    The announcement is made that, owing to the death of its senior director, the old-established softgoods firm of McNaughton Love and Co. Pty. Ltd. has decided to go out of business. Accordingly its stock-in-trade has been offered to Robert Reid and Co. Ltd. That firm has agreed to purchase it and intends to distribute the goods for the benefit of its customers over the States in which it conducts business. The retiring firm was established in Victoria in the fifties. Several changes have occurred in its personnel. In 1859 it was known as Mackenzie, Love und Co., with the home house of J. C. McNaughton and Co. Later the firm traded as McNaughton Love and Co., and afterwards as William McNaughton Love and Co. In 1910 the business was incorporated as a proprietary company, in which form it exists to-day.
    Much regret is expressed in trading circles at the decision of the directors to go out of business.10

Book*Torrance, Rev. Dr. George William, M.A., Mus D., was ordained by the Bishop of Lichfield in 1865 for the curacy of St Mary's Shrewsbury, arrived in Victoria in December 1869, and was licenced Bishop Perry to the curacy of Christ Church, South Yarra, in February 1870. He was appointed in 1871 to the charge of St. John's, Melbourne during the absence of the incumbent, the Rev. John Barlow, and was subsequently associated in the duties of that parish with Mr. Barlow until the death of the latter in 1876. He was appointed acting head of Trinity college (affiliated to the Melbourne University) on the opening of that institution in 1872, and resigned the office on his appointment to the incumbency of All Saints' Geelong, by Bishop Moorhouse in 1877. In January 1878 he was promoted to his present incumbency of Holy Trinity Church, Balaclava, in succession to Archdeacon Stretch, by Bishop Moorhouse on the nomination of the trustees. In 1879 the degrees of Mus. Bac. and Mus. Doc.—for which the necessary "Acts" were sent home for performance—were, on the recommendation of Sir Robert Stewart, conferred on him by the University of Dublin, where he had graduated in 1864. Subsequently he was admitted Mus.D., ad eundem gradum, by the University of Melbourne. On the occasion of the Social Science Congress held in Melbourne in 1880, Dr. Torrance was elected President of the Fine Arts section, and delivered the opening address. In addition to his ministerial work he has given much time and attention to the study and practice of music, having begun as a chorister in Christ Church, Dublin, and pursued his studies in Germany. Among his other works, he produced in 1852 a new oratorio entitled the "Revelation," which was performed at the Melbourne Town Hall, under the direction of the composer. In connection with this matter, it may be mentioned that the organ in the church at Balaclava was specially constructed by Fincham for him to play during divine service, the key-board being placed close to the reading desk by means of trackers under the chancel. In 1883 Dr. Torrance was appointed by His Excellency the Governor one of the examiners for the Clarke scholarship at the Royal College of Music, London, and by the Exhibition Commissioners one of the judges in the recent competition for the opening cantata. In 1886 he visited Europe, and amongst other places was present with his protege, Ernest Hutcheson, a rising young Australian musician, at the famous " Wagner Festival " at Bayreuth. He returned to Victoria in 1887 and resumed the duties of his parish. Dr. Torrance was one of the first board of directors of the Royal Humane Society, in conjunction with the Hon. Geo. S. Coppin and the late Dr. Bleasdale, but was obliged to resign through pressure of work. He was one of the chief movers in "Ye Olde Englishe Fayre," got up in Melbourne in 1882 for Church Purposes. It was the first thing of its kind in the colony, and resulted in an unprecedented financial success—realising £3000 above expenses. Dr. Torrance was married in 1872 to the eldest surviving daughter of the late S. B. Vaughan, solicitor, an old and respected Victorian colonist.2

