Newspaper-Articles

  • 20 May 1942: Berwick. OLD ESTABLISHED BUSINESS SOLD.
WHEN Mr. John Grant, Berwick’s octogenarian undertaker—he is 82—recently disposed of his old-established business to Wm. J. Garnar and Son, of Dandenong, two very old firms were merged. Both have been operating since the very early days. Mr. John Grant established his business when Berwick was young and has carried it on successfully right up to date despite his increasing years. Under the terms of the sale he will act as Wm. J. Garnar’s representative in Berwick.
Coming into being when the late Mr. J. W. Garnar purchased the undertaking business from the last Mr John Hemmings, its founder in Dandenong, the firm now known as Wm. J. Garnar and Son has had a long and successful career. It’s scope should be considerably extended by this latest expansion.20
  • 17 Mar 1943: Death Of Berwick Octogenarian.
ANOTHER of Berwick’s dwindling band of grand old men, in the person of Mr. John Grant, breathed his last in the Berwick Bush Nursing Hospital on Monday. A native or Berwick, he spent the whole of his 82 years there and was one of the best known of the town's old identities.
He was the eldest son of the late Robert and Agnes Grant, and was a nephew of the late Hon. James Buchanan. Ever since he was able to take up the trade, the late Mr. Grant started out as a coachbuilder and undertaker. Very active for his age, he conducted a business in High street, Berwick, right up until 9 months ago. Even after disposing of it, he continued his interest until the end. Universally esteemed and respected, the late Mr Grant was almost a part of the town itself and was universally liked and respected. His fatal illness descended on him a fortnight ago when he suffered a stroke from which he never recovered. He was admitted to the Berwick B.N. Hospital, but failed to rally and passed away on Monday.
The funeral cortege, a very large and representative one, left his home in High street today for the Berwick cemetery, with which he was closely connected for most of his life.
The Rev. C. Jones performed the last sad rites and W. J. Garnar and Sons had charge of the funeral.
The pall-bearers were Evan Henry, N. Beaumont, J. Richardson, A. Buchanan, Len Lindsay, J. Thomas, J. Kirkham and Clyde Greaves.21
  • 7 May 1943: JOHN GRANT, Late of Berwick, Retired Wheelwright, Deceased. - After fourteen clear days Jane Buchanan Grant, of Berwick, spinster, the executrix appointed by the deceased's will, dated the twenty-sixth day of June, 1905, will APPLY to the Supreme Court for a grant of PROBATE of the said WILL (William James Grant, the executor appointed by the said will, having predeceased the testator).

  • 29 Oct 1932: FLESH IN ARMOUR. GOOD WAR STORY. BOOKS OF WEEK
LEONARD MANN has written a really good war story in "Flesh in Armour" (Melbourne, Phaedrus).
While the real hero of the book is the platoon to which Frank Jeffreys belonged, and the others belonged, the individual tragedy of Jeffreys is well shown.
His fellow soldiers, too, are real, not mere lay figures. And the writer has a markedly detached and objective way with his characters. He says of the men of the platoon:—"Their life together and the common dangers of the war bred in them a certain strange toleration. It imposed a sort of code of conduct to which all generally conformed."
Life in a hospital in England is cleverly, if lightly, sketched, and the story of a visit by the Duchess is excellent. It is the Duchess who remarks to the convalescent wounded:—
"And soon you will be better and will be going back to fight for us again, won't you?"25
  • 2 Jul 1937: Ahead of Maugham
"LEONARD MANN gives you a sweating sordid Sydney, with passages of real beauty shining through. In this sudden converging of poetry through realistic detail, he is already ahead of Somerset Maugham."
Sir Hugh Walpole then refers to the book’s atmosphere of Sydney with its hot beaches, its beautiful sea and the reeking, congested crowd of humanity.
"In conveying a sense of heat, Mann is almost as good as Kipling,” adds Sir Hugh Walpole. “I hope he will not be persuaded to become too intellectual, too poetical and symbolical, too Australian, too grand, and too difficult to understand. To continue showing humans in whom you can believe is ambition enough for any man.”
