His unit, the 14th Battalion, 15th Reinforcement embarked from Melbourne on 14 Mar 1916, on board HMAT A68 Anchises. Village Bell*Mar 1981 Memories of Dewhurst
Several amusing incidents are recalled about the two soldier settlers, Kerr and Smith, such as the time when they were both spraying rows of fruit trees in their orchard, and, having arrived at opposite sides of the same tree, they drenched each other with copper sulphate solution. They had a temperamental International Harvester oil engine mounted on a four-wheeled cart; it was started by pulling on a rope wound around the fly-wheel, and when it fired, they ran for cover until they were sure it was safe to approach it again. • 25 Sep 1925: SOLDIER SETTLEMENT. Witnesses Fail to Appear.
When the Royal Commission on Soldier Settlement met to hear evidence from the settlers of the North Beaconsfield district yesterday there was no appearance of witnesses. The commission delayed its sitting for some time and was available until a late hour but the witnesses did not arrive.
It was stated when the commission visited North Beaconsfield in July that the soldier settlers there did not expect the commission, and asked to have their evidence heard at a later date. Believing that Show week would be a suitable time for the evidence to be heard, the commission gave 10 days' notice of its decision to hear the evidence in Melbourne on Show Day. No reply was received to the notice. Douglas Kerr19
  • 1 Mar 1926: DESTRUCTION OF TREES ON ROADS. TO THE EDITOR OF THE ARGUS.
Sir,-The wilful destruction of trees upon country road has lately been commented upon by several correspondents, and not without good reason. Property owners in the country have a bad habit of cutting out all or mose of the trees on adjacient roads. Sometimes they have the shire council's permission, often they have not. The wood is carted away, and all the rubbish is left upon the ground, where it is a certain menace for bush fires. it is a matter for great regret that the picturesque beauty of many of our mountain roads has been ruined by the acts of thoughtless people. Shire councils should see that men do not remove unnecessary timber when cutting fire breaks. There is little doubt that many bush fires have been started among the rubbish on the roads by careless travellers. If the Forestry department had sent out competent rangers through all the timber country to see that proper fire breaks were cut, we should not have experienced these horrible fires.—Yours, &c., MURRAY.
    North Beaconsfield, Feb. 25.20
  • 25 Mar 1927: DESTRUCTION OF TREES. TO THE EDITOR OF THE ARGUS.
Sir.—For the sake of our roads and its travel on the fine new roads between Beaconsfield and Emerald. Many of these people have little or no regard for the preservation of the beauties of nature. From North Beaconsfield to Emerald are many beauty corners, where the road touches the Cardinia and other creeks. One, in particular, near Crystal Park homestead, is a gem. A tiny brooklet joins with the Cardinia.
The fine old weeping willow makes a good background, and the tang in the atmosphere, from musk to lemon teatree, adds a fine edge to the appetites of many travellers. This time, however, not the public, but the North Beaconsfield Progress Association, is responsible for the partial de struction of this ideal resting-place. The old willow tree is gone. The destruction has caused much angry comment, because the association had no authourity to remove it so far as I can learn from the Berwick Shire Council.
    -Yours & c. "VERNIER"
    North Beaconsfield, March 22.21
  • 30 Mar 1927: DESTRUCTION OF BEAUTY SPOTS. TO THE EDITOR OF THE ARGUS.
Sir,-In reply to the letter by "Vernier," which appeared recently, I desire to say that the North Beaconsfield Progress Association has been in existence for three and a half years, and has done many things for the district from Emerald to Beaconsfield. It has never had even a whisper of depreciation before. Every resident of the district except three is a member. I was a member of the working bee at the spot mentioned by "Vernier," which is beautiful. It has the only good water available for a horse in a 16-miles' journey, and we are making a slight deviation to enable horses to have a drink. We removed some trees, including an old spindly willow, which was unavoidable. We have permission to remove trees under certain conditions from the Berwick Shire Council. It is part of a scheme which is being carried out after prolonged discussion to beautify that spot. We have planted 12 willow trees, and more are to be planted, A seat has been erected, and the spot, when finished, will satisfy even "Vernier". —Yours, &c.,
STANLEY SMITH, Upper Beaconsfield North, March 28.22
  • 17 Oct 1927: The superintendent of horticulture (Mr. J. M. Ward), accompanied by Mr. White, who is representing the Trade Commissioner in London, paid a visit to this district. The party inspected the orchards of Messrs. Smith and Kerr at North Beaconsfield in the morning. Many orchardists availed themselves of the opportunity of meeting the visitors. After lunch the party visited Mr. Lockey's orchard. In the evening Mr. Ward and Mr. White discussed with growers many matters of vital interest, particularly in regard to the export of apples. Mr. Ward will visit the district again on November 7 to further advise orchard ists, and will give a lantern lecture on American methods. Douglas Kerr, Percy Vernon Lockey23

