  • 16 Oct 1935: EARLY PIONEERS--Murchison-Mackenzie
IN the early days of our history — and of the 19th century — in order to help populate and make this outpost in the Southern Hemisphere better known in the world, the Home Government offered free grants of land to army officers willing to migrate with their families. Among the first to take advantage of this was John Murchison, of the 96th Regiment, who landed at Sydney in 1833. With him were Admiral Gore and Captain Baker, old friends. Gore's son later left with the ill-fated Arctic expedition under Sir John Franklin, and was never heard from again. Murchison's first friend in New South Wales was Captain King, and others to whom he brought letters of introduction were Macarthur, Campbell (of Campbell's Wharf), and Terence Aubrey Murray.
PROCEEDING to Parramatta, Murchison rented a cottage near the first Government House. He left his family there and went to the Goulburn district. He took up land about five miles from where Goulburn now stands, prepared a home, and settled down to farming, calling his place Taradale. Beautiful cedar was plentiful in those days, and later he built a fine residence. In 1837 Farquhar Mackenzie arrived in Sydney, and travelled with another man looking for suitable country in which to settle, and soon afterwards arrived at Taradale. Later Mackenzie entered into partnership with Murchison, and, purchasing sheep from the famous Macarthur flocks, went with men to Monaro. He found the climate too cold after long residence in Java, and decided to go to Victoria (which had lately been proclaimed a separate colony) with a party, amongst whom were Kent Hughes, Peter Snodgrass, Kelberry Campbell, and others. Leaving the rest of the party, he went some five miles farther on and found a creek, which he called King Parrot Creek. He decided to settle there, and called his place Kerrisdale after his Scottish home. There he was joined some years later by Murchison, whose daughter he married. Farquhar Mackenzie was the younger son of Captain Kenneth Mackenzie of Gairloch, Scotland, who had served in India, being present at the siege of Seringapatan under General Sir David Baird.
LATER Mr. Murchison, on going to see the Victorian property, had an exciting experience with bushrangers. He him self drove the first gig tandem over the lonely bush roads, being accompanied on horseback by Captain MacLachlan. On the first day after leaving Taradale, in the dusk of the evening, when approaching Gunning, a gang of bushrangers appeared, intending, no doubt, to intercept the vehicle. Missing that, they fell upon Captain MacLachlan, who was armed with one of the first revolvers brought out — one of the old pepper-box pattern. He charged into the bushrangers, but missed. Mr. Murchison handed the reins to his servant and hastened to his assistance, when the raiders made off, apparently thinking that in the darkness they had come upon a party of police. He afterwards decided to sell his Goulburn property and join Mr. Mackenzie at Kerrisdale, trekking there in a caravan specially built for his wife and family, the servants travelling in bullock-drays.
WHILE Mr. Murchison had been stationed at Halifax, Nova Scotia, he married a daughter of Quartermaster Roberts of the 81st Regiment, a woman who proved to have the true pioneering spirit and who accompanied him through all the trying experiences of those early days— a faithful and energetic helpmate, leaving behind her to carry on the good work about fifty lineal descendants, all living in Australia. At the time of Mr. Murchison's death he was the oldest magistrate in the colonies, having been made a territorial magistrate of New South Wales in 1836. As I have said, Farquhar Mackenzie married one of the daughters. Of their six sons, three have passed away — namely, Hector, Farquhar (at Bloemfontein, South Africa), and Charles Edward. Those surviving are Kenneth (a prominent official in banking circles in this State and Queensland) and John (a station manager) — both retired; while Stuart is an orchardist in the Gosford district. Four daughters are living. —Mary Graham. John Murchison, Martha 'Patty' MacKenzie, Farquhar MacKenzie7

Newspaper-Articles

  • 16 Jul 1925: Cuthbert Fetherstonhaugh, a dear and valued friend of 34 years' standing, has coiled up his ropes and gone to a better place. If ever there lived a British gentleman in every sense of the word, he was one, and all is summed up in that. Wherever he lived, in numerous parts of Australia, he was beloved by everyone, and the world is poorer for his death.
He died when en route for his property Mungerie, near Coonamble, N.S.W., and would have been 88 years old on the 22nd ult. For several years he had made Blackheath his summer home, and paid periodical visits to Mungerie, which was managed by his well known and popular son, Major C. Fetherstonhaugh.
Cuthbert Fetherstonhaugh was born in Co. Westmeath, Ireland, in 1837, and arrived in Melbourne 16 years later. After nine years in Victoria, most of which time he managed Muntham for Mr. Edward Henty, he went to North Queensland. A few years later he accepted the management of Brookong (N.S.W.), owned by Messrs. Hebden and Osborne. The station comprised 315,000 acres of heavily timbered country, and depastured only 46,000 sheep. In 1871 he resigned, and it then carried 96,000 sheep, and was all fenced. He then became a minister of the Church of England, being ordained by the Bishop of Goulburn at Wagga in 1873, and was appointed to the large districts of Urana and Jerilderie. Two years later he resigned from the Church and took charge of Canally Station, near Balranald, of 400,000 acres. A year afterwards he purchased, with some friends, Goorianawa Station, now owned by Campbell and Stirton. In 1894 he interested himself in the meat export trade.
For some years, from 1902, he was engaged in valuing work for the New South Wales Government, valuing over 20 million acres for land taxation purposes, and recently he has owned Mungerie, a fine property near Coonamble, on which he did well. He wrote for this paper for many years, and a few years ago published an autobiography under the title of After Many Days.
He took great interest in kindergarten work, and was one of the founders of the Golden Fleece branch of the kindergarten in Sydney. He leaves a widow, two sons, the elder being Major C. Fetherstonhaugh, late of the Light Horse, the other, Albany, who is, I believe, a resident of Queensland, and one daughter, Mrs. McMillan. His wife was a Miss Florence Murchison, daughter of a very well-known Army man.5

