He was with the Mechanic Staff SGT (Light Motor Set Wireless Troop) when he enlisted. His unit embarked from Sydney on 19 Dec 1917 on board HMAT 38 Ulysses. He returned to Australia on 27 Dec 1919.1

  • 3 Oct 1941: SEQUEL TO EX-MINISTER'S ROMANCE. Forged Marriage Certificate Alleged
    Allegations that a former Congregational minister, after having allegedly forged a marriage certificate had been threatened with criminal proceedings if he did not join the armed forces or leave Australia were made at the City Court yesterday
    James Leishman, 24, Government employee, of Belgrave st., East Malvern, was charged with having about February 3, 1941, forged a writing purporting to be a marriage certificate.
    Leishman who pleaded not guilty and reserved his defence, was committed for trial at the Supreme Court on October 20. Bail was fixed at £100.
    Betty Rosalie Staurenghi, Downshire rd, Elsternwick, said she became friendly with Leishman, who was then minister of Elsternwick Congregational church, about June or July, 1940 As she was under 21 her father would not agree to their being married. When Leishman left the Congregational Church in November 1940, her parents violently objected to marriage. Their friendship was broken off but later resumed. About the end of January Leishman brought marriage certificate, which she signed.
    Mr A. J. B. Aird (legal assistant to the Police Department) said the police had given Betty Staurenghi an indemnity.
    Betty Staurenghi said that a flat was taken at St Kilda. There had been no ceremony, but she regarded the certificate as binding to some extent. At her initiative as much as Leishman's she telephoned her father and told him they had been married.
    Mr Mohr, PM.—You were a very willing accomplice.
    Mr R. H. Dunn (for Leishman).—Did you quarrel with Leishman?
    Witness.—We had a row and he shut the door and said, "You are out." I told my father that night.
    At Mr Dunn's request witness read this statement which she said she had signed after Leishman had dictated it.
    5th August 1941
    I hereby bear witness that Leslie Staurenghi of Melbourne, in collaboration with the Rev Walter Albiston, of Melbourne, did in my hearing make the following statement "—
    "That they intend to make an ultimatum and threat to one James Leishman, also of Melbourne, to wit, that if the said James Leishman did not (a) accept fare from Australia to a foreign country, said fare to be paid or (b) join His Majesty s Forces, the said James Leishman would be prosecuted."
    Also the above Leslie Staurenghi and Walter Albiston have from time to time made inquiries by cable letter and other means to personal friends and others of the said James Leishman in the United Kingdom the said inquiries being set on with a view to his detriment and disparagement both in the United Kingdom and Australia and to force him to comply with the above ultimatum.
    "I STILL CARE FOR HIM"
    Witness said Leslie Staurenghi was her father. The statement she had read was partly true.
    Mr Aird.—Are you still friendly with Leishman?
    Witness.—I suppose I still care for him. I could not deny that.
    Leslie Martin Staurenghi, manager, of Downshire rd, Elsternwick, said his daughter would be 21 this month. At the beginning of April she gave him the certificate which he thought was genuine and he gave it to the Rev Walter Albiston.
    Sen-Det. H. V. Clugston said that on September 26 at Russell st., Leishman made a statement in which he said that Betty Staurenghi had made various suggestions to him, including one that a friend of hers should marry them and the marriage not be registered and another that a mock ceremony should be performed by a woman minister. He told her this was ridiculous. Later she suggested filling in a blank marriage certificate which was accidentally in his possession after he had severed his connection with the Congregational Church Elsternwick. She suggested showing it to anyone who asked for their marriage certificate.
    Later he filled in the certificate making many mistakes so that it would not be taken for a forgery. Staurenghi signed the witnesses signatures with different pens, besides signing her own name. The certificate was placed in a sealed envelope in a wardrobe at the flat. After about 6 weeks there was a disagreement and Staurenghi said, "Go and look in the wardrobe. I have removed the paper and I have it in a safe place, in Sennitt's safe. Unless you show more affection towards me it will turn the paper over to the police and tell them that you were responsible." Upon this he immediately ordered her out of the flat.