    Australian Prize
THIS is not Mr. Mann's first book. He won the Australian Literary Society’s prize in 1932 for a book called Flesh in Armour and has had another novel published since.
Strangely, he had no literary ambitions in his early days. At Wesley he never once contributed to the school magazine.
But when he returned from the war and became successively as sociate to Judge Lukin and advocate before the Arbitration Court, he began to dabble in writing as a hobby.
A few short stories and some legal and political articles for The Herald gave him an ambition for bigger things.
Now his writing has won world recognition. He is 41.26
  • 3 Jul 1937: "BOOK OF THE MONTH" HONOUR FOR AUSTRALIAN
    MELBOURNE, Friday.
The latest novel of Mr. Leonard Mann, of East Malvern, who conducted the employers' case in the recent basic wage enquiry, has been chosen by the Book Society, London, as "the book of the month" for July.
In a review of the book, which is called "Murder in Sydney," Sir Hugh Walpole said that in his realistic detail "Mr. Mann was already ahead of Somerset Maugham, and that in conveying a sense of heat he was almost as good an Kipling."
Mr. Mann is secretary of the Victorian Employers' Federation, and is novelist in his spare time. He is a former student of Wesley College and a graduate of the University of Melbourne. In 1932 he won the Australian Literary Society's prize for a book entitled "Flesh in Armour."27
  • 19 Sep 1937: Book Review. LAWYER NOVELIST'S SUCCESS
'A Murder In Sydney' Is the Goods
LEONARD MANN, a Digger who gravitated from a clerkship in the Defence Department to the Bar, has written three novels 'Flesh In Armour,' 'Human Drift,' and his latest and undoubtedly the best—'Murder in Sydney.' Leonard Mann writes as a hobby. If he continues at the present rate of achievement he must find that his hobby is certainly remunerative.
MANN has a compelling style, and a fine descriptive touch, which lands him far beyond mediocrity. 'Murder in Sydney puts him in the first flight of Australian authors.
The book, dealing as it does with true life characters living about us in Sydney, with its immense background of our city, its beaches. Its lounges, every characteristic known so well to the native, has an absorbing interest to us. Its worth abroad in publicising our country should be inestimable. Some of Mann's cameos of description are gems. His characters are made to live and you can establish the author's picture of them in your mind—bating and sympathising—the true hallmark of a writer's ability.
Here is material for picturisation—something far divorced from what we have had served up to us in the past.
A scenarist would revel in the task of preparing the story for the screen. Leonard Mann, who is in his early forties, probably finds that the financial return from writing at the moment does not warrant his discarding briefs for the full-time job of reading his proofs.
Still, with his facility and with tons of writing left in him and years to develop further ideas, Leonard stands a rosy chance of discarding law for letters.
Most of the action of 'Murder in Sydney' is laid at Manly, and a particularly good job is the delineation of the character of Barbara, the murderess, and the description of her mental struggles as she faces the knowledge that a much-loved mother is to be replaced by her father's second choice. Other characters are strongly drawn, too, while the story carries conviction because of the uncolored, certain manner in which the author describes the police investigation of the murder.
There are no fictional detectives, achieving brilliant results by a lucky guess: but regular painstaking investigators who plod carefully along in the regulation way, which, in fact, is the way in which most murders are solved.
"Murder In Sydney" rings true, its plot is clear and likely to have been based on an actual crime, the characters live for the reader, and so it is impressive.

  • 27 Sep 1938: Canned
Leonard Mann, whose first novel "Flesh In Armour," won the Literature Society a gold medal when it was published a few years ago, told Oriel an amusing story yesterday.
He was in a big city lending library a few days ago when a woman came in and asked the librarian for a book by an Australian writer about the war" She remembered neither the author nor the title, but thought the latter was something like "A Tin of Bully Beef".
"You don't mean "Flesh in Armour," do you?" inquired the librarian.
"Yes, that's it," she said contentedly, walking out presently with the book under her arm
"And I thought it was a title that people couldn't get mixed up," said Mann ruefully.29
  • 25 Jun 1939: IDYLL OF REALISM. "Mountain Flat," by Leonard Mann. Jonathan Cape, London
An impressive crescendo in drama marks Leonard Mann's fourth novel, "Mountain Flat."
