  • 20 Apr 1949: OBITUARY. MRS. H. PENNEFATHER. THERE WAS general regret throughout the Berwick district on April 18th, when it became known that Mrs. Mabel Annie Rose Pennefather, wife of Mr. Hugh Pennefather, of “Ardsley,” Berwick, had passed away at the age of 83. She had not been in good health for several weeks. A woman of sterling qualities the late Mrs. Pennefather was held in affection by all who knew her.
    Born in Carlton, she was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Martin Howy Irving, her father being a Professor at the Melbourne University.
    All sympathise with Mr. Pennefather, sons and daughters, in their grievous loss. The funeral, which was a private one, took place this morning, when Rev. W. P. Daunt conducted the service at the Spring Vale Crematorium Chapel. W. J. Garnar and Son directed the funeral.11

  • 28 Jun 1877: SERIOUS FIRE AT ARARAT.
    A fire that at one time seemed to threaten half the township occurred this morning at half-past 1 o'clock, when the Courthouse Hotel, a large, old, rambling building of 30 rooms, was entirely consumed, together with the stock and furniture, in little over half an hour. The stationer's shop of Mr. John Cannon, agent for The Argus and The Australasian, was completely gutted, and all the stock destroyed. The origin of the fire is unknown, except that it began in the centre of the hotel, and was first discovered by two of the landlord's young family. The alarm was given, and the rest of the family escaped in their nightdresses, and nothing more. Mr, Gilchrist had no timo to return to his bedroom, after arousing the inmates, to save his cash-box, (which contained £32 in notes), his watch, and his clothes. Mr. Cannon's house next door was a substantial brick three-story building at the back, with an old weatherboard shop in front. His family were safely moved, but with few minutes to spare. A strong westerly breeze was blowing, and all the inhabitants on the south side of Barkly street np to the next brick building to the east, belonging to Mr. James Galbraith, surgeon, piled up their stock and furniture in the streets. To the west communication was interrupted by a right-of-way, and the brick store of Mr. Thomas Kneale, ironmonger. The pressure of water from the Langi Ghiran dam was at its fullest, and of this the fire brigade availed themselves so successfully that they prevented the fire from spreading, although the next building to Mr. Cannon's is a wooden one, and the wooden party walls stood within 6in. of each other. Too much credit cannot be given to the brigade, under Captain Basham, for on looking at the spot this afternoon it seems impossible to understand how the progress of the flames was stopped. The hose had to be played occasionally on the ruins up to 9 o'clock this morning. The insurance companies interested are the Victoria, £800 on Cannon's premises and stock, and £500 on the Courthouse Hotel building; and the Liverpool and London and Globe, £100 on the stock and furniture of the hotel. Mr Cannon estimates his losses at more than double the sum insured.8
  • 8 Jun 1904: ARARAT.—A very old resident of this district, Mr John Cannon, agent for "The Argus," died on Tuesday at the age of 75 years. He was a colonist of 54 years' standing and he came to Ararat in the early days of the gold rush establishing the news agency and stationery business which he carried on until his death. Mr Cannon was, for over 25 years, secretary to the Ararat Hospital and Benevolent Asylum, resigning the post at the close of last year. He was also secretary to the Gas Company, and an old and valued member of the committee of the Presbyterian Church.9

    Cannon’s Crossing, Upper Beaconsfield. —The crossing asked for by Mr. Cannon is situated on a short length of road leading from Pine Grove-road into a bush paddock. The road has never been opened up to traffic, and is now fenced off. The gully over which the crossing is required is at the west end of the road near Mr. Cannon’s paddock. To construct a crossing over this gully to carry vehicle traffic would be costly and troublesome. Boggy springs extend out from the gully for about a chain on the east approach, and would require to be drained and formed before any traffic could get over them. A small culvert would be required in the gully, and the creek should be opened up through the adjoining property to let the water away.16

Her name is listed on the Honour Board at the Upper Beaconsfield RSL.
Her brother owned Runnymede, and her sisters were operating the guesthouse from 1912 to c1917.1,2

  • 18 Apr 1945: New Slipper Factory opened at Beaconsfield. On Wednesday last, April 11th, the Grosby Shoe Cos., of Melbourne opened a branch slipper factory at Beaconsfield. This company, following the advice of the Decentralisation Committee and at the request of the local A.L.P., has leased Robert’s Buildings alongside the Beaconsfield Station, made certain structural alterations and painted internally, installed a number of machines and catered generally for the comfort of the employees.
    As yet only a limited number of girls have been employed, but as these receive the necessary instruction and become efficient, others will be engaged. Before long employment will be available locally for as many women and girls as required.

