    THE MAIN assembly hall and adjoining supper room were transformed into a colorful garden setting with bowls of lovely autumn flowers, when a large crowd gathered recently to honor one or Upper Beaconsfield's most popular residents, Mrs. Robert Graeme (the former Miss Flora Begg) on the eve of her marriage.
    Flora has been closely connected with the hall committee for many years; being one of the instigators in the move to build the new supper room and she has also been a wonderful worker for the Upper Beaconsfield Church.
    An employee of Barker's Park and Green's Cool Store, she was entertained by friends on the start when she terminated her services there and was presented with a dainty pair of vases as a wedding gift.
    The evening at the assembly hall took the form of a tango and olive kitchen tea. Dancing was enjoyed to Woods' Orchestra and Mr. George Preston was M.C.
    The presentation of the selection of lovely gifts to Flora and Bob was made by Cr. Kilvington, who warmly voiced best wishes for their future happiness.
    The guests of honor thanked their many friends for making such a delightful evening possible.
    A delicious home-made supper wns served by the local ladies. Margaret Flora Begg6

    BERWICK; Tuesday.— On Saturday night a motor cycle, driven by G. Hudson, of Beaconsfield, crushed into four pedestrians on the Princes Highway, Berwick. Maura Corry, of Berwick, was severely injured, having received the full impact. She was dragged several yards before the cycle tipped over. Miss Boyd, of Albert Park, was also knocked down. Mrs. Boyd and Mrs Corry escaped with bruises und shock. A passing motorist summonded medical aid. The driver of the cycle was badly cut about the face.8

Obituary11 Oct 1945 MR. BOB COVENTRY. It is with deep regret we announce the death of Mr. Bob Coventry, a well known Frankston identity, and one who saw service in the 1914-18 war and this war. The deceased was employed by Dyson's Motors. He had not enjoyed good health for some time. He was a member of the Frankston R.S.L.
His funeral took place on Monday afternoon at Frankston Cemetery. After a service at the Presbyterian Church by Rev. C. H. Ball, the funeral cortege proceeded down Bay Street. Returned men from last war and this war marched in front of the hearse.
The deceased served with the 24th battalion in World War 1, and with the A.G.H. in this war.
He is survived by a widow, three sons and four daughters. Deceased was given a soldier's funeral, and the coffin was draped with the Union Jack. Many beautiful floral tributes were received.
Mr. Coventry was held in high esteem, and sympathy is extended to his wife and family in their sad loss.7

    The wedding of Mr. George Alexander Davidson, second son of Major-General A. G. Davidson, Tara Chur, Glen Tunnel, Christchurch, New Zealand, and Miss Frances Edith Ashe, third daughter of the late Rev. M. A. Ashe, formerly of Blackwood, Bairnsdale, took place at St. Andrew's Church, Brighton, on Tuesday, January 4, the Verv Rev. the Dean of Melbourne, assisted by the Rev. Reginald Stephen, performing the ceremony. The bride, who was given away by her brother-in-law, Captain Murray, wore a soft white silk gown, with a long sash and ends; large white hat, with strings and trimmings of chiffon and real orange-blossom. The bridegroom's gifts were a pearl brooch and shower-bouquet. The bridesmaids were Miss Florence Ashe and the Misses Eva and Louise Murray. Miss Ashe wore a white and green muslin frock; and hat to match.
    The bridegroom's gift to her was a diamond bangle. The Misses Murray's frocks were of cream muslin and cream hats; and their gifts were pearl brooches. After the ceremony a reception was held at Corea, Middle Brighton, the residence of Miss Glasscott (aunt of the bride), only relatives being present. The Dean proposed the health of the bride. During the afternoon Mr. and Mrs. Davidson left for New Zealand, where the honeymoon will be spent, before proceeding to West Australia.     Driving in a jinker along the Prince's Highway, between Beaconsfield and Officer, on December 26, 1927, William Shadbolt, of Ward-street, South Melbourne, printer's machinist, was thrown out in consequence of a motor-car driven by Arthur B. Davy, of Upper Beaconsfield, hire-car proprietor, striking the jinker in the rear. Just before the impact Davy's motor-car had collided with one owned by Miss Alice Bullman, of Narre Warren North, motor-car proprietor.
    Before Judge Wasley, in the Criminal Court yesterday, Shadbolt brought an action claiming £1,000 damages jointly from Davy and Miss Bullman. Included in the sum was £88/7/6 medical expenses and loss of wages. Shadbolt pleaded that he had a hurricane lamp on his vehicle. Night had fallen at the time of the accident. Davy was negligent in that he had driven at an excessive speed, that he had attempted to pass the junker when another motor-car was about to pass, and had failed to apply the brakes or stop in sufficient time. The negligence urged against the driver of Miss Bullman's car was that no proper lookout was kept, that the car was driven on the wrong side of the road and at an excessive speed, and that the driver had failed to allow sufficient room for the car of the other defendant to pass. Shadbolt pleaded that he had sustained concussion of the brain, and was injured about the head and other parts of his body.
    Davy denied negligence, and alleged contributory negligence, in that Shadbolt had driven the jinker after dark without sufficient lights. Miss Bullman denied all the allegations in the statement of claim in so far as they implicated herself.
    Mr Magennis and Mr Stafford (instructed by Messrs W.B. and O. McCutcheon) appeared for the plaintiff. Mr Menzies (instructed by Mr J. P. Rhoden) appeared for Miss Bullman, and Dr Ellis (instructed by Messrs Hamilton, Wynne, and Riddell) appeared for Davy.

  • 15 Feb 1929: VERDICT FOR £470. JUDGMENT AGAINST CAR-OWNER. Second Defendant Succeeds.
    Judgment was entered against one of the defendants in the action in which William Shadbolt, of Ward-street, South Melbourne, printer's machinist, claimed £1,000 damages from Arthur B. Davy, of Upper Beaconsfield motor car proprietor and Miss Alice Bullman of Narre Warren North, motorcar proprietor. Shadbolt was driving a jinker along the Princes Highway between Beaconsfield and Officer on December 26, 1927, when he was thrown out of his jinker in consequence of a motor car driven by Davy striking the jinker in the rear. Just before the impact Davy' s motor-car had collided with one owned by Miss Bullman. Shadbolt took action against both Davy and Miss Bullman pleading negligence in each case. Both Davy and Miss Bullman denied negligence.
    Mr.Maginnis and Mr. Stafford (instructed by Messrs. W. B. and O. McCutcheon) appeared for plaintiff; Mr Menzies K.C., and Mr. Read (instructed by Mr. J. P. Rhoden) appeared for Miss Bullmans: and Dr. Ellis (instructed by Messrs. Hamilton, Wynne, and Riddell) appeared for Davy.
    The jury returned a verdict for plaintiff as against Davy, and assessed damages at £470. Judgement was entered for the amount with costs. Plaintiff was ordered to pay Miss Bullman's costs, but he was given the right to recover the amount from Davy. William Shadbolt14
