  • 5 Jun 1928: DEFECTIVE APPLES ON SALE. TO THE EDITOR OF THE ARGUS. Sir,—The letters of Dr McArthur and "Observer," appearing on May 30 and 31 respectively touch on a subject of the greatest importance to orchardists. Undoubtedly the present unsatisfactorty state of affairs, on the Melbourne market at least, has been largely if not entirely contributed to by the methods (or rather lack of methods) of the man who, having a few old miserable apple trees on his small farm, carts in a quantity of fruit on each visit made to the city, probably by-weekly. This individual presumably is ignorant of the principles of " frenzied finance " and thinks because he gathered the fruit himself, put it into any old case, stacked it on his waggon, and carted it into the city, 10 or more miles distant, that at 1/ or 1/6 a case he feels he is "well ahead of it." To such an individual I would say that based on a 3,500 case crop this season, it has cost me 7/9 per case to produce and market (selling costs not included). To prevent this type of person from playing havoc with the industry, I think some form of legistiation should be introduced. Even the much-debated orchard-tax of £1 per acre (or part thereof), would effectually stop his operations. These budding Rockefellers too, are mostly responsible for the flood of "windfalls" thrown on the market at the beginning of each season. Fancy windfalls, and Jonathans at that being put on the market in a season such is this. Early in February the Western Market was loaded with them to the detriment of prime quality earlier varieties. When are we going to organise and get the industry moving on sane business lines?—Yours, FRANK GRIFFIN. Upper Beaconsfield, May 31.33
  • 1 Feb 1929: MANURIAL EXPERIMENTS ON APPLE TREES. Beaconsfield Tests
Excerpt: DETAILS OF THE EXPERIMENTS. To carry out the suggestions embodied in the previous paragraph from 700 to 1000 trees of the same variety, and age, and with little variation in size and bearing capacity, would be required. It has been found impossible to secure such numbers in the commercial orchards at our disposal, and a less ambitious scheme has of necessity been adopted for the first year. Plots 1-8 have been laid out in duplicate on each of two orchards in the Upper Beaconsfield district, namely, those of Mr. W. H. Brown (Jonathans, 14 years old), and Captain F. Griffin (Granny Smith's, 12 years old), the only two suitable orchards available at the time the experiment was begun. The object of the trials in these cases will be to see what results, if any, follow on the application of any one of
the three classes of fertilisers singly, and when all three are applied together for a period of years. At the present time growers are entirely in the dark as to the specific effect of these fertilisers.
Lack of space precludes, for the time being, a study of the effect of the different combinations of them. In each orchard there are sixteen plots, and except for minor details the arrangement in both is similar. In Captain Griffin's orchard the number of trees available necessitated the reduction of the plot unit to six. In Mr. Brown's orchard a plot consists of eight trees.
The plot treatments are as follow: —
    Plot.
    1. No manure.
    2. Nitrogeneous manure.
    3. No manure.
    4. Potassic manure.
    5. No manure.
    6. Phosphatic manure.
    7. No manure.
    8. Complete manure (Nitrogenous -|- Potassic -|- Phosphoric).
    9. No manure.
    10. Complete manure.
    11. No manure.
    12. Phosphatic manure.
    13. No manure.
    14. Potassic manure.
    15. No manure.
    16. Nitrogeneous manure.
Thus it will be seen that the series 1 to 8 is duplicated in plots 9 to 16, and that there are as many control or no-manure plots as there are manure plots.
    GUARD ROWS.
Every plot is separated from adjacent plots, or other orchard trees not included in the experiment, by a guard row. Trees in, guard rows are given a half-dressing of manure on each side according to the plots they separate. For example, trees in a guard row between a nitrogen plot and a no-manure plot receive a half dressing of nitrogen on the side facing the nitrogen plot, and no manure on the other side. If separating potash and nitrogen plots, they receive a half dressing of potash and a half, dressing of nitrogen respectively, on the sides facing the plots in question. It must be remembered that guard trees do not enter into the experiment; they are merely buffers between plots. Walter Henry Brown34

