Note* Albert Edward Dutton. A family owned business for 100 years, what began as a modest service station and repairs workshop in the back streets of Richmond is now an exclusive world class car showroom and established social landmark in the heart of South Yarra.
The legend began in a small Burnley Street garage in 1911 when Albert Octavius Dutton began creating coachwork for vehicles such as Rolls-Royce, Hispano and Isotta Franchini. Built by Albert, this was the first Dutton Building.
It wasn't until over 50 years later that Albert's son Albie Dutton began to develop the business into larger premises that would house a service and repairs workshop with a new prestige car and second hand car showroom.
In 1989, the second Dutton showroom was established on Church Street in Richmond, by Albie and his son Jeff Dutton, who renovated an old chocolate factory, creating a unique space for a prestige car dealership. Known as the doyen of rare and collectable sports cars, Jeff's expertise and interests extended into the auction world, consulting with Sotheby's and the Victorian Museum.
Because of this, the Dutton showroom has since become a meeting point for car aficionados alike, with a museum-like display of classic cars, auto-mobile memorabilia and artwork. It is also the first car showroom with an in-house cafe, Cafe Veloce, opening in 1990 by renowned restaurateur, Maurice Terzini (Caffé e Cucina, Otto, North Bondi Italian and Giuseppe, Arnaldo & Sons).
Now with the youngest Dutton generation on board (James and Simone), the third Dutton showroom has opened its door in the Dutton Building in South Yarra. Designed by renowned Melbourne architects, Plus Architecture - a joint venture of Fender Katsilidis and SJB Architects - the building location on Claremont Street provides a street level showroom, designed for displaying rare and classic automobiles.
The new Dutton showroom is home to one of the best selections of rare and exotic luxury cars in the Southern Hemisphere.1

    Not Guilty of Receiving.
    Albert Dutton, garage proprietor, Burnley street, Richmond, and his wife, Mrs Annie May Dutton, were charged before Judge Williams, in General Sessions on Thursday, with having at Richmond, between January 1 and August 22, received a quantity of oil, the property of C C Wakefield and Co. Ltd, knowing it to have been stolen. Mr. Sproule, Crown prosecutor, appeared for the Crown. Mr Cullity (instructed by Mr Sonenberg) appeared for both accused.
    The case for the Crown was that C C Wakefield and Company, oil merchants, had two stores in North Melbourne. Among the employees of the company was a man named Meyers, who had been one of their storemen. The Crown alleged that Meyers and Leslie Donald stole quantities of oil, and that Donald disposed of it to various people. Donald had, in fact, been convicted of stealing a large quantity of oil from the company, and he gave evidence that he knew Mr and Mrs Dutton, and had disposed of quantities of oil to them, some of which was delivered at or near their garage in Richmond, and some to a garage in Gardenvale and to another garage in South Yarra.
    The defence was a denial of the evidence given bv Donald. Evidence was given by both Dutton and his wife.
    The jury returned a verdict of not guilty, and both accused were discharged. Annie May Dutton11
  • 19 Apr 2006: Driving passion
    One-time carpenter James Dutton hung up his hammer to build a business selling luxury cars, boats and planes - reigniting a family interest in the motoring industry.
    James Dutton doesn't believe he is a workaholic. Sure, he has no time for a girlfriend at the moment but those recent 16-hour working days are, he says, because he enjoys working and because he knows with any start-up, "your focus has to be there".
    That focus on his most recent professional project began almost five years ago when Dutton, 31, started investigating the concept of creating a website to service clients who wanted to sell their cars through the Dutton brand name.
    After all, with a familial association with vehicles that stretches back to 1911 when his great-grandfather, Albert Octavius Dutton, founded a coachwork-building business that specialised in creating bodies for Rolls-Royce and Isotta-Franchini, the Dutton name has been synonymous with prestige vehicles.
    Today, having officially launched Dutton Direct in December 2004, Dutton's business has grown beyond luxury vehicles to cover a variety of luxury items including yachts, private planes and properties.
    "We have $745 million worth of listings on the site at the moment. How's business?" Dutton has a sharp intake of breath and smiles wearily. "Busy."
    Despite the growing interest in Dutton Direct, Dutton makes it clear he considers the business to be still in "set-up mode".
    Private capital raising, he says, has been the biggest challenge but, having set up Dutton International Holdings Limited, and with the help of a company called Capitalised, Dutton hopes the future will only get brighter.
    "We are an unlisted public company," he says. "We just have to prove ourselves first. We have various exit strategies for investors."
    Using the power of the old school tie has been something Dutton admits was invaluable. "I have pulled together all my old school mates - including an ex-DeLoitte accountant who's our company secretary. Everyone has helped."
    The influence of family remains strong. Describing his mother as his "backbone", Dutton points to a bowl of beautifully arranged flowers on the table in his South Yarra boardroom and laughs.
    "She comes in and does nice things like that," he says.
    His sister, Simone Dutton, a graphic designer, has been responsible for the Dutton Direct business cards and graphics, while his father is simply "really proud", Dutton says.
    "It's nice to be able to engage family into my own business and have them see what I can create," he says.12
  • 25 Mar 2010: The drive to succeed
    IT'S happy 99th birthday to the Dutton family's car dealership, the empire that Albert Octavius Dutton started in Burnley Street, Richmond, when toiling in his workshop to create coachwork for vehicles such as Rolls-Royces. The business passed to son Albie, grandson Jeff and great-grandson James, the man about town who took the enterprise online in 2004 with Dutton Direct: International Luxury Circle. James has done some research and believes Dutton is the oldest family-owned dealership in the world (toot your horn if you know otherwise). The alluring grin of the fourth-generation Dutton will be even wider next year when 100 candles are on the cake.13
