  • 28 Feb 1903: After an illness extending over eighteen months, Mrs Eliza Lily Smith died at her residence, Swamp-road on Tuesday last. The deceased was the wife of Mr Samuel Smith, varnish manufacturer, fourth daughter of Mrs Osborne and the late Mr John Delahunty and sister of M. Miller, K. Dewsnap, M. Delahunty, W. Delahunty and P. Delahunty, and was only 31 years of age. The cause of death was hemorrhage of the lungs, and the deceased was buried at the Footscray Cemetery on Thursday afternoon, a number of friends and relatives paying their last respects.
    The Rev P. Boyle read the burial service, and Mr J. W. Cameron, (H. King) conducted the mortuary arrangements.5

  • 7 Sep 1864: Supposed Infanticide. — Some extraordinary rumors have been floating about Chiltern for the past two days, respecting the death, on Tuesday night, of a girl named Brown — the daughter of an engineer residing there. The girl, who was aged about fifteen years, resided with her parents. It was at first said that she had been poisoned, but it eventually appeared that she died from exhaustion consequent upon the concealment of birth of a child.
    The deceased, in the concealment, appears to have been aided by a younger sister, who, according to her own account, took the child at her sister's request and threw it down an old shaft in Guy Fawkes' Gully. The police who descended the shaft when search was being made, found nothing there but a dog, which snapped at them furiously. There was no sign of the child, and it was left to conjecture whether it had been devoured by a ravenous dog or had never been put down the hole as stated by the child. Dr. Dempster, of Beechworth, yesterday made a post mortem examination of the deceased, the particulars of which have not yet transpired. An inquest was afterwards held. The coroner said that in consequence of it being impossible to find the body of the child, the inquiry would be adjourned until Monday, at ten o'clock.
    Immediately afterwards, at the police court, the mother and daughter were charged with aiding and abetting the concealment of a birth. The magistrate said at present he would not take any evidence, but would hold them over to bail until Monday. The bail allowed was in the sum of £100.   • 8 Sep 1864: INQUEST AT CHILTERN.
    The adjourned inquest on the body of Christina Brown was held at the Court House, Chiltern, on Monday last, before W. H. Gaunt, Esq., Coroner Superintendent. Winch watched the case for the Police.
    The jury having been sworn, Dr Dempster was called, who deposed to having made a post mortem examination of the deceased. He described minutely the state in which he found the various organs of the body to be, and gave it as his opinion that deceased must have been in an advanced state of pregnancy, and had evidently been delivered of a child. Death, he considered, was caused by inflammation ensuing thereon, leading to mortification; and exhaustion from hemorrhage.
    To the Coronor: There was no appearance of means having been used to procure abortion.
    To Mr Winch: Deceased must have been a considerable time in labor ; it would be an extraordinary circumstance that she could be confined without persons in the house hearing her.
    Dr Hutchinson deposed: Was called in to see deceased on the evening of August 29th. She was in a very weak state. Suspected she had been confined, and spoke to her mother about it. Her mother distinctly said she had not been. On the following day again saw deceased. Deceased and her mother both said she felt better. Examined deceased, and satisfied myself as to her having been confined. The mother again denied the fact. I then gave up the case.
    To Mr Winch: Deceased must have been at least seven months gone.
    Dr McMullin, sworn, deposed: Saw the deceased on the 30th August. Examined her, and removed the placenta. Questioned deceased, who owned to having been confined. The sister of deceased said she had taken a little child, and thrown it into a hole.
    To Mr Winch : The sister told me she had assisted at the confinement, and the mother expressed surprise when I told her what I had removed.
    Hannah Sophia Brown deposed : Deceased was my daughter. On the 27th August, deceased told me she was unwell. Cautioned her to be careful of taking cold. Deceased complained of rheumatism in the hip. Was astonished when Dr Hutchinson said deceased had been confined. Deceased went out on that evening, and complained of a pain in her stomach on her return. Noticed nothing unusual about her appearance.
    To the Coroner : The partitions were composed of calico. Had deceased called out, must have heard her. Did not notice any particular indications beyond those customary at certain periods.
    Hannah Brown: Am sister to deceased. At her request, took away a bundle, and threw it down a hole. My sister subsequently told me it was a baby. Do not know what became of the blanket. This witness prevaricated so far as to cause the Coroner to remark that her evidence could not be believed.
    The Coroner having summed up the evidence, the jury retired, and at the expiration of two hours, returned the following verdict — 'That deceased died from inflammation, and mortification of the passages of the womb, and considerable loss of bloods.16'
  • 17 Sep 1864: Hannah Brown, the younger sister of the girl Christina Brown, who died a few days since at Chiltern in childbed, under rather remarkable circumstances, has been committed for trial for aiding and abetting the concealment of the birth of the child. The mother, who had been associated with the prisoner in the charge, was released and placed in the witness box. The duly evidence she gave was that her daughter Hannah was over thirteen years of age.17

