  • 6 May 1895: SAVAGE ATTACK BY A ST. BERNARD DOG. BERWICK, FRIDAY.
A large St. Bernard dog belonging to Miss Magill made a ferocious attack about 8 o'clock last night on a girl 18 years of age named Margaret Holt. Miss Holt and Miss Magill met in the street, and as the former attempted to caress the dog it flew savagely at her, biting her hands and knocking her down. Miss Magill promptly threw herself on the animal, and exerted her whole strength to pull him off, but without avail. For over a quarter of an hour the two ladies were in this predicament, when Miss Magill's cries were heard by several living in the vicinity, but it was not until Mr. Otto Fritzlaff shot at the animal while it was standing over Miss Holt that her injuries could be ascertained. It was then found that in addition to the wounds on the hand (which had to be stitched) the arm and back of the head and neck were badly bitten. The savageness of the attack was shown by the blood on the fence and grass, and by the strips of clothing strewn about at the spot where the occurrence took place. Miss Holt was taken to Miss Magill's residence, which was close at hand, and attended by Dr. Bennie, who reports that, considering the severe shock sustained, his patient is progressing as favourably as can be expected.11
  • 4 Feb 1937: A very old identity of this district, in the person of Mr. Otto Fritzlaff, passed away at his home in Brown street, Berwick, on Wednesday, January 27, at the age of 77 years. He was a native of Harkaway, and was well-known in the district. Deceased had been in ill-health for some time, and his end was not unexpected. He was buried in the Harkaway cemetery, only a short distance from his birth place. The burial service was conducted by the Rev. W. L. Collins, after which the service of the I.0.0.F. Lodge was read. A widow, three sons and one daughter are left to mourn their loss.12
