  • 28 Jul 1888: THE FEDERAL COFFEE PALACE.
    A banquet was given yesterday at the Federal Coffee Palace to celebrate the opening of the establishment. Mr. John Nimmo presided, and he was supported by the Mayor of Melbourne and Messrs. L. L. Smith, E. L. Zox, J. Mirams, and J. Laurens, M. L. A's. There were about 120 guests present including a number of ladies. After an excellent menu had been gone through, the usual loyal toasts were drunk. Mr. Nimmo responded to the toast of "The Ministry" and Mr L. L. Smith to that of "The Parliament."
    Mr. L. L. Smith spoke in eulogistic terms of the way in which the building had been completed and furnished. It was superior, in his opinion, to anything of the kind in Europe or America, not excepting the "Palace" at San Francisco. Mr. E. L. Zox responded for "The Palace and Kindred Institutions," and Mr. J. Mirams, speaking in the same connection, said that his predictions three years ago as to the increasing value of sites in the western portion of the city had been more than fulfilled by the result. The land upon which the palace stood had trebled in value during the last three years. The land was now worth £150,000, and with the building and furniture, which might be valued at £100,000, gave the shareholders ample security for their money. He was glad that they had secured the services of such a capable manager as Mr. George Cohen. The coffee palace has been furnished by Messrs. W. H. Rocke and Co., who have interpreted their carte blanche in a spirit of elegant taste and luxurious completeness. Five floors have already been furnished and will accommodate 350 guests. The building will be open to the public on Monday, and it is expected that it will be completed within six weeks. Louis Lawrence Smith16

  • 20 Mar 1947: UPWEY CONVENTION TO FIND NEW SITE
    Increasing population and the urgent need for substantial areas for physical education in a community where there were two schools, compelled the Education Department to acquire the area of land used for the last 16 years by the Upwey convention, Mr Field, Minister for Education, told members of a protest deputation yesterday.
    The convention represented a cross section of the organic unity in Protestant churches. Rev H. M. Arrowsmith, vicar of St Johns' C of E, Toorak, said, and had played an important part in restoring a return to faith, which was essential when there were so many disturbing signs of paganism.
    Mr Field said that the department's plan the community had to be considered, as it catered for education throughout the year, and as the convention was of two weeks' duration only, he hoped suitable surroundings in the locality could be found.19
  • 29 Dec 1947: OBITUARY - MR HERVEY P. SMITH
    Hervey Perceval Smith, managing director of the Keswick Book Depot Pty Ltd, of 315 Collins st, city, and a director of the Star Bowkett Building Society, died on Saturday at a private hospital in Surrey Hills.
    He had been attending the Upwey inter-denominational religious convention, which he founded 30 years ago, and of which he was secretary.
    Mr Smith took a great interest in missionary activities and was on many mission councils. For 30 years he was manager of the Federal Coffee Palace, a position which he resigned in 1923 when the directorate obtained a liquor licence. His wife survives him.
    The funeral will take place on Tuesday at the Box Hill Cemetery, leaving his residence, 67 Percy st, Mitcham, at 2.30pm.20

  • 23 Dec 1949: 3000 Expected At Upwey Convention
    ABOUT 3000 persons are expected at the annual Upwey Convention to be held for the last time on the convention-ground in Collier Avenue, Upwey, from December 24 to January 2.
    The site has now been acquired for school extensions. The convention council recently bought a site on the old golf links at Belgrave Heights. Future conventions will be held there. The convention is a counterpart of the famous Keswick convention held every year in the beautiful Lakes district of Cumberland, England.
    It was founded in 1918 by the late Mr H. B. Smith, hon. secretary for 30 years. At first, annual Bible readings were attended by about 100 persons in the little Union church at Upwey. These were conducted by Rev. C. H. Nash first principle of Melbourne Bible Institute.
    The attendance grew rapidly until eventually the council bought the present site of 71 acres, and erected a permanent auditorium to seat 1450. Members of all Protestant denominations attend these conventions. The primary purpose is to give Scriptural teachings.
    On the two Sundays the local Union Church unites with the convention. The Sunday evening meetings are evangelistic.
    INFLUENCE A long list of speakers includes some from overseas and inter-State. A new song leader and speaker this year will be Rev. E. H. Watson, of Aberdeen Street, Baptist Church, Geelong.
    The convention has had a very marked influence on the development of this district. The council rents houses, paying as much as £800 a year in rents.
    The house parties are for visitors who are not accommodated in the convention camps or at guest houses.
    There will be six large camps—three on the convention grounds, and the others on private property. One of the features of the convention will be a picnic on the future convention site, on Thursday, December 29. There will also be a children's hour daily with an adventure serial in technicolor, quiz shows, singing and music.
    Rev. E. H. Watson will preach on Sunday evening.22

