  • 28 Dec 1892: Local Intelligence: Mr. J. R. Wakeham, of the Big House, Upper Beaconsfield, is to be congratulated on the success attending his efforts to provide an enjoyable evening's entertainment for the local residents on Boxing night. A splendid array of Melbourne talent was engaged by Mr. Wakeham, and a really first class concert given. A ball was afterwards held, at which there was a good attendance. Good music was provided, and an abundant supper set out, so that it is almost unnecessary to state that everyone enjoyed themselves.13

  • 31 May 1893: FIRE AT UPPER BEACONSFIELD. THE PRINCIPAL HOTEL DESTROYED. UPPER BEACONSFIELD, TUESDAY.
    The Beaconsfield-house Hotel (locally known as "the Big House") was destroyed by fire early this morning. About half-past 1 a.m. one of the visitors was aroused by what he thought to be the sound of heavy rain on the iron roof. However, the smell of smoke soon convinced him of his error. By this time the flames had got a firm hold of the building mainly of wood, and it was with difficulty that the inmates, several of whom were ladies, could be rescued from their perilous situation. As it was they were compelled to escape in their nightdresses. Fortunately, there are no casualties, there only being a few visitors.
    This hotel has been very unfortunate. About two years ago the former house, a large rambling wooden structure, was burned under similar circumstances, the origin being traced to the carelessness of some tramp in an adjoining outbuilding. The place was rebuilt the front portion being erected of brick and cement. Six months ago the stables were burned, with several carriages.
    On this occasion the fire has completely gutted the building, nothing but the brick walls in front and a wooden verandah in the rear being left standing, apart from the hearths and chimneys.
    The building and land were owned by Mr Phillips, solicitor, of Melbourne, and leased for five years (about a year of which has expired) to Mr J R Wakeham, who, with the assistance of his wife and two brothers, was carrying on the business. The building is insured, but in what office is unknown to the lessee. Mr Wakeham's furniture, some valuable pictures, and the whole of his stock were uninsured, and he will therefore be a loser by the fire. At present the origin of the fire is involved in mystery. All that is known is that the conflagration must have commenced somewhere in the direction of the kitchen. William Payne Wakeham16
  • 31 Oct 1893: HOTEL PROSECUTIONS. At the District Police Court yesterday James Richard Wakeham, licensee of the Saracen's Head Hotel, Bourke street, was charged with having his bar door not shut and locked during prohibited hours. The offence was proved, and a fine of £5 was inflicted. The same defendant was also summoned for allowing disorderly characters on his licensed premises. For this breach of the licensing act a fine of 40s was imposed.17

  • 28 Jul 1871: Considerable anxiety for the safety of Mr Wilckens, the up-river agent of this paper, and the contractor for the Half-Ounce mails, was created in town last night, by a report that his horse had been found, riderless a short distance on this, side Rocky Island on the Westland side of the river. The recent heavy rains had so much added to the normal dangers of travel in this roadless country, that it was at once surmised that Mr Wilckens had come to an untimely end at one or other of the excessively dangerous portions of the track. Mr Wilckens left town at ten o'clock in the morning, with a pack-horse earning the mails and papers, he riding another animal. The saddle-horse was found standing on the track as above stated by a man named Overn, at about two o'clock, and as several travellers had come down river at the time when Mr Wilckens was usually expected, and as he had not been seen, alarm was naturally felt for his safety. MrM'Kinty, who took charge of the stray horse, brought it down to town and reported the circumstances, and at once steps were taken to ascertain the fate of the missing man. Police Sergeant Muller, accompanied by Mr D. Carroll aud two boatmen, left town at about 7 o'clock in the evening, and it was arranged that a second search party should follow at daylight, but fortunately word was received shortly after the departure of the searchers that Mr Wilckens was all safe. The explanation of the circumstances which occasioned so much uneasiness being, that he had accidentally lost his saddle horse, and had pushed on with the other. We can only say that we are heartily glad that the affair was no worse, but we would desire to refer to the praiseworthy promptness with which the services of the search party were rendered. When the news of Mr Wilckens's safety reached town, the search party had of course got some distance up river, but a horseman was despatched to apprise them of the fact, and he managed to overtake them about three miles away, and thus saved them a purposeless night's work.20
  • 28 Jun 1872: NAPOLEON POSTAL SERVICE.
    [To the editor.] Sir—Permit me to state, in reply to the letter in your issue of this morning, and signed "Napoleon," that the whole of the allegations contained therein are absolutely false. "Napoleon", asserts that on several occasions lately the mail due on Friday was not delivered till Saturday ; untrue, and I challenge him for the truth of his statement. Indeed, every resident of the Napoleon district, with the single exception probably of "Napoleon" himself, will, I am confident, testify that the mails have always, without a single omission, since I had the contract for carrying them, been delivered in due time, with the two following exceptions, viz., on the 14th and 21st inst., when almost insurmountable physical difficulties interposed themselves. The heavy fall of snow resulted in the blocking up of the road between Napoleon and Half-Ounce, and it has since been impossible to pass the road between the two places. Obviously it is my duty to deliver the mail to the most important place, Half-Ounce, first, and to send the mail on to the less important place, Napoleon, from the Ahaura. Considering that the population of the former place is ten times larger than the latter. Until the road between Ahaura, Napoleon, and Half-Ounce is cleared of the fallen timber, I do not see that any other plan can be adopted for delivering the mails at the former place but I trust that Mr Mirfin, the Inspector of Roads, with whom I have spoken on the subject, will soon take steps to make the road again passable. I may be permitted to add in conclusion that the personal sacrifice I have always been ready to make, and not seldom the personal risks I have encountered in the execution of the mail contract, and in my desire to meet the wants and conveniences of the districts with which I am connected, are, I believe, too well known to permit any weight or importance being attached to the unfounded statements of your anonymous correspondent "Napoleon."

