It was with much sadness that we learned that "Nixon" passed away on October 26. One of the truly great legends of the Upper Beaconsfield Cricket Club, this left arm wrist spinner used to bamboozle many a batsman during the 1930's. He was a real gentleman too and was honoured for his work at the Shrine of Remembrance.6

    ALTHOUGH she has many friends, including girls who served with her in the AANS, Helen Wilson had a very quiet wedding when she was married on Friday last to Nixon Holmes at St Andrew's, Brighton, Archdeacon H. B. Hewett officiating.
    Helen is the daughter of Dr Norman Wilson, of the Duntroon, which was opportunely in port that day, so he was able to give his daughter away; and following the quiet ceremony buffet luncheon was served at 23 Cummins rd, Moorabbin, where Helen and Nixon will live in the future. Helen was with 2/7th AGH in the Middle East and New Guinea, and Nixon, who was also in the AIF, also saw service in these areas. Neither bride nor bridegroom had any attendants at the wedding, but Nixon's mother, Mrs H. Holmes, and other members of his family came down from Upper Beaconsfield, and Helen's two sisters, Mrs Roy Spiers, (accompanied by her husband) and Mrs D. Reid, came from their homes at Nareen and Coleraine, and Mr Y. Wilson (her brother) and his wife made the journey from Red Hill. Helen dispensed with bridal attire, wore soft blue crepe with a matching halo hat trimmed with a touch of cherry red. Helen Wilson8

    Helen is the daughter of Dr Norman Wilson, of the Duntroon, which was opportunely in port that day, so he was able to give his daughter away; and following the quiet ceremony buffet luncheon was served at 23 Cummins rd, Moorabbin, where Helen and Nixon will live in the future. Helen was with 2/7th AGH in the Middle East and New Guinea, and Nixon, who was also in the AIF, also saw service in these areas. Neither bride nor bridegroom had any attendants at the wedding, but Nixon's mother, Mrs H. Holmes, and other members of his family came down from Upper Beaconsfield, and Helen's two sisters, Mrs Roy Spiers, (accompanied by her husband) and Mrs D. Reid, came from their homes at Nareen and Coleraine, and Mr Y. Wilson (her brother) and his wife made the journey from Red Hill.   • 20 Nov 1915: OBITUARY. MR. E. W. CROWTHER.
    The many friends ot Mr E. W. Crowther heard with regret the announcement of his death on Monday last. Deceased for many years carried on the old established painting and decorating business (now Pendry and Smith) in Bridge road. Some three years ago he retired from business, and with Mrs Crowther took a trip to the Old Country. Although the sea voyage and renewal of old associations with the scenes of his early boyhood in the old land was a pleasing change to the routine of business life, the trip did not have such a beneficial effect as anticipated, and on his return he was obliged, owing to indifferent health, to take things easy, and
    went to reside at Salisbury House, Beaconsfield, where the pleasant surroundings had a bracing effect on a weakened constitution.
    His illness was not of long duration, and the end came rather unexpected. Deceased was of a kindly, genial nature, respected by all who came within the circle of his acquaintance, and in his quiet unobtrusive way performed many little acts of kindness unknown to few outside. He was an esteemed member of the Masonic fraternity (Richmond Lodge) and also of the M.U.I.O.O.F. (Loyal Industry Lodge). The remains were interred in Melbourne Cemetery on Thursday with full Masonic honors the solemn rites of the Order being impressively carried out by the Worshipful Master and officers of the Richmond Lodge, comprising :—W.M., Bro. A. W. Loveridge; I.P.M., Bro. A. W. Allen ; J. W., Bro. J. J. Papworth; Secretary, Bro. C. C. Grant ; Chaplain, Bro. Rev. A. Allnutt ; D.C., Bro. C. A. Blake.
    The mortuary arrangements were carried out by H. King and Sons.12

