Reginald Corder

M, #820, b. 1887, d. 4 Oct 1917
Father*Henry John Corder b. 1858, d. 5 Sep 1940
Mother*Margaret Brennan b. 1864, d. 13 Jan 1948

World War I

Reginald Corder was a nephew of the CORDER sisters who ran Salisbury House from 1902-1934. He was a 28-year-old manager and married when he enlisted as a Private on 17 Feb 1916. SERN 4686.
His unit, the 22nd Battalion, 12th Reinforecement embarked from Melbourne on board HMAT A14 Euripides on 4 April 1916. He was promoted Sergeant in 10 Nov 1916, and wounded in action at Bullecourt on 3 May 1917. He was killed in Action on 4 October 1917 at Broodseinde, Passchendaele, Belgium. There is no known grave.1
Birth*1887 Richmond, VIC, Australia, #B31430.2
Marriage*3 Apr 1915 Spouse: Ann Mary Hannah Locke. East St Kilda, VIC, Australia, #M3432.3

Marriage-Notice*8 May 1915 CORDER—LOCKE. — On the 3rd April, at East St. Kilda, by the Rev. Father Berry, Reginald, second son of Mr. and Mrs. H. J. Corder, "St. Leonards," Balaclava, and Mollie, only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. S. J. Locke, "The Grove," Balaclava.4
Note*1917 George Charles Robert Shanks. Reginald wrote a letter to his aunt in Upper Beaconsfield re the missing George Shanks, asking her to give his sympathies to George's mother.
"France, 21st June 1917.
Since I have been back I have been trying to find out what I could about George Shanks. As I suppose you know he has been reported "Missing", and I am afraid there is very little hope, though it is just faintly possible that he has been made prisoner.
As you know he was in my platoon, and he was one of the best men we had. He was singled out for early promotion, and had he got through this stunt would certainly have been now carrying stripes. George's Section Commander was wounded just as the attack commenced, and George took charge of the Machine-Gun, as was of course, his duty, and he was last seen leading his section through the heavy fire towards the enemy lines.
If he is dead, he died doing his job, which I suppose is the best that can be said of any man.
Our platoon altogether was knocked about pretty severely, but I feel the loss of George Shanks more than any of the others.
I would like you, if you would, to let Mrs Shanks know what a very high opinion we all had of her son, and what a splendid soldier he was, and convey to her my personal sympathy with her in her loss."5
Death*4 Oct 1917 Broodseinde, Passchendaele, Belgium.
Death-Notice*26 Jan 1918 CORDER.-Killed in action, 4th October, 1917, Sgt. Reginald Corder, 22nd Battalion, dearly loved second son of Mr. and Mrs. H. J. Corder, "St. Leonards," Carlisle street, Balaclava. R.I.P.6

  • 27 Jun 1903: CANTERBURY POLICE COURT. FRIDAY.
Before Mr. G. J. Drury (in the chair), Mr D. Amos, Mr W. H. Nethercliff, and Captain Stead.
    DISMISSED.
Mark Berry, a pedlar, was summoned at the instance of the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children, for cruelty to his four children.
Inspector Hillyard applied for an adjournment for a week, as the solicitor engaged for the prosecution was unable to attend that day.—The Magistrates, however, refused to grant the adjournment on that ground.
Inspector Hillyard stated that on 13th December last he received a complaint concerning defendant, and he visited his house, 23 St Peter's Lane, in the evening. He saw defendant's wife and four children, Mark Berry, aged 10, John, aged 9, Robert, aged 6, and James, aged 4. The house and bedding were fairly clean. The children were in a room by themselves, and were fairly clean and clothed, and fairly well nourished. There was no firing and no food in the house. On the 5th of the present month the wife came to witness's office, and made a complaint, in consequence of which he visited the house the next day, and saw Mark, Robert and James. James was ill in bed with measles, and Robert appeared unwell. The children appeared thinner. There was no food in the house, and witness supplied them with some.
In reply to the Magistrates' Clerk, witness said the ground of the complaint was that defendant neglected to provide maintenance for the children.
Henry Christian Sutton, relieving officer, having given evidence, the Chairman said the Magistrates had decided to dismiss the case, but told defendant he must remember he was responsible for providing food for his children. Mark Berry, Mary Ann Berry, Frederick Mark Berry, Robert Raymond Berry, James Berry10

Mrs. Evans, of Emerald, Gippsland, Victoria, has received several letters from France giving an account of her son Evan C. R. (Dick) Evan's death on September 18, 1918. The Chaplain (Church of Eng land) of the 46th Battalion writes that Private Evans had been put on a stretcher bearer attached to headquarters, and that the battalion was given the difficult task to take an outpost of the Hindenburg Line. They faced the task bravely and took the position. A private writing says Dick had just finished bandaging a wounded comrade when he was shot by a German sniper, and died while being carried to the drafting station. Next morning be was buried in a military cemetery at Hudson's Post near Bellingise, a village in the vicinity of St. Quentin. Two of his friends assisted at the burial, and his battalion erected a neat wooden cross over his grave. Private Evans was a grandson of the late Mr. Charles Kimber, of Clare, and resided for some time before he enlisted with Mr. Jas. Hill, at Inchiquin.10
