Village Bell* | Dec 1984 | BEACONSFIELD UPPER CITIZEN OF THE YEAR - 1984 This years award, which must have been one of the best kept secrets of all time, went to Dr. Charles Wilson. He and his wife Yvonne 'retired' here about seven years ago. Charles enthusiastically supported many community activities. He eventually started what he hoped would be a small practice. During this time his care and compassion has endeared him to all who know him. It is only from those who have benefitted from his kindness that we are made aware of the time and effort expended beyond the call of duty. A large number of people welcome the opportunity to express their appreciation by supporting this award.9 |
Village Bell* | Apr 1985 | DR. WILSON SELLS PRACTICE "Has he really retired this time?" must be the query on many people's lips when they read that Dr. Charles Wilson sold his practice to Dr. Sally McDonald as from March 1. "No, not really" is probably the answer. For his love of helping others will surely keep him in touch with the town's medical problems for some time. To start with, after a lengthy holiday, he will take over the practice again while Dr. McDonald goes on her honeymoon, and later assist her when required. Dr. McDonald is marrying Doug Gould, grandson of local resident Keith Ballantyne. Dr. McDonald lives in Berwick and she and her husband will continue to do so after their marriage. She will continue to run the medical practice at Wildfell during the day until she finds a location closer to the village. After-hours telephone calls go to her home. Surgery hours are - weekdays 8.00 a.m. to 12 noon, 2.30 p.m. to 6.00 p.m. Saturday 8.00 a.m. to 12 noon Sunday 9.30 a.m. to 10.30 a.m. Dr. John Barrell from Cranbourne runs the surgery one day a week. Dr. Barrell has had extensive experience overseas and is currently studying anaesthetics at Dandenong Hospital. Dr. Wilson has practiced for 41 years, and established his high reputation in a range of medical fields. He and his wife, Yvonne, moved to Upper Beaconsfield seven years ago, in theory for Dr. Wilson to retire. However once at Wildfell he was soon back in the fray of attending the locals' health problems. Popular demand for his caring ways quickly had him running his practice seven days a week, on call 24 hours a day. Many a patient can gratefully remember his willing response to a frantic "after-hours" call, such as when a husband fell and gashed himself in the shower at about 11 pm, or another woke up with a dislocated shoulder at 1 am. After taking a dog-bitten child to Dr. Wilson at about 7 pm while his wife took her dog on its last trip to the vet, how many fathers can tell of a doctor who sent him home with a stitched-up child plus a restorative bottle of wine? Having been burnt out in the Ash Wednesday fires, and survived by sitting in the swimming pool for three hours, Dr. and Mrs. Wilson quickly established themselves in a cottage at Fassifern where Dr. Wilson ran his surgery from a mobile unit. His efforts at helping the townspeople back on their feet are well known and were aptly acknowledged last November when he was made Citizen of the Year. Not only is Mrs. Wilson the most supportive wife, she is also Dr. Yvonne Russell, anaesthetist. Both she and Charles have a variety of interests other than medical which they are looking forward to pursuing. May they both enjoy a fulfilling "retirement".10 |

Village Bell* | Mar 2005 | Yvonne Kerr Wilson. 1924-2004 Yvonne Kerr Wilson was born in Newcastle on Tyne in 1924. Her father was a Harley Street specialist, and her mother a qualified MD. It was still wartime when Yvonne decided to follow in her parent's footsteps and study medicine and to specialise in anaesthesia. She proved to be a highly talented and competent anaesthetist, adding to her skills with special training in the technique of epidural blocks, which was just coming into common use in England and was practically unknown in Australia. Always ready for an adventure, Yvonne arrived in Melbourne in 1957, where she was greeted with open arms. In those days, anaesthetists of Yvonne's qualifications and experience were very rare in Melbourne. Not only was she appointed to the Royal Melbourne Hospital, but within a few months had been appointed to the Queen Victoria Hospital and the Footscray Hospital. Yvonne was soon well established in the Melbourne medical fraternity and began to develop her own private practice. It was at this time she met and married Charles Wilson, a local General Practitioner, a widower with three teenage children. The role of stepmother is difficult, but, needless to say, Yvonne soon won their respect, their admiration and their love. She in turn loved, admired and supported them. In 1969, Charles and Yvonne moved to Dandenong where Yvonne worked at the Dandenong Hospital. In 1977 they "retired" to Upper Beaconsfield It was at this time that she effectively retired from medicine. In contrast to her ladylike gentility, Yvonne enjoyed wandering about the countryside in a caravan. She had a great love of Australia and the outback. She was a very skilled at sewing and produced a number of superb tapestries every year. Yvonne was a highly respected senior medical specialist. She was a loving companion, a loved and cherished parent, and a warm and caring friend. She is greatly missed by all who knew her.9 |

Village Bell* | Oct 1995 | CHARLES WILLIAM RAYNOR DART “DARTIE” 18.2.1902- 15.9.1995 Dartie lived in Upper Beaconsfield from 1961 until 1977, and was very a very active and loved member of our community. He was a staunch member of St. John’s Anglican Church, and was for some years organist and also a vestryman. Dartie was born in Nelson, New Zealand. His father was an archdeacon and his mother a gentle loving family person. Having completed his tertiary education in New Zealand, he thought he might make the Church his career. With this in mind he travelled to England and studied at Lincoln College. He soon decided that this was not to be his vocation. To expand his general knowledge he went to France, and lived and worked there for some time, including a stint as a waiter. Returning to New Zealand via Australia, a friend advised him to visit Dr. James Darling at Geelong Grammar School. Dartie thought he would like to teach at the school and applied for a job for one year. Darling wrote back saying “Take it for two years and the job is yours”. Dartie proved to be an exceptional teacher, with high principles, a wonderful sense of humour and an ability to inspire his pupils. He was a superb raconteur, with an enormous supply of amusing stories, to the delight of his students. He became housemaster of Manifold House and was loved and respected by generations of schoolboys. His teaching role was broken in 1941, when he joined the Royal Australian Navy. He rapidly rose to the rank of Lieutenant, and was given work in the special service, often behind the lines with the Americans. After the War he returned to his teaching and married his loved wife Helen, and they were blessed with a daughter, Alison. In 1961 the family moved to Upper Beaconsfield. Soon after this, Dartie was persuaded to continue his teaching at St. Margaret’s in Berwick, where he worked for the next ten years. He loved his garden and had several New Zealand natives in it. He enjoyed propagating plants, especially oaks which he greatly admired. Several local Gallipoli oaks were planted by Dartie. In 1977 it was decided that they should move to Berwick. A few years later Dartie had a stroke which left him severely incapacitated. Helen was able to care for Dartie at home for some time but eventually this became impractical and he was admitted to St. Anne’s Nursing Home where he spent the last ten years of his life.8 |