PREVIOUSLY he wrote "Flesh In Armour," a pictorial narrative of war; "Human Drift, a cinema reel of Victorian goldfields; and "Murder in Sydney," in which the tragedy was the introduction of a striking analysis of character. In this book, the characters are made to lead up to the central tragedy. For its skill in construction, "Mountain Flat" is perhaps the best of them all, though its picture is smaller.
Mountain Flat is a small community of a type dotted here and there in Australia. Worked out as a gold diggings, it is now peopled by a group of small farmers, who with wheat and cows make a scratch living, varied with a little prospecting for sparse gold. Their British ancestry is mixed with Italian and German strains, and the Latin blood of old Grandfather Negrelli is the key to most of the story. This tough octogenarian marched with Garibaldi; in Naples he killed his private enemy for good cause, and he still cherishes the knife he stabbed with.
Anita and Tessa, the two half-Italian Negrelli girls, married the full-British Australians, George Coburn and Andy Galton. When brothers-in-law are in competition for the same pieces of desirable land, with jealous sister wives urging them on, family ill-will may follow. This can be intensified when two grandsons, Giovanni ("Vanni") Coburn and Bob Galton, want favors from the same pretty girl, Laura Ainsley. Rural wooing, perhaps oftener than urban, is apt to reach its climax before the wedding ceremony. The book will show you with what skill the author uses such an episode to make pretty Laura Ainsley the agent bringing the slumbering family feud into open war.
Conventional village idylls are not to be written in Australia; this book is an idyll of realism.
The setting of Mountain Flat is real and picturesque, and all the people are individual. You may see the district through the eyes of the schoolmaster with his 15 pupils, the neighboring lawyer who fixes the land deals, and the member of Parliament who knows The Flat only as a clutch of a few useful votes.
By the way, a London reviewer recently called Leonard Mann a well-known journalist in Australia. That, of pourse, was Cecil H. Mann. Leonard is a barrister in Melbourne. — A.M.30
  • 10 Oct 1942: SET IN MELBOURNE. THE GO-GETTER, by LEONARD MANN. Sydney: Angus and Robertson); 7/8,
Here, in "The Go-Getter," is an Australian novel that is Australian, not because it is branded with the emu and kangaroo, or because it is redolent of mulga and reeking with horse, but because it is Australian in spirit. Mr Leonard Mann has not fallen into the pit of writing an English novel with an Australian background. His people belong to the country mentally and psychologically. They blend in with the Melbourne setting as though they belonged. His leading figure, Chris Gibbons, is no squatter or social light. Judged from the average point of view, Chris is rather shady in character, but his shadiness merely mirrors his environment. He is on the outer fringe of society. Through his misplaced loyalty to a blackguard a County Court judge had said some unpleasant things about him as a witness. His policy in life had been "easy money"—nothing that the law could take hold of, but he sailed close to the wind. Then the depression caught him. He was deserted by his wife and found himself with the responsibility of his 2 children. Chris gritted his teeth and hung on. Then came temptation through a shady lawyer. There was money, but risk. Mr Mann's story is that of the transaction in which Chris, fell, and through which he rose.
Mr Mann handles his material with the touch of an artist. He makes Chris real, and the girl, Phyllis, an honest medium of his salvation. All his characters are faithfully drawn, and equally well he paints in the background of the city that is so much a part of the story.-E.C.31
  • 20 Apr 1943: On behalf of the Australian Literature Society it was announced yesterday that the gold medal presented by Mr R. A. Crouch, through the society, for the best book of verse by an Australian for the year 1941, had been awarded to Leonard Mann for his book "Poems of the Mask." The judges also made special mention of a volume of poems by Lesbia Harford. Mr Mann, who has written a number of novels as well as books of verse, won the society's gold medal in 1932 with his novel "Flesh in Armour."32

Australian Dictionary of Biography

Leonard Mann (1895-1981), writer, was born on 15 November 1895 at Prahran, Melbourne, eldest son of Victorian-born parents Samuel Mann, draper, and his wife Kate Louise, née Truebridge. Leonard was educated at Moreland State School and Wesley College. In 1913 the failure of his father’s business led him to abandon his scholarship and work as a military staff clerk in the Australian Military Forces. He continued studying and enrolled at the University of Melbourne (LL.B, 1920), attending night lectures during 1915 and 1916.
