Harold Thomas Harvey Smith migrated from England in 1912 and resided at Woodside with his uncle William John Harvey Smith. In England he had served for 3 years in the Prince of Wales 1st North Staffordshire Voluntary Regiment. He appears to have enlisted twice, first on 12 Feb 1915, when he was 30 years old, SERN 992, but he was discharged on 29 May 1915 for being medically unfit because of an overlapping toe. As he refused an operation the Board recommended his discharge as permanently unfit. He enlisted again on 23 Sep 1916 with the 46th Battalion, SERN 12970. He embarked from Melbourne on 25 Oct 1916 on HMAT A38 Ulysses. He appears to have been stationed at Le Havre and served as a driver. He returned to Australia on 6 Sep 1919. He later returned to England.

  • 1 Jan 1914: WEDDING: TYLER-MONTGOMERIE
    The marriage of Roy John, son of Mr John Tyler of Sale, to Erene (Daisy), eldest daugher of Mr L. E Montgomerie, Beechworth, was celebrated at Scots Church, Melbourne, on Wednesday evening, December 24, by the Rev. Dr. Marshall, reports the "Australasian."
    The church had been very prettily decorated with Christmas lilies and white daisies, and at the end of each pew hung a floral horseshoe, the scheme having been executed by Mrs Harvey Smith, of Beaconsfield, and girl friends. The bride, who was was given away by her father, wore a gown of white satin, showing at one side a panel of gold brocade, and draped with Brussels lace. The square cut train was lined with gold ninon, and her veil of hand-embroidered tulle was arranged with a silver hair-comb which had been worn by her great grandmother on her wedding day. A bouquet of orchids, carnations, and water lillies was carried. The bridesmaids were Miss Lillie Montgomerie (sister) and Miss Win Reynolds. They both wore frocks of gold crepe-de chine, with blue sashes; gold tulle mob caps, with wreaths of forget-me nots and yellow daisies, and finished at the back with long veils. Their bouquets were of Iceland poppies and blue flowers, and they wore the bridegroom's gifts, an amethyst necklace and an aquamarine bangle. Mr R. A. Cooper was best man, and Mr Harold Harvey Smith the groomsman. A reception, followed by a wedding supper, was held at the Occidental Hotel, the hostess being Mrs Montgomerie (grandmother of the bride), of Grandview Grove, Armadale. The honeymoon is being spent at Mornington, and on their return the bride and bridegroom will reside at Kilmany. The going away costume was a brown silk shantung, with a collar of Sahara crepe-de-chine, and a hat en suite.   • 28 Apr 1915: On Saturday afternoon last Mr Harold J. Harvey Smith, nephew of Mr W. J. Harvey Smith, J.P., of "Woodside,"' was presented with a pipe and case by the members of the Tennis Club. Mr Smith has enlisted in the Light Horse division and expects to be leaving Vietoria at an early date. Mr Hurditch, in making the presentation, spoke highly of Mr Smith and his services to the club. All regretted his departure and wished him a safe return. Mr Smith suitably responded.11
  • 6 May 1915: Mr Harold J. Harvey Smith, son of Mr W. J. Harvey Smith, J.P., "Woodside," Upper Beaconsfield, has enlisted for the good old British front, and has been farewelled and presented with a silver-mounted pipe and bear-skin tobacco pouch by the ladies of the Beaconsfield Upper Tennis Club. Mr. Harvey was an ardent supporter of the club, and now gallantly goes to protect our foes. He is in the Light Horse, and should be able to ride down something formidable. It is likely that he was related to William John Harvey-Smith, as he once enquired about his whereabouts. SERN 2674. His unit embarked from Melbourne on board HMAT A68 Anchises on 26 Aug 1915. He was a Private in the 5th Divisional Signal Company. He was awarded a Meritorious Service Medal (Commonwealth Gazette 173/7 Nov 1918).
After the war he moved to NSW.

John Sweeney enlisted on 6 Jul 1915, as a 31 year old single man, working as a driver. SERN 2884. His unit embarked from Melbourne on board RMS Moldavia on 5 Oct 1915 as a Private with the 21st Battalion.
He returned to Australia 16 March 1919.

