  • 1 Oct 1913: Mr Humphrey Davy died at Berwick on Saturday, at the age of 65 years. Deceased was a well-known pastoralist in Riverina and recently sold out his large station property at Balranald.8
  • 2 Oct 1913: Berwick. Mr Humphrey Davy, of "Kippenross," died on Saturday last and was buried in the local cemetary on Sunday. The Rev. A. J. Cole officiated at the grave side and Mr J. Grant carried out the mortuary arrangements. The deceased, who was a comparatively recent arrival here from New South Wales, where he followed pastoral pursuits, was widely known. He was of genial disposition and took a live interest in matters connected with the town. His sudden death from tonsilitis-bronchitis came as a shock to his numerous friends, many of whom had met in Melbourne a few days before. He leaves a widow and family to mourn their loss.9

    I wonder if you would be interested in the following story.
    In recent months it must have been obvious to anyone driving along Clyde Road in Berwick that the land behind the great cypress pine trees at No. 121 is being cut up for development.
    Unfortunately the lovely old weatherboard home, built around the turn of the century and known as Brentwood is to be demolished and another little piece of Berwick's history will slip away unnoticed.
    Tucked away at the end of its long driveway, Brentwood is not visible from the road and has largely escaped attention, although the adjacent housing estate has been called by the same name.
    In 1912, however, the property at 121 Clyde Road was called Kippenross - distinct from Kippenross House which is part of St Margaret's complex, and was occupied by the Davy family newly arrived from drought stricken Balranald in New South Wales.
    Humphry Davy, a distant relative of Sir Humphry Davy, inventor of the miner's lamp, his wife Mercy and their nine children looked forward to the opportunities offered by Berwick's greener pastures and soon settled into their new life here.
    While the Davy boys, Humphry junior, Cyril and Arthur began the task of planting the many trees that still line the property and driveway today, Humphry senior set about stocking his paddocks with sheep with the intention of building up a sheep station like Glen Dee, the station the family had left behind in Baranald and which is still in operation today. As Berwick had no public hall, Humphry Davy planned to build one and had plans drawn up in readiness.
    However the winter that year was one of the wettest on record and within ten short months before Humphry could put his plans info action he fell victim of pneumonia from which he did not recover.
    Left to carry on, Mercy Davy was naturally anxious to keep her young family about her and while the younger children were still being taught by the governess who had come down from Balranald with them, Mercy began plans for their secondary education.
    With her boys established as borders at Brighton Grammar School it seemed logical for the two youngest girls Myrtle and Cynthia, to follow their oldest sister (also named Mercy and later to become Mrs Charles Greaves) to board at Presbyterian Ladies College, then in East Melbourne.
    However Mrs Davy was reluctant to send any more of her girls away. It was time Berwick had a college for young ladies, and a branch of PLC would be very suitable. With this object in mind Mercy Davy canvassed other mothers in the area to discuss the idea and in due course a founding committee was formed with Mrs Davy one of the six mothers.
    As a result of their efforts, in 1920 the Berwick Branch of the Presbyterian Ladies College, named Presbyterian Girls School, was opened, on the site where St Margaret's now stands.
    Mrs Myrtle Martyn (nee Davy) second youngest of the Davy girls and now 95 years old, is still living in Berwick and remembers well being one of the first 'day girls' to attend one of Berwick's brand new girls schools.
    Although no formal recognition has ever been made of the Davy name, Mrs Martyn is justly proud of her mother's part in the school's beginning.
    Mrs Martyn is saddened to know that her childhood home must yield to the demands of progress. In its grander days Kippenross/Brentwood supported servant's quarters and a workmen's dining room as well as the usual quota of stables and out buildings. The interior of the house, with its timber panelling and marble fireplaces with carved overmantles was a fine example of its type and it is ironic to note that while the genuine article is being demolished, the federation style has never been more popular, with copies in various sizes popping up wherever new estates are being established.     I came across this letter the other day from the Pakenham Gazette of May 6, 1998. It was written by Elsie Hoare of Berwick about the Davy family who lived at Kippenross, later renamed Brentwood , property in Clyde Road and the establishment of the Berwick Presbyterian Girls School in 1920. The letter is about an interesting part of Berwick's history. It's a bit hard to read so I have transcribed it. (Heather Arnold)

    W S Keast, stock and station agent, Queen's House, Queen's street, Melbourne reports having sold on behalf of Mrs M. Davy of Berwick, the property known as Kippenross, containing 200 acres, situated about one mile from the Berwick railway station, on the main road to Cranbourne. The land consists chiefly of black and grey soil, rich in character, together with a beautiful bungalow homestead of nine rooms with gas and water laid on. There are lawns and gardens and plantation of trees round the homestead. In addition, there are fine stables and outbuildings, and motor garage. The property was purchased by a Melbourne syndicate.10