A marble tablet commemorates George William Torrance (1835-1907), clergyman, organist and composer, and his wife Annie Julia Torrance. Dr Torrance and his wife died in Ireland in 1907 within a few days of each other.
Torrance arrived at Williamstown in the Thomas Stephens on 15 December 1869. He was appointed to Christ Church, South Yarra, in February 1870 and next year became acting curate at St John's, La Trobe Street. In 1872 he was appointed acting principal of Trinity College, later affiliated with the University of Melbourne, which was opened in February. Torrance continued at St John's until 1877 when he was appointed to All Saints, Geelong.
He was at Holy Trinity, Balaclava, from 1878 to 1895, when the permanent church was built to J. Reed's design and a fine three-manual organ, built by G. Fincham, was installed. Torrance also acted as organist in 1880-82, donating his fee to the organ fund. The £600 it cost was fully paid by 1885 through Father Torrance giving recitals, collecting subscriptions and acting as the church organist to save the salary. He was dubbed ‘the disappearing parson’ because after finishing prayers he vanished behind the screen to play the organ.3

Extreme regret will be felt by their many friends at the announcement of the death of Dr Torrance and his wife at Kilkenny, Ireland. Mrs. Torrance died on August 17, and the death of Dr. Torrance occurred two days later.
As a youth, Dr Torrance was educated at Christ Church Cathedral, Dublin, which was then at the zenith of its reputation. At the age of 19 he composed an oratorio, "Abraham," which was produced under his leadership. It was accorded a most favourable reception, and Sterndale Bennett and other musicians urged its composer to prosecute his studies in London. He went, however, to Leipsic, and reaped considerable benefit, his music acquiring greater tone than it had previously possessed. Upon his return to Dublin he took a leading position among musicians, becoming conductor of several musical societies. he took his degree in arts at Trinity College, Dublin. He was at that time organist at St Anne's Church, and during the week in which he passed the examination for the degree of arts he produced a new oratorio, "The Captivity," the words of which were by Oliver Goldsmith. The work involved was phenomenal.
Dr. Torrance's brothers and sisters having come to Australia, he determined to join them. He arrived in Victoria in December, 1869, and became curate at South Yarra, and subsequently at St John's, Latrobe street. he opened Trinity College as a boardinghouse for students at the University, and was at its head until Dr Leeper's appointment as warden. Among the students were Bishop Stretch and Mr Justice Hodges. About this time Dr Torrance married Miss Vaughan, a daughter of Mr S. B. Vaughan, solicitor, of Melbourne. On the death of Mr Barlow, the imcumbent of St John's, Dr Torrance went to Geelong, where he was attached to All Saints' Church. He afterwards became incumbent of Holy Trinity Church, Balaclava, and during his incumbency a handsome new church and parsonage were erected free of debt. Dr Torrance was then unanimously appointed to the incumbency of St John's, Latrobe street, of which church he had formerly been curate. Here he had full scope for his energetic charitable work among the poor. At this time the death of his only daughter occurred, and, finding that he could no longer put his heart into parochial work, he resigned his position, and, with his wife, sailed for Ireland. For the past nine years Dr and Mrs Torrance resided at Kilkenny, where Dr Torrance was vicar-choral and librarian at S Canace's Cathedral and chaplain to the Bishop of Ossory.
Dr Torrace, who was a doctor of music of the Melbounre University, took a prominent part in the movement to complete the musical training of Ernest Hutchinson. Among Dr Torrance's productions were an oratorio, "The Revelation," which was presented in Melbourne; an ode for the opening of the Centennial Exhibition of 1888, which gained second prize; and a number of quartets and madrigals. These, unfortunately have been little heard in Melbourne.22