    Mr Aird.—Did any person in court report this matter.
    Clugston.—No. Information came to me in the course of another inquiry.18
  • 20 Nov 1941: FORGERY OF MARRIAGE PAPERS ALLEGED
    A tall, dark and attractive 21-year-old girl, Miss Betty Rosalie Staurenghi, of Downshire Road, Elsternwick, told a jury in the Criminal Court today that although she had signed what purported to be a certificate of marriage with an ex-Congregational Church minister, she believed now she was only married to him in "an irregular way."
    Miss Staurenghi was giving evidence against James Leishman, 24, of Belgrave Road, East Malvern, now a Government employe, who had pleaded not guilty before Mr Justice Gavan Duffy in a charge of having, on or about February 3 this year, with intent to defraud, forged what purported to be a marriage certificate.
    The Senior Crown Prosecutor (Mr C. H. Book, K.C.) told of a romance between Miss Staurenghi and Leishman which began when Leishman was in charge of a Congregational Church at Elsternwick and of how, before leaving his position with the church, he proposed marriage to her.
    Her father, however, refused his consent, as she was then under age, but the acquaintanceship was resumed again in December last year, when Leishman renewed his marriage suggestions. He gave Miss Staurenghi some marriage forms which required her own signature and her father's signature of consent.
    "Man And Wife"
    After her father had again declined to sign, Leishman suggested they should live together in a flat as man and wife, and that he would provide a marriage certificate.
    When they took the flat, early in February, he produced filled-in marriage document which purported to contain the necessary signatures and appeared to represent that they had been married at a Presbyterian Church in Springvale in January. They then lived together for some time.
    In his alleged statement to the police Leishman had said the marriage certificate was Miss Staurenghi's idea.
    Father's Refusal
    Miss Staurenghi, on oath, said that when her father first refused to consent to her marriage with Leishman, their relationship was discontinued until December last year, when her father again refused to sign papers given her by Leishman.
    Leishman made several other suggestions, one of which was that she would ask a woman minister friend of hers to marry them and retain the registration papers until she turned 21, in October this year.
    Subsequently Leishman obtained a marriage paper, which, she alleged, he contained the necessary signatures and particulars. He told her they would not go through any actual marriage ceremony. She believed it was irregular, but that she was married as the papers were to be forwarded to the Registrar.
    Cruelty Alleged
    The lived together for a while and then parted. She handed the certificate to her father when she found out the marriage was not registered.
    Cross-examined by Mr J. M. Cullity (for Leishman), Miss Staurenghi said she took it for granted that their marriage would be registered. She suspected it had not been registered and should have questioned Leishman further about it, but did not. She did not say much to him, but knew things could not go on as he had cruel to her. Eventually, she alleged, he "turned her out" about April after trying to choke her.
    "To Protect Girl"
    Declaring that he was innocent of the offence, Leishman, in a statement from the dock, said it was entirely at Miss Staurenghi's suggestion that he had filled in the paper.
    He had wished to protect her from any embarrassment or, in other words, to save her face.
    Embarrassment would certainly have been the result if there had been no certificate. The certificate was not produced by him with any intent whatsoever to injure, deceive or defraud anybody.
    "I did not wish to subject Miss Staurenghi to anything which would approximate to trouble, disrepute or scandal," Leishman went on. "It would be impossible for a man in my position, or in the position I then held, to have jeopardised the happiness of a girl with whom he was supposed to have been in love.
    "It is therefore inconceivable that I would have produced that paper with the intention of doing her or hers any harm. When I filled in the paper I had absolutely no idea I was committing any offence or breaking any law, as portions of it were purposely misspelt, and made illegible."
    The trial is unfinished. Mr Cullity was instructed by Mr R. H. Dunn.19
  • 25 Nov 1941: Former Minister Sentenced
    A sentence of six months' imprisonment was imposed by Mr. Justice Gavan Duffy, in the Criminal Court yesterday, on James Leishman, 24 years, of Belgrave-road, East Malvern, formerly a minister of religion, who on Friday last was found guilty of having forged, with intent to defraud, what purported to be a marriage certificate.