WHEN Miss Joan Elizabeth (Bettie) Sturken, only child of Mrs. and the late Mr. J. F. Sturken, of “Gowrie,” Berwick, was married to Keith Stuart, elder son of Mr. and Mrs. S. K. Andrews, “Bimbimbie,” Beaconsfield Upper, at the Littlejohn Memorial Chapel, Scotch College, last Friday, she wore a beautiful veil of Brussels lace which had been worn by 16 other brides. • 8 May 1943: "IT IS A ——— " Miss Bettie Sturken, watching the plane through her binoculars, gives Miss Margaret Henry a description of a plane, and she takes it down before sending it to Headquarters.
One of the younger members of the post is Margaret Henry, who is 17; she gives several hours a week, and was on duty while I was there. She is managing entirely on her own her father's 350 acre property, on which are sheep and cattle. She told me, in matter-of-fact tones, of spending a day in the saddle, riding round the property inspecting waterholes, getting sheep and cattle out of the mud, or mending fences. "The bull gives me the most trouble," she said. "He has a dreadful habit of breaking fences and straying into the neighbours' fields. I am always chasing him, bringing him back, and mending the fence."
Margaret is young, slim, and attractive, with fair wavy hair, yet she trucks cattle and sheep to market, or tases delivery of them, and knows more about the land than a great many people. "Yes, I do practically all the work," she said. Sometimes I'm very busy working from early morning till late at night. If I get into any real difficulties I can always get in touch with my father. He is looking after my brother's property a short distance away while my brother is in the Army and I can get a man to help if necessary, but I can usually manage on my own. Once a week I ride into town and have a music lesson. That and the VAOC work, are about all I do, except look after the farm, and I think that is quite enough, don't you?" With her on duty - for there are always 2 people on duty at this VAOC post-was Bettie Sturken, her cousin, who is helping at home, and also looking after the younger children at the large school near the post. Margaret Helen Henry17

  • 9 Sep 1942: Car Smashes Into Eummemering Bridge
    UPPER BEACONSFIELD MAN SERIOUSLY INJURED
While driving home to Upper Beaconsfield at about 7 o’clock on August 28, Mr. Stewart K. Andrews crashed into the Eummemering Creek bridge on the Princess Highway and was seriously injured.
He was alone in the car at the time and it was not until a passing motorist came along that his plight was noticed.
Unconscious when picked up, he was hurried to the Dandenong and District Hospital where he was found to be suffering from two broken legs, concussion, internal injuries and shock. He was later removed to a city hospitar and was still unconscious yesterday.
The, car, a single-seater, hit the railing side on and was almodst a complete wreck. Fortunately it did not capsize, but screwed round before finally coming to a stop.
“The, worst wreck I have ever seen,” was how one of the wrecking crew described it. It was raining at the time of the smash and visibility was very poor.
Friends of the injured man hope to hear of an early improvement bn his critical condition.12

THE announcement that Mary Grant Bruce is returning to Victoria with her husband, Major Grant Bruce, and their son Jon will give great pleasure not only in her personal friends, but to the thousands of girls and boys who have read her novels of country life. Major and Mrs. Grant Bruce have been living at Bexhill-on-Sea, England, and Jon has studied farming. Their Gippsland friends no doubt will hope that they will settle among them in the district which has so often figured in Mary Grant Bruce's books.9

