Anecdote*1901The horsemen now turned their attention back to the main column which, under their protective and vigilant eye, moved through the defile. No sooner had the wagons and their escort passed safely through, than De la Rey and the bulk of his force appeared. The Boers formed up, seemingly in preparation for an attack on the rear, but the General, after surveying the scene apparently changed his mind.
Almost immediately the burghers quietly dispersed. Not another shot was fired.
The Victorians' action on this Saturday, the 16th day of February, was recognised for its courage and initiative by Lord Methuen. Widely known as a man seldom given to praise, he was sufficiently impressed to appoint one of the youngest and most active of the Victorian Officers as his personal aide-de-camp. The honour fell to Lieutenant Charles Mason who had been slightly wounded at Philipstown four days earlier. The son of the Speaker of the Victorian Legislative Assembly, as a member of his Lordship's staff, soon achieved his Captaincy.5

  • 12 Jan 1897: In connection with the recent University examinations, held in Melbourne, we are glad to see the name of Charles Conway Mason, son of Mr F. C. Mason, appearing as a successful candidate. This young gentleman is well known to Southern residents, having spent a good part of his leisure time in accompanying his father round his district. Master Charles has received his education at the South Melbourne Colbourne College, and is regarded as one of the most promising students in the college, which is ably conducted by Sir J. B. O'Hara, M.A.7
  • 1 Feb 1900: THE Hon. F. C. Mason, Mrs. Mason and family are still rusticating at Upper Beaconsfield. Their son, Charlie, about whom they have been so anxious, is now steadily improving in health. Mrs. Mason and her family and their visitor have quite roused the quiet little township. Not content with giving one concert, they are now organising another, which is to be in aid of the Empire Patriotic Fund, on the 10th February. Mr Watt and Mr. Pennyfatber have been guests at " Dundrennan," and on Sunday Mr. aud Mrs. Mason and their guests drove to "Louisville," and were entertained by Dr. and Mrs. L. L. Smith.     The wedding of Captain Charles Conway Mason, elder son of Mr. Francis Conway Mason, ex-Speaker of the Legislative Assembly, and Miss Mabel Louise Krone, younger daughter of Mr. Henry Alfred Krone, of Echuca, was celebrated on 22nd December at "Overbrook," Lansell-road, Toorak, the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Hassell, by the Rev. Dr. Marshall. The house was very artistically decorated with flowers by the girl friends of the bride. The bride, who was given away by her father, wore a well cut white embroidered grass lawn, her white tagel hat clustered with lace and pale pink roses. A white prayer-book was carried. The bridesmaids were Miss Ada Krone, in a crepe de chene gown and tagel hat set with ospreys and Miss Shirley Hassell, who wore a golden coloured charmeuse, with lace collar and cuffs. Her hat was in the same tones. Mr. Frank Laver was best man. Wedding tea was served in the house and grounds, where Di Gilio's band played a special musical programme. The honeymoon was spent in Tasmania. Mr. Justice and Mrs. Hodges sent their car to take the bride and bridegroom to the boat. The travelling dress was a mols coat and skirt, relieved with peacock blue hat to match, draped with a long veil.9
  • 1 May 1945: OBITUARY MRS C. C. MASON
    Mrs Charles Conway Mason, wife of Lieut-Colonel C. C. Mason, who died on Anzac Day at her home, 20 Orrong road. Elsternwick, was well known to numbers of Diggers and other soldiers during the Great War. From the end of 1915 in England she became identified with canteen work at Saltfleet, on the east coast, and later with the Church Army Social Centre for troops in London. She was also a member of the entertainments committee of the Australian Red Cross in London, and towards the end of the war represented that organisation in Rome and Nice. During the present war she worked for the Comforts Fund. Following a short service at her home on Friday, conducted by Archdeacon Hewett, cremation was carried out at the Springvale Crematorium.10
  • 7 Apr 1949: HIGH COURT OFFICIAL'S DEATH FALL
    SYDNEY, Wed: Charles Conway Mason, 72, associate to the Chief Justice of the High Court, crashed 250 feet to the rocks at The Gap, Watson's Bay, at 10.30 am today.
