    Superintendent E. Ashton said that the application was unique as the bailiffs had been in possession for some time. There had not a been a drop of liquor taken into the place for six weeks. He had received a petition from residents in the locality arguing that the application be refused.

David Russell, whose untimely death is reported elsewhere, worked most of his life with the Berwick owned business of Loveridge's, and succeeded his father as Manager of the B. U. store on Bill’s retirement shortly after his 70th birthday.
Bill Russell recalls the scene at Charing Cross around the outbreak of World War 1:
The Milk Bar (presently leased by Tom Van der Dolder, previously by Allens and Cooks, and owned retrospectively by Beckwith, Stuckett, Pingo, Colles and Mrs G. Thompson) was a confectionery and fruitmongery conducted by Horner and Funnell. Immediately adjacent (now Mick O’Riley and Anne McKay's art/craft enterprise) was a grocery conducted by Bill Berglund, whose father created “The Towers” on the road after his own name.
Across Halford Road was Tom “Sport” Brady’s hire coach shed (now still exhibiting well-weathered petroleum advertisements). A former garage owner in Melbourne, Tom retired to B. U. and lived in a small in-built section of the building which was formerly the co-operative fruit packing shed at Beaconsfield railway station. Across the Emerald Road, now Jack Stephen’s butcher's shop, was “Boss” Shorthouse’s headquarters for a Royal Mail and passenger horse coach/bus service. (Later Bill Berglund’s grocery moved to this site).
Alongside it, now Loveridges, was John Nathan’s general store. (Nathan’s first store opposite the Cenotaph, now Cr Keith Ewenson’s, was burnt down. He set up next door to the Salisbury Road Hall, then moved to the Loveridge’s site in 1929. Here John Glissman had constructed the present building, employing some of the timber from the Village's first school.)
Bill Russell, who lived with his family in Berwick, came into Loveridge’s employment as counter hand and delivery man in the early 1930’s when Loveridges bought the business from Nathan.
Trading at that time continued to 10 pm. on Saturday nights to cater for the influx of weekend holiday-makers. Wednesdays were closed days. Bill slept in the store for a month then brought his family to rent "Rosemont" in A’Beckett Road (now Mrs Atkinson's).
When Bill Noblet managed Loveridge’s (succeeding Syd Dean), Bill Russell moved into the Berglund shop and cottage at the rear, and subsequently purchased it. When Mrs. Russell died about 18 years ago, the former grocery shop (then acting as a bed-sitting room) was leased to Jack Stephens. Prior to this Jack was a taxi cab operator in Emerald.
Among Bill Russell’s regular chores some 40 years ago was the delivery of 44 gallon drums of lime-sulphur to the many orchards, by horse and dray. Later it was in the comfort of a 13 model Ford motor truck.
Bill ultimately took over the management of Loveridge’s for 4 years, before son David was to give him a well earned rest. Like the publicity he received when phasing out of a long association with the store, Bill's mother Celia came very much into the limelight when she celebrated her 100th birthday at the Pine Grove Hotel.

    Willie Noblet who lives at Ouyen, writes:—Dear Uncle Ben, I will now take for my subject the "District of Ouyen." Ouyen is a small township in the Mallee, which is about nine years old. I have been living here for one year. It is a very sandy district, and is splendid for growing wheat. The summer here is very hot, but this season has been the coolest that the residents have known for some time. It will be a better place when the water is laid on, as there will be plenty for household use and for gardens. Our school is getting made larger, and there are about 96 children attending it. I am 10 years of age. Hoping to see this letter in print. Please may I write again?
    [Certainly, Willie, write again.—Uncle Ben.]14
  • 26 Jan 1918: William Noblet, who lives at Ouyen, writes:—Dear Uncle Ben,—I will take for my subject this time "William Wilberforce." In the olden days the people of Rome sailed over to Africa, and coaxed the Africans to come on board their ships by showing them mirrors and other bright instruments which the natives like. The Africans got excited, and came to the ships to get these things, but the Romans caught them and sailed back with them to sell them as slaves. If these slaves disobeyed their masters they would be thrashed with iron rods. After a few days of this slavery a youth of 14 began to think how wrong it was that these people should be treated in such ways. This youth's name was Wilberforce. He began to write papers to Parliament, to ask thein to give up their slaves, but at first they only laughed and jeered, but afterwards they, too, began to think how wrong it was that those people should be sold as slaves. So the law was passed to abolish slavery just three days before William Wilberforce died. I am 10 years old.15

