    Some very interesting observations on swallows from Joyce Lockey (Beaconsfield): — Again the swallows have built in our stables, and I noticed this morning that the mother took her four babies out for the first time. She took one at a time over to the roof of the house, and left them there sitting in a row. She soon returned, however, and gave the first baby an insect. Then the father came, and, missing the first and second, gave the third one something, The next time the mother came back she gave something to the fourth one. Then the father gave the second something.
    After that the mother fed the first baby again, and so on until they, had had enough. The father then took them one by one to try their wings. I also noticed that the mother waited with the others until the father came back.
    "Behind our stables on the grass I saw two little red-capped tits with four very small babies; and on the same patch of grass there were two other tits, and they also had babies. I went away for a time, and when I came back there were about 20 pairs of all kinds, and the mothers and fathers were very busy."24

Marriage-Notice15 Sep 1894 BUTLER—WILSON. The. wedding of Miss Lily Wilson, third daughter of Mr. John A. Wilson, of "Airlie," Malvern-road, Toorak, with Mr. Henry Butler, of the firm of Sargood, Butler and Nichol, of Melbourne, took place at "Airlie," Toorak, on Wednesday afternoon, September 5, in the novel manner of an American "surprise wedding." The idea originated in America last year, and was carried out for the first time in Australia on this occasion. According to this peculiar fashion, invitations were issued by Mr. and Mrs. Wilson for a dinner party on the Wednesday evening, to their nearest relatives. They were received in one of the drawing-rooms, which was most exquisitely decorated with choice exotics, white flowers predominating. This suggestive ornamentation of bridal blossoms, however, was not particularly noticed. When dinner was announced the guests were proceeding to the drawing-room when they were ushered into the drawing-room, into the presence of Miss Wilson and Mr. Butler, arrayed in bridal apparel, with the Rev. Mr. Alex. Marshall (of Scots' Church, Collins-street) completing the wedding party. The ceremony was at once commenced, Mr. Wilson giving his daughter away. The guests were much surprised, but were constrained to keep silence till the conclusion of the ceremony. The bride, who is a very pretty girl, looked particularly well in her wedding gown of rich ivory satin with a long court train and trimmings of the finest duchesse lace. The tulle veil was surmounted by a coronet of orange blossom, and a most charming bouquet was formed of the rarest white blossoms, with white satin ribbon streamers. The drawing-room was most beautifully adorned with white flowers and various floral devices suitable to the occasion. The Wedding March was played and the newly wedded pair and the astonished guests proceeded to dinner, which proved, when the surprise gave way to jest and merriment, a most brilliant repast. In the evening Mr. and Mrs. Butler left very quietly for a visit to the Gippsland Lakes, where they have spent a ten days' visit, having returned to town yesterday (Friday). On the afternoon of the wedding, Mr. Henry Butler gave a dinner at the Athenæum Club to a number of his bachelor friends, who were kept in ignorance of the approaching event, which took place two hours later. Mrs. Butler has received, within the last week, a number of very handsome presents.23

