  • 12 Nov 1965: DEATH OF MRS. JESSIE BEGG
With much regret we record that Mrs. Jessie Begg, of Upper Beaconsfield, passed away after a short Illness.
Mrs. Begg was born at Boronia 78 years ago and with her husband came to Upper Beaconsfield from Mulgrave 35 years ago.
Apart from her home her chief interests were the Congregational Church and Guild. Her gracious
friendly nature won her a host of friends.
Her husband pre-deceased her exactly 12 1/2 years ago, but she is survived by her sons — Colin (Geelong), Sam and Don (Upper Beaconsfield) — and daughters, Edna (Mrs Cox, Thornbury) and Flora (Mrs Graeme, Moorabbin) and we join in extending sympathy to them.
The funeral took place at Berwick Cemetery on Monday of last week, following a service at Garnar and Son's funeral Chapel, Dandenong. The services were conducted by Rev. G. Bence.16

  • 4 May 1962: KITCHEN TEA AT UPPER BEACONSFIELD
THE MAIN assembly hall and adjoining supper room were transformed into a colorful garden setting with bowls of lovely autumn flowers, when a large crowd gathered recently to honor one or Upper Beaconsfield's most popular residents, Mrs. Robert Graeme (the former Miss Flora Begg) on the eve of her marriage.
Flora has been closely connected with the hall committee for many years; being one of the instigators in the move to build the new supper room and she has also been a wonderful worker for the Upper Beaconsfield Church.
An employee of Barker's Park and Green's Cool Store, she was entertained by friends on the start when she terminated her services there and was presented with a dainty pair of vases as a wedding gift.
The evening at the assembly hall took the form of a tango and olive kitchen tea. Dancing was enjoyed to Woods' Orchestra and Mr. George Preston was M.C.
The presentation of the selection of lovely gifts to Flora and Bob was made by Cr. Kilvington, who warmly voiced best wishes for their future happiness.
The guests of honor thanked their many friends for making such a delightful evening possible.
A delicious home-made supper wns served by the local ladies. Robert McDonald Graeme11

  • 15 Dec 1917: OBITUARY. MR PETER DRUMMOND.
Mr Peter Drummond, another old and highly-respected farmer in the Ashburton County, passed away at the Ashburton Hospital this morning. The deceased gentleman was born at Stirlingshire, Scotland, and came to New Zealand in the late 60s. In 1877 he settled in the Rakaia district, where he took up land. Later, he acquired the Corwar Estate from Mr J. Cathcart Wason and farmed it successfully until his death. Deceased was looked upon as a model farmer. Many years ago he put into practical form a scheme to harness water brought from the Rakaia River to supply electric power for driving the stationary machinery on the farm, and also lighting his homestead. Deceased was for some years a member of the Mount Hutt Road Board, and was also a member of the Lauriston and Lyndhurst school committees. In the early days he was an exhibitor of Border Leicester sheep at the Ashburton A. and P. shows, and was also a member of the society. He established a flock of Border Leicesters in 1887. About three weeks ago he was obliged to enter the Ashburton Hospital, where he underwent two operations. He leaves a grown-up family of six sons and four daughters. Mrs Drummond pre-deceased her husband by 22 years.7

(Mentioned) Village BellSep 1988 HISTORICAL SOCIETY
Further to the article about Upper Beaconsfield's old orchards in the May 1988 issue, Stan & Beryl Hamilton have kindly added the following information about the orchard numbered 52 in the article.
Mr. Bunt, the Manager of Toomuc Valley orchards, bought "Springfield" in Berglund Road. He cleared it and planted apple trees in the late 1890's, and in his spare time around 1902 he built the homestead and lived there. E.C. Hamilton bought the property in 1925 and worked the orchard until his death in 1961. It was divided between two sons, E.G. Hamilton and the present resident S.P. Hamilton. E.G. Hamilton's portion was sold to Parris, the orchard was taken out, and the property sold to the present owner, S. Sheary.17
Village Bell*Dec 1988 ORCHARD HISTORY.
The man who planted the late Ted Hamilton's orchard was Mr. R. H. BUNT, not HUNT as stated. He did it at weekends after putting in a 48 hour week at Toomuc Valley orchard, then owned by one of the Kitchen Brothers, of whom there were three.
Between them they held a chain of properties from Toomuc Valley to Berglund Road. One planted the orchard (280 acres originally), another who loved the bush untouched built "Caversham Heights" and the third built "The Towers" and established the marvellous garden which used to surround it. They also made soap.
One of the Bunt's daughters married E. W. (Bill) Harris who lived in "Gwenelg" later owned by the late Don Sutherland and worked the orchard which was there. Another married Bill Lorimer who had an orchard, in Leppitt's Road. I think their son still lives there., Edward William Harris William Kenworthy (Bill) Lorimer18