  • 21 Feb 1895: PRESENTATION TO THE REV. DR. TORRANCE.
    The Rev Dr Torrance late incumbent of Holy Trinity Church, Balaclava, and now of St John's, Latrobe street, was made the recipient ot a handsome present last evening from his former parishioners. The presentation took place in the schoolroom, Balaclava. Mr Larking on behalf of the parishioners handed Dr Torrance a purse of sovereigns and a revolving bookcase, and in doing so referred to the fact that Dr Torrance had left them after a 17 years' incumbency in which he had succeeded in winning their affection and esteem. Though Dr Torrance had parted from them his good influence would remain. Owing to the manner in which be had worked in connec tion with their fine organ, having succeeded in raising the money to pay for it within two years it was intended to attach a plate to the organ with an inscription to that effect Dr Torrance who was receivtd with cheers, thanked his old parishioners for this further proof of their affection. He was very much pleased to know that the inscribed plate was to be placed on the organ, for if there was one thing more than another that he would like his name coupled with it was the organ which was one of the most beautiful parish organs in Melbourne. (Applause.) He took the opportunity of congratulating the parish on the appointment of Mr Drought as his suc cessor. (Applause.) Mr Drought had a reputation as a writer and a preacher, and the work he had done in his former parish was an earnest of what he would do in Balaclava.
    Mr Larking then handed Mrs Torrance a brooch from the ladies of the guild working party and Dr Torrance returned thanks on her behalf. Dr Torrance has also received a group of photographs from the choir, and a clock from the Sunday school.

Australian Dictionary of Biography

George William Torrance (1835-1907), clergyman, organist and composer, was born at Rathmines, Dublin, son of George Torrance, master tailor, and his wife Elizabeth, née Flinn. A chorister at Christ Church Cathedral, Dublin, he attended its grammar and music schools and studied piano and organ. As a young man he was organist at several Dublin churches and at 19 he composed his first oratorio, 'Abraham', and conducted it with great success at its first performance in Dublin in 1855. In 1856 he went to Leipzig for further musical studies and on his return wrote an opera, 'William of Normandy', and in 1859 a second oratorio, 'The Captivity'. That year he entered Trinity College, Dublin, to study for the Church of England ministry (B.A., 1864; M.A., 1867; Mus.B., Mus.D., 1879). Ordained deacon in 1865 and priest next year, he held curacies at Shrewsbury, England, and in Dublin before deciding to join his brother in Victoria.

On 19 November he married Annie Julia Vaughan, daughter of a solicitor; they lived at the college until February 1876 supervising the few students then in residence. Torrance continued at St John's until 1877 when he was appointed to All Saints, Geelong. He was at Holy Trinity, Balaclava, from 1878 to 1895, when the permanent church was built to J. Reed's design and a fine three-manual organ, built by G. Fincham, was installed. Torrance also acted as organist in 1880-82, donating his fee to the organ fund.
In December 1879 Torrance was admitted D.Mus. (ad eund.) at the University of Melbourne, the first degree in music conferred by the university. On 27 June 1882 his third oratorio, The Revelation (Novello & Co. Ltd, 1899), was first performed in the Melbourne Town Hall. He visited Europe with his wife and daughter in 1886-87. Appointed an examiner of music teachers to the Education Department in 1888, with Dr S. McBurney he became a temporary inspector of singing in February 1892 to replace Dr J. Summers, but his services were only briefly required. Torrance was among the finest composers of the period; his works include numerous hymns and anthems, a chant book, and many songs and madrigals. In November 1880 as president of the Fine Arts section he addressed the Social Science Congress, Melbourne, on music; he was an adjudicator at musical competitions and an examiner to the Royal College of Music for the (W. J.) Clarke scholarships. In 1888 he formed the choir for the new St Paul's Cathedral and in 1896 was elected a fellow, honoris causa, of the Guild of Church Musicians, London. With Fincham he also advised on organbuilding for many churches in Victoria. In 1874 he was on the first committee of the Victorian Humane Society, and in the 1890s was prominent in the foundation of the Anti-sweating League. He was remembered as possessing 'much personal charm, and many lovable qualities'.
In 1895 Torrance returned to St John's, but in May 1897 his third and last surviving child died, aged 17, and on 12 October he and his wife left for Europe. Instead of returning as planned they settled in Ireland, where he was appointed chaplain to the bishop of Ossory and bishop's vicar choral at St Canice's Cathedral, Kilkenny; in 1900 he was made a canon, and was also cathedral librarian. Aged 72, he died at St Canice's Library on 20 August 1907, three days after his wife. A memorial service for him was held in Trinity College Chapel, Melbourne, on 29 August. There are tablets to his memory at the college and at Holy Trinity, Balaclava.29