  • 11 Apr 1910: DEATH OF MR. HENRY BUTLER.
    It will be learned with widespread regret that Mr Henry Butler died yesterday at his residence, "The Grange'" Brighton Beach. He had been in indifferent health for some time, and last year he had a severe attack of bronchial asthma.
    The late Mr Butler was born in London, and was 68 years of age. He rose to the high position he occupied in the commercial world from a lowly beginning with a London firm of warehousemen. He was originally in the employ of Messrs Cook, Son and Company of London but when a young man he emigrated to Australia. Shortly after his arrival in Melbourne he made his way to Ballarat, where in the early days he became a partner in the firm of Messrs. Martin, Butler, and Nichol. The firm came to Melbouorne, and some years later, when Mr Martin had retired from the business, Mr Butler and Mr Nichol amalgamated with the late Sir Frederick (then Mr) Sargood, the new firm being known as Messrs. Sargood, Butler, and Nichol. Thereafter, for very many years, Mr Butler was associated with the firm, and he saw Melbourne grow from a comparatively small commercial centre to its present important position. About 10 years ago the firm became Messrs Sargood, Butler Nichol and Ewen. Mr Butler retired about seven years later, and since then the business has been conducted as Messrs Sargood Brothers.
    Although he did not himself seek public office, Mr Butler was the power behind the throne in many appointments. He took a very active interest in politics and municipal life and he was frequently consulted before candidates were announced. This was because Mr Butler's approval or disapproval of a candidature carried such weight. In commercial life, also, his opinions were always regarded with consideration, and experience generally showed his views to be sound. Then, again, in philanthrophic movements, he was recognised as the intermediary between the movers in a charity and the influential merchants of Flinders-lane. The secretary of a charitable movement probably knew hardly any other merchant, but he was almost certain to be personally ac quainted with Mr Butler. For many years it has been recognised that any movement which had been taken up by Mr Butler was sure of success. His personal appeal to his fellow-merchants, and in fact to many other influential men in the commercial life of Melbourne, was never made in vain.
    Recently, on the occasion of an extraordinary vacancy in the representation of the Southern Province in the Legislative Council, Mr Butler made a bid for Parliament but the seat was won by Mr Dickie. That was practically the only occasion on which he sought a public position. In charitable and educational movements, however, he took a great interest. A movement was initiated by the late Janet lady Clarke in 1904-5 with the object of raising funds to found mining and agricultural schools in connection with the Melbourne University. Mr Butler's sympathy was enlisted, and he accepted the position of honorary treasurer. The result of the movement was that £13,000 was raised, to which the Goverment added a grant for £1 for £1. Mr Butler was also connected with another movement for which Lady Clarke was responsible—the founding of the Trinity College Hostel.
    Some 15 or 16 years ago Mr Butler was one of a syndicate which won the famous St Albans sweep of £30,000. After his retirement from the firm of Sargood, Butler, Nichol, and Ewen, he was appointed a director of the Bank of Victoria. The late Mr Butler was twice married. There was one son by the first marriage — Mr Henry Butler — who is at present joint manager in London for Messrs Sargood Brothers, of Australia, and Sargood, Son, and Ewen Limited, of New Zealand. Some 16 years ago Mr Butler married a daughter of Mr J A Wilson, and he leaves a widow and a family of two sons and a daughter.
    The funeral will leave "The Grange," Brighton Beach at half-past 3 o'clock tomorrow aftenoon.30
  • 13 Apr 1910: The remains of Mr. Henry Butler were interred in the Brighton Cemetery yesterday afternoon, the Revs. Johnston Butler (St. Peter's Church of England, Brighton) and Hume Robertson (St. Leonard's Presbyterian Church, Brighton Beach) officiating it the graveside. The chief mourners were the two sons of deceased and Messrs. J. A. Wilson, J. H. Butler, H. L. Butler, and J. H. Propsting. The Lord Mayor of Melbourne (Colonel Burston), and Messrs. Edward Miller, M.L.C., D. McBryde, M.L.C., W. Drummond, J. D. Law, D. Love, H. McKay, and N. McGlashan acted as pallbearers Amongst the many others present were Messrs. Snowball, M. L. A., H. Sargood, J. Wright (Robert Reid and Co.), P. E. O'Keefe (Banks and Co.), R. Johnson (D. and W. Murray), and J. T. Hogarth (Royal Victorian Institute for the Blind).
    The funeral arrangements were in the hands of A. A. Sleight.31

  • 6 Dec 1911: An old and widely respected resident of Windsor Mr John Lardner died at his residence, "Shaftesbury," Windsor, last evening, in his 76th year. Mr Lardner was for many years chief clerk and acting deputy registrar of the Land Tax Office, and was well known in Anglican Church circles. For over 30 years he was honorary treasurer of the Diocesan Book Society, St Paul's Cathedral, and for a like period was super-intendant of All Saints Sunday-school. St Kilda. He leaves a widow and a grown-up family. His sons being well known in Melbourne commercial circles.14