  • 1 May 1913: Berwick Police Court. Wednesday, April 30. Before Mr Harris, P.M., and Messrs G. Wilson, Harvey Smith, McLellan, and Collings, J's.P.
    Constable Hehir v. Sweeney (a carter working at Berwick), the charge being drunkenness and offensive behavior. H. Morrison, grocer, deposed that on Easter Monday night, at a social dance, defendant and another man created a great uproar outside the building in which the dance was being held. The other man's name was Fulsham. The company was greatly annoyed by the noise; both men were the worse for liquor. Constable Hehir deposed that he arrested Fulsham, who had already been dealt with by a previous Bench. The noise defendant made could have been heard three-quarters of a mile away. Fined 5/ for drunkeness and 10 for offensive behavior, in default 3 days imprisonment.11
  • 30 Sep 1915: Beaconsfield Volunteers. A Batch of Twenty. Great preparations were made by the committee appointed to entertain the local volunteers at the Beaconsfield hall on Friday evening, and the people in the town and district joined in the movement in an enthusiastic manner, the result being that the function reflected credit upon all concerned, and passed off in a manner that was most gratifying. Mr E Williams, the Hon. secretary, worked energetically, and the residents subscribed liberally. In this connection the irre pressable Harry May gained the highest list amongst the collectors. The ladies deserve special mention for the tasteful manner in which the interior of the hall was decorated with flowers, flags and evergreens, the effect being most pleasing to the eye. Mr Chirnside supported the movement in a very generous way. He engaged four pipers for the occasion, and in the evening at about 8 o'clock the pipers, attired in their attractive cos tumes, arrived at Beconsfield, having marched from Mr Chirnside's place. The bagpipes soon aided in attracting a crowd of about 300, and selections were played in front of the hall. Mr Chirnside also donated 20 Barling pipes for the local volunteers. Proceedings started with the National Anthem, followed by a few words of wel come by the chairman (Mr Rozier), who expressed his pleasure at seeing so many present. Mr Jennings, jun. played a first-class pianoforte selection, which was followed by selections by the pipers, who then left for Melbourne by the evening train. Cheers were given for the volunteers, and the company joined in singing—They are Jolly Good Fellows. Little Miss D. Currie sang The Australian Kangaroos; Mr Hurditch, Molly The Marchioness; Mr F. Richardson, Your Country Calls You; Mr E. Williams, The Powder Monkey; Mr M. Kelly (in costume), Up, Up Early in the Morning, and Roaming in the Gloaming; Little Miss Lily Richardson, Only One of the Toys: Mr Harding, Asleep in the Deep; and Mr Jennings, sen. and Mr Williams, The Battle Eve. The Rev. W. Whiteside said he was pleased to be present to bid good-bye to the volunteers, and to wish them God speed; he felt proud of them, was glad they were going to the front, and would be pleased to welcome them home again. It was said that Corporal Jacka's mother didn't want her son to go to the war, but the lad, whilst insisting, remarked that he might gain a V.O., and he got it, too. (Applause). The young men with them to-night might do the same; they were going to fight for the freedom of the world, and the good, old flag. Britain had always come out of any serious war in the past, well, and at the moment, although the outlook was black, he be lieved she would emerge from the present struggle just as successfully as she had done in the past. He hoped their volun teers would return victorious. (Applause): The Rev. J. Wilson said that their young friends must go, for duty called them, but the deepest desire in his heart was the delightful pleasure of welcoming them back again. He felt it keenly that so many of the young men had to leave and engage in the conflict, but he was glad of the opportunity to say farewell to them. At Beaconsfield meetings were regularly held, when prayers were offered for the men at the front, and these would be continued with especial interest under existing circumstances. His last words were-God be with you till we meet again. (Applause). Mr Jas. Gibb expressed his pleasure at being preseat to honor the young men leaving for the front. The district, which he had known for 50 years, had reason to feel proud of them. From his place in New South Wales eight of his best men were leaving to engage in the fight for liberty, as their grandfathers had done years ago. He hoped the young men would return safe and sound, and trusted to be present when they were welcomed home. (Applause). Mr Crozier also joined in wishing the men God-speed and