    A very pretty wedding was celebrated on Wednesdy last, at Berwick, the contracting parties being Miss E. L. Diller, and Mr. John Paternoster. The ceremony took place at the residence of Mrs. Fleming, a very old friend of the bride, and was performed by the Rev Mr. Harvey, pastor of the church of England. The bride was attired in a costume of dove colored voile, with the usual accompanying bridal wreath and bouquet of flowers, and looked charming. She was attended by Miss Paternoster, who was robed in cream Suraih, a very pretty dress. Mr. Mat. Paternoster attended the bridegroom, whilst Mr. McNabb of Prahran gave the bride away. After the ceremony, the company to the number of about 30, sat down to a sumptuous repast, provided by Mrs. Fleming, which proved a very pleasant function. The health of the bride was proposed in happy terms by the Rev. Mr. Harvey, and responded to by the groomsman. Numerous toasts followed, and the party broke up in time to allow of the departure of the happy couple for Melbourne by the evening train.
    Prior to this the bridal party was photographed. The presents were numerous and appropriate, and amongst them were the following :-Mrs. Bain, flower-stand and d'bleys; Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Occupation* Local auditor of electoral register & register of births and deaths.1 
Book*Paternoster, Simon, Berwick, a native of England, born in 1832, came to Victoria in 1852 by the ship Dinapore. Though he had learned the drapery trade at home, he spent ten years at the gold diggings and then went to Berwick, where he commenced business in High-street as general storekeeper, dealing in grocery, drapery, stationery, chemists' wares, ironmongery, boots and shoes, hay and corn, paints and oils, &c.
He has a stock of the value of £8000, and his business premises are worth £4000. Mr. Paternoster has half-an-acre of land, with shop and private dwelling thereon. He keeps five horses and three vehicles. In 1864 he married Miss Harbrow, by whom he has a family of eight children.2

Sir, We the selectors and residents of Gembrook and Packenham County of Mornington humbly request that you will please order that a new road may be surveyed through the selection of Mr Arthur Knight in the Parish of Packenham. This road we request will be to start from the north east corner of Mr Knight's selection, thence south west distant at about five chains more or less and being west from the two chain road and thence ending at the south east corner of the said selection. This new line of road will be on the side of a very high hill and with little expense can be made into a very good road. The present one chain road is too steep that it is almost impossible for us to get either up or down it and ought never to have been surveyed in that place. Trusting that you will give this a favourable consideration.

I, Alfred Chalk of Beaconsfield in the State of Victoria Poundkeeper and Estate Agent do solemnly and sincerely declare THAT I have been a resident of Beaconsfield in the District for over 25 years and have known the land the subject of the application (and which land is shewn and coloured red on the survey plan dated 6th August 1908 made by Mr W P Steane M C E and now produced and shewn to me and marked "A") throughout that time and during part of such time I acted as agent for a former owner of the said land and in respect thereof.
That the fences enclosing the said land and erected on the boundaries thereof as shewn on the said Survey plan or the renewals of such fences as hereafter mentioned have been continuously standing and subsisting (save only while the new fences hereafter mentioned were being erected) for at least twenty years - About 5 years ago a new cyclone fence was erected on the southern boundary of the said land as shewn on the said survey plan and a similar fence was shortly afterwards erected on the Woods Street boundary both such new fences replacing old fences which were then standing and which were never removed for the purposes and such new fences were erected on the same lines as the old fences they replaced.
That to the best of my knowledge and belief the boundaries as shewn on the said survey plan have always been accepted and regarded by the respective owners and occupiers of the said land and of the adjoining lands as the true boundaries of the said land and I have never heard of any dispute with regard thereto.

  • 9 Jul 1879: BERWICK POLICE COURT. Friday, July 4. (Before Messrs. Wilson, Palmer, Officer and Elmes.)