On 12 January 1917 Mann enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force. Promoted to corporal next month, he sailed for Britain aboard the troopship Ballarat. After training at Southampton he proceeded in September to France, where he saw action on the Western Front with the 39th Battalion. In February 1918 he joined the headquarters of the 5th Division Engineers. He served as a sapper and was promoted to sergeant in March. Having transferred to the 8th Field Company in October, he returned to Britain in January 1919 before embarking for Australia. His experiences in the trenches, including being buried alive by a shell burst and losing consciousness in the mud before his rescue, were to affect him for the rest of his life. He was discharged from the AIF on 9 June.
Back in Melbourne, Mann completed his degree and signed the Victorian Bar Roll on 28 April 1921. On 11 January 1926 at St George’s Church of England, Malvern, he married Florence Eileen Archer. Seeking more regular employment than his legal practice provided, he became an associate to Justice Lionel Lukin of the Commonwealth Court of Conciliation and Arbitration. From 1929, appointed secretary of the Victorian Employers’ Federation, he worked as an advocate on basic wage and industrial cases. He was approached to stand as a United Australia Party candidate for Federal parliament, but by the end of the decade his politics had moved towards democratic socialism. In 1940 he resigned his position and became industrial and staff manager at the Aircraft Production Commission. After World War II he worked as senior public relations officer in the Department of Labour and National Service.
Mann’s ‘double life’, as he called it, started in the late 1920s, when he began contributing short stories and sketches to the Age under the pen-name ‘Fabius’. In 1932 he self-published his first book, Flesh in Armour, which depicted the experiences of an Australian platoon through World War I, both ‘in the line and out of it’. A thousand copies were printed and he kept the type standing, optimistic that Angus & Robertson Ltd would publish a trade edition after the novel won the annual Australian Literature Society’s gold medal. A negative reader’s report led to the rejection of the work, but it was finally issued in a paperback edition in 1973.
Continuing as a part-time novelist, Mann published Human Drift (1935); A Murder in Sydney (1937), a London Book Society Book of the Month and his only bestseller; Mountain Flat (1939); and The Go-Getter (1942). The first of his four volumes of poetry, The Plumed Voice (1938), was also self-published, but issued under Angus & Robertson’s imprint. While best-known for his fiction, he won literary prizes for his Poems From the Mask (1941) and Elegiac and Other Poems (1957).
During the 1930s Mann developed important literary connections with writers including Vance and Nettie Palmer and Frank Dalby Davison. Foundation president (1938) of the P.E.N. Club (Melbourne), and an active member of the Victorian section of the Fellowship of Australian Writers from its inception in the same year, he soon became an influential figure in his own right. As president (1947-48) of the Victorian FAW he issued The Robert Close and Georgian House Case (1948), a pamphlet discussing writers and the law in the light of Close’s Love Me Sailor (1945) obscenity trial.
In 1948 Mann settled in the Dandenong Ranges, where he became a poultry farmer on his Macclesfield property after retirement in 1950. Later, moving to Olinda, to the seaside at Inverloch, Gippsland, and back to the Dandenongs at Emerald, he took occasional jobs, among them organising secretary for the 1967 congress of the Australian and New Zealand Association for the Advancement of Science. Andrea Caslin (1959) was written with the support of the Commonwealth Literary Fund; Venus Half-Caste appeared in 1963. Another novel, completed during the 1940s and known under several working titles, remained unpublished.
Of medium height (5 ft 6½ ins; 169 cm), with blue eyes, light brown hair, and a moustache, Mann could seem—as Vance Palmer found—’inarticulate’ in conversation. Others noted his ‘weigh-the-matter-up-as-I-go speech’. Stephen Murray-Smith recalled him as a ‘man of singular sweetness of disposition’ who ‘loved his pipe’. Widowed in 1976, Leonard Mann died on 29 April 1981 at Hallam, Victoria, and was buried in Emerald cemetery, survived by his son and daughter.33