    His Honor, in passing sentence, said the girl with whom Leishman had been living, and whom the certificate stated to be his wife, had told a story which showed a very cruel disposition on his part. However, after hearing her in the witness box he (his Honor) was not prepared to take that into account in punishing accused, and was not proceeding on the assumption that the girl's story was true. Nevertheless, to prepare a false marriage certificate was a very serious offence against the good order of the country, and it had an added seriousness coming from a man who was a clergyman.20
  • 5 Dec 1941: EX-MINISTER'S APPLICATION
    An application by James Leishman, 24, former minister of a Congregational Church at Elsternwick for leave to appeal against a recent conviction for forging a document which purpoted to be a marriage certificate was dismissed by the Court of Criminal Appeal yesterday.
    Leishman was found guilty by a jury in the Criminal Court on November 20 and sentenced to 6 months' imprisonment with hard labour.
    Mr J Cullity (instructed by Mr R H Dunn) appeared for Leishman. The application was opposed by Mr. C H Book, KC, Crown prosecutor.21

  • 21 Jun 1951: 'Chaplain fake' bigamy witness was told
    A WOMAN told Campsie Court today that a Melbourne man with whom she went through a marriage ceremony told her later that the man who officiated was not a proper chaplain but had "offered to act the part."
    Another witness told the Court that the "chaplain" had performed the ceremony while drunk.
    James Morton Leishman, 34, of East Malvern, Victoria, was charged with having bigamously married Margaret Elizabeth May on July 23, 1948, in Sydney.
    Mrs. Lorna Alice May, sister-in-law of Margaret May, said she saw a man dressed in clerical garb officiate at a marriage ceremony between Margaret May and Leishman at St. Phillip's Church hall, Sydney.
    She said: "The man stumbled and staggered through the ceremony. He seemed to have been drinking."
    Miss Margaret May said that Leishman proposed to her in 1948 and said he wanted a friend of his, "an Army chaplain," to marry them.
    She said that the "chaplain" held a book which "appeared to be a Bible" while he hesitantly read the marriage service.
    Miss May said she had a daughter after the "marriage."
    Later Leishman had told her that he was married and had not been able to get a divorce.
    Leishman was committed for trial at Parramatta Quarter Sessions on July 9.

  • 24 Jun 1951: The Chaplain Appeared To Have Been Drinking, Court Told. Fantastic Story Of 'Phantom Marriage'
    Allegations that a married man had staged a fantastic phantom marriage in the hall of fashionable St. Phillip's Church, York St., on July 23, 1948, with himself as the groom and a young Punchbowl woman as the bride, were made at Campsie Court this week.
    It was claimed that the ceremony was performed by a so-called chaplain, who appeared to have been drinking. The bride in the ceremony, Margaret Elizabeth Gordon May, of 9 Catherine St., Punchbowl, told the court she had believed that she and the groom, James Morton Leishman, had been really married, and it was not until she had lived with Leishman for almost 18 months and had borne him a child, that he told her the marriage was not legal. He said the ceremony had been performed by a man who was not a proper chaplain but who had agreed to act the part, said Miss May.
    Leishman (34), formerly a high school teacher at Wollongong, but now a traveller living in Victoria, was charged that: On December 20, 1946, at Hindmarsh, South Australia, he married Nancy Ellen Green and that while so married on July 23, 1948, he married Miss May.
    Miss May told Mr. Raschke. S.M., that she first met Leishman at Wollongong in May, 1948. Not long afterwards he proposed marriage and she accepted.
    "He asked if I would be satisfied with a quiet wedding. I said yes, that was what I had always wanted.
    "He also asked would I be satisfied to be married in Sydney. I said yes.
    "He said he would like the marriage to be performed by a friend of his he had known from army days, some sort of navy chaplain.
    "I was to expect somebody who was rather shy and retiring in women's company.