    The Queen v William Henry Phillips ; a charge of stealing four head of cattle. Prisoner appeared on remand from Melbourne, and Mr A. Read appeared to defend him. Senior Constable Kilfedder prosecuted.—All witnesses having left the Court, the prosecutor said that about, April, last year, a man named Ring gave prisoner nine head of cattle to graze. On asking for them some time after, prisoner said four had broken out of the paddock. He afterwards offered to give them up, but did not. Prisoner was arrested, and the cattle taken possession of by the police.—Richard Ring examined : Said he was a farmer, residing at Dandenong. In April, last year, or Good Friday 1878, prisoner took nine head of cattle from him to graze. He was to keep them in a paddock near Berwick. The charge was to be 7s. each per quarter. Five had been sent home. [At this stage Mr. Read pointed out that the offence was committed at Dandenong]. The cattle were branded R.R. The five head were sent home to him as they calved. The four not returned were three red heifers and one spotted one. When asked for the other four, prisoner said he had sent them to a paddock at Pakenham. The cattle were about nine months in possession of prisoner when the four were asked for. Prisoner said afterwards that the man into whose paddock he had put them at Pakenham would bring them to the Dandenong market to him. They were not brought. Demanded the cattle from prisoner several times since. He promised to pay the value of the cattle at 10s per week. Would have taken the money, but did not get any of it. Prisoner said the cattle were lost. To the Bench : The money offered was to be in payment for the cattle. Was not aware of what had become of the cattle when he agreed to take th money offered. His reason for offering to accept the money was that he might be recompensed for the loss of his cattle. Did not know then that the cattle were stolen. Knew that the four missing head of cattle had been recovered. Had seen the cattle in the Courtyard this morning. They are the four missing cattle the same he gave to prisoner to graze for him. Had not himself sold, nor, did he authorize any person to sell those cattle. Heard prisoner swear at Dandenong that the cattle were lost, and said that he was not responsible; and that he had put them into a paddock at Pakenham. Did not give prisoner permission to remove the cattle from his paddock at Berwick. To the Bench : The arrangement with prisoner was that the cattle were to be kept in the paddock at Berwick. Did not know the date when prisoner offered to pay for the cattle by weekly payments in lieu of the cattle being returned. It was made this year. It was before he ascertained that the cattle were stolen that he offered to accept payment.
    To Mr. Read : It was Constable Kilfedder who first told him the cattle were stolen, and that he would recover the cattle for him without any cost. The Constable came to me. The cattle were more valuable now than when prisoner had got them. Value them at £3 a head. Prisoner had offered £2 10s. for them. Asked £12 from prisoner and would not take less. Offered to take 10s. a week if security was given for payment. Had summoned prisoner to Dandenong Police Court on July 14th for illegal detention of the cattle. Prisonier did not send to tell him that four of the cattle had got out. Prisoner told him in January that the cattle had got out of the paddock. Had applied to prisoner at least ten times for the money he had promised. Prisoner would not speak to me before a witness.—Simon Paternoster examined : Had a transaction with prisoner about cattle on 16th January last. He said he had cattle for sale. There were about ten or twelve in the yard. He picked out those he said were grazers, and offered him the balance, six, at first; not being able to agree as to price; prisoner put in another cow, which witness agreed to take with the other six for £18. Paid the money and got a receipt in prisoner's hand writing. The receipt produced is the same. Prisoner gave him delivery of the cattle, and he took them to his farm at Gembrook. The cattle in the Court yard he believed to be four of those he had purchased. To Mr. Read : The cattle were sold openly, and witness was not asked to conceal them. Prisoner had been in the habit of grazing and dealing in cattle. Valued the four in the yard at £10. He bought them to settle a contra account against prisoner, and probably gave a higher price than they were worth. Wm. McCraw, examined : Accompanied last witness to purchase cattle about six months since from prisoner. He said he had cattle for sale, and helped to yard them. He afterwards drafted out four heifers and two cows, to sell to Paternoster. Another cow was added, and the lot purchased by Paternoster at £18. Took delivery of them from prisoner. The cattle were branded RR on milking rump. Had possession of the cattle since then. The cattle in the Court yard were four of these purchased by Paternoster from prisoner. To Mr. Read : Only four of the cattle were branded R R. Knew prisoner to have been a dealer in cattle. Had never himself made mistakes in buying cattle.