  • 13 Jul 1872: UP-COUNTRY MAILS.
    (TO THE EDITOR.) SIR—In reply to a letter signed F. Wilckens, which appears in your issue of of the 6th instant, and which, to say the least, is only remarkable by the abusive language it contains, and as he has challenged me for the truth of the statements made by me in a letter which appears in your issue of the 28th June, signed "Napoleon;" to confirm the said statements I am at liberty to have the following note inserted in this letter, which has been handed to me by the postmaster at Napoleon, who, I consider, ought to be sufficient authority in the matter:-—
    "Napoleon Hill, July 8. "I, the undersigned, testify that the mail has not been delivered at Napoleon on the proper day for the last four weeks. On some of these occasions it has not been delivered for three, days after it was due. N.B.— The statement contained in your issue of the 28th June is perfectly true, which is signed 'Napoleon.' Robert Rutledge,--"For J. M'Laughlin, Postmaster, "Napoleon." In the face of these facts, which must have been well known to Mr Wilckens when he wrote the letter in question, how he can have the assurance to assert that all the statements made by me were false, I will leave your readers to imagine. I will further state that the neglect still continues, and that the last two mails were not delivered in due time. The late snow fall did not interfere in any way with the Napoleon and Ahaura road, which is and has always been open for traffic, and I am not aware that it is necessary to have two roads to one place for the due delivery of the mail. He seeks to justify his neglect by asserting that it is his duty to deliver the Half-Ounce mail first, because the population of that place is ten times larger than that of Napoleon. I think it is his duty to deliver the mail according to contract, and not consider the importance of one place more than the other. In contradiction of his statement as to population, I will refer, your readers to Mr Warden Whitefoord's report to the Provincial Council, which report is contained in your issue of the 31st May as follows: Napoleon and Mosquito, 252; Noble's, 120 ; Orwell Creek, 50; total, 422 ; all of which depends on the Napoleon mail as being at least three miles nearer to them than any other post office; while the population of Half-Ounce and Duffers is 475. Thus it will be seen that there is not much difference in the importance of the two places as far as the mail is concerned. I am at a loss to know what F. Wilckens means by personal sacrifice, as it is usual, when a person takes a contract, to fulfill it under any sacrifice, or else he throws it up.

  • 3 Nov 1879: At the Collingwood Court on Friday, Edwin Hall, a herbalist carrying on business at Smith street, was prosecuted under "The Trade Marks Statute 1864" for unlawfully selling a decoction of his own manufacture in bottles, bearing a false, forged, and counterfeited label, whereby the trade mark " Painkiller" of Perry Davis and Son was imitated in such a manner as to be calculated to deceive. The defendant, while designating his fluid as " hot drops," had enclosed it in bottles of similar shape to Perry Davis's pain- killer, having the word "painkiller" blown upon the sides and printed conspicuously upon the label. He had also sold a similar manufacture of one" Dr. Wilckens" made up in Perry Davis's own bottles, and having a label so closely resembling the original as almost to defy examination. Hall had been convicted and fined for a similar offence in January last. The Bench considered the case clearly proved, and again fined the defendant £2, with four guineas costs Mr. Hood appeared for the complainants, Messrs, Newell and Co. The defendant was represented by Mr. Fisher.24

