  • 22 Mar 1933: BETTING CHARGES.
    William Graham Balharrie, 32, seaman, was charged before Mr. MacDougal, S.M., at the Central Police Court yesterday, with having used a shop at 103 Dolphin-street, Coogee, on March 11, for the purpose of betting. Cyril George Shortus Lavender, 37, salesman, was charged, as occupier of the premises, with having knowingly permitted them to be used for betting. Both defendants pleaded not guilty. Balharrie stated that a paper found on him, with certain figures on it, related to problems in navigation, and that names written on a pad were those of prospective guests at a farewell party which was to be given to Lavender. The magistrate described Balharrie's story as fantastic, and fined each of the defendants £5 with the alternative of 10 days' imprisonment with hard labour.11
  • 14 Jan 1950: COLOUR SCHEME WAS FATAL ?
    MELBOURNE, January, 13. The 11,000 ton liner, Niew Holland, was a cable length out- side the deep dredge channel when she and a fishing launch collided on December 18, the pilot told a Marine Court of Inquiry today. This was normal practice.
    Other than deep draught vessels, only five per cent of ships used the channel.
    Mr A. H. Mann, for the Marine Board, said that the launch was painted green, or a greenish blue, with a white cabin top.
    It might have been difficult to see in the choppy sea.
    Both the master, Captain Johannes Willem Zuyderhoudt and the Port Phillip pilot in charge, Captain William Graham Balharrie, said they could offer no explanation, apart from tins possible camouflage, for their failing to see the launch.
    They had noticed several other small boats during their trw from Port Melbourne.
    Two men lost their lives in the collision: They were David Speechley, 74, on holiday from Sydney, and Ray Comben, 50, of Victoria Street, Williamstown.
    The court adjourned until Monday. Johannes Willem Zuyderhoudt12

  • 14 Jun 1886: The death is announced this morning of Mr Sydney W Smith, who has been for nearly 30 years connected, in the capacity of surveyor with various suburban municipalities. He had latterly been surveyor to the St Kilda Borough Council, and formerly occupied a similar position under the South Melbourne City Council, and also in the Shire of Caulfield, while he had been temporarily engaged under the Port Melbourne and Flemington and Essendon Councils. The deceased was one of the earliest members of the Victorian Institute of Surveyors, and was a member of the council of the Victorian Engineers' Association. He was well known among the municipal bodies. The funeral is advertised to leave the late residence of the deceased, at St. Kilda, this afternoon.12
  • 19 Jun 1886: THE LATE MR. SYDNEY W. SMITH, C.E.
    "Relentless death has clos'd the mortal scene, And stopp'd the vigorous wheels of life's machine."
    Another old colonist has passed away. Mr. Sydney W. Smith, C.E. having died, at the age of 60, on Sunday, at his residence, Princes-street, St. Kilda, after a lingering illness of several months' duration. The deceased was the son of Lieut. John Smith, R.N. of Godolming, Surrey, England.
    He arrived in Sydney in 1852, and shortly afterwards came to Melbourne, where he commenced the practice of his profession as architect and surveyor. Shortly after the formation of St. Kilda, into a municipality, Mr. Smith was appointed municipal surveyor, which position he occupied for about 15 years. He also filled the office of consulting surveyor to the town (now city) of South Melbourne for 21 years, which office he relinquished about a year ago. He was also surveyor to the Shire of Caulfield for a period extending over 23 years. He was likewise consulting engineer to one or two other municipalities, as well as engineer to the trustees of the St. Kilda cemetery. In addition to filling these various municipal offices, the late Mr. Smith carried on an extensive private practice. Few men had a more practical knowledge of local Government than the deceased gentleman. Mr. Smith was married in 1859, and leaves a widow and nine children, some of them being grown up. His eldest son is a solicitor. The deceased was much esteemed by members of his own profession and by all those who enjoyed the privilege of his friendship. The remains of the deceased gentleman were interred in the St. Kilda cemetery on Monday, and his funeral was attended by a large number of friends, including several of the oldest councillors representing the various municipalities.
    Mr. Smith was married to Miss Carter, daughter, of the Rev. Mr. Carter (Episcopalian minister), who still lives at Kew. Mr. Carter conducted the funeral service at the house and the Revs. J. Stanley Low, J. H. Gregory, and Reynold Stephen officiated at the grave. The first chairman of the St. Kilda municipality (Benjamin Cowderoy) was present, and the councils of South Melbourne, Prahran, St. Kilda, and Caulfield were well represented.13

