  • 26 Sep 1917: In Memoriam. MR. JOHN WEBB. Brighton, New-street circuit, and Mill-street church particularly, have sustained a severe loss by the decease of Mr. John Webb, of Brighton. Born at Bideford, Devon, England, in 1830, he was there educated, for teaching. Coming to Victoria in 1848, he commenced as a teacher at Brunswick. At the-time of the gold fever, he went to Castlemaine. It was there he began to preach, and, standing on a stump, gave his first message to the miners. In 1852 he came to Brighton, where he continued to reside for 63 years. Mr. Webb was engaged in teaching until 1890, and was head master of Wilson-street State school at the time of his retirement. For several years he was on the Council of Churches ; a member of the British and Foreign Bible Society, Brighton branch, for 25 years, and a representative of the Central Auxiliary for a long period. He was for many years correspondent of the Board of Advice, Education Department, and the indefatigable organiser for religious instruction in the State schools of the district. Year after year, in succession, he was elected to attend our Annual Conference, and was a representative to the General Conference. Connected with the Local Preachers' Association, he was a trustee, and member of the executive, always taking a deep interest therein. He was for some time lay treasurer of the Loan Fund for Victoria, and of the Foreign Missions Fund. For Brighton Circuit he was circuit steward for over 30 years; and secretary of the Local Preachers' meeting for a long period. At Mill-street he was society steward, trustee, treasurer of the trust, and class leader to the end of his earthly course. After he had served in his own age by the will of God, he fell on sleep," on July 17th, 1917, and devout men followed him to his burial in Brighton Cemetery two days later. A memorial service was held in Mill-street Church subsequently, conducted by the Rev. W. Hunt, when there was a large congregation. Our departed brother did indeed serve. No one who knew him could doubt the truths of Christianity. It was the Christ-like spirit which permeated his being and shone so radiantly upon all who came into communion with him. He never grew weary in well-doing. His concern for the welfare, of those around was unabated. His love for the House of God was intense. Strict in attendance upon public worship. Nine days before his death he was in his accustomed seat in the sanctuary. Although he had attained the great age of 87 years, his mental powers were vigorous until within a few days of his departure. Those who had the privilege of attending the class meeting held every Tuesday at his residence speak with ap preciation of his clear testimony, his Scripture expositions, his affectionate counsels, the Christly spirit, which won all hearts. His time, talents, influence, money, were all placed on the altar of service till he slept. Three days before he left us, those who saw him had a precious season. All was bright. Even then, before brief final prayer, he inquired about the Sabbath services so near, and ever dear, to him. His spirit is with God his memory is blessed.14

Sir,- While at berwick one day last week, it was brought under my notice by Mr Henderson of Upper Beaconsfield that he applied to your Department for a piece of land that was held some years ago by Mr Ladd. I am enclosing to you the letter so that you may see for yourself. I shall be glad if you will go into the matter and give me an early reply. Yours truly, W Keast.8

I have to report for your information, that I could not find any person named Ladd at Gembrook.
I have learned that there is a man of that name residing near Emerald and I have sent it to the Berwick Police to see if he is the man concerned.

The report then contains a note that the block is 2 mile south of Emerald.
M.C. 3960 A B Steele reports on 24.5.1906 "Sir, I beg to state tht there are no improvements of any value on this land. The land apparently has been fenced at one time but there is very little left from the bush fires and which is rotten and of no value."
Another memo dated 31 May 1906 by Victoria Police states that Crown Lands files returned. Const Keogh's neglect has been dealt with by the infliction of a fine of £1.8 
Land-Note27 Jul 1906 GEM--48D + 140F + 48F. Despite earlier correspondence stating that Matthew Ladd was deceased, the Lands Department send him a letter to call him to the Local Land Board on 7 August 1906 to show cause why his license should not be forfeited.
CHS Ladd replies that Mr M Ladd has been deceased since July 1901.
It is not until 15 November 1906 that the land is available for selection again and Mr Henderson was so informed.8

  • 9 Oct 1900: The teaching staff and pupils of the Hamilton and Western District College are about to perpetuate the memory of one of the old pupils, Lieutenant Reginald Stephen Robert Stapylton Bree, who died of enteric fever in South Africa. Lieutenant Bree was the son of Mr Robert Stapylton Bree, a well known resident of Hamilton who was connected by marriage with the Henty family, the pioneers of the Western District, and the greatest sympathy has been felt for the father in the sad bereavement. The memorial takes the form of a handsome brass plate, with an inscription recording the fact that Lieutenant Bree was a pupil of the college, and it will be placed upon one of the walls. The work was entrusted to Mr Matthew Ladd, engraver, of Flinders lane, and its execution does him credit.13

  • 7 Mar 1877: A melancholy accident happened at Pakenham on Friday morning to Mrs. McClelland, a widow with three children to support, and it is to be hoped that some action will be taken by residents to assist her in her present position. It appears that she was on her way to Berwick, riding on horseback, whn, shortly after she started, the horse stumbled and fell, throwing her over its head, the animal falling upon her, breaking her arm, and causing other injuries. She was brought down to Berwick on Saturday morning to Dr Elmes, who attended her. One of her arms is broken at the wrist, and she will be useless for some time in her efforts to maintain her children.12