Extreme regret will be felt by their many friends at the announcement of the death of Dr Torrance and his wife at Kilkenny, Ireland. Mrs. Torrance died on August 17, and the death of Dr. Torrance occurred two days later.
As a youth, Dr Torrance was educated at Christ Church Cathedral, Dublin, which was then at the zenith of its reputation. At the age of 19 he composed an oratorio, "Abraham," which was produced under his leadership. It was accorded a most favourable reception, and Sterndale Bennett and other musicians urged its composer to prosecute his studies in London. He went, however, to Leipsic, and reaped considerable benefit, his music acquiring greater tone than it had previously possessed. Upon his return to Dublin he took a leading position among musicians, becoming conductor of several musical societies. he took his degree in arts at Trinity College, Dublin. He was at that time organist at St Anne's Church, and during the week in which he passed the examination for the degree of arts he produced a new oratorio, "The Captivity," the words of which were by Oliver Goldsmith. The work involved was phenomenal.
Dr. Torrance's brothers and sisters having come to Australia, he determined to join them. He arrived in Victoria in December, 1869, and became curate at South Yarra, and subsequently at St John's, Latrobe street. he opened Trinity College as a boardinghouse for students at the University, and was at its head until Dr Leeper's appointment as warden. Among the students were Bishop Stretch and Mr Justice Hodges. About this time Dr Torrance married Miss Vaughan, a daughter of Mr S. B. Vaughan, solicitor, of Melbourne. On the death of Mr Barlow, the imcumbent of St John's, Dr Torrance went to Geelong, where he was attached to All Saints' Church. He afterwards became incumbent of Holy Trinity Church, Balaclava, and during his incumbency a handsome new church and parsonage were erected free of debt. Dr Torrance was then unanimously appointed to the incumbency of St John's, Latrobe street, of which church he had formerly been curate. Here he had full scope for his energetic charitable work among the poor. At this time the death of his only daughter occurred, and, finding that he could no longer put his heart into parochial work, he resigned his position, and, with his wife, sailed for Ireland. For the past nine years Dr and Mrs Torrance resided at Kilkenny, where Dr Torrance was vicar-choral and librarian at S Canace's Cathedral and chaplain to the Bishop of Ossory.
Dr Torrace, who was a doctor of music of the Melbounre University, took a prominent part in the movement to complete the musical training of Ernest Hutchinson. Among Dr Torrance's productions were an oratorio, "The Revelation," which was presented in Melbourne; an ode for the opening of the Centennial Exhibition of 1888, which gained second prize; and a number of quartets and madrigals. These, unfortunately have been little heard in Melbourne.6