    "The chaplain, he said, would not attend the reception.
    "I understood that my brother Roderick May would act as best man and that my sister-in-law Lorna Alice May would act as matron of honor.
    "Leishman told me the marriage would be held at St. Phillip's Church, York St., Sydney.
    "On July 23 I met Leishman at St. Phillip's, drove there with my brother Roderick and my sister-in-law Lorna. My mother was at the ceremony. It was about 6.15 p.m.
    "He met us outside. Then we all went in together to the hall at St. Phillip's, where Leishman introduced us to the chaplain.
    "I can't remember in detail the chaplain's garb except that he was in clerical garb as I expected. He had on the usual collar.
    "Read Hesitantly"
    "There was also another man there I did not know.
    "Leishman explained that he had previously written to this man who he said, was a friend of his and asked the man to act as his best man.
    "Leishman asked my brother Rodney would he mind standing down in favor of this friend. Rod was quite agreeable.
    "When we went into the hall, Leishman and I stood together. The chaplain stood in front of us with a book. It appeared to me to be a bible.
    "The others were in the background sitting down. He read the marriage service. He did it rather hesitantly.
    "At the appropriate time he pronounced us man and wife and Leishman placed the wedding ring on my finger.
    "Before we left the hall we signed some documents which looked like marriage certificates.
    "I don't remember what became of those documents then, but I know that Leishman had a copy in his possession."
    Sgt. McKinley (prosecuting) I formally call for that document if it is in court.
    Mr. L. V. Kemp (for Leishman) : It is not produced.
    Miss May: "After signing the documents the party disbanded and the friend who acted as best man drove us around to the photographers.
    "Leishman was wearing military uniform. I can't remember whether he said he was still in the army or was in the reserve.
    "His full-time occupation was that of a high school teacher at Wollongong.
    "After our photos were taken the best man drove us to Rose's restaurant.
    "We had a dinner party there and a little reception. The best man was present, the matron of honor, my mother, an aunt and another brother.
    "After that Leishman and I stayed the weekend at the Hotel Steyne, Manly. When I went with him I believed we were married. We stayed
    at the Hotel Steyne as man and wife."
    Miss May said they later returned to Wollongong and then in December, 1949, after the birth of a daughter, she went with Leishman to visit his parents in Victoria. She heard something and returned home alone".
    On Jan. 25, 1950, Miss May said, Leishman called and she asked him: "Is it true that the chaplain was not authentic?"
    "He said 'He s not a proper chaplain. He was a man who agreed to act the part."
    'Was In Love'
    "I asked him why the marriage wasn't registered.
    "He said it wasn't really a legal marriage.
    "He asked what I intended to do; whether I would return to him eventually. I told him I would remain with my mother. I haven't seen him since."
    Mr. Kemp: When this ceremony took place I suppose you were in love with Leishman? — Yes.
    And you felt the same when he came to see you in Jan., 1950? — Yes.
    And I think you know a decree nisi has been pronounced in relation to his marriage in South Australia?— Yes.
    Would you be prepared to marry him when the degree is made absolute?—No.
    After Miss May had stepped down, her sister-in-law, Mrs. Lorna Alice May, of 9 Catherine St., Punchbowl, went into the witness-box, and
    said that the chaplain at the ceremony was dressed in a long black garment, covered with a white garment and had a sash around his neck with gold tassels on it. He wore a clerical collar.
    Said Mrs. May: He stumbled and stammered so much and repeated things so many times that I came to a certain conclusion.
    "He had the appearance that he had been drinking."
    Earlier, Mrs. Nancy Ellen Leishman, 17 Somerset Ave., Hilton, South Australia, gave evidence that the James Leishman in court was her husband.
    They were married Dec. 20, 1946, at Mile End Methodist Church, Adelaide, she said.
    Leishman, she said, told her he had been married to a girl in Scotland or England and that a divorce had been obtained.
    "We lived together for one year. There were ... children," said Mrs. Leishman.
