Marriage* | 3 Apr 1915 | Spouse: Ann Mary Hannah Locke. East St Kilda, VIC, Australia, #M3432.3 |
Marriage-Notice* | 8 May 1915 | CORDER—LOCKE. — On the 3rd April, at East St. Kilda, by the Rev. Father Berry, Reginald, second son of Mr. and Mrs. H. J. Corder, "St. Leonards," Balaclava, and Mollie, only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. S. J. Locke, "The Grove," Balaclava.4 |
Note* | 1917 | George Charles Robert Shanks. Reginald wrote a letter to his aunt in Upper Beaconsfield re the missing George Shanks, asking her to give his sympathies to George's mother. "France, 21st June 1917. Since I have been back I have been trying to find out what I could about George Shanks. As I suppose you know he has been reported "Missing", and I am afraid there is very little hope, though it is just faintly possible that he has been made prisoner. As you know he was in my platoon, and he was one of the best men we had. He was singled out for early promotion, and had he got through this stunt would certainly have been now carrying stripes. George's Section Commander was wounded just as the attack commenced, and George took charge of the Machine-Gun, as was of course, his duty, and he was last seen leading his section through the heavy fire towards the enemy lines. If he is dead, he died doing his job, which I suppose is the best that can be said of any man. Our platoon altogether was knocked about pretty severely, but I feel the loss of George Shanks more than any of the others. I would like you, if you would, to let Mrs Shanks know what a very high opinion we all had of her son, and what a splendid soldier he was, and convey to her my personal sympathy with her in her loss."5 |
