 1 March, 1985.
Frank was born in Surrey, England, in 1905 and was a member of the Household Cavalry of the Life Guards in England in the early 1920’s. Later he joined the Civil Defence Corps as a Transport Officer, and during the bombing raids over London he was in charge of a large contingent of ambulances carrying injured to the various hospitals. After the war he was an ambulance driver attached to the Farnborough Hospital.
Frank and Win retired in 1961 and settled in Upper Beaconsfield, Frank exercising his skills in renovating houses and gardens - the last of which is the current residence - “THE COTTAGE” in Salisbury Road.
Frank leaves a lot of friends in the area - among them many in Beacon Hills Golf Club, the Berwick Bridge Club, St. Andrews Uniting Church and the U.B. community.6

Winifred Gertrude Bond

Winifred Gertrude ROYNON
(1911-2010)
Anecdote*Notes for Win's service (Jo Carter)
Win asked me to join the sharing of her journey through her long life. For the last 15 years Win has been my mentor and friend.
I met Win as a neighbour and she left as my dear friend. Soon after we met, Win had a birthday, and realising that she was not young, I asked if it was a special one. I really expected to be told that it was the Big 70, but she sweetly told me "They are all special, dear" It was actually 82. This answer, along with many more of Win's sayings, has become part of our family folklore.
We were driving down the hill one day to play social bridge at the home of Win's friend, Annabel. Another charming friend of Win's was driving us, speeding along. I sat in the back seat with white knuckles, not game to say a word. In her sweetest little English voice, Win turned to the driver and said "Have they changed the speed limit dear?"

Win's family were all devout non conformists, and Win signed the Rechabite's abstinence pledge at 14, and told me that she had never had an alcoholic drink.
However, she and her older sister Leili were allowed to play bridge. Win told me she was in her teens when she learnt the game, and it became one of her passions.
She introduced me to bridge when she ran some classes at the Community Centre. Win was a founding member of the Berwick Bridge Club and she suggested that we continue our classes there and join the club.
For many years, I visited Win for some part of almost every day. I meant to just check that she was OK but the kettle was put on, and we would chat for ages. She had had a most fascinating life, and her recall was wonderful. She told me her memories, and took me to another time and lifestyle. I felt that I knew the people of Knockholt, and a way of life before I was born.

I asked Win once if she had any family, and she replied that they were not blessed. She loved children, and the children and grandchildren of her neighbours and friends were fortunate to have known her. When my three grandsons were young, she organised treasure hunts for them. She wrote notes on scraps of paper in chemist's containers, and hid them up in trees, or under rocks, and at the end of the hunt; there would be blocks of chocolate or packets of sweets. One time, they had to dig up a treasure chest. It was a metal box, filled with old watches. She thought they would have fun taking the watches to pieces. I know that she was fond of Fiona's children and has a special spot for Debbie's grown up lot.
Win had a friend at bridge who is a poet, Jim Dow. He wrote a piece for the club newsletter, and Win decided to write a reply. At this stage Win was in her early nineties, but she started writing poems again. I have put some of her efforts on the memorabilia table. She initially called Jim the Knave of Heart, a bridge term, but changed it later to The Poet Laureate. Jim wrote a poem to Win on her last birthday, and another on her death. He was not able to come today to read his verses and asked that I read them. I probably can't. I used the last two lines on the order of service, under the photo of Win on her 95th birthday, doing what she loved, playing cards with her dear old friend (Win's term) Gwyn Hughes. They won!

For some years, Win had two of her old friends, Elva Ratcliffe and Daphne Hollingsworth to lunch on Tuesdays, and I sometimes joined them. One day I started teasing Win about a gentleman neighbour to whom she chatted at her gate. We had a hilarious time planning a wedding, bridesmaid, tutus and all. Win wrote a poem, which I typed and printed for her. There is a copy on the table.
For the last few years of her life in her own home, Win had home care. Her regular carer was Glenda, and in 2006 Win wrote "what would I do without Glenda". She often told me that Glenda was like a daughter to her, and she visited Win in the nursing home up to the end.
Even in the nursing home, Win did not lose her charming manner. One day, a resident wandered in while we were talking, and again in sweet but determined way, Win said "Thank you for visiting me, dear, would you be as kind as to close the door on the way out?