    "We lived at Mt. Gambier until Dec., 1947. My husband went to Melbourne and I returned to my parents at Monash, South Australia.
    "I received a letter from my husband in 1948 asking me to furnish grounds for divorce. I then wrote my husband a letter.
    Mr. Kemp: How did you come to write the letter? — I found I wanted a divorce.
    Why? — Because I had committed adultery with a person whom I thought I wished to marry. I think you have obtained a decree nisi against
    your husband in South Australia? — Yes, this month.
    On the ground of your husband's adultery? — Yes.
    You called a Miss May to give evidence for you? — Yes.
    After you separated up at Mt. Gambier did your husband ever ask you to return to him? — Not in so many words.
    He attempted a reconciliation? — He wrote a letter in which he assumed I would return. And the position was that you refused to return? —Yes.
    Mrs. Leishman produced to the court a photo of herself and Leishman taken at their wedding reception.
    Mrs. Leishman was a beaming bride in full white regalia; Leishman a dashing moustached figure in army officer's uniform, bravely wearing a row of ribbons on his left chest and valiantly cutting the wedding cake with his sword.
    Det.-Sgt. J. S. Brown, of Burwood, gave evidence that at 9.45 a.m. on April 18, 1951, he spoke to Leishman at Melbourne's Russell St. police headquarters.
    Leishman was with his ...Mr Jones. ...said he showed .... decree nisi ... and told ... it referred to a divorce between himself and a woman named Elizabeth McDonald McKay Leishman. Leishman made no reply.
    "I showed him a certified marriage certificate from South Australia and said, 'Does this refer to a marriage between you and a woman named Nancy Ellen Green?' He did not reply,' said Brown.
    "I said, 'In 1948 did you go through a form of marriage with a woman named May'? He did not reply.
    "At Campsie Court on May 8, 1951, Leishman said to me, 'This should never have happened. If I could have found my wife in South Australia I would have divorced her and married Miss May legally.
    But I couldn't find my wife in South Australia, as she cleared out with another chap.'"
    Mr. Raschke, S.M., committed Leishman for trial at Parramatta Sessions in July, and released him on £ 150 bail. Leishman pleaded not guilty and reserved his defence.6
  • 7 Sep 1951: TEACHER CRIES IN DOCK WHEN FREED
    SYDNEY, Thursday: A former schoolteacher cried in the dock at Parramatta Quarter Sessions today when a jury acquitted him of having tricked a young woman into a bigamous marriage.
    The schoolteacher, James Marton Leishman, 35, formerly at Wollongong High School, had been charged with bigamy and of having the carnal knowledge of a woman by inducing her to believe he was her lawful husband. He pleaded not guilty.
    Leishman was alleged to have married Nancy Eileen Green in South Australia in December. 1946, and to have bigamously married Margaret Elizabeth Gordon May in July, 1948. Miss May said in evidence the 'marriage' ceremony had been performed by a man whom Leishman said was an ex-Naval chaplain, in a hall adjoining St. Phillip's Church, York Street, Sydney. She said a child was born in June, 1949.
    Leishman had admitted to her later, the marriage had been a fake. Miss May said. In a statement from the dock, Leishman said he explained the position to Miss May when he met her, and she had agreed to marry him.23
  • 9 Sep 1951: SALESMAN FREED ON CHARGES OVER BOGUS WEDDING-BRIDE KNEW ABOUT IT HE CLAIMS
    Claiming that his girl friend knew he was already married and had agreed to go through a bogus marriage ceremony at St. Phillip's Church hall before a man dressed as and acting the part of a naval chaplain, a goodlooking, smartly dressed Victorian, James Morton Leishman, was acquitted on two charges at Judge Nield's Parramatta Sessions on Thursday.

    Leishman (35), salesman, 2 Belgrave Rd., East Malvern had pleaded not guilty to (1) bigamy; (2) inducing a girl to have relations with him under the belief that he was her husband when in fact he was not. Following his acquittal Leishman was discharged. Miss Margaret Elizabeth Gordon May, 9 Catherine St., Punchbowl, a fresh complexioned, daintily dressed and girlishly spoken brunette who owned up to 28 years in the witness box, was principal witness against Leishman.