  • 24 Jun 1930: HARDWOOD FRUIT CASES. TO THE EDITOR OF THE ARGUS.
Sir,-Mr. G. J. Aldwinckle is entitled to prefer hardwood to softwood cases, but why adopt such a selfish attitude as to want to penalise further the great number of growers - probably a majority - who prefer softwood, in hoping that a further duty will be imposed on their importation? One reason advanced - that Victorian millers should be given a chance to show what they can do - sounds rather feeble when they have had the field entirely to themselves for more than 30 years and cannot yet produce anything better than that provided this season. Mr. Aldwinckle has either been particularly fortunate in ob- taining perfect cases or else he is very easily satisfied. Why should a grower not use a softwood case if, in his opinion, it presents his product in a more attractive form? Whether the fruit brings more in one container that the other is beside the question. Naturally the user of the more expensive case hopes to obtain a better price. Many factors over which neither the grower nor agent has any control regulate the price realised on home markets.

  • 5 Jul 1923: Dance at Upper Beaconsfield.
At the invitation of Lt.-Col. and Mrs. G. H. Knox, a number of their friends from Upper Beaconsfield and the surrounding districts, and also Melbourne were present at the delightful dance held in the Assembly Hall, Upper Beaconsfield, on Friday evening, June 22. The guest of the evening was Miss K. Bird, cousin of the hostess, who is on a visit from England, and the dance was given in honor of her twenty-first birthday. The supper room of the hall was converted into a cosy lounge, with easy chairs, carpets, and a glowing fire. Bridge tables were provided for non-dancers. On a large table in the supper-room was arranged a buffet supper.
The hall was gaily decked with cerise and violet streamers festooned from a centrepiece arranged with hoops of paper flowers of the same color and greenery. Tall oriental lamps and festoons of greenery, with cerise flowers, made a very effective screen round the dias, on which the musicians were seated. Mr. K. R. Pinkerton (of Berwick) was responsible for the artistic decorations of the hall. At 10 p.m. the guests retired to Salisbury House, opposite the hall, to partake of a sit-down supper.
After midnight a large birthday cake, with twenty-one candles burning brightly on it, was carried into the hall, and cut by Miss Bird. The hostess (Mrs. G. H. Knox) wore a gracefully draped frock of apricot changeable taffeta, caught at the side with monkey fur: she carried an Early Victorian posy of autumn tints. Miss K. • 28 Jun 1926: BEACONSFIELD. The Rev. T. W. Greenwood, of Chelsea, has accepted a call from the Beaconsfield and district Congregational Church, and expects to begin his work in July.7
  • 21 Jan 1932: One of the worst bush fires in the memory of the oldest residents occurred here on Friday and Saturday, when a devastating fire swept over the district. On Friday, a fire, which had been burning in the scrub, fanned by a strong north wind, menaced the residence of Mr. McMillan, and in response to a call for help, about 50 men were soon engaged in a fierce fight to save the house and outbuildings. This they managed to do, and the fire then jumped the main road and threatened the residence of the Misses McLean; a break was burned, and the house was safe. On Saturday morning another fire commenced near Miss McLean’s boundary fence, and soon the residences of Messrs. Blair, Boker and Gilpin, and a number of others were in danger. A large band of willing workers managed to save the houses, but unfortunately they could not save the fine lemon orchard of Mr. McMillan, which was destroyed, also a week-end residence of Mr. Harkins. The heat was so great when the place got alight that it was im possible to get near it. In the after noon a sudden change of wind to the south caused the township to be menaced, and a desperate call for help was sent out, and in reply volunteers from Berwick, Narre Warren and Dandenong came to augment the local Bush Fire Brigade, until there were over 200 men, under the direction of Constable Barrett, and other leaders, engaged in the desperate effort to save the homes of Madame Montigue, Messrs. McBride, McDonald, Harvey-Smith, Rev. T. Greenwood, Robinson, J. Campbell, Major Campbell, Miss Elliott, J. Deville, C. Ellis, Claydon, Wright, Binding and Brown. The worst fight was at “Kyogle,” Mr. McDonald’s house; at one time it was felt that this fine residence would go, but the determined fight put up by the willing workers saved it. Here it was that anxiety was felt for one band who had become surrounded by flames, but they managed to get clear, although some of them succumbed to heat and smoke after getting out. The fine garden and plantation of Major Campbell was swept by the fire, despite the efforts of the workers, and hundreds of pounds worth of valuable plants and trees were destroyed, and the fine house was only saved by the superhuman efforts of the fire fighters. Miss Elliott’s house got alight, and part of the roof had to be stripped off before the fire could be put out. Mr. Ellis had the fence and pavilion attached to his tennis court destroyed, and the fire swept through his orchard, only being stopped within a few feet of the house. The house of Mr. Wright was saved by burning a break, as was Mr. Brown’s house and lemon orchard.
On Sunday afternoon a small fire developed in Salisbury Gully, but it was soon got under control; whilst this was being put out an urgent call for help came from “The Towers,” Mr. Berglund’s property. A large body of men were rushed out, and the fire was got under control before very much damage was done. On Sunday a fire, which had started on the Saturday in Cordner’s Gully, crossed the Officer rd., and threatened the orchard of Mr. F. Love, but it was kept out, and, with the exception of the loss of some fencing, not very much damage was done. Country Fire Authority, Charles Alexander Berglund, Frederick Duncan Love, Olive May Elliott, Jessie Mabel McLean, Agnes Margaret 'Nessie' McLean, David McDonald, Major Charles William Campbell, Thomas Gilpin, John Harkins, Erdmuthe Fredrica Marianne Harvey-Smith, William John Harvey-Smith, Mabel Lilian Mortagne, David Norman McBride, Walter Fergus Robinson, James Cuming Campbell, Jeanne Shepherd Deville, John Hayman Thomas Ellis, James William Goff Claydon, Colin Wright, John 'Pop' Binding, Walter Henry Brown, Thomas Orr McMillan, Isaiah Joseph Cordner8
  • 8 Nov 1934: The Rev. Mr. Greenwood and Mrs. Greenwood have gone to Dromana for their annual holiday. Mr. Smith, of North Clyde, has generously offered to conduct services for Mr. Greenwood during his absence.9