Anecdote*Ciril Nelson Davy was born in 1902 at Balranald, NSW, son of Humphrey Davy and Mercy Jane (nee) Jacka. He married Marjory Postle (nee) Irving in 1923 and they were living at Wangaratta by 1929 when their first child was born. They then moved to the Alexandra District, living at Whanregarwen by 1936 and Cathkin by 1937 (where they ran a Hereford stud). Ciril ran as a candidate for the Alexandra Shire Elections in 1936 and attracted a high number of votes when compared to his next rival - Cr Murray who was re-elected. He was a Director of the Yea and Mansfield Dairy Co. and a member of the War Memorial Committee. He was a Shire Councillor after the 1939 Bushfires and helped set up the Bushfire Relief Fund. He served on the committee of the Yarck Football Club and presented Mr and Mrs Allan Halligan an inscribed coffee pot when they left the district. He was a member of the sub-committee for the Alexandra Hospital in the lead up to the opening of the newly constructed Alexandra District Hospital on 17 August 1940. Also in 1940, he supported having dogs identified by a disc on their collars as a large number of lambs were being killed each year. In 1941 he championed having a lock on the side door of the Shire Hall to stop people gaining free entry to paid events. He was a generous supporter of community events and served as Chairperson on the Shire Finance Committee and the Saleyards Committee. He spoke at the opening of the new bowling green in Leckie Park on 6 December 1941 and served on the committee of the Yarck Red Cross. In December 1943 he moved to have full minutes taken at all council meetings and in March 1946, he defended himself admirably in a open public letter. In May 1947 he was elected first Chairman of the Upper Goulburn Regional Committee which was appointed by the State Government to develop Mt Buller. In 1953 Ciril was endorsed by the Country Party for the seat of Indi during the Federal Election. He was first cousin to WWI VC Winner Albert Jacka. Ciril died on 29 August 1987 at Shepparton and was buried at the Berwick Cemetery.1

    SIR—In justice to myself as the surveyor appointed by the company to see that the works were carried out according to specifications, I cannot allow Mr Rennick’s report to go unchallenged. In the first place, Mr Rennick was not (as far as I am aware) asked to give his opinion on the tramway line, but merely to decide whether the specifications, had been adhered to. I contend that they have; and would like to know whether Mr Rennick was supplied with a copy of the specifications before going round the lines. I am quite well aware that the specifications should never have been accepted, for the proverbial coach and six can be driven through them anywhere; but they were accepted, and the contractor is justified by them in doing everything which has been done. Mr Rennick says the line in some places is 12 inches above roadway; but as a matter of fact the top of the rail in the highest portion of line is 4½ inches above crown of roadway, and the specification says—“Where the macadam is not of sufficient depth for a good foundation gravel or mine refuse may be added to give a good foundation without excavating.” Now, the portion of the line which is creating all the furore, namely, that portion opposite the tannery, has been laid along the side of the road, where there is no macadam, and the contractor has done exactly what the specification empowers him to do. If this portion of roadway were made up to tramway level, the same as has been done in Ripon street, it would be a far better street than it has ever been. Mr Rennick complains of the quality of the sleepers, but there is nothing in the specifications as to quality, it simply says they are to be sawn timber of red gum or box 6½ feet long and 7x 4 inches. In conclusion, I would beg to point out that it was unfair for Mr Woods, the City Council's engineer, to accompany Mr Rennick and point out the matters complained of.—Yours, &c., ROBERT ALLAN, Surveyor.

  • 21 Jan 1932: One of the worst bush fires in the memory of the oldest residents occurred here on Friday and Saturday, when a devastating fire swept over the district. On Friday, a fire, which had been burning in the scrub, fanned by a strong north wind, menaced the residence of Mr. McMillan, and in response to a call for help, about 50 men were soon engaged in a fierce fight to save the house and outbuildings. This they managed to do, and the fire then jumped the main road and threatened the residence of the Misses McLean; a break was burned, and the house was safe. On Saturday morning another fire commenced near Miss McLean’s boundary fence, and soon the residences of Messrs. Blair, Boker and Gilpin, and a number of others were in danger. A large band of willing workers managed to save the houses, but unfortunately they could not save the fine lemon orchard of Mr. McMillan, which was destroyed, also a week-end residence of Mr. Harkins. The heat was so great when the place got alight that it was im possible to get near it. In the after noon a sudden change of wind to the south caused the township to be menaced, and a desperate call for help was sent out, and in reply volunteers from Berwick, Narre Warren and Dandenong came to augment the local Bush Fire Brigade, until there were over 200 men, under the direction of Constable Barrett, and other leaders, engaged in the desperate effort to save the homes of Madame Montigue, Messrs. McBride, McDonald, Harvey-Smith, Rev. T. Greenwood, Robinson, J. Campbell, Major Campbell, Miss Elliott, J. Deville, C. Ellis, Claydon, Wright, Binding and Brown. The worst fight was at “Kyogle,” Mr. McDonald’s house; at one time it was felt that this fine residence would go, but the determined fight put up by the willing workers saved it. Here it was that anxiety was felt for one band who had become surrounded by flames, but they managed to get clear, although some of them succumbed to heat and smoke after getting out. The fine garden and plantation of Major Campbell was swept by the fire, despite the efforts of the workers, and hundreds of pounds worth of valuable plants and trees were destroyed, and the fine house was only saved by the superhuman efforts of the fire fighters. Miss Elliott’s house got alight, and part of the roof had to be stripped off before the fire could be put out. Mr. Ellis had the fence and pavilion attached to his tennis court destroyed, and the fire swept through his orchard, only being stopped within a few feet of the house. The house of Mr. Wright was saved by burning a break, as was Mr. Brown’s house and lemon orchard.
    On Sunday afternoon a small fire developed in Salisbury Gully, but it was soon got under control; whilst this was being put out an urgent call for help came from “The Towers,” Mr. Berglund’s property. A large body of men were rushed out, and the fire was got under control before very much damage was done. On Sunday a fire, which had started on the Saturday in Cordner’s Gully, crossed the Officer rd., and threatened the orchard of Mr. F. Love, but it was kept out, and, with the exception of the loss of some fencing, not very much damage was done.