Australian Dictionary of Biography

BRUCE, MINNIE (MARY) GRANT (1878-1958), journalist and writer of children's books, was born on 24 May 1878 near Sale, Victoria, daughter of Eyre Lewis Bruce and his wife Mary (Minnie) Atkinson, née Whittakers. Her father, a surveyor, migrated to Melbourne from Cork, Ireland, in 1854, settling in Gippsland ten years later. Her mother was a daughter of a Welsh pioneer of the Monaro district, New South Wales. Minnie was fourth in a family of two boys and three surviving daughters.
Her first recorded literary effort was a precocious epic on an insane Czar, written at 7. Three years later she was editing her school magazine. More substantial literary success came when she won first prize in the Melbourne Shakespeare Society's annual essay competition in April 1895. A pupil at Miss Estelle Beausire's Ladies' High School, Sale, Minnie passed the matriculation examination later that year with honours in English, history and botany.
In 1898, in the Christmas supplement of the Melbourne Leader, her story, 'Her little lad' was published under the signature 'M.G.B.'. Following publication of 'Dono's Christmas' in the December 1900 supplement under the pseudonym 'Coolibah', she went to live in Melbourne, boarding at first and later as a 'bachelor girl' in a bed-sitting-room. After doing secretarial work, she joined the staff of the Age and the Leader and began contributing articles and short stories to Outpost, Table Talk, Lone Hand, Woman's World, Australasian Traveller, Woman, Southern Sphere and the Ballarat Evening Echo, claiming later that the only subject on which she had not expounded was 'dress'. Articles such as a series on Melbourne hospitals in Woman (1909) show a spontaneity and incisiveness rare in later works. The short stories brim with the 'exciting and pathetic incidents' praised by later reviewers of the Billabong books: mixtures of sentimentality and pathos, skittishness and stoicism, challenge and safety, relationships between social classes in which benign patronage and good-humoured servitude were balanced, all united by a philosophy of hard work.
Minnie also wrote patriotic verse but after seeing in print one effusion, performed in 1903 at an Empire Day demonstration of the Australian Women's National League, she 'put the paper in the fire, and have since kept to prose'. About this time she combined with other women to form the Writers' Club which later merged with the Lyceum Club.
Although she wrote many books, her most famous were the Billabong series, begun when she was writing weekly stories for the children's pages of the Leader, where A Little Bush Maid first appeared in serial form. The story proved so successful that the Linton family was launched. At her editor's suggestion she posted the completed novel to Ward, Lock & Co. in London where it was published in 1910 under the authorship 'Mary', regarded as more marketable than 'Minnie'. Other titles followed quickly. 'I was very firm about one point', she said in Table Talk in 1939, 'that there should be no love interest in them. I was more or less forced into marrying off Norah and Wally eventually, but beyond that I drew the line'. Reviewers applauded the clean, healthy, wholesome, pleasant, and purely Australian character of the saga. The public responded with joy. For the author it was 'no longer necessary to choose between a meal and a pot-plant'. During World War I her sister-in-law Lady Evelyn Seton wrote a pungent criticism of the series and its central family, advising their creator to break free; but the Lintons had become part of the national life, 'running our own show' as Jim Linton said in the foreword to Billabong's Luck. Billabong Riders, the fifteenth and last of the series, was published in 1942.
In 1913 Mary Grant Bruce had gone to London where English relations provided her with an introduction to Lord Northcliffe. She began writing articles for the Daily Mail. In 1914 she met a distant cousin, Major George Evans Bruce of the Norfolk Regiment, ten years her senior, who had served in the British Army in India and South Africa; he was also a writer of exotic melodramas and expert articles on fish and crustacea. They came back to Australia and were married at Holy Trinity Church, East Melbourne, on 1 July 1914, but their stay at the seaside, described by her in The Peculiar Honeymoon, was cut short by the outbreak of war. Bruce was soon called to duty by the War Office. They sailed in the troop-ship Nestor to Cork, where Bruce, proscribed from action by a strained heart, was to be second-in-command of the Dublin Fusiliers, training recruits. In the next three years Mary 'produced two babies and four books'. After the war, the family returned to Australia to settle at Traralgon, Gippsland.
Mary Grant Bruce continued to write for magazines while the Billabong series appeared. In 1926 she returned to full-time journalism for six months as acting editor of Woman's World. In 1927 the family moved to Omagh, Ireland, with permanent residence in mind. Soon after their arrival their younger son accidentally shot himself. They left Ireland, and the next twelve years were spent on the Continent and in the south of England. In 1939 they returned to Australia to settle their son on the land. During World War II Mary worked for the Australian Imperial Force Women's Association, sold her autograph at charity auctions for the war effort and broadcast three series of talks for the Department of Information.
She was a prolific letter-writer, and took copious notes of her 'European Wanderings', many of which were the basis for articles. Other notebooks contain detailed descriptions of the Australian landscape, impressive in their observation and immediacy. Her respect for Aboriginal traditions, expressed in her book of legends The Stone Axe of Burkamukk (1922), was unusual for her time. Some of her early articles, with their spirited criticism of feminine roles, show an incipient feminism which most contemporaries would not have shared. Much of her success, however, lies in the completeness with which she expressed the philosophy of her times.
Although much of her work was written in England, Mary Grant Bruce's patriotism is more Australian than British. The Lintons' world, threatened from outside, withstood challenge, unchanged and untarnished. Australians, and not only children, looking at Billabong, could see themselves as they wanted to be — mates in fortune and adversity, sturdy, decent and fearless inheritors of a tough, but rewarding land. After her husband died in 1948, Mary Grant Bruce returned to England, visiting Australia from time to time. Survived by her son, she died in Sussex on 2 July 1958, and was cremated at Hastings.12

Village Bell*May 1981 There were at least two dog breeders in the village; Stephens had kennels on the Upper Beaconsfield Road, and L. A. Wilson had about forty greyhounds.17
Village BellSep 1981 Even in the recent long, cold, wet, windy winter, we have not had snow. But back in the days of horse transport, when show fell it was a real problem for horses. When L. A. Wilson had to go up to Emerald from Dewhurst after a fall of snow, he had to stop frequently to clear snow from the horses' hooves, to enable the animals to get a grip on the steep hilly tracks. For the same reason, those Christmas card pictures of coaches speeding merrily through the snow are mostly imagination.18