Village Bell*Dec 1991 WHY GUYS HILL - MRS KATHERINE ROBERTS TELLS ALL !!! The "Kath Roberts Reserve" in Beaconsfield was so named by the Pakenham Shire as a compliment to an old and well respected resident of the town. Mrs Roberts who now lives in Berwick, is a charming, vibrant lady who has very good recall, and who has kindly provided the following information:
After she married her husband Herman in 1924, she assisted him in running a General Store which was on the corner of Wood Street and Beaconsfield Avenue. Soon after war broke out in 1939, the Roberts left the store and took over the Post Office at Beaconsfield.
In the early 40's, several pensioners from the area now known as Guy's Hill, asked if they could collect their pensions from the store there, rather than go all the way to Beaconsfield. This was arranged by the Roberts.
A little later when petrol rationing was introduced, a further request was made that the tickets for petrol also be made available at the store. This however, was only possible if the store was made a branch post office. Letters were written by local people to the Postmaster General's Department requesting this and about 1941, the request was granted.
The Department then wrote to Mrs Roberts asking her to submit suitable names for the new Post Office.
Mrs Roberts recalls "the storekeepers were a delightfully odd couple named Herb and Eadie Guy and the only name I could think of which would be suitable was Guy's Hill".
Mrs Roberts submitted only the one name and it was accepted by the Department. She admits "the Lukes were rather upset and wrote to the Department". The Luke family had built and run the original store in 1930, as well as making the Montuna Golf Course which opened in 1927. At the time there were also some letters to the papers and local controversy.
In 1981 the name Guy's Hill was officially recognised by the Shire following a motion put by Councillor Keith Ewenson, who on behalf of the Council made enquiries locally and received the impression that the name was generally acceptable. He noted a local opinion that "it would cost money to change it". Older names for the area are Inebriates Hill, Middle Beaconsfield and Lukes Hill.
A mystery remains - who were the Guys. There appears little known about them apart from the fact they had the store, possibly less than two years - and that Mrs Guy ran the store and he may have been a builder.   • 23 Nov 1988: Reserve named for Kathleen Roberts
    Pakenham Council has named a reserve in Kathleen Court, Beaconsfield after one of the district's most well known residents, Mrs Kath Roberts.
    The naming ceremony was held on Sunday when Mrs Roberts unveiled the sign board in the presence of councillors, local residents and representatives from the Beaconsfield Girl Guides.
    The suggestion to name the reserve after Mrs Roberts came from Beaconsfield girl guide Sharon Baker, who spoke at the naming ceremony. Sharon wrote to the Council in August, the proposal was put to the Berwick Pakenham Historical Society and it was whole-heartedly endorsed Mrs Roberts has had a long association with the district. She came to Beaconsfield with her husband "Mack" in 1924 and they ran the general store. Mack was a returned soldier. injured in France during the Great War.
    In 1929 they took over the Post Office which they ran for over twenty years.
    In those days it cost a penny to post a letter and a fourteen word telegram cost a shilling. There were two mail deliveries each day and one on Saturdays. The telephone exchange was manned 24 hours each day and occasionally there were problems with patrons from a local hotel using the telephone in the early hours of the morning.
    When Mack died in 1953 Kath stayed on at the Post Office for another three years.
    Mrs Roberts was born in the country village of Brandesburton in Yorkshire, England, and she came to Australia in 1911. Her father established a saddlery in Garfield and her mother opened a confectionery store.
    The family name was Beswick (pronounced Besik) and there is a street in Garfield with that name. They were involved in the establishment of St. Marys Anglican Church in Garfield. Today, at age 87, she has some firm advice for young people: "I pass by this way but once and any good I can do, let me do now."
    In his tribute to Mrs Roberts, Councillor Keith Ewenson said that she had always found time to talk with and be of help to young and old residents alike.
    "The naming of this reserve is only a small tribute in no way comparable with her contribution to our community," he said.
    Mrs Roberts has been a long term member of the Berwick/Pakenham Historical Society, she is a member of the Berwick R.S.L. and was treasurer of the Berwick branch of
    the Blind Auxiliary for 15 years. She retired voluntarily at 80.
    Her other interests included Berwick Legacy and the Beaconsfield Progress Association.
    She has many friends in the community because of her interest in people.
    Mrs Roberts' two daughters, Pat Reid and Mary Downing attended the naming ceremony with her grandchildren Andrew, Elizabeth and Anne, and great grandchildren. Catherine and David.19