Australian Dictionary of Biography

Cuthbert Fetherstonhaugh (1837-1925), pastoralist, was born on 22 June 1837 in Dardistown, County Westmeath, Ireland, son of Cuthbert Fetherstonhaugh and his wife Susan, née Curtis. In 1843 the family moved to Germany and returned to Ireland in 1848. Cuthbert attended school in Frankfurt and Wales and later Belfast Academy. In 1852 his father, two brothers and a cousin left Ireland for Victoria and in May 1853 Cuthbert followed in the Sussex.
In Melbourne Cuthbert worked first as a wharf clerk for £2 10s. a week but soon joined a brother as a carrying contractor and cleared £5 a week. He next went surveying on the Upper Goulburn River and then trapped horses with Hunter and Peter Snodgrass in the ranges. Persuaded by his mother to take more steady employment, he worked on Edward Henty's Muntham run for six years. With Tom Clibborn Fetherstonhaugh laid out the Coleraine steeplechase and won repute as one of the most dare-devil riders of the Western District.
Fetherstonhaugh left Muntham in 1862 and went to Queensland where with two partners he acquired Ban Ban near Gayndah on the Burnett River. Travelling further north Cuthbert was stricken with dysentery. On recovery, he bought the lease of Burton Downs, 300 miles (482 km) north of Rockhampton, in June 1863 but after a three-year struggle Burton Downs had to be sold. Although penniless and with diminished vitality, he remained adventurous. His reputed encounter with the bushranger Bluecap and his gang was recalled by Barcroft Boake, and he also figured as 'Rev. Herbert Heatherstone' in Rolf Boldrewood's The Colonial Reformer.
Fetherstonhaugh underwent a religious experience in 1865 and in 1872, encouraged by Dean Hussey Macartney, he studied for the Anglican ministry. After acting as lay-reader at Templestowe, Doncaster and Anderson's Creek near Melbourne, he was ordained at Wagga Wagga in July 1873 and then took charge of the Brookong-Jerilderie parish. Two of his sermons were published: Our Father in 1874 and Truth and Freedom in 1876. His stipend of £300 helped him to buy the books he had longed for but his reading led him to question beliefs he had accepted from childhood. Unable to accept major Anglican dogma, he resigned in May 1875 but served at Urana as an unsectarian minister. In 1876 he became manager of Canally station near Balranald and on 16 November in Melbourne he married Flora Agnes Murchison. Next year with partners he bought Goorianawa station in the Castlereagh district and managed it for seventeen years.
In 1886 Fetherstonhaugh helped to form the Commercial and Pastoral Association of New South Wales and in 1890 the Pastoralists' Union. In 1894 he began to advocate inland freezing works and a meat export company. In relevant journals and lectures all over the colony he sought support for his scheme and by August 71,000 shares and £40,100 in debentures had been taken up. In 1895 he visited Chicago to engage experts in canning. In 1898 when the Stockowners' Meat Export Co. was well established he turned to mining in the Gulf Country. Successful, he returned in 1902 to New South Wales, and worked as a government land valuer.
Fetherstonhaugh next bought Mungarie, east of Coonamble. In old age he left its management to his son Cuthbert and lived at Blackheath. His last great interest was the Free Kindergarten Union of New South Wales. In 1918 he published in Sydney his lively autobiography, After Many Days, which he continued as 'My religious experiences' (c.1919), a manuscript now in the Mitchell Library. He died on 10 June 1925 at Wellington, survived by his wife, two sons and one daughter. He left an estate worth £3252.6

  • 16 Jun 1927: Another dear friend of many years' standing in Mr. George Lyon Ryder (1844-1927), late of Quanda Station, Coonamble, N.S.W., passed away on the 22nd of May at his residence in Roseville, Sydney, aged 83 years.
One of Australia's pioneer pastoralists, and a man beloved by all, he was born in Sydney in 1844, being the seventh son of the late Mr. Thomas U. Ryder, one of the pioneers of the Hunter River district, N.S.W., and also of Victoria. On the completion of his education, and when twenty years of age, George Ryder, with his two brothers, Edmund and Thomas, went to Fiji, taking up land and cotton growing with marked success, as well as assisting largely in the development of the island.
About 1882 he returned to Australia, and in conjunction with his brothers purchased Calga Station, in the Coonamble district, N.S.W., a property on which they founded a highclass stud of Merino sheep. Calga was held until 1905, when the partnership was dissolved, but part of the station and part of the stud flock were retained by Mr. G. L. Ryder. The former he called Quanda, but it was sold some seven years ago, when Mr. Ryder retired from active pastoral life, though still retaining a keen interest in country affairs.
He is survived by his widow and two sons, Messrs. E. L. Ryder and R. Ryder, both of whom are interested in grazing in the nor'-west of New South Wales, while the former is also a partner in Messrs. Hain and Searight, Sydney.3
