    A quiet but pretty wedding was celebrated at 'Roslyn,' Devenport, yesterday afternoon by the Rev. D. S. Jones, the contracting parties being Christina, youngest daughter of the late Mr and Mrs Thomas Ross, of Inveresk, Launceston, and Mr William Grieve, of Devonport. Only the intimate friends and relatives of the parties were present. The bride, who was given away by Mr F. S. Wilson, of Latrobe, wore a dress of crepe de chene, trimmed with lace and insertion, and wore the orthodox veil and wreath of orange blossoms. She was attended by her sister, Miss F. Ross, who was attired in a cream gown. Mr B. Symons supported the bridegroom as best man.
    After the ceremony a number of guests sat down to the wedding breakfast, laid out in a large room at "Roslyn," and the usual toasts were honoured.
    Mr and Mrs Grieve left later by motor for Burnie, and will proceed to the mainland, thence entering upon a twelve-months' visit to Scotland. The bride's travelling dress was a navy blue coat, and skirt, trimmed with Irish crochet lace. The presents were both numerous and costly, and included a tea service from the Coronation Ladies' Lodge, Protestant Alliance, of which the bride had held the position of treasurer. The festivities were continued last evening, when a number of young people were socially entertained. Christine Mary Ross20
  • 10 Mar 1915: DEATH OF MRS. GRIEVE.
    The painfully sudden death of Mrs. William Grieve, which took place in the Queenstown Hospital in the early hours of last Saturday morning, came as a severe shock to the community, for it was only a few days before that they had seen her about as usual, apparently in the most perfect health. Mrs. Grieve, however, had complained more than a week previously of an internal pain, and went under medical treatment for this, but no improvement came about, and as the result of her illness taking a serious turn an operation was decided on. This was performed on Friday afternoon, and it was found that she was suffering from peritonitis. After the operation she never rallied, and on Saturday morning passed away. Deceased was the youngest daughter (Christine Mary) of the late Mr. Thomas Ross, of Inveresk, Launceston, and was married to Mr. William Grieve on October 15, 1913, at Devonport, where she had a large circle of friends. Shortly after marriage she came to reside at Queenstown, and during her residence here established firm friendships with all who became acquainted with her. Besides a husband to mourn his loss, she leaves a large number of brothers and sisters, some of whom are in the State and some on the mainland. One brother is at present a Church of England clergyman in Sydney, and another is a school teacher in Hobart, but was formerly at Waratah. Mr. and Mrs. Grieve were devotedly attached to each other, and the deepest and sincerest sympathy has been extended to the sorrowing husband by those who feel for him in his hour of poignant grief.
    The mortal remains of Mrs. William Grieve were yesterday (Tuesday) morning conveyed to Devonport for interment. The local funeral arrangements were performed by Mr. Richard Clarke. Christine Mary Ross21

  • 5 Jun 1926: DEATH OF MR. W. GRIEVE.
    Advice was received at Queenstown of the death of Mr. William Grieve, one of the earliest pioneers of the Lyell district, which occurred yesterday at his late residence, 48 Docker street, Elwood, Melbourne, after a short illness. The late Mr. Grieve, who was a native of Scotland, arrived at Queenstown about 27 years ago, and resided there until six years ago, when he retired from business and departed for the mainland. As a building contractor, Mr. Grieve was connected with the erection of the majority of the business establishments and residences at Queenstown. ln the early days he was one of the pioneer shopkeepers at Penghana.
    During his 20 years' residence, the late Mr. Grieve made many friends in the district, and was highly esteemed and respected by all. He took a keen interest in the affairs of the Presbyterian Church, and was largely instrumental in the erection of the St. Andrew's Church at Queenstown. Deceased was 72 years of age, and leaves a widow, a son (Mr. J. C. Grieve, inspector of mines, Wangaratta), and four daughters, Mesdames J. H. Bowskill (Queenstown), G. L. Wood (Malvern, Victoria), R. Gibson, jun. (Devonport), and J. Byron (St. Kilda).23

  • 15 Feb 1907: A SUDDEN DEATH. A sudden death took place this evening. Mrs William Grieve, of Queenstown, who is on a visit to Devonport, was out walking with a friend, when she complained of heart trouble. Despite restoratives and medical aid she quickly passed away, after being taken to her residence close by. An inquest will be held to-morrow.13
  • 16 Feb 1907: INQUEST UNNECESSARY.— The magisterial enquiry into the circumstances surrounding the death of Mrs Isabella Grieve, of Queenstown, which took place suddenly in Stewart street on Thursday, was to have been held yesterday, but after the jury had been summoned, a telegram was received from Mr E. Rule, the coroner at Zeehan, notifying that deceased had been under treatment by Dr. Hamilton, who would forward a certificate. With this and Dr Addison's certificate that death was due to syncope or heart failure, the coroner (Dr. Smith) declared an enquiry was unnecessary. The funeral will take place at the Bluff cemetery this afternoon, leaving the residence of Mrs S. P. Griffiths at 4 p.m.14

  • 30 May 1900: GEELONG. On Tuesday flags were flying at half mast out of respect for Mr. Andrew White, a prominent resident of the district, who passed away on Monday. The deceased gentleman, who was of genial disposition and as keen a lover of the turf as the late Messrs. Donald Wallace and W. R. Wilson, was formerly a member of the Connewarre Road Board, and since the time that it merged into the South Barwonshire council he had continuously sat as a representative of the ratepayers. On several occasions he occupied the presidential chair. One of his sons is now secretary to the shire. The late Mr. White, who resided in the Geelong district for upwards of 50 years, held the position of returning officer for the South-Western Province up to the time of his death.8

  • 30 May 1913: MRS. L. J. ALLEN. After a short illness, Isabel Florence, the wife of Mr. L. J. Allen, manager of the National Bank in Tammin, died in Northam at the early age of twenty-six years. The cause of death was acute pneumonia.
    The remains were forwarded from Mr J. W. Purslowe's private mortuary to Tammin on Thursday morning, the funeral taking place there in the afternoon in the Anglican portion of the Tammin cemetery, the Rev. J. Vine officiating at the grave.7