    Deep regret will be felt at the announcement of the death of Mr Sydney William Smith a member of the firm of Sydney Smith Ogg and Serpell architects which occurred last night at his home in Erskine street Malvern. The firm of Sydney Smith Ogg and Serpell was established in 1852 by Mr Smiths father who was the first engineer of the St Kilda Road Board. Upon the death of his father in 1886 Mr Sydney Smith carried on the business and was joined in partnership in 1901 by Mr C A Ogg who died last year. Mr G E Serpell joined the firm in 1921 . Ever since its establishment the firm has taken an important part in the architectural progress of Melbourne many notable buildings having been designed by it at various times. They include the new Port Authority building in Market street which was awarded the Royal Victorian Institute of Architects Victorian Street Architecture medal for 1933 Harley House Collins Street; the Victoria Buildings Collins street, the offices of the Colonial Mutual Insurance Co Collins street and the C M Read Stores Chapel street Prahran. Other buildings designed by the firm include those of John Danks and Son in Bourke street and the Union Steamship Co William street and several branch offices of the State Savings Bank the Oriental and City Club Hotels Collins Street and the old London Inn Market street. The firm has also designed many station homes in the Western district and several breweries.
    Mr Smith was a member of the Australian and Yorick Clubs and of the Royal Melbourne Golf Club. He was honorary architect to the Melbourne Orphanage and the Melbourne Atheneum. For his services in the conservation of the old Atheneum Hall into the present theatre he was made an honorary life member of the Atheneum. Mr Smith was also a director of the Royal Humane Society of Australasia was a member of the Armadale Bowling Club he was an enthusiastic bowler and he was a member of the clubs team which won the pennant competition for several years. He was a member also of the team which won the rink champion ship of Australia at Brisbane. In 1914 Mr Smith was also a first class billiard player.
    He won the Victoria Club tournament wide under the name of 'Toorak'. He was the first secretary to the St Kilda Football Club.
    Mr Smith was a widower. He leaves one daughter Mrs Harold Cowles.9

  • 29 Jun 1938: OBITUARY - The Rev. Godfrey Smith. The death occurred at a private hospital in Kew yesterday of the Rev. Godfrey Hull Smith after a brief illness. Mr. Smith, who was aged 69 years, was born at St. Kilda. He was educated at Scotch College and the Melbourne University, and was ordained at St. Paul's Cathedral. He was the third son of the late Mr. Sydney William Smith, surveyor and engineer, of St. Kilda, who took an active part in planning the municipality.
    Mr. Smith, who was a brother of the late Mr. H. H. Smith, M.L.C., was vicar at Broken Hill, Sale, Colac, and Ivanhoe. He has left a widow, a son, and two daughters.
    A service will be conducted at the Church of St. Dunstan, Wattle Valley road, Camberwell, at 3.15 p.m., to-day, by the Rev. J. C. Drought, and the funeral, which will be private, will leave the church for the Box Hill Cemetery.
    The arrangements will be mode by A. A. Sleight Pty. Ltd.7

  • 25 Jan 1877: Amongst the many appliances to be introduced into the new Victoria Club, in Collins-street, for the convenience of members, will be on improved system of electric communication between the various rooms and the manager's office. For this purpose an electric bell indicator, the largest ever made in the colony, has been manufactured by Messrs Hyde and Krantzcke, bellhangers, Little Collins-street west. It is constructed on the Manchester movement principle, possesses the most recent improvements, and does away with the necessity for a multiplicity of bells, only one bell being required. Each room is connected with the bell and indicator by means of separate wires, and on the face of the indicator there are 48 discs with numbers corresponding to those of the various rooms. Upon a button or key being touched in any of the apartments the bell rings, and a red spot appears in the disc on the indicator corresponding to the room where attendance is required. The keys in all the rooms may be operated on with the desired effect at the same moment. The red discs are then removed from sight and contact restored by pressing a knob, which acts on a lever frame inside the case. Charles Frederick Krantzcke26

    The Victoria Club, Collins street, was opened yesterday by a luncheon, given in the large dining hall. About 300 gentlemen were present. The company included a number of members of the Legislature and the City Council Mr Paterson, the mayor of Melbourne, was in the chair. An excellent re past was prepared by Mr Chambers the club chef. A cone of ice which weighed 49lb. was one of the novel features of a well-dressed table.

  • 26 Jul 1912: THE LATE Mrs. T. C. HYDE.
    The death on Monday morning, July 22, of Mrs. Rebecca Hyde, wife of Mr. Thomas C. Hyde, of Hopetoun parade, Box Hill, has removed another highly respected resident of the district and a colonist for nearly 40 years. Mrs. Hyde, who had reached the ripe old age of 70 years, had enjoyed comparatively good health until Wednesday of last week, when she was confined to her bed with a severe attack of influenza, so short an illness, came as a severe shock to her family and friends, and a very large number of acquaintances here and elsewhere were overcome by grief. The funeral took place on Wednesday afternoon, when the remains were interred in the Box Hill cemetery.
    The Rev. B. A. Taylor officiated at the graveside, and numerous floral tributes testified to the high esteem in which the deceased lady was held. The late Mrs. Hyde was born at Kensington, London in 1841, and on October 27, 1862 she was married to Mr. Thomas C. Hyde at Hammersmith. Thirteen years later Mr. and Mrs. Hyde came to Victoria, Mr. Hyde engaging in his business as an electrician in Richmond, where the family also resided, for 16 years. Subsequently they removed to Canterbury, Armadale and Coburg, and finally, nine years ago, they took up their residence at Hopetoun parade, Box Hill, with Mrs. Hyde's sister, Mrs. Bishop, widow of the late Edward Bishop (who was formerly proprietor of the Box Hill "Reporter"). Mr. Hyde continued his well known business as an electrician in the city until November last, when he resigned its management to one of his three sons, who with him are left to mourn the irreparable loss of an exemplary wife and mother. The eldest son is a prominent member of the Melbourne "Herald" literary staff, and the third is also engaged in the electrical business. The late Mrs. Hyde, though not an active worker, was a prominent member of the Box Hill Methodist church, and her loss in religious and charitable circles locally will be severely felt.2