    Miss May said she met Leishman at Wollongong in 1948. He was teaching at the high school. They fell in love. He proposed marriage. After some early difficulties they were married on July 23 at St. Phillip's Church Hall, Phillip St. She believed the person officiating to be a clergyman and that she signed a marriage certificate.
    Miss May said her mother, brother and a sister-in-law attended the ceremony; wedding photos were taken at a studio and later there was a bigger family gathering at a reception at Rose's Restaurant.
    Later, she said, Leishman told her he was married to a girl named Nancy Ellen Green in South Australia and was awaiting a divorce.
    DIVORCE EVIDENCE
    Miss May said she was then still very much in love with Leishman, and was expecting a child. She agreed to continue to live with Leishman and to remarry when the decree came through, she said. When the child was about four months old, however, Leishman told her the marriage was bogus. He told me the chaplain, who he had claimed was a navy chaplain, was a man who had agreed to act as a chaplain at his request.
    Miss Ma y said she then refused to have anything further to do with Leishman. Early this year she gave evidence in Adelaide when Mrs. Nancy Leishman was granted a divorce on the ground of adultery between Leishman and Miss May.
    Cross-examined by Mr. S. G. Webb. K.C. (with Mr N. V. Kemp), for Leishman. Miss May denied that she knew all along the marriage was bogus.
    Miss May denied that she told Leishman's mother and sister she knew "she wasn't getting married"
    Miss May's sister-in-law, Norma Alice May, also of 9 Catherine St., Punchbowl, told of attending the wedding together with Miss May's mother and brother.
    Mrs. Norma May said she arrived early at the wedding took the clergyman by surprise when he was half-robed. She was very embarrassed, she said.
    She noticed he had trouble in conducting the service, repeated parts where he had difficulty in pronunciation.
    'I got the impression he had been drinking,' she said. She said she signed a document which she read and took to be a marriage certificate.
    'WAS UNHAPPY'
    In a statement from the dock Leishman said: — 'For two years prior to my first meeting Miss May I had been unhappily married.
    'My wife, unfortunately, insisted on living on a scale I could not afford. 'When I met Miss May she was living at her mother's flat. I explained to Miss May the unhappy circumstances leading up to my separation from my wife and she sympathised very much.
    'I saw her from time to time. We became very much attached. And, as I continued to see her, we fell in love.
    'Unfortunately her mother gave quite a bit of trouble and that led to subterfuges in our seeing one another.
    'It ultimately got to the stage that we were very much in love and wanted to be together.
    'She was very unhappy in the flat because she was nothing else than an unpaid servant while she was there.
    'REAL THING'
    'We decided that we would tell the mother we were married but there were two conditions. The first was that as soon as my divorce came through we would go quietly to a registry office and get married. The second was that on no account must her mother find out because then her mother would never forgive her.
    'We went ahead with the plan and I am certain that, if it hadn't been for her people we would now have been happily married I can only say I am absolutely innocent of these charges.'
    Leishman's mother, Mrs. Janet Leishman. and his sister Gertrude gave evidence that Miss May told them on a visit to Melbourne she knew Leishman was getting a divorce and it had been agreed that they live together until the divorce came through.
    Mrs. Janet Leishman added: 'She said she had been living with her mother, staying in at nights. But on going to business she had met another girl who had taken her out to several dances. At one of these dances she met my son. She said life was more or less passing her by and, having met my son and fallen in love with him, she knew it was the real thing. She knew that he was married and that she could get out of the affair if she made a mistake.
    'MOTHER HOSTILE'
    'She said she knew their marriage was not a regular ceremony because there were no papers and no registration. That was what I was worried about.
    'I came to Sydney to see her in February this year. Her mother was hostile. Miss May said she would never come back to my son because she would be ostracised.'
    Addressing the jury Mr. Webb said 'only a lunatic could have thought this marriage up and have carried it out, but that is no reason to find Leishman guilty of these charges.'