    Advice has been received from Motihari (India) that the Rev. J. H. Coombe, Mrs. Coombe, and Miss V. A. Smith, of Melbourne, and Miss D. Dillon, of Adelaide, who were working in conjunction with the Australian Nepalese Mission at Ghorasahan, on the border of Nepal, are safe.
    The mission buildings have been damaged by the earthquake.11

    Miss Smith, who with three other missioners carries on work in Nepal, gave an interesting talk on her experiences. After a hearty vote of thanks was accorded the speaker, a collection was taken up for the Nepalese Mission's fund. The Methodist school hall at Guildford has been made available for a lantern lecture by Miss Smith on Friday night.12

    Visiting Kataomba at this time isa Miss Alice Smith, who for the past eighteen years has been laboring as a missionary in northern India. Miss Smith is connected with the Australian Nepalese Mission whose first workers went out from Australia over twenty years ago to gain access with the Christian Gospel to the peoples of the closed land of Nepal. While the Nepalese Government still prohibits entrance to the foreigner across the frontier, this mission is established close to its border, where the people may be touched as they pass to and fro from the frontier railway. In one alone some 4,000 Nepalese called at the Mission Dispensary, where they not only received treatment of their ailments, but were told of Him, Who alone can heal their souls diseases. There are over five millions of these fine, brave people, known as the Ghurkas, whose fighting propensities have made them so notable in serving the British Empire in its international wars.
    The Nepalese are intensely religious; innumerable shrines border upon tbe roadways. Yet the darkness and superstition of heathendom still bind these people to practises of cruelty and demon worship. Many of the Nepalese people are longing to know the spiritual liberty that the Lord Jesus Christ alone is able to bring. This evening (Tuesday) in the Katoomba Methodist Church Hall, Miss Alice Smith will he telling the interesting story of work among the people of the border line, illustrated with a number of lantern slides. Everyone is invited to attend. There is no charge for admission.13

  • 8 Sep 1886: BERWICK POLICE COURT, FRIDAY, September 3, 1886. Before Messrs. Wilson and Elmes, J.'sP. Truant Inspector v. William Piggott; not sending his children to school the required number of days. Two offences.-Fined 5s, in each case.23
  • 7 Oct 1901: Mr. William Piggott, an old resident of Fremantle, aged 64 years, while out riding on Saturday, was thrown from his horse, and sustained a fractured skull. He died soon after reaching the hospital.24
  • 12 Oct 1901: A FREMANTLE FATALITY
    An inquest regarding the death of William Piggott took place in the Coroner's Court, at Fremantle, before Mr W. T. John, J.P., Acting Coroner. Evidence was given to the effect that about 12 o'olock on October 4 the deceased, who was mounted on a quiet horse, and in a perfectly sober condition, bade goodnight to a friend in South Terrace at the Port; and galloped off in the direction of his own home. A few minutes later a young man, named Robert Matheson, while lying in bed at a house in South Terrace, heard a horse, galloping furiously past, and almost at the same time he heard a noise, as if the horse had stumbled. This was followed by a dull heavy thud on the ground. Matheson in his shirt and trousers rushed out to see what had happened, and he found the deceased lying unconsciouos in the roadway. He (Matheson) sent for the police, and the latter took the deceased to the public hospital, where he died on Saturday evening. Medical testimony was given to show that the cause of death was fracture of the skull and laceration of the brain. The jury returned a verdict in accordance with the medical testimony, but added that there was no direct evidence to show how the injuries had been caused.25

His spirit has fled, and his sufferings are o'er, At the hearth of our home he will join us no more; Though his loss we do mourn, yet we hope he's above Waiting for those whom on earth he did love. -Inserted by his loving son and daughter, H.
