And there is a link between the two.
Ronald Damman is the third generation to carry on the old tradition, being a grandson of Gustav, one of the two brothers from Denmark, who, in the middle of the gold rush era, founded G. In 1953 he established his own tobacconist and mercers business in Berwick, adding a shoe department during the year.11

  • 13 May 1901: A very old colonist and city merchant, Mr. Edward Keep died at St Kilda on Saturday, aged 73. Born in Buckingham-shire, England, Mr. Keep, after a business experience in the hardware trade aquired in Birmingham, came to Victoria in the year 1853. For a period of upwards of 40 years from that date, at first in partnership with Mr Bishop, subsequently with the late Mr Richard Anderson and Mr Harcourt, and lately with his nephew, Mr John Francis Keep, and his son, Mr Ronald Keep, he established and carried on a successful hardware merchant's business. Early in 1873 Mr Keep retired from active business in the firm, and webt to live in England, always maintaining his connection with the colony by frequent visits. In 1882 he decided again to return to Melbourne, and was resident here at the time of the fire in October, 1899, which destroyed the stock and premises of the old firm of Edward Keep and Co. Mr Keep then decided not to re-engage in active business as a hardware merchant, but devote his attention to his other interests here. The deceased was a director of the London Bank of Australia Limited, a member of the Melbourne board of the British and Foreign Insurance Company, and was interested as a shareholder in other industrial and commercial businesses in Victoria. He took no active part in public life, but was for some years past the chairman of the Victorian Hardware Association, and was well and widely known among the mercantile community in Melbourne. Mr Keep was a widower, but leaves five children surviving him—Mr. Ernest E. Keep solicitor, Elizabeth-street ; Mr Ronald Keep ; Miss Keep, resident in London ; Mrs Whitney, Nebea, Coonamble, New South Wales ; and Miss Agnes Keep.14
  • 14 May 1901: The funeral of the late Mr. Edward Keep took place yesterday. The cortege left the residence of his son, Mr. Ernest Keep, Witchwood, South Yarra, and the burial was in the St. Kilda Cemetery. The funeral was largely attended by friends and relatives of the deceased, including Mr. Walter J. Keep of John Keep and Sons Limited, Sydney, by representatives of the financial and commercial community in Melbourne, and by many of the employees and staff of the old firm of Edward Keep and Co. The pall-bearers were Mr. F. S. Grimwade, M.L.C, Captain Currie, Mr. William Siddeley, Mr. Henry Meeks, Mr. Chas. Rennie, Mr. John A. Kitchen, Mr. John Watson, and Mr. George Rolfe. The funeral arrangements were carried out by Mr. W.G. Apps.15
  • 14 May 1901: Mr Edward Keep died at the George Hotel, St. Kilda on Saturday. Mr Keep was a well-known man in business circles, being head of the firm of ironmongers, Edward Keep and Sons, of Lonsdale street.16
  • 20 Mar 1911: OLD COLONISTS. EDWARD KEEP COTTAGES.
The grounds of the Old Colonists' Homes at Rushall-crescent, North Fitzroy, were gaily decorated with flags 'on Saturday afternoon in honour of the laying of the foundation stone of the Edward Keep cottages. The president and councillors of the Old Colonists' Association met Miss Agnes Keep and Messrs Ernest and Ronald Keep, the representatives of the donor of the cottages, at the main entrance to tho grounds, and conducted them to the site of the new buildings. After the laying of the foundation-stone by Miss Keep, the party adjouned to the marquee where refreshments were served.
The President (Mr James Grice), in proposing the health of Miss Agnes Keep, coupled with the toast the names of Messrs. Ernest and Ronald Keep and said that he could not expresss his indebtedness of the association to the late Mr Edward Keep for his generous gift of £3,000. The homes had been commenced years ago on a barren waste of ground. In no way was the association dependant on the Government. In Government securities it had something like £40,000 available for maintenance. All its securities were gilt edged und there was not a debt on the books.
Mr Ernest Keep responded to the toast on behalf of Miss Keep and Mr Ronald Keep.
Other toasts honoured were The Donors and Endowers of Cottages proposed by Mr D R McGregor and responded to by Mr A Dick, and "The Association proposed by the maior of Fitzroy (Councillor Reddan) and responded to by Mr. James Grice.17