  • 10 Apr 1889: There was only one case down for hearing at the Dandenong County Court to day, in which Elizabeth McCalden sought to recover £250 from - Wilckins, of Beaconsfield, for slander. The plaintiff was employed by defendant as housemaid, and while in his service a tray, valued at a few shillings, was missing, and it appeared that he accused her of stealing it. She left his service and entered an action for slander. Judge Hamilton, who presided, awarded her a verdict for £40 with £11 costs. Mr. Tanner appeared for the plaintiff and Mr. F. Stephen for the defendant.28

  • 27 Feb 1890: EXTENSIVE FIRE AT THE BEACONSFIELD HOUSE.
    (By wire. From Our CORREPONDENT.) Wednesday Morning.
    The occupants of that stately building known as the "Sanitorium," about six miles from the Beaconsfield Railway Station, and lately owned by Mrs. A. H. Somner, who has figured so prominently in the Moss-Somner will case a week or two ago, was thrown into a state of terrible consternation, when it became known that the building was completely enveloped in flames, and a frightful and ineffable confusion took place amongst the inmates in their endeavor to escape from the horrible fate of being burnt to death, which at first seemed almost inevitable. The occupants of the building rushed in all directions in a state of frenzied excitement, and one woman in trying to effect her escape was completely overwhelmed by the dense smoke which was rushing with great force over the house, and was with great difficulty rescued from the flames. The scene was a most agonising one-men women and children were running in all directions in a half nude state, availing themselves of every opportunity that was open whereby they would be able to escape from the excruciating torments of the fiery demon. Next morning there was nothing to be seen of what was a few hours ago a complete homestead. The children, who lay huddled together without boots and very little clothing, presented a frightful picture. On the road to the station several lodgers were met tramping down in borrowed clothing. The house was completely gutted and absolutely nothing was saved with the exception of the horses and human beings, some of the latter having hairbreath escapes from a painful death. The fire is one of certain incendiarism, the fire having commenced quite remote from any chance of fireplace or otherwise, and it is quite likely that an inquiry will be held.

  • 12 Aug 1893: Arthur Tomlinson and Thomas Wilson, two young men, pleaded guilty to being on the premises ot Mr F Wilckens, of Macaulay road, Kensington, on the night of the 13th ult, with intent to commit a felony, and were sentenced to 12 months' imprisonment each.34