  • 12 Mar 1903: PAKENHAM, March 7. A terrible accident happened about 8 p.m. yesterday to a man named Immanuel Fritzlaff. He had been engaged erecting a large shed at Mr. Grant's orchard, North Pakenham. The shed is lit with acetylene gas. A drum of carbide containing lowt. had been obtained some days previously, and last night Mr. Grant sent one of his employees, named Bunt, to open the drum. He did not know anything about it, and asked Fritzlaff to open it for him. Fritzlaff was smoking at the time, and bent over the drum to open it, when a terrible explosion occurred. Part of the drum, as it flew up, caught the unfortunate man on the chin, and practically cut the left side of his face away, the sight of the left eye being totally destroyed.40
  • 2 Sep 1903: Two new houses have been built here recently, one a handsome brick house for Dr. Bevan, one what is known as the Big House Hill; and the other a neat wooden villa for Mr. Bunt, near the Tower. It is rumored that a well known local resident has purchased a block of land close to the Post Office, where he purposes erecting a villa in the near future. The alteration of the time of running our early morning train is meeting with a good deal of opposition here, as it is con sidered if the alteration is made that our district as a summer resort will suffer. At present the train allows the business man to reach town in time for business, but if it is altered from 7.15 to 8.15 it will mean that be will just reach town an hour too late. I believe that a petition has already been forwarded to the traffic manager asking him to allow the time to remain as at present. I am pleased to record that Mr. W. H. Goff head teacher at the local Grammar School has completely recovered from his recent indisposition, and is now able to take charge of his school again. The proposed euchre tournament which is to take place on Friday, 4th September, promises to be great success. We have had a great quantity of rain lately, and fine weather is needed now, as our orchardists are beginning to talk about spraying, and that is a job that cannot be done in wet weather. Upper Beaconsfield, Rev Dr Llewelyn David Bevan William Henry Goff41
  • 21 Jan 1914: UPPER BEACONSFIELD. Mrs Bunt of Upper Beaconsfield, met with a painful accident last week. When driving with her husband, near their own place, the vehicle was capsized down a gully and the occupants thrown out. Both were badly bruised and Mrs Bunt had a rib broken. The jinker was badly damaged. Anne Elizabeth Hunt42
  • 23 Dec 1915: BELGIAN OFFICERS ENTERTAINED. The officers and cadets from the ship L'Avenir, now berthed in Melbourne, have been the guests of Captain Rushall at Llangower, Beaconsfield, since Saturday. On Saturday the visitors were entertained in the public hall by a concert. They were most cordially welcomed by a large gather ing of residents. On Sunday afternoon a large crowd assembled at Llangower to witness the unfurling of the Belgian flag. Captain Rushall explained that the outlook on which the Belgian flag rested had been recently erected as a memento of the visits of Belgian citizens on former occasions. Monday was spent by a trip to Nobelius's nursery at Emerald with various bush picnics en route. On Tuesday the visitors were driven to Mr Bunt's orchard and entertained for the afternoon. They leave for Melbourne on Wednesday, and will then be the guests of Dr Crivelli. Alexander Rushall43
  • 5 Jan 1916: Mr R. H. Bunt met with an accident on Saturday last, resulting in a broken collar-bone. The accident took place on the sports ground. Mr Bunt was competing in one of the first events—tilting at the ring. On approaching the first post his horse became restive and the saddle slipped. Mr Bunt was thrown off, and fell on his shoulder. He was subsequently examined by Dr Griffith, who found that his collar-bone was broken. Notwithstanding the injury, Mr Bunt, who is one of the vice-presidents of the club, remained on the ground all the afternoon and assisted in carrying through the programme.44
  • 23 Sep 1925: BEACONSFIELD UPPER - Mr T Bunt has disposed of his property, home, and orchard to Mr H Hamilton, of New Zealand. Mr Bunt has purchased Mr R Stirling's orchard at Officer, where he intends to build and settle. Edwin Cecil Hamilton45
  • 30 Jun 1944: Obituary: By the death on Saturday last of Mr. Richard Henry Hunt, of Officer, the district loses one of its oldest and most highly esteemed residents. He had been in ill health for some months. Mr Bunt was born in Cornwall 76 years ago and came to Australia in 1898. The following year he took up residence at Toomuc Valley. Some three years later he purchased a property at Upper Beaconsfield, where he resided for 22 years before moving to Officer. Right throughout the district he was respected and admired, for both in public and private life he was known as a man with the highest principles and at all times ready to lend a helping hand where it was most needed. By his death many have lost a true friend, and all feel deeply for his widow, and daughters —Mrs. E. W. Harris, Berwick; Mrs. W. Lorimer, Pakenham; and Mrs. A. Henry, Moira, N.S.W. The funeral took place at Berwick Cemetery on Monday, Rev. C. Jones officiating. A Masonic service was conducted by Wor. Bros. J. W. Richards and R. W. Bailey, of the Berwick Lodge.46

  • 5 Jul 1923: Dance at Upper Beaconsfield.
At the invitation of Lt.-Col. and Mrs. G. H. Knox, a number of their friends from Upper Beaconsfield and the surrounding districts, and also Melbourne were present at the delightful dance held in the Assembly Hall, Upper Beaconsfield, on Friday evening, June 22. The guest of the evening was Miss K. Bird, cousin of the hostess, who is on a visit from England, and the dance was given in honor of her twenty-first birthday. The supper room of the hall was converted into a cosy lounge, with easy chairs, carpets, and a glowing fire. Bridge tables were provided for non-dancers. On a large table in the supper-room was arranged a buffet supper.
The hall was gaily decked with cerise and violet streamers festooned from a centrepiece arranged with hoops of paper flowers of the same color and greenery. Tall oriental lamps and festoons of greenery, with cerise flowers, made a very effective screen round the dias, on which the musicians were seated. Mr. K. R. Pinkerton (of Berwick) was responsible for the artistic decorations of the hall. At 10 p.m. the guests retired to Salisbury House, opposite the hall, to partake of a sit-down supper.

(Mentioned) Village BellDec 1988 ORCHARD HISTORY.
I think their son still lives there.22

A very successful entertainment in aid of the funds of the local Dramatic Club was held on New Year's eve, when there was a good attendance and about £6 was realised. The club staged a comedietta entitled "The Matrimonial Post," and the various parts were well sustained. Other items made the whole an interesting programme. An enjoyable dance followed.
An American tournament was played under the auspices of the local Tennis Club om Boxing Day. There was a good entry, and the tournament provided some close and exciting games. The winners were Mr Brunosky and Miss K. Bunt. The profit is to go to the Red Cross funds.19