—Constable Kilfedder, the prosecutor, was then sworn, and stated that from information received about stolen cattle he arranged with Ring to meet him at Paternoster's farm at Gemnbrook; on 23rd of last month. Ring pointed out four heifers which he claimed and gave into his (witness's) charge, and on the following day took out a warrant at Dandenong, against prisoner for stealing same. Prisoner was arrested on that warrant. Prisoner said he expected to be arrested, but asked how he could steal cattle that were given him to graze. The cattle in the yard were those given to him by Ring. For the defence Mr. Read urged that from the evidence of Ring the case was out of Court, as Ring had offered to accept payment for the cattle, and thus compound a felony.—(The Bench held that the cattle at that time were supposed to be lost—not stolen).—Mr. Read produced a number of prisoner's receipts, which did not give the brands of cattle purchased, and urged that prisoner had simply made a mistake as to the brands. It was but recently that a very respectable man, Mr. Souter, sold two of Mr. Officer's cattle. In mistake Mr. Officer might have prosecuted, but he knew it was but a mistake. He quoted similar cases to show that prisoner had merely made a mistake. No secresy had been practised. Ring supposed the cattle were lost, and offered to take £12 for them, but afterwards summoned prisoner to Dandenong Police Court for illegal detention. If the cattle had been stolen, Ring would be entitled to possession of them from the present holder. The cattle came properly into prisoner's possession, and they were lost out of the paddock. Prisoner was not in a position to pay the 10s. a week promised. Under the Act it seemed as if Ring had compounded a felony. He now came to ask the Bench to imprison the young man before them. He urged that the prisoner was a young man of good character, whose only fault was that he had not been successful in money matters. He blamed the Constable, for urging on the case against prisoner. The Bench should pause before they committed his client, as a stigma would attach to him and his family all his life, even though a jury would not convict him, and he believed no jury would convict him. The cattle prisoner sold he believed to be his own.—The Bench retired and on resuming the Chairman (Mr Palmer) said the Bench considered there was evidence enough to warrant them in conimitting prisoner.—Mr. Read called John Ring.—The Bench considered the case closed.—Mr. Read : I did not expect your Worships to commit.—Witness, Ring : It was since January he heard the cattle were lost. It was prisoner that told him of the loss of the cattle. Never heard of any price offered by prisoner for the cattle.—The Bench accepted on behalf of prisoner the same bail as before.—ln reply to the Chairman of the Bench, prisoner said he would reserve his defence.   • 26 Feb 1914: The observance of their golden wedding day was celebrated by Mr and Mrs Simon Paternoster in the Town Hall, Camberwell, on the evening of the 16th inst., when some 250 of their old and new friends sat down to an inviting demi-banquet at 8 o'clock, the toastmaster for the auspicious occasion being Cr. W. Close. Mr. Paternoster is a son of the late Mr. George Paternoster, who was a well known and successful chemist in the Old Kent Road, London, and was born there in 1832, whilst Mrs. Paternoster is a daughter of the late Mr. Wm. Harbrow, of Narre Warren. They were mar ried at South Brighton in this State on the 16th of February, 1864, by the Rev. Thos. Edmeades. Mr. Paternoster ar rived in this State in 1852, being then about 20 years old. Possessed with in domitable pluck, will power, and shrewd brains, he at once set to work to carve out his fortune, and, after 16 years, had saved enough to start a small grocery and produce business in Berwick. For 10 years he worked this up, once every week travelling all night and most of the day on his cart from Berwick to Melbourne, collecting butter, eggs, bacon, &c., and selling them on his arrival in the Metropolis, and buying goods, etc., for his store at Berwick, returning home as heavily laden as when he left. This en terprise and energy soon received its re ward, and a splendid brick store soon