Eric Cecil Browne was an electrical engineer, aged 25, when he enlisted on 14 Oct 1915, SERN 5275. His address at the time was Walker Avenue, Paddington, Sydney. His father's address at this time was Glenmore Crescent, Black Rock. His unit embarked from Melbourne on 5 Jan 1916 on board HMAT A19 Afric. He was a sapper with Signal Troop 3, 13th Reinforcement. During his war service he was promoted to Lieutenant with the 1st Signal Squadron. He returned to Australia on 3 Jul 1919.
The Browne family lived in Upper Beaconsfield until c1909.1

Archibald Chase Browne was an electrical engineer, aged 23, when he enlisted on 19 Jul 1915. SERN 13154. He was living with his parents in Black Rock at that time. He had previously been with the 66th Infantry, but as his unit embarked on RMS Malwa, on 21 Mar 1916 from Melbourne he was with the Field Artillery Brigade 4, 4th Reinforcement. He returned to Australia on 29 May 1919.

Village Bell*Jul 1978 The death in a road accident of Mr. Arthur Billing occurred at Mathoura, New South Wales, on June 10th.
Mr. Billing came from England associated with the Shell Oil Company and was a foundation member of the B.U. Association and closely connected with many local activities.
During the Second World War he served with the R.A.A.F. in South East Asia. After the cessation of hostilities he took up residence in Beaconsfield Upper and was for some time engaged in business in Dandenong.
Subsequently he acquired "Fassifern", in a'Beckett Road and then for some eighteen years was poultry farming.
Early this year he retired to live in Mathoura where, not long after, he met his untimely and tragic death. Our sympathies to his wife and daughter.12

  • 6 Apr 1956: Seven hurt in crash; engine flies 60 feet
    SEVEN people were injured-three, seriously—when two cars collided head-on on Princes Highway, at Spring Vale, at 8 a.m. yesterday.
    The force of the collision threw two men out of the smaller car on to grass on each side of the road. Parts of the smaller car were thrown over a wide area. The engine tore through the side of the car and landed 60ft away. The bigger car, a late model sedan, spun off the road into a tree, and the steering wheel was pushed against the driver.
    The injured were taken to Alfred Hospital.
    They were:
    SERIOUS: Hans Gringel, driver of the small car, of Irymple st., St. Kilda, fractured leg and head injuries; Don Wright, 35, of Lalbert cres., Prahran, fractured left arm and internal injuries; John Fleetham, 38, Old Gembrook rd. Upper Beaconsfield, lacerations and fractured skull.
    The following were treated for lacerations and shock and allowed to leave: Arthur Billing, 44, Sugar Loaf rd., Upper Beaconsfield, driver of the big car; John Remington, 42, Wessells rd., Berwick; Alan Halliburton, 15, High st., Malvern; Brian Hogan Taylor, 46, Hark-a-Way, Berwick.