  • 10 Apr 1920: The department got the championship in bulls and Mr Hordern in cow's. There were new exhibitors in Friesians, and as the Victorian Department of Agriculture recently established a stud visitors from this State displayed keen interest in these cattle, not the least being Dr Cameron, our Director of Agriculture. The cows looked business like. A New Zealander sent forward a string, but obtained few prizes. Messrs Flack and Sewell, of Berwick, Vic., secured two firsts. The championship in bulls went to the New South Wales department, with Mr A C. Lamond's American Importation as reserve. Mr Lamond'g Pride of Brundee was decorated with the champion ribbon in cows. Good Red Polls were paraded, New Zealand and the Australian Land Co. dividing the prizes. Sidney Valentine Sewell6
  • 11 Jun 1921: A GENEROUS GTFT. Messrs Flack and Sewell, Burnbank, Berwick, have offered as a prize a bull calf from their Friesian herd for the best essay on the "History of the Friesian Breed of Cattle and Its Influence on the Dairying Industry of the World." The essay is open to all students at the Dookie Agricultural College. This bull calf is stated to be worth 100 guineas. Sidney Valentine Sewell7
  • 25 Oct 1924: Messrs. Flack and Sewell, Burnbank Stud Farms, Berwick, report the death of their champion Friesian cow, Dominion Queen Mercedes, which suddenly collapsed shortly after giving birth to twin calves. This great daughter of Woodcrest Jo yielded 21,374lb. milk, 720lb. fat, in her last lactation period of 273 days, and was top cow in the Government herd test. She was also an animal of beautiful type, and in 1923 was first and champion at the Melbourne Royal Show. Her death is a great loss to the Friesian breed and to the dairying industry. Sidney Valentine Sewell8
  • 15 Aug 1925: There will now be three strong Friesian studs instead of the stud of Messrs. Flack and Sewell. Mr. Tweddle will carry on at Berwick and at Sunbury; Dr. Sewell will continue breeding Friesians at Road's End, Berwick; while Messrs. Flack and Gamble, whose properties adjoin, will probably carry on the Burnbank stud. There were 143 head of Friesians of various ages, divided up amongst the several partners. Sidney Valentine Sewell, Joseph Thornton Tweddle9
  • Nov 2003: Edwin Flack and the Berwick connection. Celebrating the 130th anniversary of the birth of Edwin Flack. 5th November 1873.
The bronze statue of Edwin Flack, located in Berwick, was erected to commemorate the centenary of Flack's success at the first modern Olympiad in Athens in 1896. Located in High Street, near the corner of Lyall Road, and directly opposite the Berwick Inn, it is situated on the reserve in the center of the road. Part of a project undertaken by the City of Casey's Edwin Flack Centenary Committee, the statue was unveiled on Sunday 16th June 1996 by John Landy, a former Olympian, and former world record holder for the mile.
The statue of Flack is mounted on a large block of granite upon which two plaques are attached. The first plaque, which faces the road, reads -
"EDWIN H FLACK. AUSTRALIA'S FIRST OLYMPIC GOLD MEDALIST
Edwin Flack was the sole Australian to compete in the first Modern Olympic Games in 1896 at Athens. Greece. Flack took part in five events. 800m, 1500m. and marathon (athletics) and in the tennis (singles & doubles). Flack was successful in winning the 800m and 1500m events.

Edwin Flack was an accountant and lived in Melbourne. Berwick, however was Flack's second home as he owned the farming property "Burnbank" located between Beaumont & Buchanan Roads. On this property with his partners Sir Sydney Sewell and later William Gamble, Flack established a most successful Friesian dairy herd from which he produced milk and cheese.
Edwin Flack was born in England in 1873, immigrated with his family to Australia in 1878, and following an eventful life died in 1935. Flack never married. Many charitable and welfare organisations, hospitals and research funds have benefited from his estate. He was buried at the Berwick Cemetery.
This statue of Edwin Flack by 'Smiley' Williams was erected in 1996 by the citizens of Berwick to mark the centenary of Flack's achievements in Athens."
The sculptor himself remains elusive, due mainly to his preference for anonymity and to be known as 'Smiley' Williams. The work is signed "'Smiley' Williams" and was possibly produced at The Meridian Foundry, the leading foundry for bronze works in Victoria. The only other known work of Williams in a publicly accessible position is that of his bronze 'Mr. Lizard and Gumnut Baby' situated at 'Dromkeen' at Riddells Creek.
Edwin Harold Flack was born on 5th November 1873 in Islington East, London, England, the son of Joseph Henry Flack and Marion (nee Smith). He arrived in Melbourne with his parents in September 1874 aboard the Durham. Flack excelled in distance running while a pupil at Melbourne Church of England Grammar School, becoming the One-Mile Champion of Australasia in 1893-94. He also competed in the 800m and the 3 mile event, placing fifth in the 3 mile. Flack left school to follow his father into a career in accounting, soon proceeding to London to further his education. While in London he decided to travel to Athens to represent Australia at the first modern Olympiad. Flack won the 800 and 1500 metres, and after his second gold medal was won with surprising ease Flack was dubbed "The Lion of Athens" and feted by royalty and ordinary Greeks alike. No Australian flag was available so the British flag was flown while Flack was presented with an olive wreath. Flack also competed in the tennis singles and doubles at the Athens Olympics but was beaten in the first rounds. Flack's diary, kept while he was in Athens, sheds light on the quiet unassuming personality behind the athlete, and is important as it gives an account of the games before the age of television and radio.
Returning to Australia after completing his education, Edwin joined his father in a partnership, Flack & Flack. He also succeeded his father to the Committee of Management of the Alfred Hospital, a position he held from 1918 until his death. In January 1917 Flack purchased the property at Berwick known as "Burnbank", and commenced a Friesian cattle stud and piggery. He entered a partnership with Dr. Sydney (later Sir) Sewell, and later with William Gamble, producing quality cheese and other dairy products. Suffering for many years from a heart complaint, Flack died on 10th January 1935 at East Melbourne aged 61, and was cremated at Fawkner Cemetery two days later. His ashes were buried in grave number a173 in the Church of England section of the Berwick cemetery almost one month later.
His estate was valued for probate at almost 44,000 pounds. Today the Marian & E H Flack Trust provides money for medical research, and support for families of deaf children amongst many things. Flack's statue is important at an international level, as recognition of Australia's first gold medalist and the fact that Australia is one of only three countries to have competed at every modern Olympiad. Flack's lone appearance at Athens is even more significant when his lack of training and lack of government support is considered. The recognition of Flack's significance to the Australian Olympic movement has increased since the centenary and the holding of the games at Sydney in 2000.10