  • 3 Sep 1877: FATAL ACCIDENT AT NEWTOWN.
    On Saturday morning a fatal accident occurred at the intersection of Pakington street and Retreat road, Newtown, by which the Rev G. W. Torrance lost his only son, Gerrard Vaughan Torrance, three and a-half years of age. There appears to have been no blame attachable to anyone, the particulars as elicited at the inquest showing that the child was sitting alongside the driver of the vehicle, his mother, who was in the cab with him, allowing him to do so at his request, and that, as the cab was turning out of Pakington-street into Retreat road, the child fell out, and the wheel passed over his head, in flicting such fearful injuries that death resulted in a few minutes. None of those in the cab were able to say what caused the little fellow to fall out, but it is supposed that he lost his balance, whilst playing with the driver's whip. There is a level crossing at the intersection of the streets where the accident happened, so that there was no jerk at the time the child fell out. The cabman did not miss the child until the ladies in the back part of the wagonette directed his attention to the fact that the boy was lying on the roadway. Dr. Pincott endeavored to resuscitate the little fellow, but death put an end to his sufferings about ten or fifteen minutes after the accident happened. The following evidence was taken at the inquest held at the Argyle Hotel, at four o'clock in the afternoon, before Dr. Foster Shaw, district coroner, and a jury of twelve. The first witness called was John Kinane, cabdriver, who said that about ten o'clock that morning he started to drive a lady and two children to Newtown. After the elder child had been put in, he was not satisfied with being in the back part of the cab, and wanted to get in the front. The witness took up another lady at Franks' Corner. He told the lady in charge of the little boy that he would put him in front, if she wished. She then said if he (the witness) thought the child would be safe, he might put him there. The witness did so. They went on all right to Newtown Hill. When they got up as far as Mr A. B. White's place, and as they were turning round the corner of Pakington-street and Retreat road, the witness being engaged in steering clear of the lamp-post, the ladies in the back of the cab called out that the child had fallen out. The witness at once pulled up, and went to where the child lay on his right side. He picked him up, and gave him to the ladies. The deceasod was alive when the witness raised him, but he hardly moved. A quantity of blood was flowing from his head, and the ladies then told the witness to drive to Dr. Pincott's.
    Witness did not secure the child on the seat. He gave him the whip. The deceased did not ask for it. When the witness gave it to him he put two knots in the lash so that it might not catch in the wheel. The child tried to strike the horse, but he could not reach it for the dash board. The horse was a very steady one. The body of the child lay in the track of the near wheel.
    Witness believed the deceased was alive when they reached Dr. Pincott's. The horse did not make a sudden start as they were passing round the lamp-post. He was trotting at the rate of about six miles an hour. There is a channel at the intersection of the streets.
    Rebecca Samuel said she was in the cab with the two children, when the little boy, the deceased, expressed a wish to go in the front of the vehicle. Witness asked the cabman if he would be quite safe. He replied in the affirmative. They went on and took up Mrs Torrance in Moorabool-street.
    When turning round the corner of Mr A B. White's property, in Virginia-street, the witness called out to the cabman to stop, as the deceased had fallen out on the road.
    When picked up, the child was quite insensible. They at once took him to Dr. Pincott's. The witness did not think there was any danger in the child sitting in the front of the cab. She did not think the cabman was to blame in any way. They were going at a moderate pace round the corner when the accident happened. The child had the whip in his right hand. The witness saw him try to strike the horse several times, and at the time when he fell out she felt a jerk. The seat on which the deceased sat was so wide that she did not think there was any danger of his falling out.
    Dr. Pincott said that about 11 o'clock on that morning Mrs Torrance brought the deceased child to his house. He was perfectly insensible and breathing weakly. The witness found a lacerated wound over the most prominent part of the right parietal bone, several inches in length. The bone was extensively fractured, and a quantity of brain exuded from the wound. The left ear and left side of the scalp were abrased, and the bones of the vault of the skull were extensively fractured and felt like a quantity of oyster shells. The witness tried every means to resuscitate the deceased, but he died in a few minutes. The cause of death, was fracture of the skull and laceration of the substance of the brain.
    The jury returned a verdict of "Accidental death."7

  • 4 Oct 1913: The announcement of the sudden death of Mr. George Lupton, the well-known elocutionist, has been received with expressions of great regret by hundreds of his old pupils. For nearly 40 years Mr. Lupton has been teaching elocution in Victorian public and private schools. His tall, commanding figure and his beautiful diction were characteristics which made him admired wherever he was known. So strong a hold had Mr. Lupton on the affections of his pupils that a few years ago they organised a benefit to him, and the large crowd which attended the concert in the Town Hall testified to his popularity.6

