Village Bell* | Dec 1990 | SUTHERLAND PARK. Sutherland Park came into being just on ten years ago when land was set aside for Municipal Purposes on the Sutherland Estate after it was subdivided in 1980. Ash Wednesday, 1983, put Sutherland Park on hold while everybody was busy rebuilding our town and helping neighbours. In 1986, the Upper Beaconsfield Tennis Club was looking around for a new home and Sutherland Park was suggested. At present, six entout cas courts are situated in the Park, with provision for two more courts in the future. In 1988, a new Committee was formed, along with members of the Tennis Club. Over the past three years "Sutherland Park" has seen the opening of the new club house and tennis courts (which would have to be the best in the district) and the erection of $6,000 worth of playground equipment for the local children.17 |

Obituary | 27 Dec 1991 | DORIS MARY SUTHERLAND * 1 July 1899 - 23 December 1991 The Vicar has asked me to speak about Mary, and it is an honour to do so. I first knew Mary and Don when we came to Upper Beaconsfield in 1962, but I am grateful to Margaret Phillips for telling me something of her life before that. After World War I Don Sutherland, who had served in the British Army, came out to Australia and found employment in Tongala in Victoria. Mary, who was a qualified pharmacist, was very much in love with him and she came out from England to marry him. She became the first pharmacist in Tongala. Margaret, whose parents were farmers in the district, remembers Mary as a very attractive young woman who carried herself beautifully. In her white chemist's gown, with her dark hair dressed back into a bun, she was without doubt a great acquisition to Tongala. Mary and Don became friends of Margaret's parent's, Lou and Lily Bayer, and often, on summer evenings they used to ride out to see their friends and swim in the irrigation channel. After some years the young couple went back to England where Don qualified as an optometrist. When they returned to Australia they both practiced their professions in Benalla. They came to Upper Beaconsfield in 1955 at the suggestion of Margaret's parents, and it was at their property, Gwenelg in the Stoney Creek Road, that I first knew Mary. I have vivid early memories of her surrounded by her English Setters, which she bred, working in her garden, especially in her vegetable garden, or out in the paddock behind the house with her horses, a slight graceful figure in riding breeches. Don had a pilots' licence. I do not know whether Mary flew with him. She very likely did, but I do know that she accompanied him when he drove his car in hill climbing competitions and on long trips to the centre of Australia. After Don died, Mary and her sister Marnie, who, as a widow, had come out to live with the Sutherlands, moved to 9 Wilson Street, Berwick. When Marnie died Mary had lost the two people she loved most in the world, her husband and her sister. She carried on bravely on her own at Wilson Street until 1987 when she had to become a patient in the Highland Park Nursing Home at Upper Beaconsfield, where she was very well cared for in her last years. It would be remise of me not to mention Mary's help after the Ash Wednesday Fires. My wife, Peg, who had been doing Red Cross work at Narre Warren North, was not allowed by the Police to come up to Upper Beaconsfield. After my unsuccessful fight to save Applecross, I went down to Berwick and eventually got a message that Peg was at Mary's house. At about half past twelve in the morning Mary opened her door to a very dirty looking firefighter. For six days until we found somewhere to live that dear frail old lady, who was one of my Legacy widows then aged 85, looked after Peg and me as if we were her own children. Mary was in her 93rd year when she died. She was one of the original members of the Berwick legacy Widows' Club, and, until she became too frail to attend, was a devoted member of the congregation here at St John's and a member of the Ladies' Guild. She served for many years in the Red Cross, for which she was awarded a Long Service Medal. Mary was a gentlewoman in every sense of the word and was loved by all those who were privileged to know her. John Bellair.14 |
Village Bell* | Feb 1992 | Mrs. Mary Sutherland Many members of the Berwick/Upper Beaconsfield [Red Cross] Unit were saddened to read of the death of Mrs. Mary Sutherland. Prior to failing health necessitating nursing home care, she was an enthusiastic worker for the Unit and also a generous donor during her residency in Upper Beaconsfield and later in Berwick.15 |