Berwick community worker Helen Hudson was awarded a gilt rosette for 60 years of service to Red Cross. Mrs Hudson had served the entire 60 years with the Berwick Upper Beaconsfield unit. Other members to receive long service awards at the annual meeting were Glad Mitchell and Nancie Gower - both recognized for 30 years of service. The unit was formed in 1914 by seven ladies, including Elizabeth Thomas, the wife of Gazette founder Albert Edward Thomas. Re-elected president Barbara Jackson said in her annual report that it was increasingly difficult for volunteer groups to attract new members. She said it was of great concern to volunteer organisations that with the new millennium had come a new age of litigation. The executive remained unchanged, with Mrs Jackson at the helm, Jenny Coventry and Helen Fyfe deputy chairs, Gyneth Troy treasurer and Mary Kelly secretary. Barbara Forster Jackson18

Death-Notice20 Aug 2008 HUDSON, William H.
We too are saddened by Bill's passing and add our sincere condolences to the many tributes to our dear friend and colleague.
Bill, you were an inspiration to us, as you were to so many. We remember your warm welcome in 1978 when we moved to Berwick with a growing family, and valued your support and counsel in the years which followed.
Our hearts are touched.
A true and generous Pioneer who with others, founded the unique spirit of community of which we were privileged to become a part.
A sad occasion which reminds us of our own mortality, but also of life enriched by the precious gift of friendship. We recognise a life well lived, memories to treasure.
We extend out sympathies to Geoff, Mary and family.
Vale Bill.
Eleanor and Bill Peeler - Harkaway.

HUDSON, William (Bill).
Foundation, generous and respected member of Berwick/Pakenham Historical Society.
-We will miss his knowledge and stories.

HUDSON, Bill.
Berwick has lost one of its great characters, a man of enormous integrity who would do all he could to help others. It was an absolute pleasure knowing Bill for over 30 years; his word was his contract, his fairness never questionable. There was not much Bill didn't achieve in his life and when others tired Bill was still going strong pushing for what he believed was right.
There are many legacies of Bill's not all of them publicly known. He was a great man who just thought he was like everyone else. That he wasn't.
RIP Bill Hudson.