a safe return. He had known the district in the early days, and considered that during recent years gratifying advancement had been made. He would ask the young men to be al ways gentlemen, paying regard to the language they used, and would ask them to live clean lives in order that the coun try would eventually benefit. Beacons field would then indeed have reason to be proud of them when they returned. (Ap plause). Mr Keast said he had accepted the invitation to be present that evening with a twofold pleasure-he had been with the people of the district in their pleasures and joys, and he was with them at the present time whilst they were honoring the young men who were going to the front. He wished them God speed and a safe return. At the present time the British Empire was engaged in the biggest fight it had ever engaged in, and in this respect he was proud to say that the Australian lads at Gallipoli had put their names on a roll of honor; no men had ever done better on the battle field. (Applause.) We are now fighting for our very existence, and against a powerful nation, but we've got to win the day, and the boys with them to-night were going to help to do it. We had to win the day for the peace of the world, and, praise God, we would win the day. (Applause.) Although he didn't believe in preference, if there was to be any preference in regard to employment, it should be given to those who returned after fighting for their country. Fathers and mothers of the brave lads fighting at Gallipoli had every reason to feel proud of their sons and what had al ready been accomplished. At present the outlook was serious; Bulgaria was mobilising troops, and it looked as if she would fight with Turkey, but, In that case, no doubt Greece and Roumania would join the Allies. We will win this war, but our troops must be prepared to fight, not only at Gallipoli, but wher ever they were required. Great Britain had raised an army of 3,000,000, also 800,000 for making munitious, and he had no doubt that the boys with them to-night would do their duty, and main tain the honor of Australia. It would be found that the British soldiers were as good as ever, and it must not be forgot ten that the Germans hadn't touched the Navy yet. (A voice: They can't touch it). It was the mothers, however, who were making the biggest sacrifice in re gard to the volunteers, and they had his sympathy. Beaconsfield had sent the largest proportion, according to popula tion, than any other part of Australia, and he felt proud of the fact. He felt that a great destiny awaited Victoria, but the people must economise and live within their income, for £20,000,000 had been borrowed, and in the near future another £25,000,000 would be required. Before concluding he wished to refer to the public spirited generosity of Mr Chirnside, who had set a splendid example by donating a motor ambulance, end had also liberally contributed to the function that night, for which he (the speaker) desired to thank him. (Ap plause.) Mr Keast, on behalf of the residents of Beaconsfield, presented the following with wristlet watches :-Privates Alex. May, Jas. Adamson, H. Harbour, D. Tulk, John Tucker, Tom Sterry, L Paternoster, Whiteside, F. White, A. Childs, A. Bragg, J. Rix, J. Osborne, A. Bryman, H. McNaughton, Sweeney, L. Christie, John Adamson, and Corporal Luke. And, on behalf of Mr Chirnside, each was presented with a Barling pipe. Three hearty cheers were then given for the volunteers, three more for their fathers and mothers, and another sound of cheers for Mr and Mrs Adamson (who has three sons with the Expeditionary forces). Corporal Barnett, who briefly responded, returned thanks for the presentations made, and also acknowledged the splen did manner in which they had been treated by the people of the district. A flashlight photo of the assemblage was taken by Mr Luke. Mr Keast, on behalf of the residents, extended a welcome home to Private Gar diner, recently returned from Gallipoli. Private Gardiner said that, although he was glad to be amongst his friends again, he hoped to recover from the wounds he received so that he could once,more take his place in the firing line. He would never forget the experience he had gone through, and it could scarcely be imagined how badly help was needed two days after the troops landed at Gallipoli. Acclamation from the audience took the form of singing He's a Jolly Good Fellow. The Chairman, on behalf of members of the congregations of the Church. of England, Congregational Church, and the Methodist Church, presented Mr John Adamson with a silver pencil, a note book, and a testament. Mr Adamson, sen. responded on behalf of, his son, who was unable to be present. On the motion of Messre H. May and