took the place of the little wooden one. Some few years later he opened a store in Pakenham, and four years afterwards, another store at Beaconsfield. The Pakenham business proving successful, he a few years ago pulled down the old store and erected on the site, at a cost of some £2000 one of the finest country stores in the State. He has now amassed a small fortune, and gives as the secret of success and long life—he is now 82 years of age—the early upbringing and training by his parents. For 50 years this exemplary couple have worked and toiled hand and heart together in the battle of life, and are now living their lives out in affluence and comfort. His three business places are managed by his three sons, Mat, George and William respectively. Mr. Paternoster him self attends at each store once a week, going through the books and signing necessary cheques, etc. They have a family of 8 children living, and not a single death in the 50 years, 17 grand children and 2 great grandchildren. Some years ago they bought a property, Clapham, Prospect Hill-rd., Camberwell, - where they have since resided, and where all their friends wish they may continue to live for many years, and amongst the many oil paintings there, one by their daughter, Mrs. Agnes McDonald [sic], is the most cherished by them, as it represents their early bush home in the then wilds of Gembrook, previous to their settling in Berwick.43

  • 7 Dec 1926: The death occurred on Sunday night of Mr Simon Paternoster, of Clapham, Prospect Hill road, Camberwell. Mr Paternoster was formerly in business at Berwick and Pakenham. He was born in London in 1832 and arrived in Victoria when he was aged 20 years. He travelled to the goldfields and was one of the early prospectors at the Mount Ivor diggings. He took an active part in the riots at Ballarat in 1854, and returned to Melbourne in the early 60's. Mr Paternoster leaves a widow seven children, 17 grandchildren, and 19 great-grandchildren.45

  • 6 Jun 1885: ARRIVAL OF THE S. S. BOMBAY WITH IMMIGRANTS.
    Quite unexpeciedly and without any coastal report, the Orient Company's chartered steamship, Bombay, from Plymouth, with immigrants, arrived in the harbour at 3 o'clock yesterday morning, after a capital passage of 51 days. Outrageous diseases having been prevelent on board during the passage, the Bombay was not showed up the harbour, but anchored in quarantine to await orders from the health authorities. Soon after daylight, Dr. Sieley boarded the vessel, and spent several hours examining the new arrivals and their apartments.
    The ship herself was found to be in the perfection of order, whilst the immigrants and their quarters are said to have presented a tidy and tr n appearance. Anxious inquiries were made in town as to how long the vessel would be detained, and somehow or other a rumour got afloat that she would be released from quarantine during the day. This would undoubtedly have been the case but for the fact that measles and scarlatina had broken out on board during the passage and carried off several children. The first case of measles occurred on the eighth day out, and before the malidy was stamped out no less than 140 cases had been recorded. There were several cases of scarlatina, and altogether seven deaths all of young children, took place. Three died from measles, one from scarlatina, and three from exhaustion. There were two births. On leaving Plymouth, according to the official documents, the Bombay had on board 160 single men, 112 single women, 73 married men, 100 married women, 79 boys, 79 girls, and 23 infant;, making a total of 626 souls. Dr Beattie, so well and favourably known here, is medical officer; and Dr Crusse is his assistant, Mrs Eagen fills the position of matron, and Miss Pinkerton is the sub matron. The Bombay is an iron steamer of the cargo-carrying type. She belongs to Messrs Nelson, Donkin and Co. who also own the Euxine and Suez, which have been here.
    The Bombay is built on the same lines as the Suez, the only difference being that she is larger. Captain W. B. Inch is in command of the Bombay. She left Plymouth on April 14, at 5 p.m., and with the exception of one heavy gale encountered in the Bay of Biscay, she had a fine-weather passage to Teneriffe. Some of the deck fittings were carried away in the storm. The line was crossed on April 28, in long. 8deg. west, and the meridian of the Cape crossed on May 11. Off Cape Otway a violent westerly gale with heavy rain were encountered, but fine weather prevailed on the coast. The Bombay will probably be released from quarantine to-morrow. She has been detained in order that the passengers' wearing apparel, &c., may be cleansed.12
