  • 17 Nov 1909: BERWICK. The holiday week-end passed off very quietly. There were not nearly so many visitors to the district, as this time last year, although we were livened up by a detachment of about 40 boy scouts who camped on the Beaconsfield road near Miss O'Callaghan's Cardinia Park Hotel, giving the spot a military appearance in all save discipline and quiet. The camp was visited by many persons, who left with varied opinions as to the good work done by the youngsters. Camp was broken up on Monday afternoon, the boys returning to town by the evening train.10

  • 1 Feb 1934: Councillor Walter Lawson Appleby, of Brunswick, died suddenly at Pakenham on Tuesday Councillor Appleby, who was aged 64 years, had been in ill-health for some time. He was for many years connected with the building trade. He was a member of the Brunswick City Council for 12 years, and was a leading member of the Sons and Daughters of Temperance Friendly Society. He was chairman of the trustees of the governing body of the society, and he had occupied the office of Most Worthy Patriarch, the principal office of the order. He was secretary of the Brunswick branch for about 25 years. Councillor Appleby was a keen bowler, having played in A pennant matches for the Prince's Park Club. He was secretary of the club for five years He is survived by a widow, a son, and two daughters, one of whom is married to Councillor W. P. Jacobs, of Brunswick. The funeral will leave Councillor Appleby's former residence, 19 Rose street, West Brunswick, at 3.30 pm today, for the Melbourne General Cemetery.16

  • 17 Dec 1927: CONSTABLE ATTACKED. DISTURBANCE AT BERWICK. Two Young; Men Imprisoned.
    Strong comments on the conduct of a party of visitors to Berwick on Sunday were made by the chaírman of the Bench at the Berwick Police Court yesterday when two young men from South Melbourne were sentenced to imprisonment. The case arose out of a so called cricket match which was to have been played on the grounds of the Cardinia Park Hotel. Early in the afternoon Mounted Constable Walters received a call to the police where the visitor had gathered and where it was reported, a disturbance was in progress. The arrival of the constable, and subsequent happenings were described in court. Jack Mullins and James Richardson both of South Melbourne were charged with having assaulted Bernard Walsh and Leonardo Cas, and with having resisted arrest. The bench was occupied by Messrs W J Harvey Smith (chairman), E. Green, G. I. Wilson, J. Anderson, W. Wilson, and D. M. MacGregor, J.P.s. Mounted Constable Walters said:- When I arrived at the scene about 100 pctrons present Many of them more or less under the influence of liquor. I arrested the man who appeared to be the ringleader of the disturbers. He said that he would go quietly, so I did not put the handcuffs on. him. In the excitement that followed, he escaped. I then tried to arrest Mullins and Richardson and thev resisted violently. The crowd behaved more like wild animals, than men and women. I was attacked, and I consider that I was lucky to come out of it alive. Not one person in the crowd would come to my assistance. After a severe struggle I put the two men into motor car, and took the to the police station. Mullins and Richardson, in defence denied the charges. Mullins said that he was not drunk, but he had had a lew drinks. Mullins, and Richardson were each sentenced to imprisonment for one month on the charge of assault, and to imprisonment for two months for having resisted the constable in the execution of his duty. The sentences were made cumulative, and were imposed without the option of a fine. The men were each ordered to pay £1/6/6 costs. The chairman of the Bench said that black guardism and hooliganism would not be tolerated at Berwick, nor would persons from other places be permitted to come there and create annoyance to law abiding residents.
    The congratulations of the Bench were extended to Mounted Constable Waiters for his plucky action and the sergeant was requested to bring the matter under the notlce of the authorities.2

  • 3 May 1930: POLICE NEWS. "SUBTLE CRAFT." Fortune-telling Alleged.
    Matilda Sarah Marsden, of Ida street, North Fitzroy, was charged at the Fitzroy Court on Thursday with having on March 22, by means of subtle craft, defrauded Lily Eva Smith, a policewoman, of 2/6 by pretending or professing to tell her fortune.
    Policewoman Lily Eva Smith said that she went to Marsden's house and entered a room, where she seated herself opposite to Marsden. Marsden said:- "Will you give me an article to 'read'?"
    She handed her a wristlet watch, Marsden then said:- "You have been sorrowful all your life, because of happenings to others. Your father does not live with your mother, and left you four years ago because of drink. The guide tells me that you would have made a good nurse, healer, or medium. Do you know a boy named Arthur? He tells me to tell you always to stand firm." She did not know anyone of that name. When leaving she handed Marsden a marked 2/ piece and 1/, and received 6d. change.
    Mr. Jones (for Marsden) submitted that there was no case. Miss Smith had not been defrauded since she had not gone there believing.
    After further argument Sergeant Murphy said that another charge would be substituted. He would withdraw the present charge.
    Marsden was thereupon charged with having by means of subtle craft or device, by palmistry or otherwise, professed or pretended to tell fortunes and thereby defrauded or imposed upon a person.
    The hearing of this charge was adjourned until Monday.9
  • 6 May 1930: POLICEWOMAN'S FORTUNE TOLD.
    When Matilda Marsden, of Ida street, North Fitzroy, appeared at the Fitzroy Court this week charged with having by subtle means professed to tell the fortune of Policewoman Smith, the charge was dismissed. Subsequently another charge was preferred. At the Fitzroy Court on Monday Marsden was charged with having on March 22, by means of subtle craft, means or device, by palmistry or otherwise, professed or pretended to tell the fortune of Policewoman Smith, thereby defrauding or imposing upon her.
    Mr W H Jones for Marsden contended that the second charge was practically identical with the first.
    The objections were overruled by Mr J B Wade, P. M., who, in convicting Marsden, said that he would impose a fine of only ?, in default imprisonment for a fortnight, because Smith had been put to the cost of coming to the court twice.
    A stay of proceedings for a fortnight with the object of reviewing the decision was granted.10