    Police found a diary in Mason's pocket, with his name and a Melbourne address inside. The diary contained notes of High Court sittings, and several newspaper clippings, including one which police think he had published in a Melbourne newspaper as a tribute to his dead wife. Police think Mason's wife died some years ago.11
  • 6 Aug 1949: High Court official left £1,352
    Mr Charles Conway Mason, late associate to the Chief Justice of the High Court of Australia, who died on April 6, left personal estate valued at £1,352 (gross).
    He left his military medals, decorations, and personal papers to Mr F. G. Menzies, Crown Solicitor of Victoria, and the residue of the estate to the Melbourne Legacy and Carry On clubs.12

  • 23 May 1911: Divorce Court. FRIDAY, MAY 19. THE COOK'S JEWELLRY.
    Mary Alicia Thual, aged 37 years, of Acland-street, St. Kilda, launderess, petitioned for a dissolution of her marriage with Edward Thual, aged 48 years, a cook by occupation. Mr. Woolf (instructed by Mr. J. B. McConkey) appeared for the wife. The ground of the petition was desertion. There are two children of the marriage, which took place on December 26, 1898. The husband, at the time of the marriage, was a cook at a college in Melbourne. Soon after the wedding they left for Sydney, and went thence to Charters Towers (where the wife for two years worked as a laundress). From 1903 to 1906 they lived in Brisbane. Then her husband unexpectedly announced his intention of going to Sydney. The wife, in packing his boxes, found a quantity of jewellery. She asked him where he had got it, and he had said that he had bought it. She did not believe him, but she packed the jewellery. When he got to Sydney he wrote to say that he had stolen the jewellery, and did not intend to return. Soon after she got a letter from her husband, inviting her to Melbourne. In March, 1906, she arrived here, and the next day her husband was arrested, hence sent back to Brisbane, where he was sentenced to six months' imprisonment. In March, 1907, he wrote a letter, giving some account of his life in gaol, and in the next letter he said that he was going for a trip, and that he hoped the Queensland Government would not bring him back again. She heard from him only once after that, and that was indirectly. Letters which she had written to him had been returned through the Dead Letter office. A decree nisi, with costs, was granted.   • 10 May 1917: LICENSING REDUCTION BOARD. Wednesday, May 2. Before Messrs Robert Barr (chairman), Thomas F Cumming and James Lock.
    CARDINIA PARK HOTEL. Inspector O'Brien appeared for the Board; owner, Mary Dinely ; Selina Lanigan Oscar licensee. Mr Brayshay for the licensee.
    John Payne, retired draper, deposed that he knew the district and at one time owned the freehold of the hotel and 500 acres; sold the hotel with two acres of land about two years ago, and since then another 22 acres; there had been wonderful improvements in the district, and there was considerable increase in business; had sold about 300 acres in small blocks, up to £40 per acre; the hotel was well conducted and the meals were excellent.
    Alfred Hutchinson, manager surgical department, Bourke street, deposed that he visited the hotel every week end; it was a large week end resort, and from 14 to 16 people were accommodated at week ends; 3 years ago he stayed at the Pine Grove, but he preferred the Cardinia Park Hotel ; the hotel was in front of the Cardinia Park; there was good shooting and fishing.
    Robert Shaw, cabdriver, deposed that he traded between Beaconsfield and Upper Beaconsfield, and he drove the mail coach which passed the door ; he had been driving the coach for ten years and frequently took passengers to the Cardinia Hotel—sometimes a dozen at week ends and during the summer; the trade of the hotel was increasing, as the Cardinia Park was opposite, and at Christmas he drove a number of people to the Park, where they were camped for a week or more.
    Selina Langan Oscar, licensee of the Cardinia Park Hotel, deposed that she purchased the ingoing for £150, and the lease expired in 1918; there were 28 acres with the hotel, and she paid £2 per week rent; gas was laid on with hot and cold water ; since Xmas the income had increased 100 per cent; there had been considerable increase in bar trade; the whole house had been renovated at a cost of £1500; from six to 10 people stayed for week ends, and from 50 to 60 meals a week were served ; a bore had been put down for water, and there was a trough in front of the hotel ; campers in the public park patronised the hotel ; there was fishing in the Cardinia creek; there was a telephone service to the hotel; had no previons experience in hotel-keeping.