  • 21 Jun 1946: Man And Wife Killed When Struck By Car
    Mr William Noblet, 80, retired farmer, of Robinson st, Dandenong, was killed instantly on Wednesday night when he was struck by a car while crossing Lonsdale st, Dandenong.
    Mr Noblet, who had lost the sight of one eye, failed to see the car approaching on his blind side.
    Mrs Emily Noblet, 70, his wife, who was accompanying him and is totally blind, suffered a fractured pelvis, fractured ribs and head injuries, from which she died yesterday in Alfred Hospital.19
  • 26 Jun 1946: Lonsdale St. Claims 2 More Victims. Man And Wife Killed When Struck By Car
    COMING ON TOP of the recent tragedy, in which three persons were killed a few hundred yards up the road, last Wednesday night’s tragic double fatality in Lonsdale St., in front of the Dandenong P.O., shocked all Dandenong. The victims were Mr. and Mrs. William Noblet, of 56 Robinson St., Dandenong, well-known residents for the past 15 years.
    Hit by a car coming from Melbourne just after dark, Mr. Noblet was killed instantly and Mrs. Noblet received extensive injuries from which she died in tlhe Alfred Hospital next day.
    Mr. Noblet, who celebrated his 80th birthday last April, was surprisingly active for his years but had lost the sight of one eye as the result of a previous accident many years ago. He and Mrs. Noblet had apparently been across to the post office and were recrossing the street. It was dark at the time and the lighting at this spot is very poor.
    It is surmised that Mr. Noblet failed to see the car approaching on his blind side, and as Mrs. Noblet was herself nearly blind, she, too, failed to notice its approach. As they stepped from the shadows the car hit them. Mr. Noblet was killed instantly and Mrs. Noblet, who was 70 years of age, sustained a fractured pelvis, fractured ribs and head injuries. She succumbed to these next day.
    News of the fatality caused wide spread sorrow in the town, where the two victims were well-known and liked.
    “Bill” Noblet—as he was more familiarly known—was a fine old chap, remarkably alert for his years and possessed of a kindly and friendly nature. He was born at Talbot, where his father was a cordial manufacturer. A carpenter by trade he went to Donald in 1910 and then took up residence in Ouyen in 1916. During his 15 years in the Mallee he and his wife made many firm friends. In 1931 Mr. and Mrs. Nobleb decided to retire to Dandenong to spend the evening of their life near their children. Their son, Bill, is well-known as manager of Loveridge’s store at Upper Beaconsfield, and their daughter, Ollie (Mrs. H. Matthews) lives in Dandenong. An other son, Fred, is still in Ouyen, and their eldest daughter, Mrs. Frank Gill, resides in the suburbs.
    To them all we extend heartfelt sympathy in sorrowful circumstances of the loss of a devoted mother and father. The late Mrs. Noblet was a native of Allandale.
    MANY MOURNERS AT DOUBLE FUNERAL
    There was a large crowd at the double funeral on Friday when the two caskets were placed in the same hearse and interred in the same grave at Spring Vale, after an impressive service by the Rev. Macmichael. The pall-bearers were Messrs. B. Tharle, A. Paydon, C. Matthews, J. Grigg, F. Patterson, R. Matthews, J. S. Loveridge, D. Birss, K. Ryan, O. C. Shave, G. F. Grenda, R. Grigg, A. Cleary, P. Woodley, W. Titcher and K. Nevins.
    Funeral arrangements were in the hands of W. J. Garnar and Son.20,21