  • 29 Jul 1953: Expenses rigged, Crown alleges
    A DEPARTMENT of Agriculture official who studied the fruit fly pest in East Gippsland had made false expenses claims. Mr. M. Cussen, Crown Prosecutor, told a jury yesterday. James Leishman, 35, of Thomas st., Clayton, was charged in General Sessions on two counts of obtaining money by false pretences. Leishman, who had been an assistant entymologist for the Department of Agriculture, pleaded not guilty.
    Mr. Cussen alleged that a claim headed "fly studies" submitted by Leishman in April, 1951, for petrol expenses was false. "Evidence can be given that Leishman's car was in a garage being repaired on a number of the days for which he made large mileage claims.
    "New car"
    "Another claim for petrol money between July 8-15, 1951, states that Leishman was using a new car because the one he had been using had broken down," Mr. Cussen added. "It can be proved that Leishman did not have possession of the new car until July 13."
    The hearing will be resumed today. Mr. W. Fazio, instructed by Mr. J. Jones, appeared tor Leishman.25
  • 31 Jul 1953: Entomologist Sent to Gaol
    James Leishman, 35, entomologist, was sentenced to six months' imprisonment by Judge Moore, in General Sessions yesterday, for having submitted false expense accounts with intent to defraud the Department of Agriculture.
    Leishman admitted he had not travelled mileages for which he had claimed car allowance, but he considered the department owed him money for overtime; repairs and other items.
    Leishman admitted two prior convictions: His counsel (Mr. W. Fazio) said the first related to a period in 1931, when Leishman was at a theological college. Someone took his books and he took books belonging to someone else.
    The second, in 1941, was for filling out a marriage form to deceive the father of an unmarried girl with whom he was living.

  • 9 Jan 1926: BEACONSFIELD BUSH FIRE. BEACONSFIELD UPPER, Friday. Bush fires broke out again in the Beaconsfield Ranges on Wednesday in the gully near McLean's property. The fire quickly travelled into Mr. McBride's property, Linwood, and the gully near Kyogle. The cleared spaces around this property assisted the firefighters, who burnt a break past Kyogle and Alston as far as the deep gully. This the fire crossed, and burned fiercely towards Woondia Mia and Fern Acre. Towards evening it died down. During the night 67 points of rain fell, accompanied by a thunderstorm, and extinguished the fire.17

  • 14 Feb 1906: Ahern—Trewartha. On Thursday evening last at seven o'clock a very pretty wedding was solemnized at St. Mary's R. C. Church, Dandenong, the contracting parties being Mr. James Joseph Ahern and Miss Marion Louise Trewartha, both of Dandenong. The officiating clergyman being Rev. Fr. Gleeson. The bride was given away by her brother-in-law (Mr. A. J. Botterill). Miss C. Trewartha and Miss K. Ahern were the bridesmaids, and Mr. W. Ryan attended to the bridegroom; the ceremony passing off in a very pleasing manner. The bride wore a frock of silk and braided voille, trimmed with lace and ribbon, also the orthodox veil and wreath, and carried a beautiful bouquet of water lillies and agapanthasis. The going away dress was of grey tweed, trimmed with white cloth, corn flower and blue Valenciennes lace hat. The bridesmaids were attired in white silk dresses, trimmed with Vallace, and wore scarlet hats, their bouquets being of a similar color. The wedding breakfast was partaken of at the residence of the bride's sister, "Torquay," Thomas street, where the usual toasts were duly honored, and the happy couple left for Melbourne by the 9.30 train, en route to Clifton Springs, where the honeymoon will be spent. The bride groom's presents to the bridesmaids consisted of handsome gold bar brooches studded with pearls. Amongst the many presents received were handsome and costly gifts from a host of friends.   • 1 Dec 1954: Former Dande Show Sec Takes Sheep Prizes
    ONE LITTLE sidelight on the recent successful Dandenong Show was the appearance of the name of a former secretary in the list of prize-winners. We refer to Mr. James J. (Jim) Ahern, of Pakenham, former Berwick Shire Secretary, who, in partnership with his son Arthur, is running sheep in his retirement. With two fine pens of fat lambs they carried off the First prize for Five fat lambs for Export and also First for five fat lambs for the trade.
