  • 15 Aug 1888: Last Thursday being election day every thing was in a more or less state of excitement. Who is going to be returned ? was the question asked on every side, and many were the answers. Some said Goff, others Hatfield. Both candidates worked hard to avert defeat, but Mr. Goff's friends and supporters rolled up, and when the result of the poll was declared he was returned by a large majority; and I think the ratepayers were wise, for in Mr. Goff they have a man who will look after their interests and see that they get a fair share of rates expended in their Riding. Not that Mr. Hatfield would not have done the same, but Mr. Goff has had two years experience as a Councillor in the Shire of Berwick which Mr. Hatfield had not and I think a great number took this into consideration and voted accordingly.   • 3 Nov 1925: Fruitgrowing Pioneer Dies
    Mr H H Hatfield, who died at his residence, Box Hill, yesterday, was one of the best known orchardists in the State. He was associated with the development of the fruit growing industry in that district for nearly half a century, and for many years he did much in endeavouring to develop the apple export trade. Apart from the management of his large orchard, which was regarded as one of the best kept places near to Melbourne, Mr Hat field took an active part in organising district horticultural displays. One of the best judges of apples und pears, and particularly of many varieties now little known by present-day growers, his services were always available, and readily accepted, in assisting to carry out the judging at all our more important shows, Mr Hatfield also took a leading part in the development of a large orchard property in the Pakenham district, and though this has since passed though many hands it is still one of the most productive plantations in that district.
    For many years Mr Hatfield was associated with the organisation of the Central Fruitgrowers' Association, of which he was president on several occasions. Owing to the services rendered that body, he was subsequently appointed a life member, and right up to the last he took an active part in forwarding the aims of that association. His good judgment and wide experience in many matters affecting the fruit industry resulted in his selection to represent the State at many conferences held through out Australia, and when a State Pomo logigal Centre was formed some eight or ten years ago, Mr Hatfield was one of the first selected to assist in the classification of our pome fruits.10

  • 23 Apr 1938: UPPER BEACONSFIELD FIRE. "Good Day for Burning Off." Police Court-Sequel.
    DANDENONG, Friday.— An outbreak of fire, which started in scrub country at Beaconsfield Upper in February last, and swept through several properties, was responsible for the appearance of Frank Leslie Knopton in the Berwick court of petty sessions to-day before Mr. Addison, P.M.
    Knopton was charged with aiding and abetting Con George Horrigan, of Upper Beaconsfield, to ignite inflammable material. Horrigan had said to Knopton, according to evidence given, that "it was a good day for burning off that block." Knopton replied that it was, but did not give orders for this to be done.
    John Richardson, of Berwick, a member of the Beaconsfield Upper Bush Fire Brigade, stated that a large number of volunteers had to be called out, and a "break"' had to be burned to prevent the fire from jumping across the main Emerald road.
    Knopton pleaded guilty. The police magistrate, in inflicting a fine of £10, said he regarded the offence as a serious one. Frank Leslie Knapton18