Thompson, a vote of thanks was accorded Mr Keast, Mr Chirnside, and the per formers. Mr Keast suitably replied. At about 11 o'clock Corporal Rix and Private Childs put in an appearance. It appears that when they reached Mel bourne, from Seymour, they were too late to complete the journey by train, so a taxi was requisitioned. Thus it was that they were enabled to be present at the send-off, and they were hailed upon the platform to address a few words to their Beaconsfield friends. An elaborate and abundant supper was provided by the ladies, and the large at tendance did full justice to the good things provided. The hall was then cleared for dancing, and an enjoyable programme of dances was indulged in to the strains of excellent music supplied by an efficient band.12
  • 10 Jul 1919: Beaconsfield. -o- A social was held in the Public hall on Friday night to welcome home several "diggers" who had recently returned. The hall was tastefully decorated with gum leaves and flags of the Allies. Almost 200 people were present, and everyone thoroughly enjoyed the evening. Cr Martin officiated as chairman and welcomed the boys home on behalf of the residents of Beaconsfield. Cr Anderson also welcomed them back, and said the council would stand by the soldiers and see that they got a fair deal. A short musical programme arranged by the secretary (Mr Williams) was greatly appreciated, the following contributing:-Mrs F. Richardson, Miss G. May, Miss E. Anderson, Messrs Kerr, Paxton, and Meekin. Mrs Cliff and Miss Williams played the accompaniments. The boys got a very warm reception when they were asked to come on the platform to receive a gold medal each, given by the residents. Cr Groves, M.L.A., made the presentations, and in a stirring speech, roused great enthusiasm. Following are the names of those who received medals: -Sgt G. Grant, Cpls C. Whiteside and Barnett, Ptes Luke, Bryant, R. Adamson, Jack Adamson, J. B. Adamson, M.M., Warmbrunn, Brown, R. Williams, F. F. Williams, Pettit, Sweeney, and M. McNaughton. Cpl Whiteside responded on behalf of the"diggers." Supper was then handed round, after which dancing was indulged in until the wee sma' hours.     When Louis J Imer, of Lyndon-street, Camberwell, was charged at the South Melbourne Court on Wednesday with having driven a motor-truck to which an effective silencer was not fitted on August 1. Constable Bridgeland said that he heard the truck in St Kilda road on August 1, and it was emitting an ear-splitting noise like that of an aeroplane at close range." Imer, who was fined 10/ , said that he had been given the truck to use by his employers.
    Foster Clarke, manager of J. McCann and Sons Pty. Ltd., of Moray street, South Melbourne, was fined £1 for having aided and abetted Imer in a breach of the motor regulations. Clarke told the Bench that he did not know that the truck had been taken out of the garage in the condition alleged by the police.11

  • 27 Nov 1916: COUNTRY NEWS, JAN JUC. PRESENTATION TO CR. IMER
    The local Mechanics' Hall was well filled last Friday evening, when a farewell social evening was tendered by the district inhabitants to Cr. George Imer and his family, who have sold their property and are leaving for Melbourne in a few days. Cr. E. E. Hendy, of the Barrarbool shire, and ex-Alderman Roadknight, motored out from Geelong, and the former acted as chairman of the concert programme, and also on behalf of the subscribers, made a presentation of a handsome gold watch (suitably inscribed) and gold chain, to Cr. Imer, and a gold bangle to Miss Imer, and also a book to Cr. Imer on behalf of the editor of the Geelong "Advertiser" (for which Cr. Imer has formerly acted as local conespondent).
    The chairman apologised for the absence of the president of the shire (Cr. W. F. Volum), and Crs. W. F. McIntyre and J. T. Prowse, ex-Cr. Wm. Ham and Mr. J. F. Farrer, M.L.A., and letters were read from each of these gentlemen. The chairman said they were met together that evening to do honor to one who had resided in their midst as an honored, and respected citizen of Jan Juc for 30 years. He explained that he was acting as chairman at the request of the presentation committee in his official capacity as one of their representatives in the Coast riding, and that his knowledge of Cr Imer was confined to municipal matters of a recent onto only, but from others he had gathered the following facts. The guest of the evening had arrived at Jan Juc 30 years previously and had purchased a bare paddock at £10 per acre. He had built a house, planted an orchard, etc., reared a family, and made a good living during the whole time, and had now sold out in war time at £34/7/6 per acre. That showed what could be done by industry and thrift.