  • 28 Feb 1917: The half-yearly meeting of the Red Cross and War Relief Society at Beaconsfield Upper was held in the Assembly Hall last Thursday. The President (Mrs Marsh) occupied the chair and there was a good attendance. Mrs Harvey-Smith, the secretary, furnished a report of the work done during the year, which was most satisfactory. The Society has been in existence about 18 months, and during that period have prepared and sent away about 2000 articles, of various descriptions. Every month a box is sent to the Lady Mayoress's Patriotic League for the boys in the trenches. Two boxes were sent last month. In addition to the goods sent to Melbourne, the branch has made a gift of some article for every recruit who has left the district, The treasurer (Mrs Harvey-Smith) reported that after meeting all expenses the branch had a substantial credit balance at their banker's on which to commence their next half year. A vote of thanks was passed to Mrs Crowther who generously provided afternoon tea at all meetings. For this the branch charges each member 3d, and by this means they have raised the substantial sum of £14. A vote of thanks was also passed to Mrs Shorthouse for her free carriage of parcels and goods to and from the railway station.   • 27 May 1929: Mrs. Clorinda Ann Crowther, widow of Mr. E. W. Crowther, who was well known in business circles in Richmond for 30 years, died in Mount St. Evins private hospital early on Saturday morning. She was the eldest of a family which included Mr. H. J. Corder, of Prahran, and the Misses J. and M. Corder, of Salisbury House, Upper Beaconsfield. Mrs. Crowther was born at Falmouth, Cornwall, but had lived in Victoria for 72 years. The funeral took place at the Melbourne General Cemetery on Saturday afternoon.24

  • 1 Sep 1938: MR. H. B. DENNISTON. Mr Henry Britain Denniston, managing director of Denniston and Co Pty Ltd wholesale clothing manufacturers of Flinders lane Melbourne died yesterday at a private hospital aged 64 years.
    Mr Denniston was born on the s s Great Britain off the Cape of Good Hope on the way to Australia. Educated at Bains High School Ballarat, he entered the service of the Bank of New South Wales and in 1896 with his brother Mr C E Denniston founded the firm of Denniston and Co Pty Ltd.
    For many years Mr Denniston was chairman of the Egypt General Mission and president of the Victorian Open-air Tent Mission and the Evangelisation Society of Victoria.
    He is survived by a widow, four daughters and four sons. The funeral will leave his home Marshall avenue Kew this afternoon for the Springvale Crematorium. Arrangements are by Le Pine and Son Pty Ltd.12

    In a large attendance yesterday at the funeral of Mr Henry Britain Denniston managing director of Denniston and Co Pty Ltd of Flinders lane, there were many representatives of Church circles and of commercial and manufacturing interests. The service at Mr Denniston's home in Marshall avenue Kew was conducted by the Rev J E Newnham of the Kew Baptist Church assisted by Colonel F. H Saunders chief secretary of tile Salvation Army and by Evangelist M C Lumsden of the Melbourne Bible Institute.
    The funeral left for the Springvale Crematorium. Many wreaths and other flowers were carried. Mr Newnham conducted the service at the Crematorium chapel. The chief mourners were Mr. J. A. Denniston, Mr. C. H. Denniston and Mr. S. Denniston (sons) and Mr. C. E. Denniston (brother). The pall-bearers were Dr. Carl Wood and Messrs. R. W. Neville, Alex Eggleston, J. Renshaw, R. G. Holding and Edgar Millar.
    Arrangements were by Le Pine and Son Pty. Ltd.13