    At 6 a.m. today the usual queue of 200 shift-workers going to or returning from work was filing past the cigarette kiosk at the main entrance to Flinders Street station while —
    Across the street at the corner of Swanston Street and Batman Avenue, Senior-Constable Roy H. Warne and Constable Brian Hogg, of the wireless patrol, were picking up 3300 English and Australian cigarettes in loose packets of 10 and 20.
    Senior-Constable Warne's attention was attracted to the cigarettes when he saw several packets on the footpath in Batman Avenue.
    Looking over the steel, spike-studded wall, he saw many more packets oh the roof of a nearby platform and on the railway line below. Two-thirds of the cigarettes were English, and the rest Australian.
    Police think the cigarettes were stolen, but have been unable to trace the owner. They believe the thief, becoming frightened, threw the cigarettes on the roof and dropped several packets on the footpath in his hurry to get rid of them.
    CAFE ROBBED
    Police later found that a nearby cafe had been robbed. Thieves entered after removing a sheet of roofing iron and tearing a hole in the plasterboard ceiling. Alongside the hole police found 1500 more cigarettes.
    The recovered cigarettes, worth about £150, belonged to Mr George Gillam, of Beaconsfield, the owner of the cafe. About £5 in cash was missing.14

The cortège will leave at half-past 11, and will proceed to Christ Church, Acland-street. After a portion of the service for the burial of the dead has been read, the remains will be conducted to the St. Kilda Cemetery.

  • 16 Feb 1889: DEATH OF MR. JOHN WILKS. In the death of Mr. John Wilks, solicitor, a well-known and much esteemed St. Kilda resident, another old identity of the district, and one who has rendered valuable service to the community, has been removed. Mr. Wilks, who died at his residence, "Gunnesbury," Burnett-street, on Sunday, was identified with the local government of the borough of St. Kilda for many years, having been a member of the council over a lengthened period. In 1874, 1875, and 1876, the deceased gentleman occupied the position of mayor, and was chairman of the St. Kilda bench. Subsequently Mr. Wilks contested the Lonsdale Ward election for the Melbourne city council and was sucessful. He continued to represent the Lonsdale Ward with credit to himself and to the entire satisfaction of his constituents up to the time of his death. The funeral took place on Tuesday morning and was largely attended by representative men and numerous friends.11

    A man who was alleged to have attempted to break into the home of Mrs Rhoda Gillett, Deakin st, St Kilda, on Saturday was detained by 2 women neighbours until a police patrol car arrived.
    The women told police they saw a man at the front of the house and then go to the rear. When he returned to the front the man, they allege, smashed a window with a stone, and the women then inter- cepted him.
    Later a labourer, 38, of no fixed address, was charged with house breaking with intent to steal.15

Ltd., coal merchants, and steam ship owners, of Melbourne, for 62 years, and retired twelve months ago from the position of manager. He was a director of Victorian Lighterage Co., and held a similar position in the Twentieth Century Building and Investment Society. Keenly interested in racing, Mr Gillett was the oldest member of Williamstown Racing Club, not only in age, but in length of association with the club. He leaves a widow and two sons. The burial took place on Friday at Williamstown Cemetery, and the funeral was attended by representatives of Melbourne shipping firms. J. Paterson and Co. was represented by Capt. Caines and Mr L. M. Masterton, Melbourne S.S. Co. by Mr Burnet (manager), Mr Les. Reed (towage manager), and Mr Fred Gough (Hobson's Bay Dock Co.)7

  • 9 Feb 1933: I am sorry to say that our esteemed resident, Mr. E. Turner, is having rather a bad time of it; some time ago he ran a nail into his foot, and septic poisoning developed. The services of Dr. Langmore were called on, and now under his care, and the attention of Nurse O’Donnell, Mr. Turner is slowly improving, but if will be some time before he is able to get about again.15
  • 23 Feb 1933: I am sorry to have to report that Mr. E. Turner, who had been suffering from septic poisoning, has had a relapse, and now he is an inmate of '“Epworth” Private Hospital, in Richmond, where he will have to remain for some time.16
