  • 4 Jan 1936: OGILVIE-TULLOCH. The Presbyterian Church, Wattletree road, Malvern, was the scene of a very pletty wedding on the Saturday prior to Christmas, when Miss Jamesina Dorothy Cecelia Tulloch, only daughter of the late Mr. James Tulloch and Mrs. H. Stubbs, of Warburton East, became the wife of Mr. Ian Neil Ogilvie, of Malvern.
Blue and pink flowers—hydrangea and carnations—formed the principal decorations of the church, and the ceremony was performed by the Rev. R. J. Howie.
The bride, who was given away by her step-father, wore a graceful gown of magnolia satin and lace, with lace yoke; the lace continuing down the sleeves to end in a point at the wrist. Lace godets in the side of the skirt fell to form a wide edging around the long satin train. She carried a bouquet of cream and pink-tinted water lilies. The bridesmaids were Misses Mavis Ogilvie (sister of the groom), and Maisie and Alma Hopkins (cousins of the bride), dressed in Jubilee blue crepe Lausanne with slilver lame sashes, and silver flowers at the neck. Their hats were of a matching shade of blue and silver, and they carried bouquets of blue delphiniums and pink gladioli. A dainty trainbearer in cream georgette completed the bridal escort. This was Loris Spottiswoode. She also wore a hair wreath of delphiniums and roses, and carried a silver horseshoe embellished with similar flowers.
The bride's mother chose a stylish frock of nut brown lace with straw hat to tone, and carried a bouquet of autumn tinted dahlias. The best man was Mr. Robert Fleming, and the groomsmen Messrs. Morton Adams and Ernest Hall.
After the ceremony a reception was held at "Northbrook," where pink and blue was the decorative scheme, and the bridal table bore a lovely wedding cake decorated in quite unusual manner. The lower tier portrayed a typical country scene and the upper tier a bush scene, on which —symbolical of the calling of both bride and groom—was a small model of a rural school. When leaving for the honeymoon (spent in Adelaide), the bride travelled in a smart Jubilee blue frock with matching hat, navy blue coat and accessories. The young couple were recipients of many useful and beautiful presents. In addition to several cheques. Ian Neil Ogilvie4

Note*5 Apr 1909 T B Holmes School - Explosion
With the help of the Hull Archives and newspapers in the Local Studies Library I have found out about an explosion in which my mother´s sister was injured. As several children were hurt I thought the details might help someone else with their family history.
It was at the T B Holmes School in Staniforth Place, Hull. It occurred at 9.40 in the morning of Monday April 5th 1909. Two classes were united for a scripture lesson, so there were 70 to 80 children, aged from 3 to 7, in the room. A pipe carrying hot water fractured, (part of the high pressure heating system), the room completely filled with steam and several children and their teacher were severely scalded.
The injured children were Harry Parrott (3) who died the next day, Frederick Sellerfield (3), John Walker (4), Alfred Barton (4), Joseph Thurston (4), Robert Madlam (3), Walter Postill (4). The teacher was Miss Thrustle.
The Board of Trade Inquiry held on August 4th, 5th 1909 found no one could be held responsible for the explosion.
Unfortunately the Hull Archives haven't the attendance records for this school.
Annie didn't have a mark on her body, but was brain damaged from then on.2

  • 17 May 1909: HOT-WATER DELUGE IN SCHOOL. PASSERS-BY RUSH IN TO AID THE CHILDREN. REMARKABLE ESCAPES.
An alarming occurrence took place on April 6 at the Staniforth-place Council School at Hull, England, a hot- water pipe exploding in a classroom, in which some 60 very young children were seated.
There was a terrific report, and streams of hot water rose almost to the ceiling, filling the room with steam. The teacher, who was near the pipe, was knocked down, und when the head teacher ran in she was lying on the floor endeavoring to open the classroom door to let the children out.
Fortunately, there was no panic. Passers-by, rushing into the school, handed the frightened infants out into the playground, where first aid was rendered, some oil and wool luckily being on the promises.
In less than two minutes all the children were removed to a place of safety. Not the slightest confusion prevailed. The little ones were or dered by the head mistress to stand and turn their faces to the opposite wall, and the teachers and others, forming a bodyguard, took them one by one and lifted them into the main classroom.
The scholars in the other classes became uneasy, and subsequently the whole school was dismissed.
Mothers and sisters of the little ones, attracted by the report of the explosion, clamored round the school doors, but soon learned that there was no ground for the exaggerated stories which had gained currency.
The pluck of a man of color named James Eli, a seaman, is worthy of recognition. As soon as he heard the report of the explosion he rushed into the classroom, which was full of steam, and carried several of the children out.
When he appeared Miss Thrustle, the teacher who was scalded, observed, "Never mind me. Save the children." She collapsed when she entered the main classroom, but soon recovered. She was much scalded on her right side.
Nearly all the children had received sprays of the water, and seven were taken to the infirmary, four being so seriously scalded as to necessitate their detention. The little victims, 3 and 4 years of age, were very patient, though suffering considerable pain. One is in a critical condition.
The classroom was flooded before the water could be turned off. It is stated that the fractured pipe was to have been examined next week.6