  • 9 Jan 1915: WAITER ARRESTED. Theft of cashbox alleged
    Complaint having been made to the Police Department that some money belonging to Jane and Mary Corder had been stolen from their house in Upper Beaconsfield, Detective W. P. Britt took up the inquiry, and he arrested Sidney Adams on a charge of having on December 31 stolen a cash-box containing £18, and a cheque for £2/2/, the property of Jane and Mary Corder. Adams appeared at the City Court this morning to answer the charge, and was remanded for a week.
    Detective Britt said that Adams had been employed as a waiter at the Corders' house. The cash box was stolen on December 31, and on January 7 Adams left. Adams had made a statement in which he said that he had taken the money and cheque from the cash-box, and had thrown the cash-box away. Jane Corder43
  • 20 Jan 1915: BERWICK POLICE COURT. At the local police court this morning, before Messrs W. J. Harvey Smith (chairman), G. L. Wilson, T. McLennann and Sir Edward Carlisle, Js P., a young man named Sidney Adams was charged with stealing a cash box containing the sum of £18, the property of the Misses Corder, of "Salisbury House," Beaconsfield Upper. Inspector Costello prosecuted, the accused being undefended. Inspector Costello outlined the facts of which he intended to give evidence, Jane Corder stated that she was one of the proprietresses of "Salisbury House," Beaconsfield Upper. She knew the accused. He came to their place on the 24th of December and was employed as houseman and waiter. On the 30th December at 10 p.m. she put the cashbox produced in a cupboard in their private sitting room. After locking the cupboard she put the key in a desk. The cashbox contained about £18, including a cheque for £2 2s. She missed the cashbox on the morning of the 31st. No person but herself or her sister had a right to remove the cashbox. Her brother-in-law reported the matter to the police. Accused left on the 7th instant. Walter Aitken stated that he found the cashbox produced in a private lane close to his house, on the 1st instant. This lane is about three or four chains from "Salisbury House." He handed the box to Constable Hehir. Constable Hehir stated that the robbery was reported to him on the 31st December. He made certain enquiries in connection with it. The cashbox was handed to him on the 1st January. It contained nothing when he got it. It was not locked. It was later on identified by the witness Jane Corder. Detective Brett stated - At about 2 o'clock on Friday, the 8th of this month I saw accused in Little Bourke Street. I said to him. "Your name is Sidney Adams." He replied, "Yes." I said " My name is Brett; I am a detective." Accused was carrying a small parcel. I asked him what he had in the parcel and he said he did not know. I said "Let me see it," and took the parcel from him. I told him there had been a robbery at Upper Beaconsfield and I asked him to come to the Detective Office while I made some enquiries. At the office I opened the parcel in his presence and in the presence of Constable Hehir. It contained 10 sovereigns, a half sovereign, three £1 notes and a cheque for £2 2s. I told accused that this was the proceeds of a robbery at Upper Beaconsfield, and he said "Yes; I took it. I will tell you all about it." He then made the statement produced and it was reduced to writing. He said he had thrown the cashbox in the scrub. This was the case for the prosecution. In answer to the query as to whether he wished the court to deal with the case or that it should go before a jury, accused asked that the court should deal with it. He pleaded guilty to the charge and asked for leniency. He said he had had to make his own way through the world since he was 14 years of age - he was now 24 - and it was the first time he had been in trouble. He had good credentials from several employers. The Bench sentenced him to 4 months imprisonment with hard labor. An order was made for return to the Misses Corder of the money recovered.   • 23 Apr 1928: BEACONSFIELD UPPER. A large gathering of residents of the district met on Saturday night to bid farewell to Mr J M Reed and Mrs Reed, who are leaving the district to live with their son, Dr. Stanley Reed, at Korumburra. Mr. Reed has lived in this dis trict for nearly 10 years, making his home here on retiring from the Victorian public service. Though retired from active work in the service, he has continued his interest in many matters connected with tourist activities in the State, and his knowledge and experience have been of considerable benefit to the district. The farewell took the form of a social: Mr. Reed was presented with a fine writing desk. Mrs. Reed was entertained by the Misses Corder at a croquet afternoon, and was presented with a bag from the members of the croquet club, of which she had been the president.     Complaint having been made to the Police Department that some money belonging to Jane and Mary Corder had been stolen from their house in Upper Beaconsfield, Detective W. P. Britt took up the inquiry, and he arrested Sidney Adams on a charge of having on December 31 stolen a cash-box containing £18, and a cheque for £2/2/, the property of Jane and Mary Corder. Adams appeared at the City Court this morning to answer the charge, and was remanded for a week.
    Detective Britt said that Adams had been employed as a waiter at the Corders' house. The cash box was stolen on December 31, and on January 7 Adams left.   • 16 Sep 1942: MISS JANE CORDER
    A NATIVE of Cornwall (England), but a resident of Upper Beaconsfield for the past 40 years, Miss Jane Corder, who passed away on September 10th after several months of illness, is deeply mourned throughout the whole district. She and her sister owned and conducted “Sailsbury House,” from 1902 to 1920 and after disposing of the property in the latter year, moved to the corner known as “Sherwood," and have lived there ever since. The Misses Corder were held in high respect in the district and were just as highly regarded by many friends in the city.
    The funeral took place on Saturday morning, a service being held in the Christ Church of England, Berwick, conducted by the vicar, Rev. E. Panelli. After the service, the cortege moved off to the Berwick cemetery where the remains were laid to rest in the Church of England portion, the Rev. Panelli again officiating. Many floral tributes covered the coffin.
    Deceased’s only surviving sister, Mary, has the sympathy of her many friends in her sad parting.
    W. J. Garnar and Son carried out the funeral arrangements.41
