Village Bell*Jun 1995 Memorial Service — Edward Tregoning 1913-1995
A Memorial Service to celebrate the life of the late Edward Tregoning was held in St John's Church on 21st May. Rev. Roger Rich officiated.
Edward was born in England in 1913. He was educated at Harrow School and Cambridge University, gaining a degree in engineering. During the War he worked for several years with a bomb disposal unit, retiring with the rank of Major. In 1968 he migrated to Australia with his wife Marjory. Soon after, they built a home in Upper Beaconsfield, and lived there from 1970 until 1983, when they moved to Berwick.
The Memorial Service was organised by the Beaconhills Christian College, and attended by the members of Tregoning House and local friends. Tregoning House was named in his honour in recognition of his several generous gifts which were vital in the establishment of the school.8
Village BellSep 2022 Beaconhills benefactor had a colourful past
Former Upper Beaconsfield resident Major Edward Tregoning played a crucial role in the early history of Beaconhills College.
In fact, his generous donation of $60,000 (around $212,000 in today’s monetary terms), is probably a major reason why the College was able to weather the financial challenges of its early years. His support of Beaconhills led to him being named as one of the College’s house patrons in 1989.
This year, as Beaconhills College celebrates its 40th anniversary, the school has revealed new insights into this reportedly shy and reclusive man, courtesy of his niece Alison Nisselle.
Major Tregoning led a private life in his beloved property ‘Ularring’ in Upper Beaconsfield and was a member of the St John’s congregation for 15 years.
Until now the College possessed only two faded photographs of him, taken around the time of World War Two. Ms Nisselle recently found a third, a passport photo, taken before he moved to Australia in 1968.
She believes Major Tregoning’s strict English public school upbringing may have been one motivation to support what he regarded as a school with a “gentler” approach. But Ms Nisselle said another possible reason was that he and his wife Margery had tried unsuccessfully for years to have children.
“He really missed having children. I used to take my two grandsons up to visit them in Upper Beaconsfield. Uncle Edward just loved them,” Ms Nisselle said.
She remembers a man who also loved adventure and the adrenaline rush of defusing bombs during World War Two. One bomb actually blew up during the London Blitz as he was working on it, leaving him buried under a pile of rubble. His mates visited the scene days later to pay their respects, only to hear a voice calling out from below. They dug him out and, miraculously, he survived.
Ms Nisselle also recalls that her uncle had a mischievous twinkle in his eye and may have even had a few questionable friends. As a former successful screenwriter, Ms Nisselle spent research time with Melbourne’s Major Crime Squad where she was told her ‘naughty’ uncle had a mate called Ronnie Biggs (of the Great Train Robbery fame).
Ms Nisselle said it was her uncle’s choice to name his Upper Beaconsfield house ‘Ularring’.
“He felt a strong emotional connection to Ernest Giles the explorer, who was Aunt Margery’s great uncle, and my great-great uncle,” she said. “He read the book, Australia Twice Traversed, and felt a strong kinship with the story of Giles being saved by an aboriginal guide, who led them to water at a critical moment. The indigenous name for the waterhole was ‘Ularring'.
“It reminded him of the very close shave he had, being blown up during the Blitz.”
Major Tregoning’s house sheltered many local residents during the Ash Wednesday bushfires. As an engineer who had lived through the firestorms of the London Blitz, Major Tregoning had previously consulted the SES on how to best make the house bushfire safe. The property had deep water tanks, steel piping and a sprinkler system. Ms Nisselle proudly displays the old house sign on her wall of her own home.
While Major Tregoning passed away in 1995, Ms Nisselle believes that he would have delighted by Beaconhills College’s 40th anniversary.
“He would have been so chuffed – it would have mattered hugely to him,” she said.9

  • 9 Dec 1893: THE LAW COURTS. BEACONSFIELD HEIGHTS ESTATE COMPANY. Application was made to Mr Justice Holroyd in chambers yesterday on behalf of the Commercial Bank of Australia for final judgment in an action against the "Beaconsfield Heights Estate Company Limited to recover £2,554 and interest upon a promissory note made by the defendant company in favour of L. L. Smith and J. H. Webb and endorsed by them to the bank. The defendant asked leave to defend the action. An affidavit was made by William Brisbane acting secretary of the company to the effect that the note sued upon was one of a number given to Messrs Smith and Webb for land purchased from them that in November, 1892, it was agreed that the contract should be cancelled upon the company forfeiting the payments made and giving up the land and the vendors restoring to the company the promissory notes then current and that the deponent was afterwards told by Mr L. L. Smith's solicitor that the bank had promised to give up the note held by it upon the above arrangement being carried out. The land was given back early this year and the company was now without assets of any kind.
Mr Justice Holroyd held that as the bank received no consideration for the alleged undertaking it was not now estopped from suing on the note. He also overruled an objection that the plaintiff had failed to show that the defendant company was a trading company with power to make negotiable instruments. The Court was entitled to infer from everyday experience that companies formed to buy and sell land were trading companies. It was a trade, and sometimes a very dirty trade, too. As the defendant was not prepared to pay the amount of the claim into court, judgment would be entered for the plaintiff with costs. Mr Vasey appeared for the plaintiff, and Mr Cussen for the defendant. Louis Lawrence Smith, John Holden Webb, William Brisbane80

  • 12 Dec 1895: BEACONSFIELD HEIGHTS ESTATE COMPANY. THE LIST OF CONTRIBUTORS. Mr Justice Williams yesterday delivered a reserved decision on an application made to him on the 21th October last to have the names of certain persons placed on the list of contributones of the Beaconsfield Heights Estate Company, in liquidation. The application was made by Mr Mitchell for the liquidator of the company and it was opposed by Mr H. Barrett, on behalf of A. Asher and E. J. Field, and by Mr Levinson on behalf of W Hider Smith. It appeared that Asher, Field, and Smith were formerly shareholders of the company and their names were still on the share register, and the liquidator therefore desired to have them placed on the list of contributors for calls. The grounds of the opposition to the application were that Messrs L L Smith and J H Webb were the vendors of the property to the company, that Messrs Asher, Field, and W. H. Smith were not able to pay the calls that were made by the company, and that it had formerly been agreed that if they would pay what money they could, their shares should be transferred to the vendors, and they should be freed from the shares. Asher paid £15, Field £18, and Smith £72, and they sent in transfers of their shares in blank to the directors of the company, but the shares were not transferred to Messrs L. L. Smith and J. H. Webb, and their names were left on the register. Two calls were made after they sent in their shares, but they were never asked to pay them, and it was contended that under the circumstances they had
been freed from the shares, and could not be made contributories. Mr Mitchell stated that the liquidator found the names on the share register and therefore had to apply for them to be placed on the list of contributories. No transfers of the shares had been made to Messrs. L. L. Smith and J. H. Webb, and the directors had no power to accept surrender of the shares. Messrs. Asher, Field, and W Hider Smith were therefore liable for the shares. Mr Justice Williams in giving his decision yesterday, said he found that the directors had no power to make the arrangment to release Messrs. Asher, Field, and W Hider Smith from their liability for calls, but he also found that the company had acquiesced in that arrangement. His decision was there fore in favour of Messrs. Asher, Field, and W Hider Smith. He held that they could not be placed on the list of contributories, and the application was dismissed. Louis Lawrence Smith, John Holden Webb, William Brisbane82