Win was a feminist before they were politically correct, and a woman with a strong social conscience. She was delighted when I told her that we had a female prime minister. Even happier that it was a Labor woman. Win was a person who always saw the cup half full, and she always counted her blessings. She was a gracious and fascinating woman. Win has had a strong influence in my life.
I will try to read a poem which Win wrote in June 2006
She was worthy of anyone's company. We will never see her like again.

Those Two Old Birds by Jim Dow.

Those two old birds have flown the coop
And swooped down from the hill
To infiltrate our playing group
And zoom in for the kill.

Their smiles are sweet, all charm and grace,
But still they're far from meek.
They bid so boldly, in your face.
Those birds from Upper Beac.

They gamble freely, show no fear,
A partnership formidable,
And as they shift up to top gear,
Seems nothing is unbiddable.

With high percentage, they're the best,
They fit like hand and glove,
They fly with glee back to the nest.
And do so with our love.

Memories of Bridge

I'm old and tired as you know
Forgive me if I grumble
And when my words are indistinct
Excuse me if I mumble.

Remind me do, just one more time
To Count my Blessings - "Ultra fine"
I know I'm blessed in friends galore
And should I really ask for more!

Gwyn goes back to yesteryear -
Nineteen eighty three precisely -
Foundation members of the Club
Gwyn partners me so nicely.

JoAnne comes to say "How Do?"
Shirley brings a treat
Best wishes on the telephone
Just make my day complete.

To friends who talk and friends who smile
To friends who stay a little while
I would ask that I may be
Worthy of your company.
_ * - * -
Win Roynon June 2006.

Lunch on Tuesdays by Win Roynon nearly 95

Lunch is just a picnic thing
Soup and toasted cheese
Sometimes a fruit salad too
With ice cream if you please

One week we spoke of bridesmaids
Lighthearted as can be
Attendants at my wedding?
Well- I'm only ninety three!

A toy boy wouldn't do for me
- An escort or a fop
So I would go immediately
To the local Husband Shop

And at the Husband Shop I'd buy
A little henpecked man
Guaranteed to cook and clean
And polish every pan.

So Bridesmaids three, get off some weight
And to the seamstress go
Lavender and Lace is all the go
"Becoming" as you know.

Imagination lets us dream
And creates thoughts anew
I hope these little verses
Have been some fun for you.1

