  • 12 Jul 1877: In Memoriam. REV. BENJAMIN BACKHOUSE.
With deep regret we have to record the death of the Rev. Benjamin Backhouse, the agent of the British and Foreign Bible Society for the colonies of Australia, Tasmania, and New Zealand, which took place at his residence in Alma-street, St. Kilda, on the evening of Monday, the 25th June, after a lengthened illness. Mr. Backhouse was so widely known and deservedly respected throughout these colonies that his departure from amongst us demands more than a passing notice.
Mr. Backhouse was born at Wells, Somersetshire, and his education at the Grammar-school of that city was supplemented by private tuition, his instructors (the Rev. W. Wheeler and — Groser) being both men of scholarly attainments. He was subsequently for five years a student at Spring Hill College, Birmingham, where he was privileged to become acquainted with the Rev. J. Angell James, who continued his firm friend ever after.
On leaving college he became the pastor of Roborough Tabernacle, Gloucestershire, one of the churches founded by Lady Huntingdon, and frequently the scene of the Rev. John Whitfield's labours. Previously to this he had been offered by a friend the reversion of a living in the Church of England, which, however, he thought it right to decline accepting. His marriage in 1848 was followed by his removal to Bolton, in Lancashire, where he remained but a short time. He was afterwards for twelve years the pastor of the Old Meeting House, Scarborough, a church founded by a Scotch covenanter, and possessing a curious relic of the days of persecution in his Bible, pierced through and through with a sword-thrust intended for the owner. In 1862 or '63 Mr. Backhouse took his family to Heidelberg, in Germany, with a view to permanent residence in that country — an intention frustrated by unforeseen circumstances. While there, he was accustomed to hold divine service on Sunday afternoons in St. Peter's Church — interesting as containing the tomb of Olympia Morata. In 1865 Mr. Backhouse left Scarborough and took up his residence at Bedford, with a view to secure for his sons the advantages afforded by its admirable public schools. After living there five years he was, in 1870, chosen by the Bible Society Committee to be their agent in Australasia. He arrived at Melbourne about the 23rd April, 1871, and the same evening spoke at the annual meeting of the Victoria Auxiliary Bible Society.
Mr. Backhouse at once threw himself into his work, visiting in succession the colonies of Victoria, New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia, Tasmania, and New Zealand ; lecturing and preaching sermons on behalf of the society, holding conferences with the committees of existing auxiliaries and branches, and forming new committees in every centre of population where a few friends of the society could be got to work together. This work he pursued with unflagging energy throughout the whole of his career up to the time of his last illness, the fruit of his labours being apparent in the great extension of the Bible Society's work in these colonies, and the increase in the amounts transmitted to London as freewill offerings to aid the parent society. Mr. Backhouse left Melbourne for New Zealand at the end of February, 1876. In his first letter home he complained of 'not feeling himself' — he seemed to be more painfully conscious of the length and wearisomeness of the various journeys marked out for him, than had been his wont ; but a letter written in June — speaking of pain in the chest, and great difficulty in walking fast or uphill — was the first intimation his family received or serious indisposition. He returned home in July, looking thinner and less vigorous, but firmly believing that a few weeks' rest at home would be perfectly restorative. Finding, however, that his strength continued to decline, he sought medical advice, and enjoyed, in consequence, a temporary remission of the worst symptoms. But it too soon became apparent that, in spite of all that human aid could minister, the disease was insidiously working its way to its fatal termination.
During his illness Mr. Backhouse was visited by many friends, who were warmly attached to him both for his own and for his work's sake. He was not what is commonly called a great preacher or speaker; but by his intense love for his work, his unflagging zeal, his earnestness, and his gentle, kindly disposition, and consistent Christian life, he was enabled to accomplish more than many a man of higher gifts and fewer graces would have done. His end was eminently peaceful ; he spoke cheerfully of himself as being in his Saviour's hands, content to labour as long as pleased the Lord to enable him to do so, but 'willing to depart and be with Christ, which is far better.6'