  • 14 Sep 1897: At the Prahran Police Court yesterday a youth named George Dixon was charged with stealing from the dwellinghouse of Leonard F Flannagan, of Thanet-street, Malvern, jewellery to the value of £45 on August 9. The jewellery had been taken from the bedroom table of Mrs Flannagan, and prisoner had been seen and spoken to near the house by the groom. Evidence was also given that prisoner had pawned some of the stolen jewellery at Crawcour's and Dowdall's pawnbroking establishments. Accused was committed for trial. The same prisoner was also committed for trial on a charge of stealing jewellery to the value of £18, on August 9, from the residence of John Adcock, of Toorak.7
  • 9 Oct 1900: THE CRANBOURNE ROBBERS. CRANBOURNE, Monday.
    At the Cranbourne Court today, before Mr Thos Smallman, P.M , and Messrs Jas Lecky, J T P Snipe, Walter Duff and Wm Crawford, J.P's, Detective G D O Donnell proceeded against William Humphries and John Gerald David Wilckens, the latter for breaking into Mr James George Hudson's store at Cranbourne on Monday, September 10, and the former as an acessory before the fact.
    Inspector Irvine, who prosecuted, stated that two men named Wilckens were camped at Cranbourne for two days, and on the suggestion of the prisoner Wilckens they broke into Mr Hudson's store, stealing over £100 worth of goods. They also took a cart and harness from Mr Hudson's premises, and a horse from the stables of Mr J W C M'Lennan, at Cranbourne. After going as far as the railway line the man who was still at large cut a telegraph post down.
    A written statement was produced by Detective O'Donnell, signed by the prisoner Wilckens, wherein he admitted everything concerning the robbery.
    Twenty-five witnesses were called for the prosecution and, after hearing the evidence, the Bench comitted both the accused for trial at the Melbourne General Sessions, on October 15. Bail was fixed, and two sureties of £150 each, and themselves in £300 each.8
  • 20 Oct 1900: WHEELER'S HILL OUTRAGE. EXEMPLARY SENTENCES. SEVERE JUDICIAL COMMENTS.
    John Gerard D Wilckens, aged 20, black smith and Frederick Tonsing, aged 24, bootmaker, appeared before Mr Justice Hood in the Criminal Court yesterday for sentence for shooting at Frederick William Gessner at Wheeler's Hill Post-office Hotel and for varions less serious crimes. Wilckens had admitted nine and Tonsing eight previous convictions.
    Mr Justice Hood told them there were two classes of offences which, in his opinion deserved to be severely punished. The first was where the offence included personal violence, especially if deadly wea pons were used, and the second was when the offence was committed by habitual criminals. They two had managed to bring themselves under both classes. Tonsing started his criminal career when 15 years old and Wilckens his when about 16. Wilckens in four years received eight sentences, amounting to three years three months ; Tonsing in seven years received eight sentence, amounting to five years seven months. It was hopeless to think of reforming them, they were members of a class that ought to be repressed as far as possible, and swept out of the streets. Their present escapade showed clearly what they were capable of, they furnished themselves with a revolver, powder, and shot, they proceeded on a maraunding expedition through the country, robbing people right and left and ending up with a performance which it was lucky for them did not end in murder. They fired at a man who only sought to protect his own property but fortnately the man managed to avoid the shot, and therefore they were not standing there at the risk of their lives. He would make a sleight difference between the two in this charge, as Tonsing was apparently the leader in the expedition. Tonsing would be sent to gaol for 10 years, and Wilckens for seven years.
    Tonsing received five years, cumulative on the previous sentence, for stealing a horse and cart and harness at Ferntree Gully, and went down from the dock, with a glare of vindictive hate at the judge, with a total sentence of 15 years imprisonment.
    Wilckens for the same offence received a cumulative sentence of three years, for shopbreaking and larceny Cranbourne he received another three years, and for stealnig a police horse, saddle, and bridle two more years, all cumulative, making his period also 15 years in all. He disappeared, smiling thoughtfully.
    A young man named William Humphreys with six prior convictions, the companion of Wilckens in the Cranbourne robbery, was sent to gaol for three years. Mr Justice Hood said it was idle to talk of reforming a young man like him. It might be that the state was somewhat to blame for his having drifted into the condition he was in, but being what he was, the best thing was to keep him under lock and key.9
  • 16 Nov 1944: TWO MEN ESCAPE FROM REFORMATORY
    Police in Beechworth district are searching for two men who escaped yesterday from the Beechworth reformatory. They are Harry Johnstone, 22, 5ft 6in, medium build, brown hair, hazel eyes, with anchor tattooed on right forearm; and Donald Fraser, 66, 5ft 9£in, white hair, fresh complexion, medium build, brown eyes, shoulders stooped, scars on back of right hand and right thumb.
    Both men were wearing white trousers, blue striped. shirt, dark tweed jacket, and heavy military boots.10
  • 22 Aug 1947: 48 years in gaol, and going back
    Donald Fraser, 69, of no fixed address, convicted of house breaking and stealing, was sentenced to 12 months' gaol by Mr Justice Lowe in the Criminal Court yesterday.
    Before committing this crime Fraser had served 48 years in gaol, and the sentences imposed on him totalled about 200 years, but some of them had been made concurrent.
    His crimes included false pretences, indecent assault, escaping from custody, larceny, horse-stealing, forgery, uttering valueless cheques, shooting with intent to murder, and assaulting a fellow prisoner.
    After the jury had returned its verdict Fraser had little to say, but he told his Honour that he was on parole, and as he had been declared an habitual criminal he would have to serve an extra four and a half years in gaol.11

