R.S.L. colleagues, his friends and neighbours, were stunned this month to learn of the death of Fred Taylor, a respected St Georges Road resident.
An active young-at-heart widower, Fred's manner belied his early 70's age. He played a leading role in the affairs of the Bentleigh sub-branch before moving to this Village; then at the Halford Road clubrooms he was continually among the forerunners of working bees and special efforts.10

Berwick community worker Helen Hudson was awarded a gilt rosette for 60 years of service to Red Cross. Mrs Hudson had served the entire 60 years with the Berwick Upper Beaconsfield unit. Other members to receive long service awards at the annual meeting were Glad Mitchell and Nancie Gower - both recognized for 30 years of service. The unit was formed in 1914 by seven ladies, including Elizabeth Thomas, the wife of Gazette founder Albert Edward Thomas. Re-elected president Barbara Jackson said in her annual report that it was increasingly difficult for volunteer groups to attract new members. She said it was of great concern to volunteer organisations that with the new millennium had come a new age of litigation. The executive remained unchanged, with Mrs Jackson at the helm, Jenny Coventry and Helen Fyfe deputy chairs, Gyneth Troy treasurer and Mary Kelly secretary. Helen Lesley Hughes14