  • 20 Aug 2008: A BERWICK identity and former mayor of the City of Berwick was farewelled on Monday
William (Bill) Hudson was born on 28 October 1914 and died last Monday aged 93.
Bill served the Berwick community through a range of activities and was particularly influential in maintaining the site of the old Berwick Primary School, now Pioneers Park.
Bill first came to Berwick in 1938 but the World War II intervened and he joined the Merchant Navy.
He travelled across the seas but enjoyed some interesting experiences whenever the ship came into port Bill retired in 1945 to farm at Cranbourne and Upper Beaconsfield, where the equestrian centre is now located, and also to establish a business that involved ownership of three cartage trucks, a rotary hoe and a grader.
His business included the construction of farm tracks and driveways and the cartage of aggregate from the Berwick Quarry to the jobs he was undertaking.
After subdivision and sale of the farm at Upper Beaconsfield, Bill entered real estate and established W H Hudson Real Estate in Berwick, which turned out to be a successful business.
It was in the role as proprietor of W H Hudson that Bill became totally involved in community affairs.
He saw a need for the provision of finance for housing to young people and, as a consequence, was instrumental in establishing the Berwick Cooperative Society and later the Kingsway Building Society.
Both of these organisations provided a much-needed service to homebuyers.
Bill was known to be a generous and innovative financier.
Friends told of one example when a couple could not come up with a deposit for a home.
Bill, on finding out that they had 300 chickens, suggested the chickens could be the deposit.
They accepted that proposition and Bill took the chickens as the deposit.
During the celebration of Bill's life, friends also said he delivered a donation of furniture to a woman and her children who were living in one of his houses.
Bill also collected a sizeable amount of cash and gave it to the lady in a bundle and said, "you'll be needing this".
Bill joined the Berwick Rural Fire Brigade in 1948 and progressed through the ranks to be captain for eight years from 1952 to 1960.
He was a councillor of the City of Berwick from 1973 to 1981 and was mayor during 1970 and 1980.
Bill was an active participant of the Berwick Show Society from 1950 to 1975.
He was also an active member of the Rotary Club of Berwick and was recognised for his more than 40 years service to Rotary by the granting of the sapphire pin.
Bill was closely associated with the Berwick RSL sub-branch for more than 60 years.
He recently received the Meritorious Medal from the RSL in recognition of this service.
Bill and his wife, Helen, were keen members of the Berwick-Pakenham Historical Society and Helen held the position of president for a number of years.43

  • 10 Jul 1974: SPENT HIS LIFE IN WOOL TRADE
Mr Harry Harland Hudson, of Berwick, who died on July 3, had spent a very full life, which took him to all parts of the world.
Born at Beechworth he was only three months old when with his parents he went to England. They returned to take up residence in Melbourne when he was eight years of age.
He attended Melbourne Grammar School and then went to Maudlyn College, at Oxford University.
After leaving college he entered the wool trade at Bradford. He returned to Australia and was for many years in the employ of Dalgety's in Melbourne and Queensland. Whilst in Queensland his duties included visits to various stations in the outback, at first in a horse drawn vehicle and later travelling by car over unmade and often unmarked roads. These trips to the outback would take him days and sometimes weeks at a time. Many were the tales he could tell of conditions in the pioneering areas of all parts of Australia.
Returning to Melbourne in 1925, he entered the wool trade on his own account and engaged in that very successfully until his retirement about ten years ago, when he came to reside at Berwick. As a wool broker he visited many countries.
Highly regarded by all who knew him, he will be sadly missed by many friends over a wide area. He is survived by his wife, son (Cr Bill Hudson, of Berwick) and daughter, Barbara, (Mrs Coffey, of Melbourne).
The funeral took place at Springvale Crematorium last Friday, Rev. T. Waters conducting the services.23

  • 21 Dec 1933: OBITUARY WM. J. HOLMES.
The death of Mr. William J. Holmes, at the age of 67 years, occurred at his residence, “Clovelly,” Beaconsfield Upper, on Saturday, December 9. The deceased, who was born at Wagga, New South Wales, went to the Glen Wills and Omeo district when a very young man, and for some years followed the occupation of a miner there. He also worked at the famous Mount Lyell mine (Tasmania) as a shift boss, for a time. Coming to Beaconsfield about 20 years ago, he followed various occupations, until two years ago, when his health gave way, and he was an invalid from then until the time of his death. He married a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Nixon, and leaves a widow, four daughters and three sons to mourn their loss. The funeral took place in the Berwick cemetery on Sunday.
The Rev. T. Greenwood conducted the service at the graveside, and the funeral arrangements were carried out by Mr. J. Grant, of Berwick.13

NOTE

Some family sections show only the children who were associated with Upper Beaconsfield.

Some individuals may be featured because members of their family were associated with the Upper Beaconsfield area, even though they themselves never lived here.
