  • 16 Aug 1888: COSMOPOLITAN LAND BANKING COMPANY.
The seventh half-yearly meeting of share holders of the Cosmopolitan Land Banking Company Limited was held on Wednesday afternoon, at its office, Normanby-chambers, Chancery-lane, Mr James Evans presiding.
The report and balance sheet, which were published in The Argus of the 3rd inst., were presented. Thev showed that there was a balance of £37, 822 14s. 7d. to the credit of the profit and loss account as the result of the half year's transactions. Out of this sum the directors proposed to pay a dividend at the rate of 10 per cent per annum, and to give a bonus to the shareholders equal to the dividend, which would absorb altogether £3,615 5s. 8d. , to place £29,250 to the credit of the reserve fund, bringing it up to £45,000, and to carry the balance of £4,957 8s 11d. forward to the ensuing half year.
The CHAIRMAN, in moving the adoption of the documents, congratulated the shareholders upon the directors being able to present them with such a favourable report and balance sheet, and upon the prosperous condition of the affairs of the company.
During the past half-year the capital of the company hast been largely increased, and he would point out that the properties of the company had been taken on this occnsion at the same valuation as they were set down in the previous balance sheet, thus showing that the directors had not loaded or increased the valuations, with the view of submitting a favourable balance sheet, the amount at the credit of the profit and loss account being the actual profit made. Mr. John Canterbury had recently retired from the board of management and Dr. Le Fevre, M.L.C., had been appointed to fill the vacancy.
Mr. J. B. WHITTY seconded the motion, and said that the shareholders ought to be highly gratified with the result of the half year's business.
Dr. LEFEVRE, M.L.C, in supporting the resolution, stated that before he had accepted the position on the directorate he had carefully looked over the execution of the properties belonging to the company, and found that they were considerably below their actual value; in fact, he had been prepared to take over the whole of them at 25 percent above the valuation as set down in the company's books.
The motion was carried, and the directors were authorise to add a bonus to the salaries of the officers.
A vote of thanks to the directors for the able manner in which they had managed the affairs of the company terminated the meeting.10