    Old-timers will recall that Jim was secretary of the Society round about half-a-century ago—and incidentally he’s an uncle of the present secretary, Frank Storan.
    Unfortunately at the moment his health is not the best, and on behalf of his many district friends we wish him a speedy recovery—raid further success in, the sheep game.11
  • 28 Jul 1955: Pakenham racing club head dies
    Mr. James Joseph Ahern, Pakenham Racing Club president, died in Pakenham Hospital yesterday, aged 79 years.
    The late Mr. Ahern, one of the best liked figures in country racing, had been president of Pakenham Racing Club for 29 years, and its success was due mainly to his tireless efforts.
    He also was secretary of Berwick Shire for a number of years.
    He is survived by a widow, three sons and three daughters. One of his sons, Mr. J. J. Ahern, jnr., is an assistant to the Victoria Racing Club stipendiary stewards.12

  • 26 May 1915: RAMAGE. RE-ARRANGEMENT OF OFFICES. Mr James Ramage, who has acted as clerk of works for the Berwick shire council for the past 22 years, has resigned from that position. In his resignation, which was put before the coun cil at last Saturday's meeting, Mr Ramage stated that the work of the shire was increasing and he felt that he was unable to cope with it. Cr James said the council was hardly prepared for such a drastic change as the resignation would cause. He was sure all would greatly regret the loss of Mr Ramage. He had proved himself a valuable officer. He (Cr James) knew from his general observation, extending over a period of about 16 years, that Mr Ramage had taken the greatest of interest in his work—he could not have done more if the expenditure were his own. He was always anxious about any work in hand, and gave it close attention. He had a practical knowledge of the council's require ments and attended to his work faithfully. His duties would be partly taken up by the secretary who had also proved himself a painstaking officer, and had, given close attention to his duties. He had no doubt that Mr Ahern's work would meet with the same approval as that carried out by Mr Ramage. He understood that Mr Ramage felt the work was too much for him. However, as Mr Ahern was taking on the work, he felt the council would be all right. He asked Mr Ramage if there was any chance of his re-considering the position Mr Ramage said he had definitely made up his mind on the subject.
    Cr James remarked that the council was losing a valued and tried servant, and he moved that the resignation be accepted with very much regret. Cr Henty, in seconding the motion, said the council was losing an excellent officer—one who knew every nook and corner of the shire and had done much good work. He was glad to know they were not losing Mr Ramage altogether as he would still hold the post of rate collector and would attend the meetings. He was looked upon as the father of the council, and they all hoped that he would be spared for very many years to meet with them and assist them with his advice. Cr Close said he regretted Mr Ramage was leaving. In carrying out his work he always had the ratepayers' wishes at heart, and he had been of great assist ance to the shire.
    Cr Barr endorsed all that had been said. They were losing a good man, and he much regretted it. Mr Ramage had a nice way of dealing with the ratepayers, and generally managed to secure what he wanted. The President regretted that Mr Ramage was giving up the position. Some had complained of the work done by him, but he could say of Mr Ramage that there was never a more faithful servant to the people, and none more scrupulous. When con tracting he had received fatherly advice from Mr Ramage, which he did not altogether appreciate at the time, but it had taught him a good lesson. Mr Ramage had carried out his duties faithfully and well. The motion was carried.
    Cr Henty then explained that the resignation necessitated a re arrangement of officers, which had been decided on as follows: —The services of Mr Keys as consulting engineer would be retained, and he would receive £100 per annum, as against £25 at present ; MrAhern would act as clerk of works and receive £50 extra ; and Mr Ramage would act as rate-collector and attend to other duties, at a salary of L120. The change meant an extra cost to the council of L25. He moved that these officers be appointed. The motion was seconded by Cr James and carried.8