    Cr. Imer had gradually come to be looked upon as the leader of all public movements in Jan Juc, and had been elected a member of the school board of advice, a trustee of the Methodist Church, a member of the Free Library Committee, and secretary of the Road Improvement Committee, but he was best known as a member of the Coast riding of the Shire of Barrarbool. He was elected unopposed six years ago to ex-Cr Chas Noble's seat, when the latter went to Melbourne, and had been returned unopposed for a second term, and had he remained in the council a little longer he would probably have been elected president. During his term of office he had been largely instrumental in getting the council and the Country Roads' Board to agree to carry the main Anglesea road through Jan Juc instead of through Torquay, and also in getting the main roads nationalised so that all payments to the Board had to be borne by the whole shire and not by the particular riding in which the road is situated. They all regretted that Cr. Imer and his family were leaving Jan Juc, and would much prefer that the meeting had been called to celebrate peace rather than to say good-bye to one whose place it would be difficult to fill. They also all deeply regretted the real cause of his departure, which was the death of his wife, and they tendered him their sincere sympathy.
    Ex-Alderman Roadknight supported the chairman's remarks and referred to his long business associations with Cr. Imer and to the fact that he had sold his fruit in the Geelong markets for many years past. He said that Mr. Imer's fruit always brought top prices, because it was well packed and properly graded, and always gave satisfaction to the buyers. Mr. Edmonds also spoke on behalf of the residents of Torquay, and referred to the high esteem in which Cr Imer was held there.
    Cr. Imer, in his reply, said—"My heart is too full to adequately express my sincere appreciation and heartfelt gratitude to you all for the beautiful and costly gift you have just presented me, and also for the very kind, eulogistic and sympathetic references made by Cr. Hendy, and supported by Mr. A. Roadknight and Mr. Edmonds, of Torquay. I can assure you, friends, that it is with a heavy heart that I am leaving Jan Juc, and my many friends in the district, and I sincerely trust you will not misjudge my reason for so doing. When I came to Jan Juc thirty years ago (as a lad of 17 years), I used to clear off to Waurn Ponds every Sunday and every other chance I got, for the friends of my boyhood were there. However, I soon made some friends here, and I am pleased to say that the members of the families who became my friends nearly thirty years ago am still lumbered amongst my best friends and supporters to-day, a fact which I am not only thankful for, but also proud of. Christmas Day twenty-two years ago I got married, and with the help of my loving and devoted wife, I was encouraged to take an active part in public matters, and to help carry on institutions and movements for the good of the district generally. I became a member of the school board of advice, secretary of the Road Improvement Association, and the Mechanics' Institute Committee, and a member of the Methodist Church Trust. Six years ago I also became one of your representatives for the Coast riding of the Shire of Barrarbool and, with the help and co-operation of my colleagues, succeeded in obtaining many concessions for the district. I am very proud of the confidence reposed in me by the residents of Jan Juc district, who, since I started public work, have always looked to me as their leader, and the one to initiate and help carry out movements for their welfare. I am also thankful to God that I was given ability and strength to do my duty as far as I saw it. You all know of the sad and sudden bereavement sustained by myself and family through the death on August 7th of my dear wife, whose kind and loving disposition, and devotion to me, to her children, and to her late mother, endeared her to all, and I would like to take this opportunity to publicly thank our many friends for the kind messages and expressions of sympathy received from all parts. It was this sad blow that influenced me to place my comfortable home in the market, for, had this not happened, I would never have thought of doing, so at present. I shall always have many hallowed, yet pleasant, recollections of my happy married life, all of which was spent in Jan Juc, and I would like to say here that any credit or praise I have received to-night is almost entirely due to my late dear wife, of whom it could justly be said that "she made home happy," and I think it is the duty of a happy person to do what he can for others around him. And now, dear friends, I must again ask you to accept my heartfelt thanks for all your kindness and support, for the great pains you have taken to make this gathering such a success, and for your beautiful and useful present. I assure you I shall always treasure it, not only for its great intrinsic value, and utility, but also for its greater value to me as a splendid token of your goodwill, respect and esteem."
    Miss Imer, in a few well chosen words, also thanked the people very kindly for the handsome presentation they had made her.
    After doing ample justice to a good supper, the visitors from Geelong departed, and dancing was then indulged in until a late hour.16
  • 8 Apr 1920: Beaconsfield - On Saturday. April 3, the Beaconsfield Upper Fruitgrowers' and Horticultual Association's annual show was marked by a good display of fruit in all classes, notably in cases packed for export and the local market.