Village BellDec 2001 Happy birthday Win Roynon
Winifred Roynon was born in Kent, England, on 8th November 1911. She remembers watching a Zeppelin air balloon flying over the Thames in 1916.
Win has just achieved nonagenarian status, joining a select and illustrious group in our community.
The Roynons, Win and her late husband, Frank moved to the village in the early 1960s and "did up" a few cottages before settling in her present home.
The birthday party for Win started on Wednesday 7th November with a large cake, lots of flowers and many congratulations from her fellow members at the Berwick Bridge Club, of which Win is a Founding Member, Life Member and oldest member. On the actual day, Thursday, Win enjoyed lunch and more bridge with a group of close friends, and the young players (the 80 year olds) beat the oldies (the 90 year olds) by a few points. Friday we held an At Home at Win's home and over 50 friends and neighbours joined her for afternoon tea and chat. The house was filled with laughter, friendship and flowers. Win spent the weekend with interstate visitors, dining in style in the beautiful teashops and beauty spots in the hills.
Win is an example to all of us. She keeps her mind active with current affairs and bridge, and is always willing to listen to and help anyone in need. She works hard in her garden and shares her flowers and produce with others. Congratulations Win.9
Death*7 Sep 2010 "Salisbury House", Upper Beaconsfield, VIC, Australia.
Village Bell*Nov 2010 VALE: Winifred Gertrude ROYNON.
Win was born on 8 November 1911, the second daughter of Fred and Alice Bond in Knockholt Kent England and sister to 2 year old Leili. Win was a Brownie and Girl Guide, and later a Cub Mistress. She attended the Methodist Church and was a Sunday school teacher.
Win’s father, Fred Bond was a carpenter and a secretary of the local trade union. He became the secretary of the local branch of the Ancient Order of Forresters, a group which insured working men for death and serious illness. He kept the records of weekly payments from members and payouts where necessary. As a young woman, Win helped her father with this work, and when he died, Win was able to take the job over. It was a responsible job for a young woman of that generation, and became more so when the Second World War broke out in 1939. Win was put in control of all of the area branches in her County. She was extremely proud of her work as it was fairly uncommon for a young woman to hold down such a responsible position at that time.
In 1937 Win married a tall, dashing member of the Royal Horseguards, Frank Roynon. One of her treasured photos was of Frank in uniform, complete with Busby, and mounted on his horse. She frequently lamented that they were not blessed with children.
In the late 1930s Win developed a serious internal condition. She was a patient at St Thomas’s Hospital in London at the outbreak of war, and when the hospital was ordered to evacuate or discharge all patients, to make way for expected war casualties, Win begged her husband to take her home. At this time, Frank was employed as chauffeur to a local dignitary, and ran the local ambulance service during the war. Win worked for the Forresters throughout the war, although her health at that time was poor. The passing of the National Insurance Act in 1946 gradually phased out Win’s job and in 1949 she and Frank sold up their lovely cottage, Hickmandias, in Knockholt near Seven Oaks, and set out for a new and healthier life in Australia.
Because of Win’s health problems, they decided not to emigrate to Australia on the assisted migrant scheme, but to fly out at their own expense. So they booked flights on a Sunderland Flying Boat to Australia. Wins has kept all of the memorabilia of this trip, it took about 10 days with stopovers at exciting places on the way.
On arrival in Victoria, Win and Frank stayed with his sister Rose and family in Melbourne for a short time, caught up with the Hollingsworths, friends from their Kent village, then bought a small dairy farm in Allendale Victoria. They worked hard on the farm, and became part of a close community. At this time, Win was a member of the Country Women’s Association, and a member of the local amateur theatrical society.
They also renewed their love of the card game of Bridge. Win had played bridge since she was about 15, when her sister Leili had some bridge playing friends from University, and needed Win for a fourth. In Allendale, she and Frank found fellow bridge players in Jean and Peter Carter, and they enjoyed many hours of play.
In the late 1950s, they sold up the farm and moved to Dandenong. By this time, Win’s health had improved to the point where there was no further evidence of her problems. While at Dandenong, Win got a job at Westminster Carpets, setting up their files for computerising their records. While there, she joined two workmates, Geoff Davidson and Margaret Pawsey, at night school, doing an English course.
In 1967, Frank and Win bought a cottage in Upper Beaconsfield. Win now worked at the Pakenham Shire offices, doing clerical work. Frank was retired. They moved to Corringham Road in 1968, then after a couple of years, moved to their last home at 16 Salisbury Road Upper Beaconsfield. Win was active in the CWA and was a member of the Beacon Hill Golf Club. By this time, Jean and Peter Carter had moved to Berwick, and they and the Roynons, together with other dedicated bridge players, founded the Berwick Bridge Club. Win was a member of St Andrew’s Presbyterian church (later the Uniting Church) in Berwick, and later attended St John’s in Upper Beaconsfield.
In 1983, Frank died suddenly. Win had the support of many close friends and acquaintances in the area and lived alone in her own home until 2009. For many years, I visited her for some part of most days. I meant to just make sure she was all right, but the kettle would go on, and we would chat for ages. She had had a fascinating life and her recall was wonderful. She took me to another time and lifestyle. Win was a wonderful friend and neighbour. Her reminiscences of her life in the quiet Kentish village were warm and fascinating. She was a charming English lady, always polite. She was a strong feminist and a supporter of the underprivileged.
After suffering a few mild strokes, Win moved to Salisbury House in Salisbury Road. While residing there, Win charmed all the staff and residents with her gentle, polite manners. She lived there until her death on 7 September 2010.10