Australian Dictionary of Biography

Edwin Harold Flack (1873-1935), athlete and accountant, was born on 5 November 1873 at Islington East, London, son of Joseph Henry Flack, accountant, and his wife Marian, née Smith. In 1878 the family migrated to Melbourne where Joseph established an accountancy firm. After education at Melbourne Church of England Grammar School, Teddy joined his father, then a partner in the firm of Davey, Flack & Co. In March 1895 he went to London to gain experience with Price, Waterhouse & Co., chartered accountants (whom he later represented in Australia), and graduated F.C.P.A. and F.S.A.A. (England). He returned to Melbourne in 1899. With his father and later his brother Henry he built up the firm of Flack & Flack, accountants, with branches in Sydney, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth, and Auckland and Wellington in New Zealand.
Flack was a director of several companies including (William) Howard Smith Ltd, Robert Harper & Co. Ltd, and Australian Iron and Steel Ltd. At his Burnbank stud farm near Berwick, he bred Friesian cattle. Following his father, Flack was on the committee of management of the Alfred Hospital from 1918 to 1935. He was a member of the Melbourne, Australian and Royal Melbourne Golf clubs. After suffering from heart trouble for a long time, he died after an operation on 10 January 1935, leaving an estate valued for probate at £43,855. He was unmarried.
Flack is remembered as the first Australian to win a gold medal at the Olympic Games. Before going overseas he was well known as an amateur athlete. In 1892 he founded the Melbourne Hare and Hounds Club. He was the one-mile champion of Australasia in 1893 and 1894, and had won several colonial championships. In England he joined the London Athletic Club and the Thames and the Hampton Court hare and hounds clubs. He ran often and quite successfully. Nevertheless newspaper reports of his presence in Athens for the revived Olympic Games in 1896, at which Australia was not officially represented, came as a surprise to his family who learned that he had taken a months holiday.
Flack decided to run both the 800 and 1500 metre races, and, even more enthusiastically, put his name down for the marathon. The favourites for the first two events were Lermusiaux of France and the American, Blake. Flack won his heat of the 800 metres convincingly. Next day was the 1500 metre race. Because of the roughness of the track and the tight corners, the pace soon slackened but as they started down the last straight Blake came like fury and almost levelled. But the Australian had his measure, pulling up fresh and strong in 4 minutes 33.2 seconds. The victory was popular because the Americans had been dominating the competitions. Two days later Flack became the favourite for the 800 metres final because Lermusiaux had withdrawn to concentrate on the marathon, and won easily in 2 minutes 11.9 seconds.
Later that afternoon he was in a coach travelling the dusty, stony road to Marathon; the journey took four hours. He fancied less and less the idea of returning on that track the next day, yet he knew he would regret it forever if he missed it. The longest distance he had previously run was ten miles on a grass surface.
The marathon started under a very hot sun in front of a huge and enthusiastic crowd. Lermusiaux bounded out in front; Flack at first chose to stay with the Greeks who had had most experience, but found the pace too easy. By the ten kilometre mark he had passed everybody but the leader. At thirty kilometres he passed Lermusiaux, who soon after quit the race; Blake had already done so. With six kilometres to go he was still in front but finding it very hard. A figure swept by. A Greek. He could not win now, but neither could he stop. He swayed from one side of the road to the other and eventually sagged to the ground. He was taken to the stadium by ambulance and was able to watch the finish; it was impossible to grudge the Greeks their victory.
For the rest of the week Flack was treated like royalty. A friend said, 'Why, you're the lion of all Athens'. He left to the accompaniment of bands and waving flags, returning by himself to London. His athletic career had culminated in those seven wonderful days when the Olympic spirit was resurrected in Athens that hot summer of 1896.11