  • 15 Oct 1900: Kalgoorlie Police Court. Saturday, October 13. (Before Messrs W J Cotter and Harry Friedman J's. P.) Bacon. A young man answering to the name of Otto Wilckens stood accused of the larceny of a side of bacon, valued at 32s, from the premises of Bricknell Bros. Mr W. H. Jones, who appeared for the accused, sought for and obtained a remand for eight days. Bail was allowed.11
  • 24 May 1904: KALGOORLIE POLICE COURT. Tuesday, May 17, 1904. (Before Mr. E. P. Dowley, R.M.)
    Change of Stealing. Otto Wilckens was charged with having, on May 7, stolen a quantity of castiron piping, the property of the Water Supply Department. Sergeant Kelso told the bench that the police were not prepared to go on with the case, and, herefore, he asked for a remand for eight days, which was granted. Accused asked for bail. Sergeant Kelso did not object. The piping had been recovered, and the accused was already on bail on another charge. Bail was granted in the sum of £10.12
  • 24 May 1904: KALGOORLIE POLICE COURT. Saturday, May 21. (Before Mr. E. P. Dowley, R.M.)
    Stealing. Otto Wilckens was charged with the theft of 8 cwt. of scrap iron, valued at £1 1s, the property of the Water Supply Department. The accused, who pleaded "not guilty," was represented by Dr. Lyhane. Sergeant Kelso conducted the case for the prosecution. John Steele, inspector for the Goldfields Water Supply Department, stated that the iron produced was the property of the department. It had been left on the pipe track on Boulder-road. Albert Abadee, marine storedealer, said that on May 7 he bought a quantity of cast iron piping from the accused. The piece produced was exactly similar to that brought in, which was the first of the kind he had seen on the goldfields.
    To Dr. Lyhane: He did not suspect that it was stolen. He paid 2s. a cwt. for it. Constable Thompson deposed that on May 16 he found the iron produced in a truck at the Kalgoorlie rail- way station. The accused was arrested that night. He said that he picked it up on Boulder-road. This closed the case for the police. The accused, on oath, stated that he brought the piping, which he found on Boulder-road, near the North Kalgurli lease, to Abadee and Levy's marine store. He had noticed it there several times, and thought that it had been thrown away. Dr. Lyhane submitted that there was no fraudulent intent. Mr. Dowley said that he would have to convict the accused. He would fine Wilckens £5 with 13s 6d costs, to be paid within one week, in default one month's imprisonment with hard labor.
    A Second Charge. Wilckens was then charged with having, in company with two other men, stolen a bicycle, valued at £7, the property of William Stahl. Accused pleaded "not guilty." Dr. Lyhane defended. John Johnson gave evidence of having come from the Half-Way House Hotel to the Imperial Wine and Beer Saloon with the accused and two other men, after which he left them. William Edwards, barman at the Imperial Wine and Beer Saloon, told the court that four men, including the accused and the previous witness, came into the saloon on the 12th inst., and after having drinks Johnson went away. The other three men moved suspiciously about the place, and then they went to the bottom of the yard and had a conversation. Mr Stahl's bicycle was on the verandah, and he saw one of the men go there and afterwards walk down the yard with the machine. He afterwards found that it was Mr. Stahl's bicycle, and he informed the police. Evidence of identification, the arrest, and the subsequent discovery of the bicycle was then given. For the defence the accused gave evidence on oath. He had nothing to do with the bicycle. Mr. Dowley said that there was no evidence to show that the accused stole the bicycle. The case would be dismissed.13
  • 19 Jan 1914: YEA. — Mr. Otto Wilckens has been elected a councillor for the south riding of the shire of Yea, in place of Councillor Lawson, who has been appointed engineer to the shire.14

I was christened on the 23rd February 1924. I was the first baby to be christened at St John's Church in Upper Beaconsfield. I was christened by the late Reverend R J Cole of Berwick.
Reverend Cole used to drive up the hill to Upper Beaconsfield from Berwick in a horse and buggy. He would tether the horse to one of the trees on the bottom side of the church.
My father was the late Harold Edwards. He used to mix the fuel for the lighting of the church. It was lit by gas. The little shed was on the gully side of the church under the building. That was done every Sunday morning.

BEACONSFIELD UPPER, Tuesday Mrs Beeching, a visitor from Melbourne, was spending a holiday with her sister, Mrs Bert Brain, at North Beaconsfield. Yesterday afternoon Mrs Beeching's son, aged four years, was in the yard with Mrs Brain's young son, who apparently went to the man's room and obtained a loaded gun. World War I

Albert John 'Bert' Brain enlisted on 18 Jul 1915 when he was 29 years old, married and working as a labourer at Strathewen. SERN 356.
He was with the 3rd Pioneer Battalion, A Company, which embarked from Melbourne on 6 Jun 1916, on board HMAT A62 Wandilla.
He served with the 4th Pioneer Battalion in France and was wounded by shrapnel in Sept 1917, which necessitated removal to England. He returned to France in Feb 1918, but was again invalided to England in Sept 1918 because of strained abdominal muscles. He returned to Australia on 2 Jan 1919.
He is remembered on the Beaconsfield Avenue of Honour.
After the war he worked a soldier-settlement property in North Beaconsfield for some years.1
